2003 Ford Windstar problems

The Ford Windstar (later the Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey) is a minivan that was produced and sold by Ford. The replacement for the Ford Aerostar, the Windstar adopted the front-wheel drive configuration of the Chrysler minivans. From the 1995 to 2007 model years, three generations of the model line were sold, with the final generation renamed as the Ford Freestar.

Unrelated to the Nissan-developed Mercury Villager, the Windstar was marketed without a Lincoln-Mercury counterpart. As part of the 2004 launch of the Ford Freestar, Mercury introduced its first Ford-produced minivan in a revival of the Mercury Monterey nameplate.

Following a decline in sales across the minivan segment in the mid-2000s, the Freestar and Monterey were discontinued after the 2007 model year with no direct replacement. In North America, the model line was functionally matched by the 7-passenger 2008 Ford Taurus X wagon/CUV; in Mexico, the Freestar was replaced by the Ford Transit/Tourneo. In 2014, Ford reentered the segment as the Ford Transit Connect compact MPV gained 7-passenger seating in North America.

During its production the Ford Windstar/Freestar and the Mercury Monterey were sourced from Oakville Assembly (Oakville, Ontario). In total, 1,984,232 were produced (1,704,786 Windstars, 246,493 Freestars, and 32,953 Montereys).

Common 2003 Ford Windstar problems

The 2003 Ford Windstar has been known to have several issues, based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the most common problems:

  • Rear Axle Cracking: The most significant issue with the 2003 Ford Windstar is the rear axle cracking from premature corrosion. This problem led to a series of recalls starting in 2010, with half a million units initially recalled, followed by four more recalls in 2011 and 2012, and a follow-up in 2015 for issues with the administered repairs.
  • Brake Problems: The Windstar has 1,499 complaints on file, with the biggest issue being in the brakes. Service brakes have generated 296 reports, while hydraulic brakes have generated another 282. Drivers are reporting the power brakes going out, anti-lock brakes failing, brakes seizing up, and other issues.
  • Powertrain Complaints: The Windstar has 225 powertrain complaints on file, with a recent one reporting that the transmission completely failed on the way home from the dealer.
  • Early Transmission Failure: With 9 recalls on file, 6 investigations, and countless reports of early transmission failure, the Windstar is considered unreliable. Drivers are typically reporting mileage in the low 200,000 range before the transmission totally goes out, but there are also reports as low as 100,000 before something needs to be rebuilt or swapped out.
  • Subframe Breaking: There is a major recall on the subframe of the van breaking, and Ford was buying them back and scrapping the whole vans because it was impossible to fix. This issue was reported in the 2002 and 2003 models.
  • ABS/Brake Lights Stay On: The ABS/Brake lights may stay on in the dash, indicating an issue with the braking system.
  • Sliding Door Motors: Both sides of the sliding door motors have to be replaced, which can be a significant expense.
  • Interior Issues: The interior of the Windstar has 169 complaints, including issues with the carpet/ceiling cover that needs to be replaced.

These issues can make the 2003 Ford Windstar an unreliable vehicle, and it is essential to consider these problems before purchasing one.

  • Summary: The rear axle on my vehicle snapped while I was driving causing me to lose control and leave the roadway. I contacted Ford who told me there was a recall for the rear axle of my vehicle and that I would have no out of pocket expenses for the repairs and the towing of the vehicle to the service center. After they set up the towing I received a message saying I had to pay $381 for the towing before they would dispatch the tow truck. I called Ford customer service and they told me that now they can't find in their notes where they told me towing was covered. After asking to speak with a supervisor and being told they're not going to transfer me because they know their supervisor can't do anything more then what they can do I was placed on hold for an hour just to be told they can't find it in their notes and then I was hung up on. I shouldn't have to pay almost $400 to have my vehicle that just had a catastrophic failure causing me to wreck towed for servic after I was lied to about the towing being covered

  • VIN: 2FMZA51403B
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: When driving my muffler broke loose and was dragging on the ground. My axel creaks when I stop or sit idle at a light. When several miles from home my ignition cylinder came out. I couldn't start or turn the ignition on nor operate the steering. I'm now afraid to drive my vehicle. Since acquiring it. I've put a lot of money into repairs. In addition to purchasing this vehicle, I've spent well over $2,000 in repairs. Once I learned of the recall and viewed the risks (Video) of the dangers I became grossly disturbed by what I am facing at the thought of driving. I have contacted 4 Ford Service Centers and none of them contacted back regarding fixing my 'recall'. I NEED HELP!! I have a disability and now I don't have transportation besides this car. How come no one is returning my calls? I am stranded at my home knowing that my safety is at risk. I would like to get my issue remedied with a $4,999.00 Reimbursement for this vehicle ASAP so I may invest in getting a safer one. Please give me a dealership address here in Los Angeles so I can have the vehicle towed there and be done with it. I no longer want a vehicle that I can not drive nor can get my 'recalls' remedied. Your attention to this matter is greatly appreciated.

Negative 2003 Ford Windstar car reviews

  1. Maximilian Cummings 2024-11-15

In summary, within just 12 months, I experienced 10 issues with my Limited version, including major electrical problems and a transmission failure at only 16,000 miles. Additionally, the uncomfortable second row seating and difficulty in removing the third row seat when needed made for a frustrating experience. Overall, I feel that the price of this vehicle is not worth it.

  2. Pete Kozey 2024-10-17

The design and construction of the front seats in my 2002 Windstar left much to be desired. The velour material was hot and sticky, and the seats themselves were very uncomfortable due to a weak spot near the rear that caused sinking. To address this issue, I replaced them with a pair of leather power seats from a 2001 model I found in a junk yard. Additionally, there were some issues with rattling interior plastic parts. In the future, I may consider purchasing an extended cab pick up or a large SUV.

  3. Roberto Klocko 2024-10-04

I purchased the vehicle brand new for $20K out-the-door. Unfortunately, the Service Engine Soon light came on shortly after. By 5K miles, the trim and weatherstripping were falling off and by 7K miles, all doors were rattling and squeaking. At 40K miles, the head gaskets blew and at 50K miles, the transmission failed. After 55K miles and 10 recalls later, I sold the vehicle for $3K. While I feel sorry for the next owner, I am relieved that it is no longer my problem.

This pig has been back for repairs regularly since we bought it new. Front end parts, interior pieces break, engine problems. Just replaced tranny, power steering unit, rack and pinion unit, starter, at 64000 miles. Electrical shorts abound with this car. I am fighting with Ford now. They know they have a loser in this one. Avoid at all costs. On my way to get a Honda or Toyota, US automakers do not care or build in quality.

  5. Geovanni McCullough 2024-08-25

I have a 1998 Ford Windstar GL that I purchased new in 1997. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with it such as needing a transmission replacement within 2 years and a persistent squeaking noise that has yet to be resolved. Additionally, after 4 years and 64,000 miles, the car has developed a shaking and chugging problem when stopped, accompanied by a strange noise. Despite my efforts to have it fixed, the issues persist to this day. While I have had a frustrating experience with this particular Ford product, I remain open to considering other options in the future.

This is definitely the best mini-van I have ever owned! I've had a Chrysler Town & Country, Pontiac Montana, and GMC Safari before, but the Ford Windstar has everything I need in one affordable package.

  2. Arnoldo Harvey 2024-09-24

As a new Windstar owner, I'm thrilled to say that this is the most comfortable and enjoyable ride we've ever had in a minivan. The middle and rear seating areas have an abundance of legroom, and the driver area is also very spacious. As someone taller than the average person, I'm more than satisfied with my purchase of this vehicle.

Hey there! Did you know that Puerto Rico has some of the best priced minivans around?

  4. Bennie Roob 2024-08-13

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my van. I bought it brand new back in June 2003 with only 5 miles on it. Although I've had a few issues with high idling and throttle, the mechanics were able to fix it by replacing the throttle sensor and assembly. Since then, it has been running great and I've put over 140,000 miles on it! I did have to replace the transmission at 112,000 miles, which cost around $3,300. On the bright side, it gets about 22 mpg on the highway and 17 in town. It has all the features I need and they still work perfectly, although I do wish it had a DVD player instead of the VCP. Overall, I'm really happy with my Windstar and I plan on keeping it for another 3-4 years. Thanks for listening!

  5. Vincenzo Mosciski 2024-07-26

Congratulations on your new van! It's great to hear that you have had such positive experiences with Fords in the past, and I hope this Windstar lives up to your expectations. It's impressive that you've been able to get such high mileage out of your previous vehicles without any issues. I wish you all the best on your upcoming camping trip and hope that your Windstar is able to tow your pop-up camper with ease.
