The Neon is a compact car that was built from in January 1994 until 2005 by the American Chrysler Corporation over two generations. It has a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and came in two-door and four-door sedan body styles. In the United States it was sold as either a Dodge or a Plymouth, while in Europe, Mexico, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Egypt, Australia, South Africa, and South America it was branded as a Chrysler, the Neon was offered in multiple versions and configurations over its production life, which lasted from the 1995 model year until 2005. The Neon nameplate was subsequently resurrected in 2016 for the Dodge Neon, a rebadged variant of Fiat Tipo sedan for the Mexican market.

1991 concept car

The Neon nameplate first appeared as a concept car in 1991 under the Dodge brand. Although radically styled and clearly not production-ready featuring sliding suicide doors, the Neon concept resembled the future production vehicle.

The Neon concept was designed by Chrysler designers who had joined the company from Chrysler's buyout of American Motors Corporation (AMC) in 1987.

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-20
  • Date Complaint: 2022-08-29
  • VIN: 1B3ES56C85D
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: No warning or engine light appeared; the gas pedal did not function as intended and accelerated while trying to parallel park when I put the shift knob in reverse the car immediately accelerated on its own to full force and I nearly Crashed into a bus stop filled with people losing control of the car I immediately managed to stop the car by pressing on the brake pedal which the car still had slight force but then I put the car in park and only at that time did it completely stop. The gas pedal and shift linkage and accelerator linkage have some dangerous unprovoked issues. This car has always had a high idle problem as warned to me by the first owners, as soon as you put the car into drive it would immediately go. I have researched recalls for years on this and have also discovered many reports of people losing control in this manner coincidentally going unaddressed. Until this occurred, I became very very apprehensive to even drive this car as I could have been held responsible for this damn malfunction costing many lives and injuries unknowingly and unprovoked. The car only has 60k miles and so far the entire dash board has cracked from sunlight falling completely to pieces that would crumble as I would drive causing distraction. The power steering belt prematurely needed replacing due to some sort of issue with the pulleys, not so long after that the alternator belt snapped needing the alternator and pulleys to be replaced again. The car during those repairs had just reached 50k miles, two batteries and the car still has electrical problems, power steering issues. This car was never involved in any major accident that would explain this other than a manufacture defect costing hundreds of dollars but there’s no cost to the lives of myself but others that you can’t put a price tag on. It’s truly a crime and absolute obvious indication of negligence that none of these reports have called for any recalls on this vehicle!

Latest negative Dodge Neon car reviews

  1. Linwood Upton 2025-01-09

    Vehicle year: 2000

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2000 Dodge Neon automatic. I've owned it for 7 years now and it currently has 259,000 miles on it. I'm happy to report that I haven't had any major issues with it, and it still gets an impressive 30mpg in both the summer and winter! I did have to replace all 4 struts, rotors, and 1 battery over the years, but that's to be expected with any car. There is a slight tick in the engine, but overall it's still running great. Thanks for listening!

  2. Davin Hyatt 2025-01-08

    Vehicle year: 1999

It's great to hear that you've owned your 99 neon sport for nearly 7 years! You've put nearly 120k miles on it and it's been a very reliable car, only leaving you stranded twice. The first time was due to a radiator leak @ 130k miles and the second was just a loose neutral safety switch. It's good to know that it performs well in snow with snow tires and that the cornering is a blast. The fuel economy ranges from 28mpg on low test in normal driving conditions to 39mpg on very long highway trips w/ high octane. Although the clear coat started to bubble up 2 years ago and the headlights have fogged over due to sun exposure and need to be replaced, overall, it sounds like you've had a great experience with this car!

  3. Armand Koss 2025-01-07

    Vehicle year: 1996

I bought this car used in 2000 and sold it in '03, which turned out to be the best decision I ever made! I purchased it to replace my aging '89 Corsica, which I loved until it started having major breakdowns. Unfortunately, this car wasn't much better and had tons of problems. It spent more time in the shop than on the road due to issues such as the oxygen sensor, battery, and alternator, just to name a few. I also had a few accidents with other vehicles and hit two different deer, which made me wonder if the red color was a magnet for attracting trouble. Despite all of this, one good thing about the car was that it got great mileage of 28/39 just going to and from work. Looks can be deceiving, but I learned a lot from this experience!

I bought my Dodge Neon used with 40,000 miles. Now, at 70,000 miles, I am looking to sell it. Although I have put in a lot of effort to maintain it, the car has not held up well. Unfortunately, I recently had to spend a significant amount of money on a tune-up, and now I am facing engine damage due to a broken head gasket. It is frustrating that Dodge continued to produce this car despite the known issues with the head gaskets. The cost of repairs is quite high, and I regret not investing a bit more in a more reliable car for peace of mind.

We purchased this car from a cousin of ours in great condition, but unfortunately, we experienced some issues with it. Despite our best efforts to maintain it, the car required numerous repairs over the course of two years. We eventually decided to part ways with it after it broke down three times in less than two weeks due to multiple issues, including a problematic head gasket. It's important to be aware of this issue, especially if the car has a high mileage. While we had a difficult experience with this car, we hope that others can learn from our experience.

Great value overall! It's amazing that this vehicle is still running strong after 200,000 miles. Although I've had a few minor problems, they were all normal wear and tear issues such as the cruise control actuator, fuel gauge sending unit, timing belt tensioner, and shifter cable ends (5-spd).

The car on the road that offers the most fun and value for your money! Can you believe it does 0-60 in just 7.5 seconds, 1/4 mile in 15.9 seconds, and reaches a top speed of 130 MPH? And the best part is, it's listed for only $13,700, with an additional $1,500 cash rebate! While the looks may not be the best, it was the top performer in its Road Race and Autocross class.

I bought this car back in '97 when it had 89,000 miles on it. Today, it has over 190,000 miles on it and it's been quite a journey. Sure, the headliner is falling, the paint is chipping, the speedometer is intermittent, the head gasket had to be replaced, and there's a hairline crack in the block. But you know what? Despite all that, this car has been an absolute joy to drive over the past 5 years. In fact, in the right hands, with a 5 speed, this car can even embarrass some Hondas, Toyotas, and a few V6s! I've started doing all the work myself and it's amazing how much you can do for cheap. The car is now on its second college student and it's been a godsend for us. It doesn't owe us a dime and it's become one of those special family cars you hear about.

I have owned this car since 2002 and it has been running incredibly fantastic. I have not encountered any problems since I became its owner. Despite having nearly 90K miles on it, I take it into L.A. every day and it runs smoothly. It has a great fuel efficiency of 35 mpg Hwy (higher than officially rated) and an unbelievable air conditioner which I can only run on low, even on hot days, because it gets so cold in the car. The AC is even better than the one in my Mercedes! Although it may not be the most attractive car, it is the most reliable car I have ever owned. I am definitely keeping it!

I got my Neon when a friend accidentally tore the clutch out. He decided to purchase an SUV instead of repairing it, so I purchased it from him for $200.00. Since then, I have replaced the clutch, transmission, front brakes, and A/C compressor clutch to make it a cool and comfortable ride. I am impressed with the car's performance and handling, which exceeded my expectations. As an affordable and economical vehicle, it is important to keep in mind that mileage and wear and tear are inevitable. Additionally, not all owners treat their cars the same way.
