The Lincoln MKZ, is a four-door, five-passenger mid-size luxury sedan manufactured by Ford and marketed as the Zephyr (MY 2006) and as the MKZ (MY 2007–2020) by Ford's Lincoln brand across two generations in both gasoline and hybrid gas/electric models.
Both generations of the MKZ were manufactured at Ford's Hermosillo Stamping & Assembly plant in Mexico. Production ended in 2020 to make way for new Ford vehicles.
First generation (2006–2012)
The 2006 Lincoln Zephyr was initially unveiled in concept form at the 2004 New York International Auto Show, previewing a new entry-level luxury sedan. The front featured Lincoln's signature waterfall grille and jeweled quad projector beam headlights (HID headlights were available). Chrome trim extends along the Zephyr's beltline while the car's rear fascia features LED taillights and dual chrome exhaust tips. All Zephyrs featured low-profile tires on 17x7.5-inch wheels with painted aluminum versions standard and chrome versions optional.
Lincoln officially revived the Zephyr name in the fall of 2005; the vehicles were based on the CD3 platform, which was derived from the Mazda 6. Lincoln had previously used the Zephyr name in the late 1930s for the smaller Lincoln-Zephyr line of mid-size vehicles. The "Zephyr" name had also previously been used by Mercury during the late 1970s and early 1980s, for several vehicles built on the Fox Platform.
The Zephyr's sole powertrain was a 3.0 L DOHC Duratec V6 mated to an Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission; identical to the V6 powertrain that was optional in the Fusion and Milan. The interior is largely unique to the Lincoln, along with different equipment packaging. The 2006 Zephyr started at a base MSRP of $28,995 USD, ranging up to $35,340 USD when fully optioned.
Though slightly smaller and front-wheel drive, the Zephyr was marketed as a replacement for Lincoln's previous entry level mid-size, the rear-wheel drive Lincoln LS. To facilitate a smooth transition, the Zephyr and LS were sold parallel to each other during the 2006 model year, the first model year of the Zephyr and the last for the LS. For 2007 the model was renamed MKZ, and took over the LS' market with sales beginning in September 2006. Lincoln's decision to resurrect the Zephyr name refers to the very early days of Lincoln before World War II. At that time, the only Lincoln manufactured was the Lincoln K-series which was a full-size sedan, and Lincoln, under the direction of Edsel Ford, Henry Ford's only son, hoped to introduce a smaller product to compete with the Packard One-Twenty, and the LaSalle, a smaller sibling offered at Cadillac dealerships.
The Zephyr featured a revised interior from the Fusion and Milan. The design featured shapes with real ebony or maple wood inserts (depending on desired trim) in metallic frames. These surfaces were contrasted with chrome-bezeled gauges, circular, chrome-finished vents and a metallic center stack where the radio and climate controls are housed. The Zephyr's steering wheel was leather-wrapped with real wood grips and satin-nickel audio, climate, and cruise control buttons. White LED backlighting was used for the Zephyr's controls and instrumentation. Leather seating surfaces were standard in all models.
Some of these standard features in the Zephyr included: cruise control, automatic headlights, fog lights, power door locks, "global" power windows (all windows can lower simultaneously at the push of a button), power adjustable and heated mirrors with puddle lamps, remote keyless entry, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel with redundant audio and climate controls, dual-zone automatic climate control, a universal garage door opener, 10-way power driver and front passenger seats, rear-seat reading lamps, and a six-speaker audio system with an AM/FM stereo radio and a six-disc, MP3-compatible CD changer. Optional in the Zephyr was a power moonroof, a DVD-based satellite navigation system, HID headlights, heated and cooled front seats, and an industry-first THX II-Certified audio system with a six-disc, MP3-compatible CD changer and ten speakers. Safety features included standard dual front-side airbags, front seat-deployed side airbags, and curtain airbags that extend from the front to rear seats.
Mechanically the Zephyr was closely related to the Fusion and Milan. As mentioned, all three cars were based on Ford's CD3 platform, which was in turn derived from the Mazda 6. Like these cars the Zephyr is natively front-wheel drive (FWD). The Zephyr uses a coil-over damper, short- and long-arm (SLA) front suspension with double-ball-joint control arms while the rear suspension is an independent multi-link design with lower control arms and a 17 mm (0.7 in) stabilizer bar. Spring rates, bushings, and dampers have been specially tuned for the Zephyr to provide excellent ride comfort without compromising handling. All Zephyrs feature standard four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with traction control. The sole engine offered in the Zephyr was an all-aluminum 3.0 L DOHC Duratec V6 producing 221 hp (165 kW) at 6250 rpm and 205 lb·ft (278 N·m) of torque at 4800 rpm. This engine was mated to an Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission and had a final drive ratio of 3.46:1. This powertrain was identical to the V6 powertrain available in the Fusion and Milan from 2006 to 2009. With this powertrain the Zephyr could accelerate from zero to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 7.5 seconds. The FWD Zephyr came with a 17.5 US gal (66 L; 15 imp gal) fuel tank and is rated to deliver 17 mpg‑US (14 L/100 km; 20 mpg‑imp) in city driving and 26 mpg‑US (9.0 L/100 km; 31 mpg‑imp) on the highway based on the revised 2008 EPA fuel efficiency measurement standards.

- Summary: The steering wheel on my 2014 Lincoln MKZ almost came off while driving. An internet search yielded information that there was a 2018 recall on Lincoln and Ford vehicles with the same problem. I took my vehicle to the local Lincoln dealer for repair and asked them to find the recall. They told me that it had not had a recall and refused to fix it based on the recall, but at my expense. The specifics of the recall (Ford reference 18S08) were that it was for 2014-2108 MKZ manufactured in the Hermosillo Assembly Plant in Mexico. Research has shown that my MKZ was manufactured in the Hermosillo Assembly Plant. My complaint is that the recall was for an identical year, make and model in the same manufacturing plant and common sense would tell you that there was a manufacturing defect, but that FORD/Lincoln did not capture all the affected vehicles. This is a serious and dangerous problem. The steering wheel almost came off in my hands 9 years later. Lincoln should be required to identify the vehicles manufactured in that facility during that time period that were not identified for recall and contact those owners for repair at their expense. I contacted Lincoln corporate recall center and while somewhat helpful with information, they were totally uninterested in my suggestions.

But, after running a while, the following has happened, and is happening more frequently: run the car, park, and then restarting after several minutes, I have put it in gear and the engine sputters and stalls. Then has to turn over several times to restart. This has also happened after running for a while and then stopping at a long red-light, engine sputtered and stalled. Also happens when engine is warmed up and sitting still, just idling. Sputtered and stalls. With always the same result on restart, has to turn over, and over, several times. These incidences are identical to the problems described in Safety Recall Notice 16S31, which includes various other ford's and lincolns(mks, mkt) of years 2013-2015, but leaves out the mkz.

There is not notification this issue is occurring, the only evidence of the problem is the heated/cooled seats stop working.

Exposure to certain environmental conditions, such as high temperatures, high humidity, and salt air can cause the brake pedal bumper to corrode and separate from the brake pedal.
- Consequence: A separated brake pedal bumper can cause the brake lights to illuminate continuously, causing confusion to other drivers and increasing the risk of a crash. On automatic transmission vehicles, a missing brake pedal bumper can allow the driver to shift the vehicle out of the "PARK" position without depressing the brake, allowing the vehicle to rollaway, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: Dealers will replace the brake pedal bumpers and clutch pedal bumpers, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed on March 4, 2022. The headlamps may have an improper beam pattern and incorrect horizontal adjustment, the side markers may not illuminate and DOT markings may be missing. As such, these headlamps fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."
- Consequence: The incorrect headlamps may reduce the driver's visibility or make the vehicle less visible, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Ford will notify vehicle manufacturers, and dealers will inspect the headlamps, and replace the headlamps, as necessary, free of charge. Additionally, Ford will instruct dealers to return all improper headlamps and not to install them on any vehicles. The recall began June 3, 2020. I've owned some premium cars in my life, but I have never received as many compliments on any of them as I have on this ride, from people of all ages. The upgraded wheels and roof on the reserve trim make it look slick. Although the car had some interior issues due to production problems during its first year, I have driven the new ones and I'm confident that all those issues have been resolved. Buying a new Lincoln is a safe and wise choice, especially if you like the look. The new hybrids have been reworked and tuned to use more EV than my 2014, resulting in a quieter and more buttoned-up ride. The material quality has also improved significantly from my 2014 to the current 2016 models, especially in the leather and interior panels. In fact, I'm planning on leasing a new Continental when this lease is up because Lincoln's customer service has won me over. They beat BMW, Mercedes, Audi, and Lexus hands down. Lincoln picks up the car for service and leaves me with a Lincoln loaner, returning my car wherever I am. Essentially, you never have to see the dealership for service, and if you buy Black Label, you don't even need to go to the dealer to purchase. No one else does this, and it makes a huge difference.

I've owned several Lexus cars in the past, so I was a bit hesitant when my car leasing company suggested I try out a Lincoln. However, I decided to give it a chance and I've been driving the hybrid model for almost three years now - and I absolutely love it! The car looks great and handles really well, even in snowy conditions. The air conditioned seats are a real treat, and the sound system is top-notch - it feels like you're sitting in a concert hall. The moon roof is also a fantastic feature. Overall, I'm really happy with this car. That being said, there are a couple of minor issues I've noticed. The trunk is a bit small, and the back seat isn't very comfortable for larger individuals due to limited headroom. Despite these minor complaints, I'm planning on keeping my MKZ hybrid for at least another year after my lease is up. Oh, and did I mention that I get around 40 mpg in the city? It's a great bonus!

I've been driving nothing but Lincolns for over a decade, and I've had this car for a while now. Let me tell you, it's incredible! The ride is great, and the mileage is fantastic. The acceleration and handling are both awesome. The only thing I miss about the older Lincolns is that feeling of being on your couch in your living room.

I owned a Lincoln MKZ with a V6 3.7L engine and I absolutely loved it! The sound of the engine and the acceleration made driving it a joy. In my opinion, the exterior design was one of the best of that year. It was so unique and elegant that I knew I had to have it the moment I saw it at the Ford dealership. The car I owned was certified pre-owned and was flawless both inside and out. However, there were a few annoying problems that I have to mention, such as a dashboard rattle. I had experienced this before with my Fusion, which shares many parts with the MKZ. Additionally, there was an outside rattle at high speeds that my local Ford dealer couldn't fix. Unfortunately, after just 2 years of use, a number of discolorations started to show. Despite my love for this car, I will not be purchasing another Lincoln due to the quality to price ratio not being acceptable for the current price of this car.

The key fob is a crucial component of any car, and it is unacceptable for it to fall apart and leave you stranded. This issue is particularly frustrating in a car that is marketed as a luxury vehicle. I strongly advise against purchasing any Lincoln model that comes with such an unreliable key fob. Additionally, I experienced a problem with the transmission during my ownership of the car. Despite being under warranty, the dealer was unable to fix the issue after two attempts. As a result, I made the decision to sell the car.

The advertised mpg of 45 is disappointing, especially since the dealership found no issues during their check on 04/01/2014. I have previously owned Audi, VW, Honda, and Toyota vehicles, which have all lived up to their build sheet. In comparison, American brand name vehicles seem to have flaws and the salespeople may not be knowledgeable enough about the product they are selling. Additionally, the price seems too high for what is being offered.
