Ford Explorer 2002 problems
The Ford Explorer is a range of SUVs manufactured by Ford Motor Company since the 1991 model year. As the first four-door SUV produced by Ford, the Explorer was introduced as a replacement for the two-door Bronco II. Within the current Ford SUV range in North America, the Explorer is slotted between the Ford Edge and Ford Expedition. As with the Ford Ranger, the Explorer derives its name from a trim package previously offered on the Ford F-Series pickup trucks.
The Explorer has been offered in multiple chassis and powertrain layouts. The first two generations were directly derived from the Ford Ranger, switching to a model-specific chassis for the third and fourth generations. The fifth generation was repackaged as a crossover SUV, adopting a variant of the Ford Taurus chassis architecture.
Alongside the five-door Explorer wagon, a three-door Explorer wagon was offered from 1991 to 2003, officially referred to as the Explorer Sport after 1999, serving as the direct replacement of the Bronco II; the 2001–2010 Ford Explorer Sport Trac was a crew-cab pickup derived from the model line. For police use, the Ford Police Interceptor Utility has been derived from the fifth and sixth-generation Explorer to replace the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor (and the later Taurus-based Police Interceptor Sedan). Through rebranding, Mazda, Mercury, and Lincoln have sold versions of the Explorer; Lincoln currently markets the sixth-generation model line as the Lincoln Aviator.
For the North American market, the first four generations of the Explorer were produced by Ford at its Louisville Assembly Plant (Louisville, Kentucky) and at its now-closed St. Louis Assembly Plant (Hazelwood, Missouri); the model line is currently produced at Chicago Assembly Plant (Chicago, Illinois).
In 2020, CNBC reported the Ford Explorer range as the best-selling SUV of all time in America.

Common Ford Explorer 2002 problems
The 2002 Ford Explorer has been reported to have a multitude of problems, with engine malfunctions being one of the most significant issues. The SUV's timing chain tensioner has been the subject of 39 NHTSA reports, with 25 of those resulting in complete engine failure. This has led to random stalls, squealing noises, and even acceleration when braking. Additionally, 9 owners have reported experiencing full acceleration while attempting to brake, with some ultimately crashing due to this dangerous fault.
Window problems are another common issue with the 2002 Ford Explorer. Power windows have been reported to stop working, with 87 complaints specifically related to this issue. The rear liftgate window has been known to explode, with 81 complaints citing this problem. Owners have often found that the 2002 Explorer's rear window does not stay up and may even fall out in some instances. Leakage has also been prevalent for the windshield fluid and through the SUV's Moonroof.
Transmission issues are another major concern with the 2002 Ford Explorer. Reports include hard shifts, unintended acceleration, lurching, sudden loss of power, and grinding. Despite Ford's claims that the 2002 Explorer would provide 200,000 miles of joyful driving, reports show that, on average, this SUV's lifespan cuts short at 80,000 miles. Transmission slips, rattling noises, inability to shift gears, and leaking transmission fluid have been common complaints.
Electrical faults have also plagued the 2002 Ford Explorer. NHTSA complaints have found that owners have experienced the SUV's anti-theft preventing the engine from starting, airbags randomly deploying, and stuck computer messages. Over time, the Explorer's power windows have been known to stop working, and in 7 cases, the rear window has fallen out.
The 2002 Ford Explorer's hoods have been known to corrode easily, especially in rust belt states where salt is used to clear ice from roads.
In summary, the 2002 Ford Explorer has been plagued with engine malfunctions, window problems, transmission issues, and electrical faults. These problems have led to a reputation for unreliability, with the 2002 Explorer ranking No. 1 on Car Complaints' list of The Worst Vehicles.
