The Cadillac CTS is a luxury car, manufactured and marketed by General Motors from 2003 until 2019 across three generations.

Initially available as a 4-door sedan on the GM Sigma platform, GM had offered the second generation CTS in three body styles: 4-door sedan, 2-door coupe, and 5-door sport wagon also using the Sigma platform — and the third generation was offered only as a sedan, using a stretched version of the GM Alpha platform. High performance sedan variants were offered for each generation, as the CTS-V — with wagon and coupe variants offered for the second generation.

Wayne Cherry and Kip Wasenko designed the exterior of the first generation CTS, marking the production debut of a design language marketed as "Art and Science," first used on the Evoq concept car. John Manoogian III directed the second generation CTS design. Bob Boniface and Robin Krieg designed the exterior of the third generation CTS.

The CTS ended production in 2019 and was replaced by the CT5, which shared its platform with the third and final generation of the CTS in addition to the smaller CT4.

These electrical problems can cause inconvenience to the owners and may require troubleshooting by a professional mechanic to identify and rectify the underlying issues.
  3. Cooling System Problems: Owners of the 2004 Cadillac CTS have faced cooling system troubles, such as overheating engines and leaks. These issues are often linked to failures in components like the water pump or radiator, which can result in engine overheating and potential damage if not addressed promptly.
  4. Suspension Issues: Suspension problems, including early wear and tear of components like bushings and shocks, have been a notable concern for the 2004 Cadillac CTS. STEERING,SUSPENSION,WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-07
  • VIN: 1G6DM577040
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,WHEELS
  • Summary: I am writing regarding a recent incident regarding the left front control arm of our 2004 CTS Cadillac. There was a recall for the lower control arm ball nut/washer attaching the control arm, which could lead to disengagement of the control arm, disengagement of the wheel and tire, and possible crash. We purchased the car in 2015. The Cadillac Service Center in Beverly Hills confirmed that they have records showing the car was inspected, and the recalled piece replaced in 2006. The dealer at that time was named Martin Cadillac. The night of [XXX], my son was driving the CTS on the freeway at about 50 mph, when the front left tire and wheel suddenly twisted out of place and rendered the car undrivable. Fortunately, he was not injured or worse, but he was stranded in the middle of a busy freeway for more than 30 minutes until AAA arrived. The car was then towed to our home and towed to our mechanic the following day. The repair needed and done was to replace the left front control arm, precisely the area noted in the recall notice. Also, it was necessary to repair the undercarriage that was damaged by the dislocated wheel and tire. The left front fender was also damaged by the action of the detached tire and wheel. The total repair cost we paid was $793.13 for the control arm and undercarriage. We are not currently driving the car, as we are concerned that the car is still unsafe. 2004 Cadillac Cts recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 2004 Cadillac Cts.

2014-09-09
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2007 Cadillac CTS-V vehicles manufactured October 6, 2003, to March 15, 2007, and 2006-2007 Cadillac STS-V vehicles manufactured June 23, 2005, to March 15, 2007. In the affected vehicles, the electrical terminals of the fuel pump module may overheat resulting in the melting of the flange material.
  • Consequence: If the flange melts, a hole may be created allowing the fuel pump to leak fuel, causing the vehicle to stall, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. Additionally, leaking fuel in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel module and fuel tank jumper harness, free of charge. GM sent out interim notices in late October. The recall began on March 12, 2015. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 14405.
2014-07-02
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 2, 2014 that they are recalling 554,328 model year 2003-2014 Cadillac CTS vehicles manufactured August 16, 2001, to April 28, 2014, and 2004-2006 Cadillac SRX vehicles manufactured March 20, 2003, to August 11, 2006. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 15, 2014. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 14172.

SEPARATION OF THE CONTROL ARM BALL STUD AND STEERING KNUCKLE, DUE TO DISENGAGEMENT OF THE TAPERED ATTACHMENT AND RETAINING NUT, IS POSSIBLE.
  • Consequence: IF THE CONTROL ARM SEPARATES FROM THE KNUCKLE, THE AFFECTED CORNER OF THE VEHICLE WILL DROP AND THE CONTROL ARM WOULD BE FORCED DOWNWARD, CONTACTING THE WHEEL. THE AFFECTED WHEEL COULD TILT OUTWARD AND CREATE A DRAGGING ACTION THAT WOULD TEND TO SLOW THE VEHICLE AND CREATE A TENDENCY FOR THE VEHICLE TO TURN IN THE DIRECTION OF THE AFFECTED WHEEL. IN EXTREME SITUATIONS, THE AFFECTED WHEEL ASSEMBLY COULD SEPARATE FROM THE VEHICLE. SEPARATION OF THE WHEEL ASSEMBLY WOULD ALSO SEVER THAT WHEEL;S HYDRAULIC BRAKE HOSE AND RESULT IN DIMINISHED BRAKING PERFORMANCE OF THE VEHICLE, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE BALL STUD JOINTS AND MEASURE THE TORQUE OF THE NUT FOR ALL FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARMS IN ALL MODELS AFFECTED AS WELL AS THE REAR LOWER CONTROL ARMS ON THE XLR AND CORVETTE. IF THE TORQUE IS NOT AT SPECIFICATION, THE DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE BALL STUD, THE KNUCKLE, AND THE NUT. IF THE TORQUE IS AT SPECIFICATION, THE DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE NUT/WASHER ASSEMBLY ONLY. THE RECALL WILL BEGIN ON AUGUST 25, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT CADILLAC AT 1-866-982-2339 OR CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438.

Negative 2004 Cadillac Cts car reviews

This car is a blast to drive, especially with the 5-speed manual and the powerful 3.2-liter DOHC V6 engine. While the interior is comfortable, it could use a bit more excitement and higher quality materials. Unfortunately, I did experience some issues with the stabilatrack after 45,000 miles and a rattle in the engine after 30,000 miles. However, overall the car is fantastic - it has great acceleration, handles well, brakes smoothly, and turns on a dime.

I bought a new 2004 CTS on August 9, 2003. Unfortunately, during a short road trip in September, the master cylinder failed and I lost my brakes. Thankfully, it was replaced under warranty within 11 days. However, on October 26, while on a longer trip, the engine suddenly died while I was driving at 70 mph on the interstate. I had to tow the car to a Cadillac dealer, but they couldn't find any errors in the car's computer. They made some adjustments and said the car was fine. Unfortunately, on November 1, the car died again on the interstate and had to be towed to the nearest dealer. After three dangerous failures in this car, we decided to switch to a Lexus. We were able to receive our money back from Cadillac, and we are now much happier with our new car.

Hi there! I'm writing to share my experience with my first Cadillac. It's a certified pre-owned car that has had regular oil changes. I was so excited to own it, but unfortunately, the timing chain broke unexpectedly, even though the manual says it shouldn't have happened at this mileage. I'm currently at the shop and the repair costs are already up to $2100. I'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue with their timing chain? Despite this setback, I'm still hopeful that the dealer will make things right. I've had some brake and shock problems in the past, but I'm still glad I made the decision to purchase an American car. Thanks for listening!

I really enjoy driving this car. When I was making my purchase, I decided to go with the 3.6 liter engine because it has timing chains that are supposed to last the lifetime of the car. In contrast, the 3.2 liter engine requires a timing belt replacement at 100k miles, and the owner's manual even warns that failure to replace it could result in severe engine damage. Unfortunately, the timing chain on my 3.6 CTS broke at 70k miles, and the dealership has estimated that the repair costs will be around $2500. Interestingly, the dealership also had another 3.6 CTS in for the same issue at the same time.

Driving this car is a lot of fun, especially with its impressive speed for a V6 engine. The car's exterior is eye-catching and the interior is great too. However, it does have some downsides such as poor fuel efficiency for a V6 and it burns about a quart every 1000 miles. It's also not the best car to drive in snowy or icy conditions. Unfortunately, I had to replace the transmission at 95,000 miles which cost me $5000 at the dealership. Additionally, I had to replace a brake caliper at 75,000 miles which cost me $850. Despite these issues, I still enjoy driving this car. However, I would recommend doing your research before purchasing to ensure it meets your needs.

The Cadillac CTS with both the luxury and sport packages is a really cool and fun car to drive. You have more quick acceleration than you need and with the addition of chrome wheels and a spoiler, you have the looks. While the CTS does not have the same soft ride as the DeVille, it makes up for it with its ability to turn on a dime and accelerate quickly.

Version 40 with more horsepower makes this car truly fun to drive. I got mine loaded with all the options except the Nav System and I absolutely love it.

I traded my 1997 Seville STS for a 2004 CTS. The difference in size and price is significant! The CTS is much more practical for my needs and budget. It's also a really fun car!!

I was in the market for a new car and this little baby filled the bill in every way! I was pleasantly surprised at how smoothly it handled both in town traffic and on the open highway. I am so glad that I bought the CTS!!

I had my 1st 04 delivered in SW Florida and I must say, the 3.6vvt is absolutely outstanding (plus it takes regular fuel). The sport package is stellar and the ride is firm yet compliant. The lumbar support for 04 is also very welcome. As someone who has owned 48 new cars, I can confidently say that this is the best overall car for fun driving and luxury. The fit and finish are perfect and the car is both quiet and solid. The new (for 04) mirror polished sport wheels are awesome. I traded in my 2001 Aurora (which I liked VERY much) but the 04 CTS is in a different class entirely. I would highly recommend it to anyone shopping in this category. It's a great value!
