The Lexus GS (Japanese: レクサス・GS, Rekusasu GS) is an executive car (E-segment in Europe) manufactured and marketed by Lexus across four generations — launched in 1991 as the Toyota Aristo in Japan and as the Lexus GS for markets outside the JDM beginning in February 1993. It continued with the Toyota Aristo name for the Japanese market until January 2005.

Lexus marketed the GS as a performance sedan competing in the mid-luxury class, between its compact executive IS and large/flagship LS. The GS shared its chassis with one of Toyota's longest-running nameplates, the Toyota Crown premium sedans until 2011.

The GS featured six-cylinder engines and rear-wheel drive, with a V8 engines offered forall generations, and all-wheel drive and hybrid versions debuted in 2005. Previously, all-wheel drive versions were already made available in the Japanese-market S140 series Aristo. The first two generations had a Japanese domestic market equivalent, the Toyota Aristo (aristo is Greek for "the best"), which was sold from 1991 until the Lexus marque's domestic debut in 2005. Though largely identical in exterior and interior design, the GS and the Aristo differed in their engine and transmission combinations as well as equipment packages. The GS name stands for Grand Sedan. However, some Lexus importers use the backronymic name, Grand Sport.

The first generation Lexus GS began sales in the United States, Europe and selected Asian markets in 1993. It was originally introduced with an inline-six engine and exterior bodywork designed by Italdesign Giugiaro. The second generation model premiered in 1997, using a new platform, in-house styling, and adding a V8 version for the first time outside Japan. The third generation GS, which premiered globally for the 2006 model year, was produced in V6, V8, and hybrid versions, the latter known as the GS 450h. The third generation models were the first GS sedans to be badged as such in the Japanese domestic market.

The fourth generation Lexus GS premiered in August 2011 at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, where models introduced included the V6-powered GS 350, hybrid GS 450h, and performance-tuned F Sport variants. A lower-displacement V6 model, the GS 250, premiered at the Auto Guangzhou Exhibition in November 2011, targeted at Asian and European markets. In some markets such as North America and Asia, the GS shares the mid-size sedan category in the Lexus lineup with the front-wheel drive ES, serving as its rear-wheel-drive counterpart.

The GS was replaced in Europe by the Lexus ES from December 2018. The seventh generation ES is the first to be sold in Europe, replacing the GS in spite of being a front-wheel drive car. It went on sale from September 2018 in Russia, Turkey and other CIS markets and from December 2018 in Western and Central Europe. Production ended in August 2020.

Common 2017 Lexus Gs problems

The 2017 Lexus GS is known for its luxury and reliability, but like any vehicle, it has some common problems reported by its owners. One of the most frequently reported issues is battery drain. This problem is not caused by a faulty battery, but rather by a leakage that causes the battery to drain. This issue can be due to an electrical component, such as a computer, a light, or something that stays on all the time when it shouldn't. It is recommended to consult an auto electrician to diagnose and fix the problem.

Another issue reported by owners is related to the sunroof. Some 2017 Lexus GS owners have experienced their sunroof exploding without any external impact. This issue can be dangerous, as it can cause glass to shatter while driving, potentially leading to injuries. The average mileage at which this problem occurs is around 2,000 miles, and there is no reported average cost to fix it.

The 2017 Lexus GS also has problems with wheel bolts coming loose. This issue can be dangerous, as it can cause the wheel to detach from the vehicle while driving. The average mileage at which this problem occurs is around 31,000 miles, and there is no reported average cost to fix it.

While these issues are not widespread, they are important to be aware of when considering purchasing a 2017 Lexus GS. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent these problems from occurring or detect them early on. It is also recommended to consult the Lexus recall website to check if the vehicle has any recalls related to these or other issues.

STEERING,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-17
  • VIN: JTHBZ1BL1HA
  • Components: STEERING,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: The system which has intermittent failure on my 2017 Lexus GS350 is the lane keeping assistance safety option. The system seems to work almost perfectly on straight highways. But highways with curves seem to fail at about a 50% rate and human intervention is quickly required. The car is available for inspection and demonstration of the system failure on a nearby winding road. My safety and my wife's safety were put at risk when I realized that my car was heading for a curb and not making ANY correction. I have not taken it to a dealer or any other kind of diagnostic facility. It has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance company or anyone else. The system only has an amber warning on the dash when it detects no human inputs to the steering wheel or (I think) pressure on the steering wheel rim. There is also a dash warning when the system detects left/right lane marking swerves and it flashes "Stop for a Rest". I bought the car as a Lexus Certified Used Car just after hurricane Ian here in southwest Florida after my previous Lexus got flooded. Early on I noticed the lane departure and the lane assist on some rare instances did not respond properly. Since the car did not come with any owner manuals I could not determine whether I had not set the systems properly or not. And since the hurricane, I have not traveled long distances frequently with the car to determine a failure pattern. My son has a Lexus with similar features too but does not trust them. He said to have the dealer disable them.
