The Dodge Nitro is a compact SUV manufactured and marketed by Dodge for model years 2007-2012 across a single generation — as a close variant of the second-generation Jeep Liberty. Both vehicles use a composite unitized construction integrating the body structure with full-length frame rails.
The Nitro entered production in August 2006 aside the Liberty at the Toledo North Assembly Plant in Toledo, Ohio and was offered in a single, four-door body configuration. Like the Liberty, it was manufactured in RHD and LHD configurations, and marketed globally. Sales commenced in September 2006 for model year 2007 in rear-wheel drive or optional and part-time four-wheel drive. Approximately 200,000 Nitro models were manufactured before production ended in December 2011.
Background
The Nitro debuted in February 2005 at the Chicago Auto Show as a concept with aluminum-trimmed vents door handles and rear hatch, as well as an interior with a center stack and shifter in satin silver.
The Nitro became Dodge's first compact SUV model since the Raider was discontinued in 1990. It also became the first modern Dodge marketed in Europe, where the Nitro was Dodge's only SUV until the 2009 model year when the larger, car-based, lower-priced Dodge Journey crossover SUV arrived.
The Nitro shares mechanicals and much bodywork with its platform-mate, the Jeep Liberty, while using a slightly extended wheelbase, the extra length split between the rear seat and cargo areas.
The Nitro debuted with an SUV class-leading 5,000-pound (2,300 kg) towing capacity. Safety features such as electronic roll mitigation, traction control, and side curtain airbags, as well as a functional sliding cargo floor marketed as Load 'N Go were offered as standard equipment. The system allows a moveable floor panel to slide out from the cargo area by 18 in (457 mm) to ease loading.

- Summary: The wiper relays went out recently and somehow caused the door locks to beep and go crazy then die completely. And a few weeks ago the brake came undone somehow and fell into the wheel well, ripping the inside of the rim open causing a blow out while my wife, 2 year old and I were on the freeway. And now after taking it to 2 different dodge dealerships, the problems are not fixed, there is more warning lights on than I've ever seen. And so far both places have told me they fixed an emblem on the steering wheel, and that the other recalls aren't applicable because of being a 2007 and the recalls are for the 2008. Even though my nitro is obviously having the same if not worse problems. All the way down to the emergency brake not working, we love our nitro and dodge as a company and would please like some kind of help with this situation. Our vehicle is our only source of transportation and it is not safe for us to be driving, especially in the winter conditions we just got hit with here. Thank you for your help to whom this may concern. Here are some pictures of what happened with the brakes, thank the lord we were getting off the freeway when the brakes gave way, if we had been on the freeway 15 seconds more, the accident would have been fatal without question.

Most recent today 12-17-21 was placed in extremely dangerous situation and was almost rear ended 5 times by other vehicles traveling at speeds greater than 55 mph. 1st instance occurred back in 2007 traveling West bound on I635 in Dallas (speed of 65mph) engine shut off, loss of power steering coasted to side of road. 2nd incident Fall 2007 - from complete stop to turn left and cross divided highway, the engine shut down right in the middle of the intersection and was nearly broadsided by oncoming car traveling at 45 mph. 3rd incident happened while driving in my neighborhood, engine shut down and loss of power to steering. Daimler Chrysler issued a recall to reprogram the TPIM module back in 2008 to address the problem. Nothing since then until today. I am the original Owner of this car and it has been well maintained and is still covered under the manufacturers warranty for as long as I own the vehicle. What has prompted me to report this problem is the fact that I could have been seriously injured. There was no warning whatsoever and the place where this took place had a blind spot as the car lost power during the climb and coasted at 2 mph down slope on a bend on the bridge. Cars traveling towards me had no visibility to my vehicle which was for all practical purposes at a stand still. I notified the Dodge Chrysler dealership of what took place and will also contact MOPAR to raise this serious problem. If a vehicle doesn't start is one thing, but to have a car loose power out of nowhere without warning has almost cost me serious harm on multiple occasions. Daimler Chrysler should do something before loss of life takes place.

- Summary: I noticed a few months ago my dash lights and radio lights at night when I turn my headlights on would flicker on and off several times then stop and do it again repeated process. I never got it looked at so just the other day I was driving and my windshield wipers, my emergency flashers and my driverside window and the back passenger window was all going crazy my widows was rolling up and down my flashers was going off and my wipers wouldn't turn off so I immediately pull over fearing of causing an accident with someone due to not being able to focus on driving once I pulled over my horn started blowing like crazy it was weird so I cut the vehicle off and everything kept doing what it was doing so I popped the hood and killed the battery. I waited maybe 10 minutes and hooked the battery back up and seconds later my horn only started going crazy again so I had no option out of the safety of me and other vehicles on the road to just have it towed back to my house I have been researching it and I've come to find out that there's several others with dodge nitros that have had the same issue as me. The tipm module (fuse box) was bad. I have yet to be able to drive my vehicle as it would be very unsafe and I've not yet got it towed to the dealership to look at it for reasons of what I've seen other complaints had to say about there experience at the dealership.. there needs to be a recall on the electrical malfunction as it is a huge!!! Safety concern for everybody. Please do something about this.

The car was taken to a dealer (Scranton Dodge) where they replaced the "clock spring"and acknowledged that the problem was not solved, however,they charged $674, and stated they for an additional $1000 would try the TIPM module. They removed the fuse to insure the horn would not blow. Having no horn is a safety violation in PA, as such, the vehicle will not pass the state safety inspection. They would continue to work on the problem but did not know what was causing the problem. In searching the internet I found MANY others with the same unsolved problem. I also contacted Jennifer at 11:47 AM on August 10 at Chryslers complaint department (1800 247-9753) and she stated Chrysler would not accept any responsibility for the problem.

- Summary: Significant amount of fuel spills from tank, down the side of vehicle and onto the ground during refueling. Unavoidable unless stopped at least a gallon prior to filling tank. This requires guessing the amount of fuel the tank can hold based off miles driven and/or fuel gauge readings. With practice I have been able to minimize the fuel spillage on my part but it still happens. I am in violation of state laws regarding refueling and pollution each time there is an incident. Further more, I have had a major safety issue resulting from loaning the vehicle to another driver. Post fill up resulting in said spillage; it was reported to me that a cigarette was tossed from a vehicle immediately after pulling from the pump, hitting the rear quarter panel covered in gasoline. Fortunately it just missed the fresh spill.

- Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2008-2010 Chrysler Town and Country and Dodge Grand Caravan and 2007-2011 Dodge Nitro vehicles. These vehicles may have a loose or missing brand emblem in the center of the steering wheel. The loose emblem or the securing nuts for the emblem within the driver air bag module may become projectiles in the event of a driver air bag deployment.
- Consequence: Projectiles as a result of driver air bag deployment in the event of a crash can increase the risk of injury.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's air bag cover with a redesigned cover, free of charge. The recall began February 11, 2021. Owners may contact FCA US LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is W09.

- Summary: Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2007-2008 Dodge Nitro 4X2 vehicles manufactured March 21, 2006, through March 1, 2008; and 2008 Jeep Liberty 4X2 vehicles manufactured February 15, 2007, through March 1, 2008. The transfer case heat shield may drop down and rub on the drive shaft, weakening it and potentially causing the drive shaft to break.
- Consequence: If the drive shaft breaks, a section of it can strike the transfer case tunnel with enough force that the airbag computer will believe the vehicle is in a crash and thus deploy the airbags. Additionally, the drive shaft failure will result in a loss of motive power. Either condition may increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will add a bracket to support the rear of the heat shield, free of charge. An interim letter was mailed to owners on May 29, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N10.

This vehicle has all the features you need at a reasonable price. It can tow up to 5,000 Lbs and you can switch from 2WD to 4WD on the fly! It has ample storage and roomy seating. Best of all, it looks amazing! The other vehicles you tested looked too common. The fuel mileage is 16 MPG, but you can expect this to improve as the engine breaks in since it has only 1,000 miles on it.

This SUV is going to become a verb! I took both the 4WD and 2WD for a test drive, but ended up buying the 2WD because it was more affordable for me. So far, I'm really liking it! Although, I did experience a bit of fish tailing on a turn when merging onto a main road, which made the tires squeal. After the initial scare, I couldn't help but have a silly grin on my face. Talk about a midlife crisis! But hey, I'm feeling young again!

Hey there! Sorry to hear about your car trouble. It must be frustrating, especially living in Alaska where the cold can cause issues. It sounds like the WCM might be broken, which controls the security system and starting the car. Even after disconnecting the Viper auto start, the car still wouldn't start. I've read that many people have had to replace the WCM, but Chrysler says it usually only needs to be replaced once. Despite this setback, I still think this is a great car, especially for families with kids. Let me know if there's anything else I can do to help!

Good handling for an SUV. The drive is very comfortable and the gas mileage is better than average for its class. Additionally, it offers high value for the price.

Hi there! I have an SLT with the 4.0 engine. Unfortunately, it emits quite a bit of engine noise (sounds like piston slap) under light to heavy loads. According to both the dealer and factory, this is normal for this engine. However, I find it to be quite uncomfortable while driving. In June, the factory rep mentioned that there would be a fix by way of a service bulletin, but unfortunately, this has yet to occur. On the bright side, all other aspects of the vehicle have been very acceptable.

I'm disappointed to say that I won't be purchasing another Dodge, even though they look pretty cool. Unfortunately, my experience with this one has been less than satisfactory. The roofrack is peeling from the roof, the brake lights work sporadically, the brake rotors are bad, and the A/C evaporator coil needs to be fixed, which will cost at least $1500. Additionally, the front passenger window won't roll down, and the window buttons on the driver's door only work to roll down the rear windows. On top of that, the seats are cheap and the stitching is coming loose. It's a shame because it looks great, but the quality just isn't there.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my new Nitro. When I purchased it on September 26, 2006, it only had 19 miles on it. I must say, it's been an absolute joy to drive! The mid-sized SUV handles like a dream, with great pickup and braking that make it feel like a much smaller vehicle. Everywhere I go, people can't help but stare at my Nitro. In fact, one guy even stuck his head in the window while I was still in the truck! As of today, I've driven 345 miles in 7 days. The only downside so far has been the gas mileage, which is averaging about 15.25 MPG, lower than the sticker's estimate of 17/23. I was hoping for at least 19. Nonetheless, I'm still thrilled with my purchase!

I experienced issues with the brakes sticking while driving, which caused the right rear wheel well to emit smoke during a 130-mile trip. Upon inspection, I found that the side wall of the tire was extremely hot and the rim was blistering hot. The parking brake, which was disabled at the time, was identified as the cause of the problem. The same issue occurred on the driver's side rear wheel before I took the Nitro to Chrysler Service, and the repairs cost over $600. Despite the mileage being only 17,700, Chrysler informed me that the brakes were not covered by warranty or recall, citing that brakes wear out through normal use. They did not take into account the potential danger of a fire.

I have experienced several issues with my Nitro. The shifting problems have resulted in the need for a transmission rebuild, which I had to pay for myself. Despite my diligent maintenance, these issues have persisted. As a result, I am unlikely to purchase another Dodge vehicle in the future.

I am disappointed with the service I have received from Dodge. Despite having lifetime power train and lifetime electrical warranties, it has taken an unreasonable amount of time for them to complete the necessary work on my vehicle. Specifically, my clutch and transmission issues have taken 3 1/2 weeks to resolve. Although these issues are well-documented online, it still took Dodge a long time to diagnose the problem. Additionally, I am being charged for the clutch despite ongoing issues. I believe that Dodge needs to improve their service and honour their warranties in a more timely and efficient manner.
