Dodge Nitro problems

The Dodge Nitro is a compact SUV manufactured and marketed by Dodge for model years 2007-2012 across a single generation — as a close variant of the second-generation Jeep Liberty. Both vehicles use a composite unitized construction integrating the body structure with full-length frame rails.
The Nitro entered production in August 2006 aside the Liberty at the Toledo North Assembly Plant in Toledo, Ohio and was offered in a single, four-door body configuration. Like the Liberty, it was manufactured in RHD and LHD configurations, and marketed globally. Sales commenced in September 2006 for model year 2007 in rear-wheel drive or optional and part-time four-wheel drive. Approximately 200,000 Nitro models were manufactured before production ended in December 2011.
Background
The Nitro debuted in February 2005 at the Chicago Auto Show as a concept with aluminum-trimmed vents door handles and rear hatch, as well as an interior with a center stack and shifter in satin silver.
The Nitro became Dodge's first compact SUV model since the Raider was discontinued in 1990. It also became the first modern Dodge marketed in Europe, where the Nitro was Dodge's only SUV until the 2009 model year when the larger, car-based, lower-priced Dodge Journey crossover SUV arrived.
The Nitro shares mechanicals and much bodywork with its platform-mate, the Jeep Liberty, while using a slightly extended wheelbase, the extra length split between the rear seat and cargo areas.
The Nitro debuted with an SUV class-leading 5,000-pound (2,300 kg) towing capacity. Safety features such as electronic roll mitigation, traction control, and side curtain airbags, as well as a functional sliding cargo floor marketed as Load 'N Go were offered as standard equipment. The system allows a moveable floor panel to slide out from the cargo area by 18 in (457 mm) to ease loading.

Common Dodge Nitro problems
The Dodge Nitro has been plagued with a number of issues across multiple years, including problems with the electrical system, fuel system, power train, and more.
The 2007 model of the Dodge Nitro had a particularly high number of complaints, with 788 documented issues and seven recalls. The major fault of the 2007 Nitro lies in its widespread electrical issues, which can cause the locks and lights to activate independently, the windows to roll down by themselves, the horn to sound randomly, and the car to stall while driving. These issues are often traced back to the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM), which is prone to malfunction in this model year.
The 2008 Nitro is also plagued by reliability woes, with over 700 complaints and three recalls. The bulk of the reports for this model year lament the car's faulty electrical system and TIPM, which can cause the TIPM to fail and lead to a range of electrical issues.
The 2009 model of the Dodge Nitro had problems with the electrical system, latches/locks/linkages, airbags, fuel/propulsion system, and unknown or other issues. This model year is particularly prone to problems with the electrical system, which can affect the safety and functionality of the vehicle.
The 2010 model of the Dodge Nitro faced issues with the electrical system, fuel/proppulsion system, service brakes, engine, and airbags. These issues can affect the safety and reliability of the vehicle, and may require costly repairs.
The 2011 model of the Dodge Nitro had problems with the electrical system, airbags, engine, powertrain, and fuel/propulsion system. Despite these issues, this model year may still be a good choice for those looking for a rugged and reliable SUV with a spacious interior and powerful engine.
In addition to these specific model year issues, the Dodge Nitro has also been plagued by transmission and computer problems, electrical issues causing lights to turn on and off, and problems with the retaining nut on the valve stem that can damage the inside of the tire.
Overall, potential buyers of the Dodge Nitro should be aware of these issues and take steps to address them as needed. It is important to thoroughly research the vehicle and its history before making a purchase, and to consider the costs and risks associated with these common problems.

- Summary: Took car in for windshield wiper safety recall on 3/24/23. BEFORE the recall the wipers worked perfectly. After the dealer serviced the wipers they sometimes would not go off and then seemed to be stalling a lot but I did not have many occasions where I needed to use the wipers as I work from home and have a second car in the household. Today I was driving in a severe thunderstorm when they stopped working completely. In fact, they are now stuck in the upright position and will not move. This is EXTREMELY dangerous and exactly what the recall was meant to avoid! It makes me wonder if the mechanics actually did anything to my car at all.

Dodge Nitro 2011
- Date Of Incident: 2015-01-28
- Date Complaint: 2023-01-11
- VIN: 1D4PU2GKXBW
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: Airbags: This vehicle has had a recall for a "Ram" emblem being placed over the airbag such that it becomes a projectile in an airbag depleyment. Dodge makes it very difficult to avail of getting it removed. I am not close to the dealership, I am very busy and somewhat disabled. Since the first notice arrived in the mail-- maybe three years ago-- I have returned the notices with a request for them to send a tech to my home and make the repair. I see there has been at least one death due to this obvious flaw, butthey have not cared enough to answer. Why should I take a day so that they can fix this deadly "extra feature" of shrapnel being placed over an explosive? Electrical: This is a serious safety issue that Dodge will not recognize or even discuss. Getting the window back up is a matter of finessing the "up" switch every which way, multiple attempts required (switch has now fallen out). Very distracting, after going through a toll booth after dark and 15 degrees. You can't stop and F with it, you have to do it on the move. It can take as long as five minutes to get it back up (Window now completely disabled). They will do anything to save seventeen cents per car, who cares if it makes it unsafe for the owner. Not Dodge! I wrote to Dodge (no reply), then the MI Attorney General about this, they responded "We have written to this manufacturer twice and have not received a response". Dodge takes no responsibility for their shoddy work. We pay, we die, they keep doing what they do. It disappoints that even the AG's "Consumer Protection Division" has no teeth. Visibility: It would be interesting to learn how many pedestrians have been hit with this particular model. With all the safety regs out there, it's amazing that a design that blocks visibility gets a pass. Unfortunately it is not the kind of thing you can discover in a test drive, but - crosswalks and four-way stops in particular are dangerous. You can hide a Ryder truck behind these A pillars.

I am so glad I bought my Nitro used! I have owned it for a month now and I still get excited every time I get in it to drive. Although I am not used to the MPG for an SUV, as I have always owned a car, the Nitro is great for long trips. It has plenty of room for passengers and luggage, making it an all-around great vehicle. I absolutely love my Nitro!

I've been the proud owner of my 2008 Blue Nitro for almost two weeks now. It's a significant investment for me since I hadn't made a payment on a vehicle in almost six months. Previously, I had a Red Jeep Liberty Limited 2002 that I paid off in January, and I was so relieved to see it go. During the last three months I had it, I had nothing but problems with it. When I saw the Electric Blue Nitro online, I knew I had to have one. I set my mind to it and finally found one with low mileage that was blue, and I purchased it with no problem. The sound system is also a plus, and I have Sirius satellite radio for three months at no extra charge. If you're interested, I highly recommend checking it out and taking it for a test drive.

This is my second Nitro. The first one was pure stock, nothing special. I had to get a second one because my wife was in a head-on collision that totaled the car. It wasn't her fault, and she was lucky to survive. The Nitro's safety features really impressed us. We were told that if it had been another type of vehicle, she would not have made it. I've added just about every extra you could want on a vehicle, and it's been a great investment. The only issue I've had is that when it's wet, the wheels tend to spin. Twice, I've had a tire temperature light come on and it said I had tire pressure at 9 pounds. It was a little scary when I was going 85 mph, but the Nitro handled it like a champ. I guess they don't make them anymore, so I'll definitely be keeping mine.

I love my Nitro! We purchased it in 2011 and it has been the best vehicle I've ever had. The navigation system and sound system are great, and Uconnect is very convenient for interstate driving. The R/T red seat package gives it a sporty look, and the 20-inch wheels with rims look nice on the exterior. While it doesn't have the best MPG, it's reasonable for an SUV. I haven't had any problems with it other than basic maintenance like brake pads and fluid flushes. I highly recommend using BG or AMSOIL products. My husband maintains my Nitro and he's never had any issues with reaching or working on anything. It's a shame that Dodge stopped making it. :-) I would love to have a 2015!

You made a great choice when you purchased this SUV with only one owner and 60,000 miles on it. It has been an absolutely fantastic vehicle with only minor issues, even after driving it for 140,000 miles. The Nitro gets great gas mileage for an SUV, averaging around 22 miles per gallon combined city and highway driving, even in the mountains. It's also a great snow driving vehicle, although it would be even better if it had a 4-low option on the all-wheel drive. The only real drawbacks are the radio, which stopped working after a year, and the cheaper plastic interior pieces that have taken a beating from your dogs. However, the speakers are still great and the radio is easy to replace with an aftermarket one. Additionally, the low front end clearance due to the plastic bumper limits its off-road capabilities. Overall, it's a great vehicle and you're even considering adding a second one to your family!

We purchased the R/T model with every available option, but unfortunately it did not come with a security system, which was surprising. However, we have experienced some issues with the vehicle since day one. The A/C did not work properly for the first four months of ownership, and the check engine light has come on multiple times. Although we have taken it in for repairs, the mechanics have not found anything wrong. Additionally, the passenger seat squeaks and the parking brake does not work at all. We also had an issue with the rear windshield wiper breaking during a car wash. Currently, the main computer (PCM) needs to be replaced, and it has been in the shop for a week with the part still not available. While we have had some difficulties with this vehicle, we would like to share our experience and suggest that you consider other options before purchasing this model.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my vehicle. I've had it for almost two months now and have driven 3000 miles. Unfortunately, I've encountered a few issues with the car. The first problem occurred when I was driving down the street and the car suddenly quit. Although the dash startup system lights came on, the dealer couldn't find any codes in the car showing what happened. A couple of weeks later, the electric lock switch plate on the driver's door stopped working. I'm currently waiting for the dealer to get a replacement. Just yesterday, the car quit running again while I was driving down the road. The locks popped up and it just quit. It's frustrating to experience these issues after paying almost 26,000 for the car. Thank you for listening to my experience!

The car had several defects and problems from day one, and unfortunately, it died on the side of the road in October 2019. Despite our efforts to fix it, our mechanic informed us that the cost of repairs would exceed the value of the car. As a result, we had to junk it. Although we had a few issues with the car, we are confident that we made the right decision. We had the battery and alternator replaced when we first bought the car, but we later experienced a strong smell of gas, which made it impossible to drive. We took it to the mechanic, but they couldn't find anything wrong with it. The windshield wipers and back passenger door also had issues, but we managed to work around them. We checked with the dealer to see if any recalls had been issued, and we were informed that they had all been taken care of. Despite these problems, we are confident that we made the right decision to junk the car.I strongly dislike this car and am eager to get rid of it. It has been the most problematic car I have ever owned, with constant defects, quirks, and unreliability. When planning a short trip, we have to rent a car due to the fear of it breaking down on the road or catching fire, as there is a persistent gas smell that no one can locate.

I've been driving my Nitro R/T for over a month now and I must say, I really enjoy it! The Bluetooth feature through the radio is fantastic and the leather seats, while not the most luxurious, are pretty comfortable. The heated seats are a great touch too! Although, I do wish that the interior had more luxury items considering the price I paid. It's worth noting that the Nitro R/T has 260 hp and great pick up. The only downside is that only the driver seat is power-operated, the passenger seat isn't. Overall, I'm quite happy with my purchase!
