1998 Dodge Neon problems
The Neon is a compact car that was built from in January 1994 until 2005 by the American Chrysler Corporation over two generations. It has a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and came in two-door and four-door sedan body styles. In the United States it was sold as either a Dodge or a Plymouth, while in Europe, Mexico, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Egypt, Australia, South Africa, and South America it was branded as a Chrysler, the Neon was offered in multiple versions and configurations over its production life, which lasted from the 1995 model year until 2005. The Neon nameplate was subsequently resurrected in 2016 for the Dodge Neon, a rebadged variant of Fiat Tipo sedan for the Mexican market.
1991 concept car
The Neon nameplate first appeared as a concept car in 1991 under the Dodge brand. Although radically styled and clearly not production-ready featuring sliding suicide doors, the Neon concept resembled the future production vehicle.
The Neon concept was designed by Chrysler designers who had joined the company from Chrysler's buyout of American Motors Corporation (AMC) in 1987.

Common 1998 Dodge Neon problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the Dodge Neon 1998, several common problems have been reported:
- Malfunctioning Cooling Fan:
- Owners have reported issues with the cooling fan failing, which can lead to overheating problems. The cooling fan is crucial for regulating the engine temperature, and when it malfunctions, it can result in engine overheating and potential damage.
- To address this problem, owners may need to replace the cooling fan to ensure proper engine cooling and prevent overheating issues that can lead to more severe engine damage.
- Oil Entering Spark Plug Tubes:
- Another common problem reported by Dodge Neon 1998 owners is oil entering the spark plug tubes. This issue can cause misfires, poor engine performance, and even lead to engine damage if not addressed promptly.
- To resolve this issue, owners may need to replace the spark plug tube seals to prevent oil from seeping into the tubes and affecting the engine's performance and fuel economy negatively.
- Musty Smell from HVAC System:
- Owners have also complained about a musty smell coming from the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) system of the Dodge Neon 1998. This unpleasant odor can be a result of mold or mildew growth within the HVAC system.
- To eliminate the musty smell, owners may need to clean or replace the HVAC system components, such as the cabin air filter, to ensure fresh and clean air circulation inside the vehicle.
These common problems with the Dodge Neon 1998 can impact the vehicle's performance, reliability, and overall driving experience. Addressing these issues promptly through proper maintenance and necessary repairs is essential to keep the car running smoothly and prevent more significant problems in the future.
How many miles can a Dodge Neon last?

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-04-27
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Crash: 1
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: 1998 DODGE NEON WAS FORCED OFF THE ROADWAY BY A MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE THAT TURNED ACROSS 19 YEAR OLD FEMALE DRIVERS LANE OF TRAVEL. SIDESWIPE CAUSED LEFT FRONT CONTROL ARM TO COLLAPSE, VEHICLE BRIEFLY BOTTOMED ONTO PAVEMENT, LEAVING A SHORT DISTANCE GOUGE MARK. THE NEON THEN JUMPED ONTO A CURB AND IMPACTED A UTILITY POLE HEAD ON AT AN ESTIMATED 27-35MPH IMPACT SPEED. THIS ACCIDENT OCCURRED ON NELLIS BOULEVARD IN LAS VEGAS, NEVADA. THE FRONTAL IMPACT AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY, FEMALE DRIVER HAD SEVERE NECK INJURIES THAT RESULTED IN A STROKE AND PERMANENT DISABILITY. TRW CLAIMS THE SYSTEM PERFORMED EXACTLY AS DESIGNED. THEY CLAIM THEIR 1998 VEAM CRASH SENSING ALGORITHM ASCERTAINED THAT THE DRIVER WOULD HAVE BEEN OUT OF POSITION AT THE TIME OF THE UTILITY POLE IMPACT AND THE DEPOWERED AIRBAG WOULD HAVE CAUSED MORE HARM THAN GOOD. I AM THE EXPERT WITNESS ON THIS CASE FOR THE PLAINTIFF AGAINST TRW. THIS DEFECT IN THE DESIGN OF THE SENSING SYSTEM IS AN INDICATION OF WHY THIS SUBJECT VEHICLE AND ITS SIMILAR MODEL YEARS HAS AN EXORBITANTLY HIGH NUMBER OF NON DEPLOYMENT OF FRONT AIRBAGS COMPLAINTS IN THE NHTSA COMPLAINTS DATABASE COMPARED TO ITS PEERS. I AM REPORTING THIS AT THE BEHEST OF DEFENSE COUNSEL, WHO CLAIMS THAT MY FAILURE TO REPORT THIS DEFECT IS ACTUALLY A FAILURE OF ME TO PROVIDE A SERVICE TO CONSUMERS. I WOULD BE GLAD TO DISCUSS THIS AND MANY OTHER CASES WITH NHTSA PERSONNEL, AS I BELIEVE THIS DEFENSE COUNSEL CRITIQUE ACTUALLY OPENS UP A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR ME TO WORK DIRECTLY WITH NHTSA TO PROVIDE MORE IMMEDIATE FEEDBACK ON SERIOUS DEFECTS THAT HAVE BEEN OCCURRING IN THE FIELD ON SOME SYSTEMS. I WOULD BE HAPPY TO DISCUSS MY PROPOSAL WITH NHTSA ON HOW WE MIGHT BE ABLE TO COOPERATE ON NARROWING DOWN FRIVOLOUS CLAIMS, BUT SETTING A HIGH PRIORITY ON REAL ISSUES THAT TYPICALLY RESULT IN LAWSUITS BUT ARE NOT NECESSARILY BROUGHT TO NHTSA'S ATTENTION. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-07-02
- VIN: 1B3ES47Y5WD
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: THE 1998 DODGE NEON IS NOTORIOUS FOR FAULTY HEAD GASKETS. THE PROBLEM IS FIRST NOTICED BY AN OIL LEAK AND THE VEHICLE OVERHEATING. THE HEAD GASKETS ARE EXPENSIVE TO REPLACE. AFTER THE CAR GETS HOT, IT STALLS AT EVERY INTERSECTION AND EVERY TIME THE VEHICLE STARTS TO SLOW DOWN OR IS PLACED IN NEUTRAL (MANUAL TRANSMISSION). MY CAR STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY INTERSECTION WHERE TRAFFIC WAS GETTING ON AND OFF OF THE FREEWAY AND WOULD NOT START AGAIN. I HAD TO GET OUT OF MY CAR AND PUSH IT TO THE SIDE OF THE FREEWAY ENTRANCE BECAUSE IT WAS THE ONLY AVAILABLE PLACE TO MOVE MY CAR TO. IT WAS FORTUNATE THAT THIS INCIDENT DID NOT CAUSE AN ACCIDENT OR RESULT IN ME GETTING INJURED. CHRYSLER IS WELL AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND HAS ISSUED AN IMPROVED GASKET REPLACEMENT KIT, (WHICH IS COSTLY) BUT REFUSES TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE PROBLEM BY ISSUING A RECALL. MY CAR NEEDS NEW HEAD GASKETS AND I HAVE BEEN QUOTED $900 FOR PARTS AND LABOR. I DON'T HAVE THAT MUCH MONEY, SO NOW MY CAR SITS PARKED IN THE STREET AND I NOW HAVE TO TAKE THE CITY BUS, WHICH CLOSEST STOP TO MY HOUSE IS 1.5 MILES, OR WALK PLACES WITH MY 3 CHILDREN IN 100 DEGREE WEATHER. I DON'T KNOW WHAT I WILL DO WHEN WINTER COMES. CHRYSLER NEEDS TO BE FORCED TO ISSUE A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM. THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS FOR THE EXACT SAME ISSUE ON WEBSITE SUCH AS MYCARSTATS.COM AND MANY FORUMS. MOST OF THE BLOWN HEAD GASKETS HAPPENED ON LOW MILEAGE VEHICLES. MY CAR ONLY HAS 89,000 MILES ON IT. IF YOU DO A GOOGLE SEARCH FOR 1998 DODGE NEON BLOWN HEAD GASKETS, YOU WILL GET OVER 80,000 LISTING OF FORUMS, DISCUSSIONS AND ARTICLES RELATING TO THE SAME PROBLEM. *TR

IN ATTEMPTS TO SEE IF IT WAS THE ACTUAL LAMP OR THE OUTSIDE REFLECTOR THAT WAS DAMAGED I WAS GIVEN ABOUT 5 SECONDS INTO MY DESCRIPTION BEFORE BEING TOLD THAT NO IT IS NOT THERE PROBLEM THAT I DID NOT HAVE THEIR LAMP IN MY CAR. AMAZING HOW THERE IS SUCH A QUICK ANSWER TO MY DESCRIPTION OF 5 SECONDS. MAYBE THERE ARE A LOT OF RECALLS FROM THEIR COMPANY BUT I WAS NOT EVEN ALLOWED TO SEE IF MY PART WAS PART OF THAT RECALL BEFORE BEING HUNG UP ON. *NM
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-12-04
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: WE WERE JUST DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN THE TRANSMISSION GAVE OUT (A COUPLE OF JERKS AND THEN NO ACCELERATION ABILITY). WE WERE ALMOST KILLED BY A SEMI WHO ALMOST RAN INTO US WHEN WE SUDDENLY AND DRASTICALLY SLOWED AND HADN'T BRAKED AND HE COULDN'T MOVE TO ANOTHER LANE BECAUSE OF OTHER TRUCKS IN THAT LANE. OUR 98 GRAND CARAVAN HAS ONLY 79K MILES ON IT AND THIS IS THE SECOND TRANSMISSION PROBLEM, (THOUGH I THINK THE FIRST TIME IT WAS REPAIRED RATHER THAN REPLACED TO THE TUNE OF $1000 AND JUST A COUPLE OF MONTHS PAST THE YEAR WARRANTY). NOW WE FIND THAT IT WILL BE $3000 TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION. WE HAVE IT SERVICED REGULARLY AT THE DODGE DEALER. WE HAVE ALSO HAD THE BATTERY REPLACED TWICE (ONCE WHEN THE FIRST TRANSMISSION PROBLEM WAS MIS-DIAGNOSED AS A FAULTY BATTERY). ALL WORK HAS BEEN OR IS BEING DONE BY THE DODGE DEALER. NOW I SEE ON THE INTERNET THAT THIS TRANSMISSION PROBLEM IS VERY COMMON WITH THIS MODEL. WHY ISN'T DODGE DOING SOMETHING ABOUT THIS INSTEAD OF GOUGING THE PUBLIC (NOT TO MENTION PUTTING US IN DANGER)?*JB

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2003-10-15
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: IN OCTOBER OF 2003 MY 2.7 LITER ENGINE WENT WITH ONLY 73,000 MILES. I CHANGED THE OIL IN THIS VEHICLE FAITHFULLY EVERY 3,000 MILES. I WAS TRAVELING THROUGH A BUSY INTERSECTION WHEN THE ENGINE BLEW. WHEN IT HAPPENED I LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE CAUSING ME TO HIT A CURB SO HARD THAT MY TIRE BLEW. I AM THANKFUL THAT IT WAS A CURB THAT I HIT. THIS OCCURRED NOT FAR FROM A MIDDLE SCHOOL WHERE CHILDREN ALWAYS WERE . I HAD MY MECHANIC LOOK AT MY VEHICLE, HE TOLD ME THAT THESE WERE THE WORST ENGINES EVER MADE, HE ALSO ADVISED ME NOT TO REPLACE THIS ENGINE NOT ONLY BECAUSE OF THE HIGH EXPENSE, BUT ALSO IT WAS LIKELY THAT I WOULD BE REPLACING IT AGAIN WITHIN A YEAR. I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW DAIMLER CHRYSLER HAS GOTTEN AWAY WITH THIS PROBLEM FOR AS LONG AS THEY HAD. I CALLED SEVERAL REPAIR SHOPS, AUTO PART STORES, AND EVEN DODGE DEALERSHIPS INQUIRING ABOUT PRICES FOR REPAIR. EVERYONE WAS WELL AWARE OF THESE ENGINES CALLING THEM DEFECTIVE, EVEN MECHANICS AT THE DODGE DEALERSHIP. THERE ALSO HAS BEEN SEVERAL CASES OF THE NEWS MEDIA DOING STORIES ON THIS SITUATION. AUTO MAGAZINES(MOTOR MAGAZINE MOSTLY) WRITE STORIES ABOUT THESE DEFECTIVE ENGINES. THE STORIES WRITTEN INCLUDE THAT SEVERAL ENGINE SPECIALIST HAVE ASSESSED THE PROBLEM AND ALL HAVE CAME TO THE SAME CONCLUSION THAT THESE ENGINES ARE DEFECTIVE AND IT IS 100% CHRYSLERS FAULT. WHAT IS GOING ON HERE? I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY DAIMLER CHRYSLER HASN'T BEEN FORCED TO DEAL WITH THIS PROBLEM. WE AS CONSUMERS HAVE SUFFERED ENOUGH DO TO CHRYSLERS NEGLECT. IN MY OPINION NO ONE SHOULD BE FORCED TO WAIT ANY LONGER.THE NHTSA IS SUPPOSE TO BE PROTECTING US FROM CORPORATIONS WHO OPERATE LIKE DAIMLER CHRYSLER. *JB

The car on the road that offers the most fun and value for your money! Can you believe it does 0-60 in just 7.5 seconds, 1/4 mile in 15.9 seconds, and reaches a top speed of 130 MPH? And the best part is, it's listed for only $13,700, with an additional $1,500 cash rebate! While the looks may not be the best, it was the top performer in its Road Race and Autocross class.
-
This car was bought as a simple commuting vehicle. However, I soon discovered how much fun it is to drive! The 5-speed transmission and DOHC engine were more than sufficient. And now, with a polished and ported head, racing cams, headers, bigger throttle body, and exhaust, it makes for a truly exciting driving experience. Plus, a body kit is being added so the looks match the performance.
-
This car is truly amazing for the price! Even after 7 years, it still outperforms other cars in its class in terms of both performance and reliability. I drove it for 132,000 miles without any issues whatsoever. Not only did I teach my two teenage daughters how to drive in this car, but we also autocrossed it for 5 years! It's hard to find another car that can match its $13,000 price tag, 7.5 sec 0-60 acceleration, 15.9 1/4 mile time, 130mph top speed, and 37+ MPG fuel efficiency. Plus, it's spacious enough to carry almost anything you need (except for a sheet of plywood). All I can say is, wow!

Hello! I just wanted to share my experience with my 1998 Dodge Neon Sport (highline). I've had it since February of 2002 and it has been a great car for me. I actually bought it to replace my 1992 Geo Tracker that was unfortunately totaled in a side impact crash in December of 2001. Since then, my Dodge Neon has been a reliable and comfortable ride that gets fairly good gas mileage. I love how it looks (a big plus for me and one of the reasons I chose a US car over an import) and it has great acceleration, handling, and a fantastic stereo! Overall, I'm very happy with my Dodge Neon and would definitely recommend it to others.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Sport Coupe, which I bought new in 1998 for only $13,000. It currently has 71,000 miles on it and I'm happy to report that it's still performing great! I get an overall 32 mpg, and an impressive 36 mpg on the interstate. It's definitely a fun car to drive! While it does require premium gas for maximum performance, I've found that mixing 89 octane with premium helps to lower the cost. In the 10 years that I've owned it, the only major issue I've had was with the water pump, which cost $600 to repair. While that was a bit pricey, I couldn't find a better deal at the time. Overall, I think it's an unbeatable choice in its segment of the market. By the way, I also have a 2003 Neon (only made as a 4-door) with a manual transmission, but it only gets an average of 26 mpg and isn't as quick or stylish as the coupe. Thanks for listening!

I bought my Dodge Neon used with 40,000 miles. Now, at 70,000 miles, I am looking to sell it. Although I have put in a lot of effort to maintain it, the car has not held up well. Unfortunately, I recently had to spend a significant amount of money on a tune-up, and now I am facing engine damage due to a broken head gasket. It is frustrating that Dodge continued to produce this car despite the known issues with the head gaskets. The cost of repairs is quite high, and I regret not investing a bit more in a more reliable car for peace of mind.

I've had my neon for about a year now and I'm really happy with it. My parents gave it to me at 98,000 miles and it now has 101,000, so it's been a reliable car for me. I love the gas mileage and dependability, although I do wish it had a bit more power when getting on the freeway. Overall, I'm just grateful to have a car that doesn't need frequent trips to the shop.

I purchased this car on 5th January 2006 with 25,000 miles on the clock. Although I had to replace the A/C compressor and a malfunctioning EGR valve, which is normal for a car of this age, I was aware of these issues before buying it. I paid $4,300 for the car, which I considered to be a decent deal despite it being a Neon. Since purchasing it, I have driven 14,000 miles without any issues. The oil remains relatively clean after 3,000 miles of mixed highway and city driving. Although the shifter isn't the most confidence-inspiring, I have driven much worse. Between May and November, I averaged 28-32 mpg, but once the weather got colder, my mpg dropped to 25-28 (I also let my car heat up for 10 minutes in the mornings). The car does have significant interior noise and rattling, but overall, I am confident in its performance and reliability.

Although I have experienced some issues with my car, I am confident in my ability to handle any situation that may arise. With only 34,000 miles on the odometer, I have already had to replace the transmission, but I am taking proactive steps to ensure that my car is in top condition. While I may feel apprehensive at times, I am confident in my ability to safely operate my vehicle.
