2003 Dodge Neon problems

dodge logo

The Neon is a compact car that was built from in January 1994 until 2005 by the American Chrysler Corporation over two generations. It has a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and came in two-door and four-door sedan body styles. In the United States it was sold as either a Dodge or a Plymouth, while in Europe, Mexico, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Egypt, Australia, South Africa, and South America it was branded as a Chrysler, the Neon was offered in multiple versions and configurations over its production life, which lasted from the 1995 model year until 2005. The Neon nameplate was subsequently resurrected in 2016 for the Dodge Neon, a rebadged variant of Fiat Tipo sedan for the Mexican market.

1991 concept car

The Neon nameplate first appeared as a concept car in 1991 under the Dodge brand. Although radically styled and clearly not production-ready featuring sliding suicide doors, the Neon concept resembled the future production vehicle.

The Neon concept was designed by Chrysler designers who had joined the company from Chrysler's buyout of American Motors Corporation (AMC) in 1987.

Common 2003 Dodge Neon problems

The Dodge Neon, produced from 1995 to 2005, has been known for a few recurring issues that owners have reported over the years. Here are some of the most common problems with the 2003 Dodge Neon, based on the search results:

  • Oil Entering Spark Plug Tubes: Failure in spark plug tube seals can cause oil to enter the spark plug tubes, leading to misfires and poor fuel economy. This issue is more common in high-mileage Neons and can be resolved by replacing the faulty seals.
  • Musty Smell from HVAC System: A musty smell from the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system can be caused by mold or mildew growth in the evaporator case. This issue can be resolved by cleaning or replacing the evaporator core.
  • Melting Wire Harness Connector: A melting wire harness connector can cause smoke or a burning smell under the hood. This issue has been reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and can be resolved by replacing the faulty connector.
  • Powertrain Failure: Powertrain failure has been reported in Neons with less than 100,000 miles. This issue can manifest as metal shavings in the transmission or total transmission failure. Replacing the transmission may be necessary to resolve this issue.
  • Exterior Lighting Problems: Exterior lighting problems, such as missing reflectors or weak aftermarket lights, have been a recurring issue for the Neon. The car has also been investigated twice for headlight failure.
  • Electrical System Issues: Electrical system issues, such as a draining battery or a faulty alternator, have been reported by Neon owners. These issues can cause the car to not start or have intermittent electrical problems.
  • Steering and Suspension Problems: Steering and suspension problems, such as a bent steering knuckle or worn-out CV joints, have been reported by Neon owners. These issues can cause the car to handle poorly or make unusual noises.
  • Transmission Issues: Transmission issues, such as slipping or jerking, have been reported by Neon owners. These issues can be caused by worn-out clutch plates or a faulty transmission control module.

In summary, the Dodge Neon has been known for a few recurring issues, such as cooling fan failure, oil entering the spark plug tubes, and musty smells from the HVAC system. Other issues, such as powertrain failure, exterior lighting problems, electrical system issues, steering and suspension problems, and transmission issues, have also been reported by Neon owners. It is important to address these issues as soon as possible to keep the car on the road for longer.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-08-03
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: HI, I HAVE A DODGE NEON 03, AND IT CUTS OFF WHILE I AM DRIVING. THERE ARE NO WARNING SIGNS THAT IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN, EVERYTHING IN THE CAR SHUTS OFF AND THE CAR COMES TO AN INSTANT STOP ON THE ROAD. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP ON TWO OCCASIONS WITHIN THE LAST THREE MONTHS FOR THIS ISSUE. THEY THOUGHT THAT THEY KNEW WHAT IT WAS THE FIRST TIME AND THEY JUST SWITCHED OUT A CAR PART, BUT THEY DIDN'T FIX THE PROBLEM BECAUSE TWO MONTHS LATER MY CAR STOPED AGAIN ON JULY 4TH. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE SHOP, THEY KEPT IT FOR TWO DAYS TO RUN TEST AND THEY GAVE ME MY CAR BACK AND SAID THAT THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT. ABOUT A MONTH GOES BY AND MY CAR COMES TO A SUDDEN STOP ON A HIGHWAY THIS TIME, ON AUGUST 3RD. THERE HAS NOT BEEN ANY ACCIDENTS AT THIS POINT DUE TO THIS PROBLEM, BUT YOU CAN SEE HOW ONE COULD EASILY OCCUR AND HOW IT COULD POSSIBLY BE FATAL FOR THE DRIVER AND OTHERS. I DID SOME REASEARCH AND DISCOVERED ONLINE THAT THERE WERE SEVERAL OTHERS THAT WERE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THEIR DODGE NEONS, AND IT'S NOT JUST THE 03'S BUT ALSO THE 96-98, AND 2000'S. I JUST THOUGHT THAT IT WAS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE AND THAT SOMEONE SHOULD INVESTIGATE THIS PROBLEM. THANKS *TR

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-03-01
  • VIN: 1B3ES56C23D
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO FROM A USED CAR DEALERSHIP. ABOUT A WEEK AFTER WE BOUGHT IT, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, AND WE ALSO NOTICED THAT THE TRUNK WAS LEAKING AND HAD SO MUCH WATER IN IT THAT MUSHROOMS WERE LITERALLY GROWING UNDER THE CARPET. NO ONE COULD FIX THE TRUNK LEAK. WE HAD TO TAKE THE CARPET OUT AND BLEACH THE MUSHROOMS OFF, TWICE. WE ENDED UP BUYING CAULKING AND FIXED IT OURSELVES SO WE WOULDN'T WASTE $250 FOR A MECHANIC TO NOT FIX IT AGAIN. IT TOOK 3 TUBES OF CAULKING, BUT IT STOPPED LEAKING. NOW THE SUN ROOF LEAKS AS WELL. BUT THE BIGGEST PROBLEM IS THAT NO ONE SEEMS TO BE ABLE TO FIX THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT PROBLEM EITHER. WE'VE TAKEN THE CAR TO 4 SEPARATE GARAGES AND HAVE HAD THIS SAME ISSUE "FIXED" 6 TIMES NOW. WE'VE SPENT AT LEAST $500 ALL IN ALL ON THIS ONE PROBLEM AND EACH TIME, THE LIGHT GOES OFF, BUT A WEEK LATER IT COMES BACK ON. NO ONE CAN FIX IT. WE'VE HAD THE CAR FOR 2 YEARS AND WE'VE ALREADY PUT AT LEAST $1000 INTO IT, IF YOU INCLUDE THE BRAKES AND TUNE UPS. *TR

Negative 2003 Dodge Neon car reviews

  1. Melany Hudson 2024-11-24

Despite the car only having 5000 miles, the brakes are making noise. Despite having taken the car back three times for this issue, the area representative from Chrysler has stated that this is normal. However, it is important to note that noise from the brakes is not an available option.

  2. Glen Kuvalis 2024-10-25

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my Neon that I bought brand new in 2003. Overall, I've really enjoyed it! I did have some rough idling issues, but thankfully they were covered under the powertrain warranty. Other than that, I haven't had any major repairs. Considering I only spent about $12,000 on the car, I think it's been a great investment. If you're in the market for a reliable commute vehicle, I would definitely recommend taking a look at the Neon. Personally, I average about 28 mpg with 85% highway and 15% city driving, which is pretty good in my opinion. Let me know if you have any questions!

I replaced both front wheel bearings at 34,000, 74,000, and 100,000 miles, the transmission and radiator at 90,000 miles, and the pads and rotors three times. Although there were some check engine light problems, I was able to address them promptly.

I needed a car to get to work and college, so I bought a used 2003 Dodge Neon from a dealership with 54,000 miles on it. It ran great for the first few months, but then it started idling rough. I replaced the spark plugs and wires, and it ran well for a while. However, things went downhill after I had the transmission flushed at 62,000 miles. Two months later, the radiator ruptured, causing the transmission fluid to leak out and contaminate the coolant fluid. I replaced the radiator, but at 68,500 miles, I had AAMCO inspect it and they said that the motor mounts needed to be replaced. Unfortunately, the day before Thanksgiving, the transmission went out at 71,000 miles. The mechanic said that the coolant fluid that got into the transmission had destroyed it. I thought it would be an easy first car to maintain, but boy was I wrong!

To be honest, I didn't find this car particularly exciting. Personally, I would have preferred a Ford Focus or Mazda Protege for the same price.

I bought my 2003 Neon SXT in May 2003 and I still drive it every day. It has been the best car I have ever had. Aside from normal maintenance, it owes me nothing. It has 132,000 miles and is still going strong. I absolutely love my car! It still gets 33-35mpg, faithfully, and has no rust. I wish they still made this car. I have been looking for another one and cannot find one. Hmm, I wonder why? Because they are keepers, that's why!

It's a good car! It handles very well and the fuel economy is awesome. You won't have to spend a lot of money on fuel. The interior design is fun, sleek, and roomy, making it very comfortable. Overall, it's a great car and it's priced very well.

I've only had this car for 3 weeks, but I already love it! It's such a great, sporty little car. When the Neons first came out, I wasn't a fan of their looks and thought they lacked pep. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I was wrong. The car's design has been updated and it has more power than I expected.

Hi there! I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your car! It's great to hear that you're getting 30 mpg overall, and that you were able to get such a good deal on it. It sounds like you've taken good care of it, too. I hope you continue to have a great experience with your car!

  5. Robin Bradtke 2024-10-13

I bought this car new and have put 145K (mostly highway) miles on it so far. Absolutely no problems whatsoever. Normal maintenance, such as changing the timing belt at 100K and regular oil changes, have kept it running smoothly. It's been a joy to drive, and now that I'm working in a rural area, it's handling the rough terrain and dirt roads like a champ!
