I bought this car in 2002 and have always wanted a VW. Despite some issues with the throttle, transmission, and ceiling upholstery, I still absolutely love this car. Recently, I had to spend $500 to replace the ignition, but now it runs smoothly. It's a nice sporty European car that turns heads, and even though I considered buying a new GTI, I realized I'm now too old for a youthful sports car. The problems I've experienced are simply due to the age of the car, not its design. It's worth noting that my car only has 82,000 miles despite being 11 years old.

Your GTI VR6 sounds like an amazing car! It's great to hear that it's still going strong after all these years. The cargo capacity is impressive, especially with the seats down. The contoured seats add to the driving experience, especially when cornering. Although, they might not be the most comfortable on long hauls. The V6 power is definitely worth the tradeoff for mileage. Overall, it sounds like a fast, fun, and versatile hatchback that I would recommend in a heartbeat!

It's such an awesome little car! It's so much fun to drive, and the sound system is absolutely amazing!

Bought my VR6 new. It's been an absolute blast to drive! I've never had a single problem with it, except for a stubborn electric passenger window. I've put 50,000 miles on it now and I would definitely buy another Volkswagen in a heartbeat.

Congratulations on your new job! It sounds like you made a great choice with your 96 GTI 2.0 as your commuter car. Not only is it fun to drive, but you're also getting an impressive 30-32 MPG. It's fantastic that you were able to find an unmodified, well-maintained car with a new interior. It's no wonder you love this little car so much! The 2.0 engine paired with the 5-speed transmission is a winning combination, and it's great to hear that the car is still structurally sound. It's also good to know that parts are affordable. Thank you for recommending the 2.0 GTI to anyone looking for a car that offers good MPG, ample hauling space, and a fun driving experience. Happy commuting!

i have owned my gti 4cyl for about 3 years. I have slowly watched it detereorate. ABS suddenly stopped working dash accessory lights blink or short out. Coolant and power steering won't stop leaking despite repairs. Can't drive 30 miles in the rain without it breaking down at least twice, despite repairs. Repairs are COSTLY! I can't even change my own spark plugs or wires due to design. It has about 113,000 mi and I can't wait to get rid of it. Consider this a warning to anyone considering buying one of these.

There is no car, for the price, that is so much fun to drive in my opinion. However, I have had some issues with it and have spent over $7000 in repairs in less than 2 years. So, I highly recommend purchasing a warranty to avoid any unexpected costs. Despite this, I still find it to be a fun car to drive.
