2000 Dodge Neon problems

dodge logo

The Neon is a compact car that was built from in January 1994 until 2005 by the American Chrysler Corporation over two generations. It has a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and came in two-door and four-door sedan body styles. In the United States it was sold as either a Dodge or a Plymouth, while in Europe, Mexico, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Egypt, Australia, South Africa, and South America it was branded as a Chrysler, the Neon was offered in multiple versions and configurations over its production life, which lasted from the 1995 model year until 2005. The Neon nameplate was subsequently resurrected in 2016 for the Dodge Neon, a rebadged variant of Fiat Tipo sedan for the Mexican market.

1991 concept car

The Neon nameplate first appeared as a concept car in 1991 under the Dodge brand. Although radically styled and clearly not production-ready featuring sliding suicide doors, the Neon concept resembled the future production vehicle.

The Neon concept was designed by Chrysler designers who had joined the company from Chrysler's buyout of American Motors Corporation (AMC) in 1987.

Common 2000 Dodge Neon problems

The Dodge Neon, produced from 1995 to 2005, has mixed reliability reviews, but many owners have reported common problems with its components. These problems include a malfunctioning cooling fan, oil entering the spark plug tubes, and a musty smell from the HVAC system.

One of the most common problems is the failure of the Dodge Neon's cooling fan. The cooling fan is responsible for cooling the engine, and its failure can lead to overheating and potential engine damage. This issue is often caused by a faulty fan motor or a blown fuse. The problem can be diagnosed by checking the fan motor and fuses and replaced if necessary.

Another common problem with the Dodge Neon is oil entering the spark plug tubes. This issue can cause the engine to misfire, leading to poor performance and decreased fuel efficiency. The problem is often caused by worn or damaged spark plug seals, which can allow oil to enter the tubes. The solution is to replace the faulty spark plug seals to prevent oil from entering the tubes.

A musty smell from the HVAC system is also a common problem with the Dodge Neon. This issue is often caused by mold or mildew growth in the system's evaporator case. The problem can be resolved by cleaning the evaporator case and replacing the cabin air filter.

In addition to these common problems, the Dodge Neon has also had several recalls. The recalls include issues with the steering, seat belts, suspension, and exterior lighting. For example, some combination headlights and corner lamps sold as replacement lamps for the Dodge Neon did not conform to federal motor vehicle safety standards. The affected vehicles were recalled, and the non-compliant lamps were replaced free of charge.

The Dodge Neon's design has aged since its release in the late '90s and early 2000s. However, it is still a reliable and dependable car, with an annual average cost of around $526 and an average of 0.3 mechanic visits per year. The Dodge Neon's reliability and affordability make it a popular choice for many car owners.

In conclusion, the Dodge Neon has several common problems, including a malfunctioning cooling fan, oil entering the spark plug tubes, and a musty smell from the HVAC system. These problems can be resolved by replacing the faulty components. Additionally, the Dodge Neon has had several recalls, including issues with the steering, seat belts, suspension, and exterior lighting. Despite these problems, the Dodge Neon is still a reliable and dependable car, with an annual average cost of around $526 and an average of 0.3 mechanic visits per year.

Is a 2000 Dodge Neon a good car?

It's a great car and my family gets around in it just fine after 18 years. It's great on mileage and good for road trips. There are a few things that have been replaced such as the clutch, a head gasket, and now a radiator which are all inexpensive if you replace them yourself.

How many miles does a 2000 Dodge Neon last?

The Dodge Neon, while not necessarily produced as a reliably high-mileage vehicle, can have a life as long as 200,000 miles with proper care and maintenance. It's estimated that on average, the Neon will require at least one major repair within the first 120,000 miles.

Why did Dodge stop making Neons?

Even though the Dodge Neon performs well in its category, the many engines, brakes, lighting, and transmission problems have dented its popularity. A dip in popularity has resulted in Dodge stopping the Neon production completely. Dodge has introduced other new models and vehicles that have gained immense popularity.

STRUCTURE,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2002-01-01
  • VIN: 1B3ES46C1YD
  • Components: STRUCTURE,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: AS WITH A MULTITUDE OF OTHER OWNERS OF THIS VEHICLE, WHENEVER THERE IS A RAIN (HEAVY OR LIGHT), WATER LEAKS INTO THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR (MOST LIKELY THROUGH THE TRUNK, POSSIBLY AROUND THE TAILLIGHT OR ANOTHER HARD TO DIAGNOSE AREA). THE WATER WILL FILL UP THE SPARE TIRE WELL AND POOL THERE, THEN MOVE UNDER THE BACK SEATS AND THE BACK SEAT FLOORS WHERE AGAIN THE WATER POOLS AND SOAKS INTO THE LINING/CUSHIONS/INTERIOR. ALL OF THIS WATER CAUSES BOTH STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO THE BODY OF THE CAR (RUST AND OTHER ISSUES), PRODUCES MILDEW AND MOLD IN THE INTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE (A POTENTIAL HEALTH HAZARD), AND CREATES HIGHLY HUMID AND MOIST ENVIRONMENT INSIDE THE CAR. THE LEAK AND WATER HAVE ALSO AFFECTED THE REVERSE/BACKUP LIGHTING (ANOTHER HAZARD) AND RUSTED PARTS OF THE SPARE TIRE WELL. IN ADDITION THE HIGH HUMIDITY RESULTS IN INTERIOR WINDOWS BEING NOT JUST FOGGED BUT HAVING A WORRISOME AMOUNT OF CONDENSATION THAT MUST BE REMOVED BEFORE DRIVING SAFELY. NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS HAVE BEEN MADE TO "SEAL" THE LEAK IN THE TRUNK TO NO AVAIL. A QUICK INTERNET SEARCH FOR THIS PROBLEMS REVEALS HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE WITH THE EXACT SAME ISSUE OF THE LEAK. DODGE HAS NEVER ADDRESSED THIS ISSUE WITH CONSUMERS. *TR

STEERING,SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-10-17
  • VIN: 1P3ES46C6YD
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: SEVERE CORROSION CAUSED A WEAKNESS IN THE SUSPENSION CRADLE/ ENGINE CRADLE THAT RESULTED IN THE FRONT SUSPENSION CONTROL ARM TO BREAK AWAY FROM ITS MOUNTING TO THE SUSPENSION CROSSMEMBER/ CRADLE. THE CONTROL ARM AND ALL ASSOCIATED COMPONENTS SEEMED TO BE IN ACCEPTABLE CONDITION AND DID NOT EXHIBIT ANY FAILURES. THE FAILURE WAS SEVERE ENOUGH THAT THE DRIVE AXLE WAS PULLED OUT OF THE TRANSMISSION. THE VEHICLE WAS COMPLETELY UNDRIVEABLE. I WAS EXTREMELY LUCKY TO HAVE HAD THE FAILURE AT A VERY LOW SPEED WHILE TURNING INTO A DRIVEWAY. THE SAME FAILURE AT POSTED SPEED (45MPH AT THE TIME) WOULD HAVE RESULTED IN TOTAL LOSS OF CONTROL AND LIKELY SEVERE CRASH. *TR

Negative 2000 Dodge Neon car reviews

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2000 Dodge Neon automatic. I've owned it for 7 years now and it currently has 259,000 miles on it. I'm happy to report that I haven't had any major issues with it, and it still gets an impressive 30mpg in both the summer and winter! I did have to replace all 4 struts, rotors, and 1 battery over the years, but that's to be expected with any car. There is a slight tick in the engine, but overall it's still running great. Thanks for listening!

This vehicle has had some issues, including steering column, power locks and windows, minor electrical problems, and a needed AC compressor replacement. Additionally, rear brake repairs were required at 20K miles. However, it is a fun and peppy car to drive, with a nice appearance. While these issues are not ideal for a car with 50K miles and 3 years old, they do not detract from the overall enjoyment of the vehicle.

I love driving my Neon! It's the perfect size for me at 5'1, but unfortunately, my husband and tall son don't fit as comfortably. After years of use, my Neon has taken me all over the USA, racking up an impressive 100,000 miles. Recently, I had to replace the motor mounts, which made for a shaky ride, but luckily the water pump and timing belt were easy fixes. Overall, it's been a great starter car at an unbeatable price!

Hi there! Thank you for sharing your experience with your Neon. It sounds like you've had some issues with the air conditioning and sunroof, as well as some noise and vibration problems. It's great to hear that you've been able to fit comfortably in the car despite being 6'1

  5. Tre Cummerata 2024-07-04

The car has had multiple issues since we purchased it, including problems with the struts, brakes, transmission, knocking noise, and air conditioning. However, we have taken the necessary steps to address each of these issues and ensure that the car is now in excellent condition.

Positive 2000 Dodge Neon car reviews

  1. Gage Carroll 2024-11-13

This is our second Neon and, for the price, it's definitely worth the investment. You get a lot of car for the money when compared to what Honda, Toyota and Nissan have to offer. The incentives and rebates make Neon the top choice in my book. I've found that dealing with a 5-Star dealer is a definite plus.

  2. Arch Ernser 2024-11-04

All I can say is that it's a fun car to drive. It's a lot more powerful and has better acceleration compared to other vehicles in its class that I test drove before purchasing. It was also a lot more affordable.

  3. Melany Kuhlman 2024-11-02

I've had my car for nine wonderful years now, and it's been a great ride. Despite missing many service times and having over 100K miles on it, the car still runs and drives like it did when I first bought it with only 2 miles on it. Compared to my previous cars, a Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla, this car is a clear winner. Parts are cheap and readily available almost anywhere, and while the ride is a touch stiff compared to a Toyota, it's faster, lighter, and more fun to drive. The AC has never been touched and still blows freezer-like cold. My brakes seem to last almost three years with 80% left on the original drum shoes in the back. Even the factory sound system was nicer than the Civic EX I had before this. Overall, I'm really happy with my car and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable and fun ride.

  4. Charlie Barton 2024-10-29

I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your Neon! It sounds like it's been a reliable and trustworthy car for you, which is always great to hear. And it's amazing that it still looks as good as new after all these years! It's clear that you take great care of it. Even in the hot Texas summers, it sounds like the a/c is still going strong. Overall, it sounds like you made an excellent choice with your car!

  5. Gideon Volkman 2024-10-26

I like my Dodge Neon, but I have had some trouble with the back brake design. They tend to squeal when it rains or snows and I find it quite nerve-wracking. Despite this, the car is generally good. However, I have noticed a hesitation which may indicate transmission problems, something that is known to be an issue with this model. Overall, I feel fortunate with my car, especially after reading about the problems others have had. Although I wouldn't buy one again, I am still happy with my purchase.
