The Neon is a compact car that was built from in January 1994 until 2005 by the American Chrysler Corporation over two generations. It has a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and came in two-door and four-door sedan body styles. In the United States it was sold as either a Dodge or a Plymouth, while in Europe, Mexico, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Egypt, Australia, South Africa, and South America it was branded as a Chrysler, the Neon was offered in multiple versions and configurations over its production life, which lasted from the 1995 model year until 2005. The Neon nameplate was subsequently resurrected in 2016 for the Dodge Neon, a rebadged variant of Fiat Tipo sedan for the Mexican market.

1991 concept car

The Neon nameplate first appeared as a concept car in 1991 under the Dodge brand. Although radically styled and clearly not production-ready featuring sliding suicide doors, the Neon concept resembled the future production vehicle.

The Neon concept was designed by Chrysler designers who had joined the company from Chrysler's buyout of American Motors Corporation (AMC) in 1987.

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-20
  • Date Complaint: 2022-08-29
  • VIN: 1B3ES56C85D
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: No warning or engine light appeared; the gas pedal did not function as intended and accelerated while trying to parallel park when I put the shift knob in reverse the car immediately accelerated on its own to full force and I nearly Crashed into a bus stop filled with people losing control of the car I immediately managed to stop the car by pressing on the brake pedal which the car still had slight force but then I put the car in park and only at that time did it completely stop. The gas pedal and shift linkage and accelerator linkage have some dangerous unprovoked issues. This car has always had a high idle problem as warned to me by the first owners, as soon as you put the car into drive it would immediately go. I have researched recalls for years on this and have also discovered many reports of people losing control in this manner coincidentally going unaddressed. Until this occurred, I became very very apprehensive to even drive this car as I could have been held responsible for this damn malfunction costing many lives and injuries unknowingly and unprovoked. The car only has 60k miles and so far the entire dash board has cracked from sunlight falling completely to pieces that would crumble as I would drive causing distraction. The power steering belt prematurely needed replacing due to some sort of issue with the pulleys, not so long after that the alternator belt snapped needing the alternator and pulleys to be replaced again. The car during those repairs had just reached 50k miles, two batteries and the car still has electrical problems, power steering issues. This car was never involved in any major accident that would explain this other than a manufacture defect costing hundreds of dollars but there’s no cost to the lives of myself but others that you can’t put a price tag on. It’s truly a crime and absolute obvious indication of negligence that none of these reports have called for any recalls on this vehicle!

Latest negative Dodge Neon car reviews

  1. Adriel Lang 2025-10-03

    Vehicle year: 2002

I can honestly say that this has to be one of the worst cars Dodge ever built. My fiancé and I bought ours when it was 10 years old, it only had 90,000 miles on it though. Ever since it was bought, it has nothing but problems. The owner before us was an old lady who had pasted away. She treated the car like it was her first born child so I know the issues didn't come from her driving it. The transmission is terrible. It slips, backfires, and sometimes doesn't even go into gear. The engine has terrible power and constantly leaks oil. The coolant tank leaks. The electronics are terrible. Interior lights don't work anymore. Interior is cheaply made. The dash has bubbles all over it. The back windows leak whenever it storms which makes the inside of the car soaked. The engine is extremely loud, it sounds like you have all the windows down whenever you're driving it. The car vibrates, shakes, and knocks. Headlights have terrible visibility. The only thing that's decent in this vechicle are the speakers. It has a great, stock sound system. The reason I'm writing a review on a 14 year old car is because they're cheap to buy now but I honestly wouldn't waste $500 on this car because you'll end up putting 10x that in repairs. Stay away from this car. It shouldn't have ever been made.

  2. Christ Macejkovic 2025-10-02

    Vehicle year: 1996

At first, we were happy with the car. It had a great style, spacious cabin, and good mileage. However, we did experience some issues such as the head gasket needing to be replaced and the air conditioner requiring multiple recharges. Unfortunately, at 50,000 miles, the engine started to consume oil and eventually needed to be replaced. We had to fill it with a quart of oil once a week and the speedometer only worked sporadically. Additionally, the wiring in the stereo was bad and the right-passenger-side speaker even caught fire. We also needed new tires at only about 30,000 miles. Despite these issues, we charged the A/C a week and a half before we traded it in, but unfortunately, it was out of fluid the day we turned it in.

The A/C and Oxygen Sensor have been repaired multiple times, but I have decided to forego fixing the A/C due to its cost. However, the car is enjoyable to drive and has good gas mileage. I am currently considering a head gasket repair, which may be costly. Nonetheless, I am confident in my decision to keep the car.

I was over the moon when I found my Neon R/T, white with blue stripes. It's definitely a fun car to drive, but unfortunately, I've had a lot of trouble with it since I bought it. Despite having over 150,000 miles on the odometer (I bought it at 94,000 miles), I've had to rebuild the engine twice and replace numerous parts. Additionally, the trunk and right rear seat area leak a lot of water during every rain or snow storm. However, I must say that the consistent 30 mpg is a definite plus. If it weren't for that, I might have considered getting rid of the car sooner.

It seems like there have been quite a few repairs needed for the transmission, and the struts have also been costly to fix. Additionally, the electrical system could use some improvement and the interior can be quite noisy.

I bought this car brand new back in 2004 and it has been the most reliable car I have ever owned. The cost of repairs and maintenance has been minimal, and I have been able to do most of the repairs myself. I change the oil every 3 to 4 thousand miles and as of December 2018, it has hit 253,980 miles. This car is easy to fix and parts are readily available from dealers, local shops, and Rockauto. The performance is amazing, with 0 to 60 in just 5.4 seconds, great gas mileage, and it is a great platform to modify to add horsepower and performance. The stock horsepower levels were already impressive at 230 HP, and some owners have even modified their SRTs to 300 or 400 horsepower. The SRT 4 is a lot of fun to drive. The only thing to note is that the engine noise level is a little high due to the lack of a muffler, just resonators. Shifting is okay, although you will need a new clutch about every 50 to 70K miles, even if you take it easy the whole time. If you are considering buying a used one, just be careful as many have been owned by young drivers who have not taken care of them properly.

Congratulations on your new R/T! It's great to hear that you're enjoying it more than you expected. The build quality and fuel mileage seem to have exceeded your expectations, which is fantastic. It's also great that you were able to take advantage of the Daimler-Chrysler employee discount and rebate. Overall, it sounds like you made a great choice and I'm happy to hear that you're satisfied with your purchase!

It's great to hear that you enjoy driving it, even to work. It's impressive that it fits a tall person comfortably, especially for a small car. It's also great to hear that it has been very dependable, needing only a battery and front brake pads. It sounds like it's an easy car to service.

This car has a really strong engine that is dynoed at 220 whp-230 whp stock (which is about 250 hp at the crank). The best part is that there is no need to build the stock engine with forged internals. If you're looking to upgrade, going e85 with a big wheel stock turbo is a great option. According to my tuner, you should be able to achieve over 340 whp and over 400 lb ft torque. Even better, the srt-4 engine can handle 400 whp all day in stock form. At 110,000 miles, the only thing I had replaced on the engine was the cam sensor, magnet and coil pack, which only cost me about $160. While I did have some suspension-related problems, this is typical with any high mileage vehicle (especially American-made).

Neons generally have a bad reputation, but my 2001 has been a reliable car for me. I have replaced two tie-rod ends and a fuel pump switch, but those were minor issues. The interior is spacious and comfortable, especially for my large 6 foot 2 frame. With 100K miles on it, the car still responds well and the front disc brakes and exhaust are all still factory original. While it doesn't handle deep snow well, the radio is upgraded and works well. Overall, it's infinitely more comfortable and spacious for passengers than my wife's Corolla.
