2016 Dodge Dart problems

dodge logo

The Dodge Dart is a line of large passenger cars produced by Dodge from the 1959 to 1976 model years in North America, with production extended to later years in various other markets.

Chrysler first used 'Dart' name plates on two Italian styled show cars, in 1956 and 1957, before it became a Dodge model name.

The production Dodge Dart was introduced as a lower-priced full-size model in 1960 and 1961, but became a mid-size car for one model year for 1962, and was then reduced to a compact for two generations, from 1963 to 1976.

The Dart nameplate was resurrected for a Fiat-derived compact car that was introduced in 2012.

Common 2016 Dodge Dart problems

The Dodge Dart, produced between 2013 and 2016, has faced several common problems according to its owners. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues:

  • Engine Stalling: Several 2014 Dodge Dart owners have complained that their engine suddenly stalls or dies while they're on the road. This issue has been linked to low oil pressure, malfunctioning sensors, and faulty wiring. A software update for the engine computer has worked for some affected vehicles.
  • Suspension System Issues: Problems with the suspension system are common in the 2013 Dodge Dart. Some owners have reported that their front passenger side axle snapped without warning, even if they were not involved in a collision. Suspension system problems increase the risk of road accidents, but replacing the faulty components solves most of them.
  • Malfunctioning Transmission: The transmission system is another common problem in the 2013 Dodge Dart. Some owners have reported that their car jumped out of gear while they were on the road, made grinding noises, and got stuck at neutral. Replacing the whole transmission has solved the issue on most affected vehicles.
  • Engine Issues: The 2013 Dodge Dart has faced several engine issues, including the engine stalling during hazardous situations, loss of power, downshifting, engine failure, and dies while turning. Some of the cited fixes include updating the PCM software or replacing the engine entirely.
  • Brake System Problems: Many owners of the 2013 Dart have complained about brake-related issues, including unusual noises coming from the brake system. Chrysler Group LLC had to issue a recall for the 2013 Darts for their brake problems due to some of the Darts being outfitted with the wrong rear brake calipers.
  • Transmission Issues: The 2013 Dodge Dart's transmission is prone to malfunction and generally fails at the worst possible time. The most common fix is to replace the transmission, which also costs a lot of money.
  • Windshield Washer Pump: In April 2016, engineers were able to duplicate the failure of the windshield wiper body control module in the 2016 Dodge Dart. The recalled Darts will need a kinder, gentler pump.
  • Software Backup in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM): Certain Dodge Darts are missing a software backup in the PCM. If it fails, it won't be able to stop what FCA calls "an unauthorized torque event." FCA is recalling 1,200 model year 2016 Dodge Dart cars equipped with 2-liter engines and manual transmissions.
  • Transmission Control Module Mounting Bracket: The transmission control module mounting bracket can apply too much force and cause a transmission to shift into neutral all by itself. This issue has been reported in the 2013-15 Dodge Dart, which is equipped with dual dry-clutch transmissions.
  • Brake Pedal Issues: When pressing the brake pedal in the 2013 Dodge Dart, the brake pedal becomes very difficult to press, and there are audible hisses and pops. Braking distances increase when driving.
  • 2.4L Tigershark Oil Consumption: A serious defect in the 2.4L Tigershark engine causes an excessive amount of oil to be burned during normal operation. Owners must constantly top off the oil and have consumption tests run at the dealership, or risk the engine seizing up.
  • Stuck in Park: Some Dodge Dart owners have reported that they can't shift the car into reverse or drive. This issue has been most commonly reported from Dodge Avenger owners, but there have also been similar complaints about other Dodge makes as well as other Chrysler and Jeep vehicles.

I took it into the dealer, but they didn't seem concerned. They fixed some things and it costs around $3500. The only thing I noticed was the flashing off and on of the dashboard display which shows your speed and mileage on the vehicle and my airbag light did not display at all. My VIN number was covered up with a sticker on the dashboard of my vehicle as well and the one on the drivers door was missing. My car was stolen from Ohio and I found it in Oregon at Capitol Toyota. STEERING,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-06
  • VIN: 1C3CDFGB8GD
  • Components: STEERING,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,ENGINE
  • Summary: The Dodge dart has a malfunction that might have contributed in many crashes this car has been involved in. The issue is that some darts will experience a malfunction where the lights inside the car will randomly flicker (should they be on), digital dash will also flicker and navigation screen will either restart or just shut off. The biggest problem in all of this is that the power steering will always temporarily shut off and make it extremely hard to steer the car for a few seconds and this can happen during turns. The reset can also happen many times in a row forcing the power steering to be shut down for multiple seconds longer than the avg like 5-8 seconds. within that reset all lights on the dash will flick on and off and if you have cruise control on, it will shut off permanently until you restart the car. Sometimes the reset doesn't successfully turn on and the navigation will remain off indefinitely and will blast hot air into your cabin forcing you to park and restart your car. If your dart slows down to a stop the power steering will shut off forcing you to attempt to park your car with an extremely stiff power steering or you can restart your car for a chance to regain some assitance from the PS. Sometimes putting the car in reverse shuts off the car. The issue that the car displays when these errors occur is "Service Power Steering" or "Service Electronic Braking System" weird request when the braking is just fine. Dealership cannot diagnose this issue because the codes seemingly clear themselves as if nothing has ever happened. I have found a few others with similar issues to mine on Reddit as well as The Dodge dart forums. This issue also happens at random. There isn't a trigger or requirement for it to happen. You can be sitting at a parking lot with the car on in park and it might just reset itself for no reason and give you a stiff wheel.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-17
  • VIN: 1C3CDFBB8GD
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Since my purchase of this vehicle over two years ago, I have consistently had problems with the card shutting off while driving. It has happened no less than six times, two within the last week. Each time I have been fortunate enough to get the car to the side of the road, restart it and then continue with no immediate shut down. My local dealer has tried without success, to pinpoint the problem, but since no codes show up, they are at a loss as to what the problem may be. My grandfather, who is writing this for me, has found a number of similar complaints with Darts of various years and models. The issue is never resolved by the dealerships and the manufacturer has no known service bulletins on file. We are not sure of any accidents, but a car shutting off without advanced notice and no viable reason for the loss of power looks like a serious safety issue just waiting to claim one or more lives. The insurance company was told, but they won't do anything. If I have an accident I will probably be at fault, especially if I am blocking another vehicle's right of way. I need guidance on what legal recourse, if any that I have. The vehicle does not qualify for the PA Lemon Laws since it was purchased as a new vehicle from the dealer. Please let us know what we can do short of junking an obvious safety hazard that I still owe $13,000 in a car loan. Thank you. SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-29
  • VIN: 1C3CDFBB6GD
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Oil contamination was found it then take booster and check valve causing low brake pedal and the brake pedal to fall to the floor. The 2013 and 2014 dodge darts with a 2.4l engine had a recall. Recall number R63 / NHTSA 15V-800. “The brake booster on your vehicle may experience engine oil migration from the vacuum pump, through the vacuum supply tube, and into the brake booster. Prolonged brake booster diaphragm exposure to engine oil could cause the diaphragm to fail. This could lead to a loss of brake booster assist and/or an air leaking sound. A loss of brake booster assist could require the driver to apply additional brake pedal force to stop the vehicle. The lack of brake booster assist could change the braking characteristics of the vehicle and cause a crash without warning.” This recall needs to be extended to the 2016 models. I no longer feel safe driving this vehicle and there are no brake boosters available through the dealerships or after market.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-07
  • VIN: 1C3CDFBB0GD

  • Summary: There was no accident in this case. We lost brakes with no warning and the brake pedal got hard to press. So we changed brake pads and calibers in rear because had not be but few months on front brakes. Still no brakes they was then bleed to be sure and had little brakes and drove it home and the abs code came up and brakes went to floor. I then took it to mechanic and they check code and was abs service and he check abs brake module and was fine he then replaced the vacuum pump and still a hard brake pedal with further investigation he says the master cylinder and brake booster needs to be replaced. In doing some research on the dodge dart there is a recall for 2012-2014 dodge darts brake system which involves the vacuum pump and master cylinder and brake booster. We was able to avoid a accident but what if there are other darts the same year as ours with same issues and aren’t as lucky.

  • Consequence: Without a backup layer of software, the control module may fail to prevent an un-commanded torque event, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will update the Engine Control Module software, free of charge. The recall began on March 25, 2016. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S10.

Negative 2016 Dodge Dart car reviews

I found this rental to be quite uncomfortable. Unfortunately, I couldn't get comfortable due to my bad back, so my wife had to drive. I tried using a pillow, but it didn't help much. The headrest was also not adjustable and constantly pushed my head forward, which was quite frustrating. Despite the decent gas mileage, the car lacked any kind of wow factor. While it pains me to say it as a Ford enthusiast, you might be better off with a used car from a Japanese brand. I wouldn't keep this car even if it was given to me for free, but that's just my personal preference. If you're over 5'5 and 150 pounds, you might feel a bit squashed in this car. If that's the case, I recommend asking for another car or an upgrade.

It's unfortunate to hear that you've had a negative experience with the Dodge Dart. It sounds like the maintenance costs are quite high, and there are some design issues that have made driving less comfortable. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this model.

It's bittersweet to write this, but it's time to say goodbye to my 2016 Dodge Dart SXT 2.4L. I bought it brand new (probably for too much) and it's been my trusty companion ever since. With almost 140,000 miles, I've decided to trade it in for a vehicle with fewer miles, hoping to get another 5 years of driving out of it. Unfortunately, the Airbag Control Module malfunctioned, which is a safety concern. Despite my efforts to replace it, Dodge no longer makes the part and I've had no luck with dealerships or Mopar customer service. Despite this setback, the Dart has been a reliable car, averaging 30-32mpg over the years and still getting 29mpg with 95% highway driving. It's always been a pleasure to drive and I've never had any major issues, except for some trouble starting up over the past year. I've replaced several parts, but the issue remains a mystery. The check engine light comes on occasionally for an emissions issue, but it hasn't affected the car's performance. The only other ongoing issue is a rough engine vibration, but overall, it's been a great car. Rest in peace, Odysseus. It was real, it was fun, but it wasn't always real fun.

I had this car for almost a week and, in hindsight, I should have picked the Corolla. While the car is decent for a rental, there are better choices out there. The 2.4L engine is smooth and adequate, but the biggest issue is that the transmission has a copious amount of slack. Under steady acceleration, the transmission works just fine, but when the traffic is moving slowly, the power train slack and bounce when going into the accelerator is awful. The front seats are mounted too high for my 6'1Hey there! It seems like sales have been disappointing, but don't worry, we can work together to improve them!

This car does not meet my expectations for a full-sized vehicle. It lacks power and modern features such as USB ports. Additionally, the interior design is subpar.

Positive 2016 Dodge Dart car reviews

You made a great choice with the Dart! It's been 8,000 miles and it's still a nifty, fun, comfortable, and economical little car. It's great to hear that you're enjoying it so far!

Hi there! We bought this car with the intention of driving it until it can't go any further. We're still waiting to see how reliable it will be, but so far, so good! We opted for the sun'sound group, which includes a large touchscreen that's really easy to use. The 2.4 and manual six-speed transmission make for a fun combination, and it was easy for my partner to learn how to work the clutch. We picked it up with just 23 miles on the clock, but within the first week, we'd already put 1500 miles on it! Despite my tendency to drive it hard, we're still getting great gas mileage - comfortably in the 30s. (But let's be honest, is there any other way to drive these little cars?)

Hey there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2016 Dart GT. Even after 6 years and 66,000 miles, it still looks almost brand new and turns heads wherever I go. I can confidently say that this has been the most reliable and trouble-free car I've ever owned, beating out some really good cars like the 2004 Mazda 3s 2.3, 2007 Ford Fusion SEL v6, and 2012 Mazda 3s Touring 2.5. I have zero buyers remorse and I'm still in love with my Dart GT. When I was shopping for a car, I test drove a few different models like the 2016 Mazda 3, 2016 Volkswagen GTi & GLi, Honda Civic, and Hyundai, but my decision to buy the Dart GT was pretty easy. Plus, it's a 1 of 3 according to FCA, and I still haven't seen another one on the road after 6 years! I love having something unique, especially with its visual Alfa Romeo and Fiat DNA design cues. The clean sheet metal is a plus too. My TorRed GT has the fabulous 8.5 touch screen U-Connect system with Sirius, navigation, Technology group, Sunroof-Alpine sound, sport hood, and Mopar exterior ground effects. This car is absolutely the best dollar value blending style, size, technology, and performance. I wanted a car slightly bigger than the Mazda 3 but not quite Fusion size. Loving the USB input, it functions flawlessly with my 3800 song library on the thumb drive. This is my first car without a CD player, and I thought that was dumb at first. Now that I've had all of my music on a USB drive, it's simply amazing and powerful. I love how the system displays most of the album art. The GT cabin is truly quiet with regard to wind and road noise. Tire noise is specific to the road surface of course, but I usually don't notice any sound. My 2012 Mazda 3 was so much noisier, not even close. Thanks for listening to my story! You'll definitely feel the joints in the road, but contrary to some reviews, there's no excessive noise or jarring. The handling is crisp and reasonably flat, especially with the GT suspension. While the Mazda had stronger low-end torque from a dead stop, it came at the cost of premature tire wear due to wheel spin. The GT, on the other hand, takes off smoothly without tire spin and easily outpaces the Mazda in the medium and top ends of the run. As for technology and comfort, the GT is packed with features. The power leather heated seats, heated steering wheel, and heated exterior mirrors are all gorgeous and functional. The U-Connect system allows you to hear incoming texts and reply when the car is stopped, and the phone automatically stores your contact list with every startup. The 9-speaker Alpine sound system is more pleasing across all frequencies than the 10-speaker Bose in my Mazda because it's warmer, adds a subwoofer, a nice surround mode, and is equally detailed in all other areas. The tire pressure reading is accurate for each individual wheel, which is especially important when riding on 40 series tires. The wheels on the GT do not leak air, unlike my Mazda, which required constant air refills. In terms of style, the Alfa Romeo DNA design cues make the Dart GT stand out from the competition. The low and wide stance on a perfect 18White was my first choice with TorRed 2nd, but the dealer had the red from the car show right on their lot, which gave them a pricing advantage. However, I must say that this car was born to be red in this trim level, and I appreciate the TorRed more now than ever. When it comes to performance, my GT is a beast on those long, flat, smooth highways in Florida. It gets up to 90 mph extremely quickly and quietly without any fanfare. I drove the GT, GLi, GTi, and Mazda 3 all in the same afternoon, and the Dart GT simply screamed 'this is the one.' My CAI-Ram air adds nice power and sound. In terms of service, I've had oil changes every 5k, and at 66k miles, I've only had to replace 1 ignition coil (under 7/100k extended warranty), 1 spark plug, and one battery. I had the oil pressure sensor replaced at 61.9k miles, along with fuel injection service, and the car runs smoother and stronger than ever. Not bad for a car of this age and mileage. I'm now on my 4th set of tires, and I've upgraded the rotors and pads, along with custom caliper covers. I've also added a MOPAR cold-air-intake/Ram air hood induction, Power Stop K6373 Front & Rear Drilled/Slotted Rotors, Z23 Evolution Ceramic Brake Pads, Modern Performance carbon fiber rear spoiler, RokBlokz Mud Flaps, and Tint - 35% front & rear, 20% back.

I recently purchased a 2016 Dart GT to replace my 17-year-old Jeep. I was looking for a car that was fun to drive, spacious, and had a trunk, after years of driving SUVs and pickups. I test drove the Ford Focus and Mazda 3 sedan, but found them to be cramped compared to the Dart. The Dart handles well and gets great mileage, and I love the customizable gauge display and the 8.4 touchscreen infotainment display, which are both easy to use. I opted for the Sun/Sound package, which includes a sunroof and a 506-watt amp with 9 speakers, making it perfect for cranking up the tunes. The push-button starter with remote start is also a nice feature, allowing me to get the AC running before I even get to the car. The power driver's seat with power lumbar adjustment and automated features such as headlights, high beams, and windshield wipers make driving a breeze. The only issue I've had with the car is a rattling noise coming from the base assembly for the rearview mirror, which I was able to fix by adding weatherstripping to the assembly to isolate it from the windshield. In the 2+ years since I purchased this car, I've driven it 44800 miles and it still handles like a dream. Everything is holding up well, and it's still a joy to drive. The only minor issues I've had were with the tires, which needed to be replaced at 32000 miles, and the battery, which failed after a year and a half. Overall, I'm extremely happy with my purchase and would highly recommend the Dart GT to anyone looking for a fun and reliable car.The replacement battery is actually more powerful than the factory-installed one. Given all the electronics on this car, I think that's a good thing and probably the reason for the original battery failing so soon.

Firstly, I would like to mention that when it comes to purchasing any media, it is important to be cautious. However, this is not because the Dodge Dart is a poor choice, but rather because it is a fantastic one! I have personally owned my Dart since 3/16 and have driven over 82,000 miles without encountering a single problem. The only maintenance required has been the usual oil and filter changes, as well as tire rotations. I even replaced the spark plugs well before the 100,000 miles manufacturer PM recommendation. In addition, I average between 37-39 MPG with my 100+ mile commute to and from work (over 500 miles per tank filled). As someone who has owned dozens of Mopar vehicles (both old and current), I can confidently say that the Dart is shaping up to be the most trouble-free and cost-effective vehicle I have ever owned. I regularly receive compliments from strangers on how handsome the car is. The power is above average with 184 HP, allowing me to merge and pass any vehicle with plenty of power to spare. The handling is firm but not overly stiff or jarring. The only minor complaint I have is the occasional balky six-speed manual (6 out of 10 for shifting smoothness). Overall, if you don't mind a 4-door sedan, the Dodge Dart may be the best bang-for-your-buck option in the used car market right now. I question any person who claims to have encountered numerous problems with this vehicle since owning it new. I believe that these issues are self-induced and not a reflection of the car's build quality. Remember, if you take care of your car or truck, it will take care of you!
