The Chevrolet Suburban is a series of SUVs built by Chevrolet since the 1935 model year. The longest-used automobile nameplate in the world, the Chevrolet Suburban is currently in its twelfth generation, introduced for 2021. Beginning life as one of the first metal-bodied station wagons, the Suburban is the progenitor of the modern full-size SUV, combining a wagon-style body with the chassis and powertrain of a pickup truck. Alongside its Advance Design, Task Force, and C/K predecessors, the Chevrolet Silverado currently shares chassis and mechanical commonality with the Suburban and other trucks.

Traditionally one of the most profitable vehicles sold by General Motors, the Suburban has been marketed through both Chevrolet and GMC for nearly its entire production. Along sharing the Suburban name with Chevrolet, GMC has used several nameplates for the model line; since 2000, the division has marketed it as the GMC Yukon XL. Since 2003, Cadillac has marketed the Suburban as the Cadillac Escalade ESV. During the 1990s, GM Australia marketed right-hand drive Suburbans under the Holden brand.

.The Suburban is sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, Chile, Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Peru, Philippines, and the Middle East (except Israel), while the Yukon XL is sold only in North America (exclusive to the United States, Canada, and Mexico) and the Middle East territories (except Israel).

A 2018 iSeeCars.com study identified the Chevrolet Suburban as the car that is driven the most each year. A 2019 iSeeCars.com study named the Chevrolet Suburban the second-ranked longest-lasting vehicle. In December 2019, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce unveiled a Hollywood Walk of Fame star for the Suburban, noting that the Suburban had been in "1,750 films and TV shows since 1952."

Common 1992 Chevrolet Suburban problems

The 1992 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 is known for a few common problems that owners have reported. The most prevalent issue is engine problems, which account for the majority of complaints about the vehicle.

One of the most common engine problems is the failure of the fuel pump. The fuel pump is responsible for delivering fuel from the gas tank to the engine. When it fails, the vehicle may experience difficulty starting, stalling, or even not starting at all. A failing fuel pump can also cause the vehicle to run rough or have reduced power.

Another engine problem is related to the timing chain. The timing chain is a critical component that synchronizes the engine's valves and pistons. When it wears out or breaks, it can cause the engine to run poorly, misfire, or even fail.

The transmission is another area where the 1992 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 has been known to have issues. Transmission problems can range from hard shifting, slipping, or even complete failure. The transmission fluid may also need to be replaced more frequently than in other vehicles.

The suspension system is also prone to problems. The front suspension bushings and ball joints may wear out, causing a rough ride, steering issues, or even a loss of control.

The brakes are another area where the 1992 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 has been known to have issues. The brake rotors and pads may wear out more quickly than in other vehicles, causing the brakes to feel spongy or even fail.

The electrical system can also be problematic in the 1992 Chevrolet Suburban 1500. The alternator may fail, causing the battery to drain and the vehicle to stall. The ignition system may also have issues, causing the vehicle to have difficulty starting or even fail to start.

The interior of the 1992 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 has also been known to have issues. The seats may wear out quickly, and the seat belts may not function properly. The interior trim may also crack or fade, and the dashboard may have issues with the gauges or warning lights.

The 1992 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 has also been known to have issues with the body and paint. The paint may chip or fade, and the body may rust. The doors may also have issues with the hinges or alignment.

In summary, the 1992 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 has several common problems, including engine problems, transmission issues, suspension issues, brake problems, electrical system problems, interior problems, and body and paint issues. Owners of this vehicle should be aware of these issues and take appropriate steps to maintain their vehicle and address any problems as they arise.

  • Summary: WHEN I BOUGHT THE TRUCK USED (85000 MLS)IT HAD A BAD FRONT END IDLER LINK AND A BAD A/C CLUTCH BEARING. NOT LONG AFTER I BOUGHT IT I HAD TO REPLACE THE ALTERNATOR. I ALSO NOTICED THAT THE BRAKES DIDN'T STOP THE VEHICLE LIKE THEY SHOULD AND I WAS SCARED TO LET MY WIFE DRIVE IT BECAUSE OF THE SPONGY BRAKES. I TOOK IT IN SEVERAL TIMES TO DIFFERENT SHOPS AND ALSO THE DEALER TO HAVE THEM LOOK AT THE BRAKES AND WAS ALWAYS TOLD THAT THE BRAKES ON THIS MODEL WERE JUST THAT WAY. I PUT NEW ROTORS AND PADS ON THE FRONT AND NEW REAR DRUMS AND SHOES AND REPEATEDLY BLED THE SYSTEM WITH SLIGHT IMPROVEMENT. IT ACTS AS THOUGH THERE IS A RESTRICTION IN THE BRAKE LINE TO BOTH FRONT AND REAR. IT ACTS AS THOUGH THEY DESIGNED THE THING NOT TO STOP QUICKLY. I UNPLUGGED THE MOTOR TO THE ABS SO THAT AT LEAST IT WOULD SQUEAL A TIRE. THE LACK OF SURE LOW SPEED STOPS HAS CAUSED 2 NEAR MISS ACCIDENTS AND 1 T BONE WHICH HAS RAISED OUR INSURANCE RATES. I HAVE LEARNED TO DRIVE THE THING ANTICIPATING STOPS AND PREBRAKING. I WENT TO THE DEALER AND JUST LIKE WITH THE WINDSHIELD WIPER CIRCUIT BOARD THAT SHORTED OUT WHEN IT GETS WET THEY TOLD ME THAT FOR MY SPECIFIC MODEL THERE WERE NO RECALLS AND THEY REFUSED TO LOOK AT IT. TO ADD INSULT TO INJURY LAST WEEK THEY SENT US A MAILER SAYING THAT THEY WOULD REPLACE MY BRAKE PEDAL WITH A DIFFERENT ONE TO GIVE ME A "BETTER FEEL". THAT WON'T DO ME MUCH GOOD IF I'M STUCK UNDER A BUS!!!!! I HAVE A VEHICLE WHICH HAS SUBSTANDARD BRAKES, WHICH WERE DESIGNED THAT WAY AND THEY WON'T DO A [XXX] THING ABOUT THEM. I LIKE A LOT OF THINGS ABOUT THE TRUCK BUT THE BRAKES SUCK BIG TIME.*AK INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 1999-12-11
  • VIN: 1GNEC16K6NJ
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: ON ANY SLICK ROAD SURFACES AT SPEED OF 10 MILES PER HOUR , WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP AT STOPSIGN. THE ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM KICKED IN. THE ANTILOCK BRAKE LIGHT AND THE BRAKE LIGHT TURN ON IN THE CONTROL PANEL. THE ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM IS SUPPOSED TO READJUST ITSELF AUTOMATICALLY IN A FEW SECONDS AFTER IT HAS BEEN DEPLOYED. BUT MY VEHICLE DOES NOT DO THIS. THIS IS THE SECOND INCIDENT THAT THE ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM HAS KICKED IN WITHIN A SIX MONTHS PERIOD SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED. THE FIRST INCIDENT INVOLVED A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SCENARIO. THE FIRST TIME THE ROADS WERE SLICK AND THE VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN ON THE HIGHWAY AT ABOUT 55 MPH. ANOTHER VEHICLE WAS ENTERING THE HIGHWAY AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED, DESPITE THE SLICK ROAD CONDITIONS. THIS VEHICLE HIT A SLICK SPOT ON THE HIGHWAY AND SLIDE COMPLETE ACROSS THE THREE LANE HIGHWAY, INWHICH I WAS TRAVELING ON THE FARTHEST LANE. THERE WERE ABOUT 4 OTHER CARS THAT HAD TO SLAM ON THEIR BRAKES AND BASICALLY COME TO A COMPLETE STOP IN ORDER TO AVOID THE VEHICLE THAT WAS SKIDDING THROUGH THE HIGHWAY. MY ANTILOCK BRAKES KICKED IN WITH A LOUD THUG. AND THE ANTILOCK LIGHT AND BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON TOO. BUT IT NEVER READJUSTED ITSELF AFTER THIS INCIDENT. THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE TAKEN INTO REPAIR TO RESET THE ABS. THE FIRST TIME HAPPENED IN JULY 1999 AND WAS REPAIRED IN EARLY AUGUST. THIS SECOND INCIDENT DID NOT WARRENT THE ABS TO KICK IN. I BELIEVE THAT THE ABS ARE OVERLY SENSITIVE AND NEED TO BE REPROGRAMED. I HEARD ON A NEWS REPORT THAT THE CHEVROLET SUBURBAN WAS BEING RECALLED FOR ITS FAULTY ABS BRAKES FROM 1999 THROUGH 1992. HOWEVER, I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO CONFIRM THAT THE 1992 CHEVROLET SUBURBAN IS BEING RECALLED FOR THIS PROBLEM. THE DEALERSHIP THAT I CALLED ABOUT REPAIRS SAID THE RECALL WAS FOR VEHICLES STARTING IN 1994, NOT 1992. I WOULD LIKE TO GET THIS RESOLVED . PLEASE LET ME KNOW THE RESULTS. THANK YOU.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-11-24
  • Number Of Injuries: 2
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1GNEC16K5NJ
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: EMERGENCY STOPS ON DRY PAVEMENT AT 30 MPH CAUSED ABS TO ENGAGE AND CAUSED 2 ACCIDENTS. IN BOTH INCIDENTS, THE VEHICLE SEEMED TO "ROLL" INTO THE CAR IN FRONT. AFTER DRIVING 30 YEARS, I HAVE A SENSE OF HOW LONG IT SHOULD TAKE TO STOP AS WELL AS BEING VERY AWARE OF HOW LONG IT TAKES TO STOP THIS HEAVIER VEHICLE AND HAVE ATTEMPTED TO COMPENSATE BY ALLOWING A GREAT DEAL OF STOPPING SPACE IN FRONT OF ME. I DO NOT FOLLOW AS CLOSE AS MOST SEMIS. WHEN THE BRAKES ARE PUSHED ALL THE WAY DOWN IN SUDDEN STOPS, THE ABS COMES ON AND MAKES A SORT OF POPPING/ROARING SOUND. IT SEEMS LIKE SOMETHING SLIPPING. I HAVE COMPLETE CONTROL OF THE STEERING AS I ROLL/CRASH INTO THE BACK OF THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME! BUT, I FEEL THAT I HAVE NO CONTROL OF THE BRAKES, AND THE DISTANCE IT TAKES TO GET STOPPED. OTHER PEOPLE WHO HAVE DRIVEN MY VEHICLE HAVE FELT THE ABS ARE UNSAFE IN SUDDEN STOPS. FORTUNATELY, I HAVE NOT HAD TO MAKE SUDDEN STOPS AT HIGH SPEEDS BECAUSE WHO KNOWS HOW MANY HUNDREDS OF FEET WOULD BE REQUIRED. SO FAR IN BOTH LOW SPEED CRASHES, TWO PEOPLE HAVE CLAIMED NECK AND BACK INJURIES, AND THEIR LEGAL SUITS ARE STILL PENDING WITH THE INSURANCE COMPANY. I LIKE THE CAR BUT WOULD NOT BUY ANOTHER SUBURBAN BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF FEELING SAFE WITH THE ABS. *AK

Negative 1992 Chevrolet Suburban car reviews

  1. Hilbert Leuschke 2024-11-05

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share some information about my SUV. I bought it back in 2001 from the original owner when it had 118K miles on it. Since then, I've put in a new transmission at 156K and taken care of other minor maintenance items. The engine still runs strong and it's been a great vehicle for hauling all of our stuff on vacations. Plus, it gets decent gas mileage for a large SUV. Of course, like with any GM vehicle, there have been some fit and finish issues with the cheap plastics and door panels. But overall, I'm really happy with it. Although I'll eventually replace it with something similar, I'm definitely going to miss it when the time comes.

Positive 1992 Chevrolet Suburban car reviews

  1. Jerad Abbott 2024-03-21

This truck is amazing! I purchased it in 1995 with 42,000 miles and it has been a reliable companion for my family's weekend trips and week-long vacations. It has plenty of room for luggage and passengers, making it perfect for long journeys. Additionally, it's a great work truck that can easily carry full sheets of drywall. Maintenance is a breeze, with only .5 quart of oil needed between changes every 3000-4000 miles. The AC has been recharged twice and is currently on its third summer since the last recharge, and it's still blowing very cold. The shocks were replaced at 120000 and the ride and handling are still great. This Suburban is a smooth cruiser at 65.

  2. Issac Wisozk 2024-02-04

We're so happy to share that our Suburban has been an absolute champ, taking us over 218,000 miles without any major repairs! Even at our high altitude of 8,000 feet in the Colorado Rockies, this vehicle has been unbeatable in the snow. We've been diligent about routine maintenance, including oil changes every 3,000 to 4,000 miles, and the engine and transmission have held up beautifully. We just wanted to take a moment to say thank you to Chevy for creating such a fantastic vehicle!

  3. Gaylord Cassin 2024-02-03

I absolutely love the Chevy Suburban! It's hands down the best vehicle I've ever driven. I've owned three Suburbans so far and I can't imagine driving anything else. Unless I happen to try something new, which is highly unlikely at this point, my next vehicle will definitely be another Suburban.
