1996 Ford Thunderbird problems
The Ford Thunderbird (colloquially called the T-Bird) is a personal luxury car manufactured and marketed by Ford Motor Company from model years 1955 to 2005 (with a 1997–2002 hiatus), across 11 generations. Introduced as a two-seat convertible, the Thunderbird was offered variously as a four-seat hardtop coupe, four-seat convertible, five-seat convertible and hardtop, four-door pillared hardtop sedan, six-passenger hardtop coupe, and five-passenger pillared coupe, with the final generation designed again as a two-seat convertible.
Ford targeted the two-seat Thunderbird as an upscale model, but the 1958 model year design introduced a rear seat and arguably marked the expansion of a market segment eventually known as personal luxury cars, positioned to emphasize comfort and convenience over handling and high-speed performance.
Overview
The Thunderbird entered production for the 1955 model year as a sporty two-seat convertible. Unlike the Chevrolet Corvette, it was not marketed as a sports car. Ford positioned the Thunderbird as an upscale model and it is credited in developing a new market segment, the personal luxury car. For 1958, the Thunderbird was redesigned with a second row of seats. Succeeding generations became larger until the line was downsized in 1977, again in 1980, and once again in 1983. Sales were good until the 1990s when large two-door coupes became unpopular. Thunderbird production ended in 1997, then briefly resumed as a two-passenger, marketed from 2002 to 2005.
From its introduction in 1955 to its final phaseout in 2005, Ford produced over 4.4 million Thunderbirds.

Common 1996 Ford Thunderbird problems
The 1996 Ford Thunderbird is known for several common problems that owners have reported. One of the most frequently mentioned issues is related to the car's roof. Some owners have reported problems with the roof when closing it into the trunk or boot. The roof may not fully lock down, which can be a significant inconvenience and may also lead to further issues with the car's interior.
Another common problem with the 1996 Ford Thunderbird is related to the engine. Some owners have reported that the engine cuts off for a second when they hit the gas, and the car may die when sitting in idle or when reversing. This issue may be caused by a variety of factors, including dirty injectors, a dirty throttle body, or a faulty fuel filter. Some owners have reported that cleaning the throttle body with a spray carb cleaner, running some fuel injection cleaner through the gas, and changing the fuel filter can help to address this issue.
The 1996 Ford Thunderbird is also known for transmission problems. Some owners have reported that the car may have difficulty shifting gears or may experience a delay when shifting. This issue may be caused by a variety of factors, including low transmission fluid or a faulty transmission solenoid. Some owners have reported that changing the transmission fluid or replacing the solenoid can help to address this issue.
In addition to these common problems, the 1996 Ford Thunderbird is also known for several recalls. The Center for Auto Safety has identified four recalls for this model year, which may affect the car's safety and reliability. These recalls include issues with the fuel system, the brakes, and the airbags.
Despite these common problems, many owners of the 1996 Ford Thunderbird have reported that the car is still a reliable and comfortable vehicle. Some owners have reported that the car has never given them much trouble and has been very dependable over the years. However, it is important for potential buyers to be aware of these common issues and to take steps to address them if they arise. This may include regular maintenance and repairs, as well as seeking out the advice of a qualified mechanic or automotive expert.

You bought this car new in 1996 and have had it since. It's great to hear that it has caused you no real trouble other than a couple of warranty visits to reprogram the computer. It's wonderful to know that it handles great, and even better now that you put Michelin's on it. The MPG is unbelievable for a V8 and it has plenty of pep. It's amazing to hear that the car still rides like the day you took it home. If someone is looking for a sporty car with style and class that will prove to be reliable, then this car should definitely be something to consider.
-
I've had the car since it was new, and I've always made sure to keep up with regular oil changes. I'm happy to say that I've never had a problem with it - it's a super car! I guess Ford really got this one right.
-
I've owned this car for a year now, and it's been a great experience. I bought it with 89,000K on the clock, and it's still going strong at 110,000K. It's an awesome car! It's been very reliable, and I've only had two issues with it. One was a sticky fuel injector, and the other was when my intake manifold blew up on the expressway, spraying coolant everywhere (which was a very interesting event!). However, I did notice that the new intake manifold came with an aluminum part to replace the plastic one that ruptured, which should prevent the problem from happening again. I love that I get 24 MPG with the V8 without even trying.
-
It sounds like you've got a really interesting car! From what you've said, it seems like it's perfect for long drives and road trips. However, it might not be the best option for city driving due to its size and lower city mileage. It seems to be in a bit of a tricky spot between a sports car and a luxury car. It's great to hear that you were able to find such a good deal on a 9 year old Ford with 82k miles. It sounds like it's exceeded your expectations!
-
I bought this 'bird new with the sport package (V8, spoiler, wheels, etc.) and I have never had any problems with it. I would never trade it in! The styling is excellent, the power is good, and it is very reliable! All I added was my own stereo and speakers, K&N intake kit, and just recently put a new set of Pirelli's on! It's a super car, and I couldn't ask for more for the 20K I paid when new!

I've always admired the sleek design of the BMW 6 series coupes. When Ford first introduced this body style for the Thunderbird, I immediately saw a more affordable alternative with many of the same styling cues as the BMW. I appreciate the power of the 4.6L V8 engine and the decent fuel efficiency for a car of this size. Unfortunately, my Thunderbird has experienced several mechanical issues since I purchased it used, including problems with the alternator, warped brake rotors, a leaky power steering pump, a rough-shifting transmission, a failed odometer, and overall poor build quality.
