The Mazda3 (known as the Mazda Axela in Japan (first three generations), a combination of "accelerate" and "excellent") is a compact car manufactured by Mazda. It was first introduced in 2003 as a 2004 model, replacing the Familia/323/Protegé in the C-segment.

The second-generation Mazda3 for the 2009 model year was unveiled in late 2008, with the sedan premiering at the Los Angeles Auto Show and the hatchback at the Bologna Motor Show. For the 2012 model year, Mazda began offering the Mazda3 with their newly developed Skyactiv technology, including a more rigid body, a new direct-injection engine, and a new 6-speed transmission.

The third generation was introduced in mid-2013 as a 2014 model year. The third-generation model is the first Mazda3 to adopt the "Kodo" design language and a more complete Skyactiv range of technologies.

The fourth-generation Mazda3 for the 2019 model year was unveiled in November 2018 at the Los Angeles Auto Show. For the 2019 model, the all-new Mazda3 is equipped with the updated Skyactiv technologies, including a spark-controlled compression ignition engine marketed as the Skyactiv-X.

A performance-oriented version of the Mazda3 was marketed until 2013 as the Mazdaspeed3 in North America, Mazdaspeed Axela in Japan, and the Mazda3 MPS in Europe and Australia.

The Mazda3 became one of Mazda's fastest-selling vehicles, with cumulative sales in January 2019 of over 6 million units.

Common 2017 Mazda Mazda3 problems

The 2017 Mazda3 has been praised for its reliability and value by many owners, but like any car, it has its share of common problems. One of the most widespread issues is the brakes squeaking, which has been reported by a significant number of owners. This problem can be particularly annoying and may require regular maintenance or replacement of brake components to address.

Another common issue with the 2017 Mazda3 is related to the door lock actuators, which can fail and cause problems with the car's locks and security system. This can be a significant inconvenience and may require replacement of the faulty actuators to fix.

In addition to these mechanical issues, some owners have reported problems with the rearview camera on the 2017 Mazda3. These problems can include distorted images, failure to display, or other issues that can compromise the car's safety and convenience.

The infotainment system on the 2017 Mazda3 has also been a source of frustration for some owners, with issues such as the heads-up display randomly clicking buttons, the GPS no longer working, and the radio frequently losing station connections. These problems can affect the car's entertainment and navigation capabilities, making it less enjoyable and convenient to drive.

While these problems are relatively minor compared to some other compact cars on the market, they can still be frustrating and costly to address. However, with regular maintenance and timely repairs, many of these issues can be minimized or avoided altogether. Overall, the 2017 Mazda3 remains a reliable and popular choice for many car buyers, with its high value, great features, and strong reputation for reliability.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-01
  • VIN: 3MZBN1K70HM
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I am experiencing an issue with the infotainment system in my vehicle where it behaves erratically and intermittently without any input from me. Radio Stations Change Automatically: The system switches between radio stations on its own, even when I haven’t touched the controls. Unwanted Phone Calls: The system will sometimes dial random contacts from my phone without any command or input from me. This has led to accidental calls. Dropped Calls: When I’m on a phone call via the car's Bluetooth connection, the system frequently drops the call or switches to a different function, like the radio or media player, cutting off the conversation. Erratic Behavior During Media Playback: Occasionally, the system will change media sources (e.g., switching from Bluetooth audio to the radio) or pause/unpause media randomly. These issues are not tied to any specific driving conditions or user actions. It seems like the infotainment system has "a mind of its own" and is functioning independently, which creates safety concerns, especially when I'm driving.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-20
  • VIN: 3MZBN1V73HM
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: My Infotainment system is experiencing the “ghost touch” and selecting all these options on its own while driving, putting a great risk on myself and passengers as any selection can be made and distract the driver. The screen is supposed to become disabled as a safety feature when driving but with this issue it is randomly making different commands that are extremely distracting especially during traffic hour times. The problem has been confirmed and Mazda refuses to issue a recall or do anything at all to fix this manufacturer error. There was no other warning lamps it just started glitching one day and has not stopped since for about half a year now. There are hundreds of other people I have read who are also experiencing the same issue and still Mazda refuses to acknowledge its faulty system and put so many lives at risk.

The touchscreen will make noises when this happens distracting me from focusing on the road. This issue has not been confirmed by the dealer for my specific car, but is available to be inspected. There is no warning when this failure happens and seems to be random. This first started happening 3 or so months ago

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-15
  • VIN: 3MZBN1K78HM
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Touch screen has a separation issue between the touch screen and LCD screen causing a blurry/distorted image. Mazda is aware of the issue on the couple years prior to this model year and has issued an extended warranty for those model years. But for whatever reason, Mazda is ignoring the same issue on the last couple years of this generation car even though they are having the exact same issue. Would cost hundreds of dollar to get fixed on my end. My car is available for inspection if required. When this issue happens, it causes the screen to separate/bubble from the outer touch screen portion which results in an almost unreadable image on the backup camera screen causing a safety issue. Like I said, Mazda is aware of this issue on previous model years and has issued fixes. But for my model year, they just ignore it. No warning or anything appeared when this occurred.

I feel my safety was at risk since I was on a highway and my car lost power and would not allow me to accelerate. Loaded the car on a flatbed to bring into a Mazda dealership. I had oil leaking into my coolant. They diagnosed it as a cracked cylinder head or engine block. Only solution I was given was to replace the engine with a factory new engine. I spoke to Mazda customer service and they admitted it is a known issue.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-27
  • VIN: 3MZBN1U71HM
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: My 2017 Mazda 3 (85,000 miles) suddenly had the engine light go on and a loss of power. I’m lucky I didn’t have an accident. I took it immediately to the shop and they informed me that my low pressure fuel pump is bad. I see they have a recall on Mazda 2018–2020 fuel pumps. However, I also saw a class action lawsuit attempt to include Mazdas from previous years because the fuel pump has the same number as those cars. I had just taken my car in for routine maintenance, spark plug change, and inspection at the dealership two weeks before this incidence happened and they didn’t report anything wrong with my car.

Negative 2017 Mazda Mazda3 car reviews

  1. Garth Cruickshank 2024-11-11

If you're looking for a daily driver that's a little more exciting than your typical subcompact, this car should definitely be on your list. The top-level trim offers near-luxury quality on the interior, making for a reliable and impressive package with a bigger engine. You can even wait a couple of years for the price to drop and still get an amazing value. While it may not break any speed records, it definitely improves the daily drive with its amazing handling and enough horsepower to overtake most cars on the freeway. There's near-zero roll when you turn any corner, making it a truly unique experience. The only downsides are that the tire sound is quite loud on the inside, it's not the smoothest ride (so passengers may complain), and the sound system, while high quality, is calibrated toward the very center of the car. Overall, it feels more composed and heavier than a Miata MX-5, but it's still plenty of fun. You should definitely try it out and see for yourself!

  2. Jules Borer 2024-10-09

Despite my recent experience, I can confidently say that the 2017 Mazda3 hatch is a good car. While driving home last week, I unfortunately experienced an unexpected explosion which resulted in my sunroof shattering. Upon bringing my car to the dealership, I was informed that it was hit by a moon rock, which is an unusual occurrence. Thankfully, my car was still under warranty, and the issue was resolved. Although I have had to replace the windshield and deal with several nicks, I understand that the sunroof was made of non-tempered glass. While this may seem like a questionable decision, I still believe that the Mazda3 is a great car. Although I may not purchase another one due to my personal preferences, I would still recommend it to others who are looking for a reliable and enjoyable driving experience.

  3. Gayle Wolff 2024-01-28

After reading and watching a lot of positive reviews, I decided to test drive the Sedan GT with automatic transmission. The car design, both inside and out, is outstanding and superior, with a timeless beauty. However, as soon as I got in, I started to feel a bit confused. The infotainment system is a bit difficult to get comfortable and safe with, but maybe it just takes some time to get used to. The ride is indeed superior, sporty and soft at the same time. I didn't even feel like I was driving a small sedan (and I came to the dealership in an Acura TL). It's definitely better than the Dodge Dart, Elantra, Corolla, and Cruze, although I haven't driven the new Civic yet. The only disappointment was the little plastic display of the actual speed and speed limit, which is impossible to fold down if you don't want it. It's there all the time and can be a bit distracting. The biggest disappointment, however, was the price. You can lease a nicely loaded Toyota Camry, Acura ILX, or Honda Accord Sport for less money. So, in my view, the Mazda 3 GT is for real Mazda enthusiasts. Otherwise, I don't see a reason to go for it.

Positive 2017 Mazda Mazda3 car reviews

  1. Devon Rodriguez 2024-11-29

The car is really nimble, rides really well, and is super comfortable. The rear seat access and comfort are really decent, as is the storage space. We're looking for modern driver assist features and this car has the best ones so far - in particular, the lane departure warning offers a choice of steering wheel shaking (which is my favorite) as well as two sound modes (tone and 'rumble') with three volume levels. Other makes we've considered only offer one sound at a low level, which can easily be drowned out by road noise. The MT and clutch are great and, although I generally prefer MT, the AT version performed really well and I'd be happy with either. This car is definitely on our short list. (It will be replacing an older and much-loved Jetta diesel with MT. Our other cars are an E30 series BMW with MT and a Subaru Outback with AT).

  2. Don Bode 2024-10-15

Congratulations on selling your 2017 Mazda 3 after 5 years of ownership and 30k trouble-free miles! It sounds like you had a great experience with this car, and I'm glad to hear that it was fun to drive with fantastic steering and good zip from the 2.5 liter engine. The handling and interior, as well as the features like radar cruise control and Bose stereo, all sound amazing. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!

  3. Sammy Farrell 2024-10-10

I've owned 13 vehicles in my lifetime and needless to say, I've never bought the same car twice, apart from my Mazda 3. The first Mazda I put over 100,000 miles on - and I never had any issues with it. I even drove it to Snowshoe in the middle of winter and it drove through the snow like a 4-wheel drive! Now I'm on my next Mazda 3 and so far, it's been great. Plus, it looks super snazzy too!

  4. Jeffery McDermott 2024-09-29

Hi there! I'm glad to hear that you love your 2017 Mazda 3 5 door GT. I understand your concerns about the CD player and the parts. Unfortunately, the newer models don't come with CD players, but I'm sure you'll find other ways to enjoy your music. As for the parts, some are made in Mexico, but the quality is still top-notch. I'm not sure about the chocolate accents, but I can assure you that Mazda takes great care in assembling their cars. Regarding the hatch support, I can understand your worry, but I'm sure it's sturdy enough for the drive-in. Thank you for choosing Mazda, and I hope you continue to enjoy your car!

We were originally planning on getting the VW Sportwagen to replace our diesel Audi A3 Sportback, but we ended up going with the Mazda3 because of its great price and sleek design. If you're in the same boat and looking for a viable replacement, here's a comparison between the two vehicles. In terms of rear cargo space, the Audi A3 is more of a true wagon style with its 8-window styling, while the Mazda3 is a true hatchback with the same cargo space in the back. However, due to its shorter, lower roof line, it is slightly less roomy than the A3. Moving on to the interior, the A3 has full leather seats, while the M3 has 'leather trim' seats, meaning only the backrest and seat are leather. The sides of the seats are made of high-quality 'pleather'. The M3 is newer than the A3 and has 2 USB ports and an SD card slot, which can load a navigation OS if you opt out of the NAV package. It also has a heads-up display that reflects off a clear viewing window that automatically pops up when driving. The Audi A3 does not have any of these features in the premium trim. Both interiors are made of plastic, but the M3's interior looks cheaper than the A3's. Audi does a better job masking the plastic with a matte-textured finish and storage netting in both driver and passenger wheel wells. The A3's rear has A/C vents, while the M3 does not. The A3 also has a pass-thru to the rear-cargo area, which the M3 does not. It's difficult to compare the MPG between the two because one is diesel, which hands down, the A3 shines. In terms of exterior features, both vehicles have side-indicator lights, but since the M3 is newer, it also has side avoidance warning. However, the A3 has HID headlights and running lights, which are only available as additional options in the M3, including a safe-braking feature option. As for reliability, our A3 has only gone in for routine maintenance and new tires. At 75K, it still has its original brakes, batteries, and A/C, which is impressive in itself. We'll see how our Mazda3 holds up. Conclusion: There are differences if you know what to look for. Hope this helps.
