2002 Dodge Neon problems

The Neon is a compact car that was built from in January 1994 until 2005 by the American Chrysler Corporation over two generations. It has a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and came in two-door and four-door sedan body styles. In the United States it was sold as either a Dodge or a Plymouth, while in Europe, Mexico, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Egypt, Australia, South Africa, and South America it was branded as a Chrysler, the Neon was offered in multiple versions and configurations over its production life, which lasted from the 1995 model year until 2005. The Neon nameplate was subsequently resurrected in 2016 for the Dodge Neon, a rebadged variant of Fiat Tipo sedan for the Mexican market.

1991 concept car

The Neon nameplate first appeared as a concept car in 1991 under the Dodge brand. Although radically styled and clearly not production-ready featuring sliding suicide doors, the Neon concept resembled the future production vehicle.

The Neon concept was designed by Chrysler designers who had joined the company from Chrysler's buyout of American Motors Corporation (AMC) in 1987.

Negative 2002 Dodge Neon car reviews

  1. Issac Rowe 2024-09-12

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my 2002 Neon R/T 4 cyl 5 speed. While the gas mileage was better, I did have some issues with the car. Unfortunately, the wheel bearing needed replacing and all my electronics shut off one day on the highway, including my speedometer and gauges. On top of that, my e-brake failed and the brakes were not great. Recently, I was in an accident at 25 mph and the whole front end was demolished. However, I'm grateful to be okay. I did want to let you know that the airbags never deployed and the brakes didn't seem to work until the last second. I just wanted to share my experience and suggest that you may want to consider other options. Thanks for listening!

  2. Alexis Reinger 2024-08-22

Although my previous experience with a 96 Neon was enjoyable, I am disappointed with the overall performance of this '02 model. The transmission has required two repairs and the same part has broken again. Additionally, an oil leak has developed since my last oil change. Despite these issues, I remain confident in the fuel economy of this Dodge product. However, the value of the car has decreased significantly in the past few months, leaving me in a difficult financial situation.

  3. Akeem Klein 2024-05-26

I purchased my car in late March of this year, and unfortunately, it has already spent over 2.5 weeks in the Dodge Service Department due to five separate issues. These issues include a defective steering pump, a gas tank leak, lagging and strange noises in first gear, no grease in my left CV boot which caused damage to my front axle (which had to be replaced), and strange brake noises. Despite my initial intentions to support American-made products due to the 9/11 incident and poor American economy, this experience has left me disappointed and unlikely to purchase another American car in the future.

Hi there! I have a 2002 SE Neon and I absolutely love it. The only issue I have is with the amount of gas it uses. It seems like I have to fill up every three days.

-car is ~1yr old and has an average trade-in value of $5500.00. While it may not be perfect, it still has a lot of life left in it! It's important to note that this car was originally priced at $18K when it was new, so you're getting a great deal. Some minor downsides include the CD player location and lack of power, but overall it's a reliable and efficient car. Plus, the unique styling is sure to turn heads!

I have owned this car since 2002 and it has been running incredibly fantastic. I have not encountered any problems since I became its owner. Despite having nearly 90K miles on it, I take it into L.A. every day and it runs smoothly. It has a great fuel efficiency of 35 mpg Hwy (higher than officially rated) and an unbelievable air conditioner which I can only run on low, even on hot days, because it gets so cold in the car. The AC is even better than the one in my Mercedes! Although it may not be the most attractive car, it is the most reliable car I have ever owned. I am definitely keeping it!

I recently traded in my Golf 1.8t for this amazing vehicle and I must say, I'm impressed! The price is unbeatable, especially with the 2k rebate and 500 rebate from State Farm or Country Companies (Farm Bureau Member). It's loaded with options and the brakes are top of the line, even better than the new Acura. It's quick, handles great and gets outstanding gas mileage (35 mpg) on the first tank. The car is pretty roomy for a compact and has a big trunk. What's more, it doesn't look like anything on the road and there are a large number of aftermarket products available for this car. Replacement parts are also cheap, which is a huge plus, especially coming from a VW - 1,000.00 for a clutch and flywheel.

I had a 1995 Dodge Neon and it had practically all new parts in it. I replaced the transmission twice and quite a few other things. However, I really didn't like that model. On the other hand, the new 2002 Neon SXT that I have is so much fun to drive and it has a great warranty. So, if anything happens, I guess they can pay to fix it.

The car is a wonderful little fuel economy vehicle. This is my second Neon and I really appreciate the improvements made for 2002.

If you're looking for a new car that's enjoyable to drive, I'd recommend the Neon with the 5-speed. While the engine can be a bit noisy, it handles well (with no tire squeal), has good power (132HP), and looks great (especially in silver with tint and factory 15
