Dodge Nitro problems

The Dodge Nitro is a compact SUV manufactured and marketed by Dodge for model years 2007-2012 across a single generation — as a close variant of the second-generation Jeep Liberty. Both vehicles use a composite unitized construction integrating the body structure with full-length frame rails.
The Nitro entered production in August 2006 aside the Liberty at the Toledo North Assembly Plant in Toledo, Ohio and was offered in a single, four-door body configuration. Like the Liberty, it was manufactured in RHD and LHD configurations, and marketed globally. Sales commenced in September 2006 for model year 2007 in rear-wheel drive or optional and part-time four-wheel drive. Approximately 200,000 Nitro models were manufactured before production ended in December 2011.
Background
The Nitro debuted in February 2005 at the Chicago Auto Show as a concept with aluminum-trimmed vents door handles and rear hatch, as well as an interior with a center stack and shifter in satin silver.
The Nitro became Dodge's first compact SUV model since the Raider was discontinued in 1990. It also became the first modern Dodge marketed in Europe, where the Nitro was Dodge's only SUV until the 2009 model year when the larger, car-based, lower-priced Dodge Journey crossover SUV arrived.
The Nitro shares mechanicals and much bodywork with its platform-mate, the Jeep Liberty, while using a slightly extended wheelbase, the extra length split between the rear seat and cargo areas.
The Nitro debuted with an SUV class-leading 5,000-pound (2,300 kg) towing capacity. Safety features such as electronic roll mitigation, traction control, and side curtain airbags, as well as a functional sliding cargo floor marketed as Load 'N Go were offered as standard equipment. The system allows a moveable floor panel to slide out from the cargo area by 18 in (457 mm) to ease loading.

Common Dodge Nitro problems
The Dodge Nitro has been plagued with a number of issues across multiple years, including problems with the electrical system, fuel system, power train, and more.
The 2007 model of the Dodge Nitro had a particularly high number of complaints, with 788 documented issues and seven recalls. The major fault of the 2007 Nitro lies in its widespread electrical issues, which can cause the locks and lights to activate independently, the windows to roll down by themselves, the horn to sound randomly, and the car to stall while driving. These issues are often traced back to the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM), which is prone to malfunction in this model year.
The 2008 Nitro is also plagued by reliability woes, with over 700 complaints and three recalls. The bulk of the reports for this model year lament the car's faulty electrical system and TIPM, which can cause the TIPM to fail and lead to a range of electrical issues.
The 2009 model of the Dodge Nitro had problems with the electrical system, latches/locks/linkages, airbags, fuel/propulsion system, and unknown or other issues. This model year is particularly prone to problems with the electrical system, which can affect the safety and functionality of the vehicle.
The 2010 model of the Dodge Nitro faced issues with the electrical system, fuel/proppulsion system, service brakes, engine, and airbags. These issues can affect the safety and reliability of the vehicle, and may require costly repairs.
The 2011 model of the Dodge Nitro had problems with the electrical system, airbags, engine, powertrain, and fuel/propulsion system. Despite these issues, this model year may still be a good choice for those looking for a rugged and reliable SUV with a spacious interior and powerful engine.
In addition to these specific model year issues, the Dodge Nitro has also been plagued by transmission and computer problems, electrical issues causing lights to turn on and off, and problems with the retaining nut on the valve stem that can damage the inside of the tire.
Overall, potential buyers of the Dodge Nitro should be aware of these issues and take steps to address them as needed. It is important to thoroughly research the vehicle and its history before making a purchase, and to consider the costs and risks associated with these common problems.

- Summary: Took car in for windshield wiper safety recall on 3/24/23. BEFORE the recall the wipers worked perfectly. After the dealer serviced the wipers they sometimes would not go off and then seemed to be stalling a lot but I did not have many occasions where I needed to use the wipers as I work from home and have a second car in the household. Today I was driving in a severe thunderstorm when they stopped working completely. In fact, they are now stuck in the upright position and will not move. This is EXTREMELY dangerous and exactly what the recall was meant to avoid! It makes me wonder if the mechanics actually did anything to my car at all.

Dodge Nitro 2011
- Date Of Incident: 2015-01-28
- Date Complaint: 2023-01-11
- VIN: 1D4PU2GKXBW
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: Airbags: This vehicle has had a recall for a "Ram" emblem being placed over the airbag such that it becomes a projectile in an airbag depleyment. Dodge makes it very difficult to avail of getting it removed. I am not close to the dealership, I am very busy and somewhat disabled. Since the first notice arrived in the mail-- maybe three years ago-- I have returned the notices with a request for them to send a tech to my home and make the repair. I see there has been at least one death due to this obvious flaw, butthey have not cared enough to answer. Why should I take a day so that they can fix this deadly "extra feature" of shrapnel being placed over an explosive? Electrical: This is a serious safety issue that Dodge will not recognize or even discuss. Getting the window back up is a matter of finessing the "up" switch every which way, multiple attempts required (switch has now fallen out). Very distracting, after going through a toll booth after dark and 15 degrees. You can't stop and F with it, you have to do it on the move. It can take as long as five minutes to get it back up (Window now completely disabled). They will do anything to save seventeen cents per car, who cares if it makes it unsafe for the owner. Not Dodge! I wrote to Dodge (no reply), then the MI Attorney General about this, they responded "We have written to this manufacturer twice and have not received a response". Dodge takes no responsibility for their shoddy work. We pay, we die, they keep doing what they do. It disappoints that even the AG's "Consumer Protection Division" has no teeth. Visibility: It would be interesting to learn how many pedestrians have been hit with this particular model. With all the safety regs out there, it's amazing that a design that blocks visibility gets a pass. Unfortunately it is not the kind of thing you can discover in a test drive, but - crosswalks and four-way stops in particular are dangerous. You can hide a Ryder truck behind these A pillars.

This review is for my 2011 Nitro Heat 4.0, which unfortunately wasn't listed in your roll-down. The Heat version is Chrysler's former 'SXT' trim, with decent exterior trim but inexpensive (cloth) interior seating. At the end of the model year, it was tough to locate a Heat with the rare 4.0 engine option (same engine that the old RT's had). Apparently, that's a little-known option on the Heats--even the salesperson was unaware of it. If you're looking for great performance and gas mileage (better than the standard 3.7), you HAVE to get the 4.0 engine. I just completed a 300-mile trip (with 400 miles on the odometer) and got over 22mpg at an average of 75mph. The engine's quick off the line, and the build quality is great. Thank you for considering my review!

Your 2008 Nitro sounds like an amazing car! It's great to hear that it has been so reliable and performed so well for you. With 98,000 miles on it and only needing scheduled oil changes, it's clear that this car is a winner. The ride and handling are excellent, and it's wonderful to hear that the original brakes and tires are still going strong. It's no wonder you're planning to purchase another one in 2011!

If you own a vehicle for 10 years or more, you have basically gotten your return on investment. I can attest to this with my personal experience with the DODGE NITRO 2008. I purchased the car brand new in 2008 and kept up with all the maintenance every 3000 miles per the handbook. The vehicle has performed exceptionally well, with great pick up speed. After 10 years, the service engine light finally came on, which was a $385 fix of a fuel injector. If you keep up with the maintenance per the manual, this SUV will have a true Jeep engine. The only issue I have encountered is the rust level on the back door. Despite washing the car weekly throughout the years, rust has built up on the front grill and back door of the SUV, which will cost $1500 to fix in a body shop. If they come up with an aluminum frame and body type and use the same engine, it will be a hit. I used this SUV for 8 years and then gave it to my son at 18 years of age, who has used it for 2 more years and it is still going strong except for the rust. It still gets 22 miles per gallon and has great pick up on the highway, making it a reliable SUV in the snow and rain!

After reading a lot of negative reviews from auto journalists about the Nitro, I was a bit hesitant. However, after reading positive comments from owners, I decided to take the plunge and bought a 2008 RT for a very good price. I must say, I'm quite impressed with the RT version, even though the ride is a little bit choppy. But, I do like a firm suspension. The interior of the RT is also a standout feature, it looks and feels so much more superior than the base models. Fuel economy is okay as long as I'm easy with my foot. However, when I step on it and release all its power, my gas mileage is not great. I'm not too crazy about the square look of the vehicle, but it has a lot of room inside. Overall, I'm really enjoying this vehicle so far.

I recently purchased the Nitro SXT and have been thoroughly impressed with it so far. Despite being the 'entry level' option, it is incredibly comfortable, stylish, and fun to drive. The V-6 engine provides plenty of power, and the vehicle is nimble on corners with a quiet interior cabin. The seats are firm and supportive, and there is ample cargo room for my furry friends. The aggressive styling also receives lots of positive comments and attention. Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase and believe it offers great value for money at just $20k.

I really enjoyed my car at first, but unfortunately, it has been experiencing some issues. In the first month, it stopped working and had to be towed. The dealer fixed an ignition problem, but a few months later, the horn, windshield wipers, and radio started malfunctioning while I was driving. I had to pull over and turn off the car to make it stop. The dealer said it was a computer issue and fixed it. This week, the emission light came on, and I was unable to get it inspected today. I have to take it in again tomorrow. It's frustrating that these issues are happening with a brand new car, but I'm hopeful that they will be resolved soon.

There are several issues with the car that need to be addressed. The rear top brake light needs to be replaced, as the entire unit needs to be replaced instead of just the light bulb. Additionally, all four tire sensors need to be replaced at a cost of 150 each. The headlights have been replaced twice, but there is still only one headlamp. The wipers only work in dry weather, and the fog lights have already blown. The car also jumps out of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear, and wants to stall and bog in wet weather. Finally, the plastic on the side of the driver's seat is cracked and broken off. As someone who has owned four Dodge vehicles, I cannot recommend purchasing from them again, as they have not acknowledged any of these issues.
Myron Homenick 2025-01-09
Vehicle year: 2011
The Nitro has a sharp body with aggressive lines, but unfortunately, its great qualities end there. While it has the potential to be a great light SUV with its size, sharp turning radius, and rear-end that refuses to lose grip, it falls short in other areas. The front and back seats are quite compact, making it far from roomy. Additionally, the Nitro's suspension transfers most every bump in the road to the passengers, although it doesn't have body roll like some SUV's. As the driver, you may feel unattached to the Nitro due to the vague steering and throttle response. Fuel mileage is also a problem, as it is no better than its larger Dodge counterparts. In summary, the Nitro is a light SUV with some drawbacks, but it still has some good qualities worth considering.

Hi there! This is the first vehicle I ever bought brand new and I've had it for three years now. It's been great, but recently I've been having some trouble with it stalling when idling. I've taken it back to the dealership for service, but they haven't been able to reproduce the problem. It only has 70k on it. Do you have any suggestions?
Roy Herman 2025-01-04
Vehicle year: 2007
I'm disappointed to say that I won't be purchasing another Dodge, even though they look pretty cool. Unfortunately, my experience with this one has been less than satisfactory. The roofrack is peeling from the roof, the brake lights work sporadically, the brake rotors are bad, and the A/C evaporator coil needs to be fixed, which will cost at least $1500. Additionally, the front passenger window won't roll down, and the window buttons on the driver's door only work to roll down the rear windows. On top of that, the seats are cheap and the stitching is coming loose. It's a shame because it looks great, but the quality just isn't there.
