1997 Dodge Neon problems

The Neon is a compact car that was built from in January 1994 until 2005 by the American Chrysler Corporation over two generations. It has a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and came in two-door and four-door sedan body styles. In the United States it was sold as either a Dodge or a Plymouth, while in Europe, Mexico, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Egypt, Australia, South Africa, and South America it was branded as a Chrysler, the Neon was offered in multiple versions and configurations over its production life, which lasted from the 1995 model year until 2005. The Neon nameplate was subsequently resurrected in 2016 for the Dodge Neon, a rebadged variant of Fiat Tipo sedan for the Mexican market.

1991 concept car

The Neon nameplate first appeared as a concept car in 1991 under the Dodge brand. Although radically styled and clearly not production-ready featuring sliding suicide doors, the Neon concept resembled the future production vehicle.

The Neon concept was designed by Chrysler designers who had joined the company from Chrysler's buyout of American Motors Corporation (AMC) in 1987.

Common 1997 Dodge Neon problems

The 1997 Dodge Neon is a front-wheel drive compact sedan that has received mixed reliability reviews. While some owners have praised it for its price, power, and appearance, others have reported several common problems that can affect its performance and longevity.

One of the most common issues with the 1997 Dodge Neon is a malfunctioning cooling fan. The cooling fan is responsible for keeping the engine cool, particularly during high-speed driving or when the engine is under heavy load. When the cooling fan fails, the engine can overheat, which can cause serious damage to the engine and other components. Owners have reported that the cooling fan can fail due to a variety of reasons, including faulty wiring, blown fuses, and damaged fan motors.

Another common problem with the 1997 Dodge Neon is oil entering the spark plug tubes. This issue can cause a number of symptoms, including misfiring, rough idling, and decreased performance. The exact cause of this problem is not entirely clear, but it is believed to be related to the design of the engine and the location of the spark plug tubes. Some owners have reported that this issue can be resolved by replacing the spark plugs and the spark plug tubes, while others have had to replace the entire engine.

A musty smell from the HVAC system is another common complaint among 1997 Dodge Neon owners. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including mold growth in the HVAC system, water leaks, and dirty filters. In some cases, the musty smell can be eliminated by cleaning the HVAC system and replacing the filters. However, in more severe cases, the entire HVAC system may need to be replaced.

The 1997 Dodge Neon is also known for having engine problems, which can lead to major repairs in the next 12 months. The engine problems can range from minor issues like oil leaks to more serious problems like engine failure. Some owners have reported having to replace the entire engine due to these issues.

Overall, the 1997 Dodge Neon is a mixed bag when it comes to reliability. While some owners have reported few or no problems with their vehicles, others have experienced a range of issues that can be costly and time-consuming to repair. If you own a 1997 Dodge Neon or are considering purchasing one, it's important to be aware of these common problems and to take steps to maintain your vehicle properly to avoid costly repairs.

  • Summary: MY FIRST COMPLAINT WOULD BE ABOUT THE PAINT. MY CAR HAS BEEN PEELING FOR THE PAST 2 YEARS NOW, IT BUBBLES THEN PEELS AND GETS BIGGER AND BIGGER EVERY DAY. IT IS NOW PEELING IN 6 SPOTS, THE LARGEST IS THE SIZE OF A WATERMELON. VERY UNHAPPY!!!! SECOND, THE BRAKES ARE HORRIBLE, THE SQUEALING OF METAL ON METAL HAS BEEN OCCURRING SINCE DAY 1 OF GETTING MY CAR. I WAS RECENTLY DRIVING ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY AND MY STEERING WHEEL BEGAN SHAKING LIKE CRAZY. I PULLED OVER AND EVERYTHING SEEMED FINE. I CONTINUED TO DRIVE BUT COULD NOT ACCELERATE FASTER THAN 60KM/HR. I TRIED DRIVING MY CAR TO THE MECHANICS BUT IN THE END DID NOT GET VERY FAR. I PULLED OVER ONCE AGAIN AND NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM MY DRIVERS SIDE FRONT WHEEL. I ALSO NOTICED THE WHEEL WELL CAUGHT ON FIRE DUE TO THE FRICTION. MY CAR WAS THEN TOWED AND MY MECHANIC DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A CEASED CALIPER. BEWARE, THIS WAS SCARY. MY WHOLE FRONT END BRAKE SYSTEM HAD TO BE REPLACED. TOO ADD, I FIND IT'S HARD TO SEE AT NIGHT DUE TO A DEFECTIVE PLASTIC THAT COVERS THE HEAD LIGHTS. THEY ARE FOGGY AND DON'T GIVE OUT ENOUGH LIGHT. LASTLY, I FIND THAT THE SEALANTS ON THE WINDOWS OF MY TWO DOOR ARE HORRIBLE. I HAVE TO PUSH ON MY WINDOW WHEN CLOSING IT IN ORDER FOR THE WINDOW TO SEAL. THIS IS A BIG PROBLEM, MY CAR WAS STOLEN BECAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM. A RECALL SHOULD DEFINITELY BE CONSIDERED FOR THE PAINT, BREAKS AND HEADLIGHT COVERS AND WINDOWS/SEALS!!! *JB

AS OF 2/05, OIL LEAKING PROFUSELY VIA PASSENGER PORTION OF ENGINE GASKET. MECHANIC CONFIRMS BLOWN HEAD GASKET, SAYS THIS IS A KNOWN DEFECT OF THE NEONS AS A WHOLE. I HAVE CHOSEN TO NOT REPAIR HEAD GASKET AT MY EXPENSE AT THIS TIME. I PURCHASED VEHICLE NEW IN OCT. 1996, AS A NEW YEAR NEON FOR 1997. I MAINTAINED THE VEHICLE METICIOUSLY, AND BOTH THE BODY AND INTERIOR ARE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION (BODY HAS NO RUST). CAR HAS 88,000 MILES CURRENTLY. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN DODGE'S LACK OF CONCERN AND RESPONSIBILITY IN PRODUCING A QUALITY CAR. I BOUGHT THIS NEW AND HAD HOPE TO TRANSFER IT TO MY DAUGHTER WHO WILL BE LEAVING FOR COLLEGE SOON. REPLACING A HEADGASKET TWICE SHOULD ASSURE ME, THE BUYER, THAT I CAN MAINTAIN MY CAR WITHOUT SUDDENLY FINDING OUT THIS WAS A DAMAGED VEHICLE FROM THE GET GO, AND NOW I HAVE TO FIND ALTERNATE TRANSPORTATION TO WORK WHILE I SET TIME ASIDE TO QUICKLY FIND ANOTHER CAR. Negative 1997 Dodge Neon car reviews

I bought the Neon for my girlfriend, but I've found it to be quite fun to drive! Despite a few little noises and the driver's door opening sensor not working (even after having Dodge fix it), this little car is a brisk accelerator. I've even started modifying it, beginning with a cold air intake and moving on to the exhaust (since the manifold and muffler are shot). I bought the car with 62,000 miles on it.

Hey there! If you're not a mechanic or someone who can get cheap parts and labour, I wouldn't recommend buying this car. Unfortunately, I've had a few issues with it myself, including a leaky trunk, frameless windows that don't seal and leak into the car, a faulty head gasket, smelly AC, squeaky brakes that never shut up, a dead radiator fan relay, and steering that seizes up when you drive through puddles due to bad wiring. Just wanted to give you a heads up!

  3. Brant Renner 2024-11-20

I've been driving this car for around 2 years now, and it's been great! Although the brakes can be a bit noisy and the parking brake needs re-adjusting from time to time, I haven't had any major problems with it. It's a reliable and fun car to drive, even if you're not a 'car' person. The only thing I wish it had was ABS, but that's okay. It can be a bit slippery on wet roads, but overall it's been a great experience.

Hey there! Sorry to hear that you're not happy with your car. It sounds like you were hoping for something a bit more special. Unfortunately, it seems like the mileage isn't great and the engine isn't very responsive. Additionally, it sounds like the handling could be improved. Is there anything I can do to help you feel more satisfied with your purchase?

  5. Osvaldo Glover 2024-09-17

You have a pretty reliable car, although you may encounter some issues along the way. One common problem is the engine gasket at 60,000 miles, but don't worry, Chrysler will cover the cost if you ask them. Additionally, you may experience a fuel pump failure at 40,000 miles, but this is not a major issue. It's worth noting that you may get around 25mpg, which is a bit low for a small car.

Let's face it, this may not be a high-end car, but for what it is, it's definitely worth the money. It has been extremely dependable for me, and although I've had some trouble with the brakes squeaking from the start, they say it's just the neon. However, with proper maintenance and upkeep, it has kept me on the road and has never broken down. I've even driven it cross country several times, from IA to NC and TX to IA (4 times).

Hey there! I recently purchased a 97 Dodge Neon Sport, 2 door car from Winnipeg, Canada. The car has 70000kms (43000 miles) and I got it for only $7000 CAN, or $4500 USD. The best part? This car runs like a dream! It's fast, looks sweet, is remarkable on gas, and is cheap to fill up as well. Plus, it has plenty of aftermarket modifications you can do to it which I plan to explore in the future. So, if you're looking for a great car, I highly recommend the Neon!

  3. Gonzalo Howe 2024-08-28

Great car! Especially when swapped with a 2.4L! The SOHC engine that was in it was virtually indestructible. The interior may be a little plain and goofy, but you can swap any year neon (including the SRT-4) seats into it.

  4. Theodore Skiles 2024-07-25

This car was definitely worth the low cost. I've driven it in both cold and snowy conditions, as well as in the desert, and it has always performed exceptionally well for me. It handles nicely and has a remarkable response, hugging the curves and turning tight. Although the brakes have always been a bit noisy, they still stop the car effectively. Unfortunately, I recently discovered an oil leak, but despite having taken it to three different mechanics, none of them have been able to locate the source of the problem.

Only simple repairs needed. The Neon is very reliable. I liked it so much that I bought another one.
