2009 Volkswagen Rabbit problems

The Volkswagen Golf Mk1 is the first generation of a small family car manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen. It was noteworthy for signalling Volkswagen's shift of its major car lines from rear-wheel drive and rear-mounted air-cooled engines to front-wheel drive with front-mounted, water-cooled engines that were often transversely-mounted.

Successor to Volkswagen's Beetle, the first generation Golf debuted in Europe in May 1974 with styling by Giorgetto Giugiaro's Italdesign.

History

Replacing the Beetle; early efforts

Volkswagen began producing prototypes of possible Beetle replacements as far back as the early 1950s, and may have received design proposals from Porsche earlier than that. All of the internal projects' names started with "EA", standing for "Entwicklungsauftrag" and meaning "Development assignment". This work began during the tenure of Heinz Nordhoff, who was Director General of Volkswagen from 1948 to 1968.

In 1952 the company built the EA41 in collaboration with Pininfarina. Essentially a rebodied Beetle, it never went into production.

The first EA47 prototype appeared in 1953; at least 11 more EA47 variations were built over the next three years.

By the mid- to late-1950s, questions about the future of the Beetle began to be asked from outside the company. In 1957, an article with the title "Is the Volkswagen dated?" appeared in the West German magazine Stern. Two years later, a similar headline was used in an article in Der Spiegel weekly news.: 236

In 1958 Porsche began a project numbered 728 for a revised Beetle. A few years later this became the Volkswagen EA53. This project continued for a number of years and produced several prototypes, with early ones having bodywork designed by Porsche and later ones styled by Ghia. The EA53 eventually led to the Type 3 model.: 92

In 1957 another design study, the EA97, was started. This exercise was larger than the Beetle, but kept the usual rear-mounted powertrain. Two hundred instances of this design were built. Styling varied, depending on whether a particular car's bodywork was done by VW or by Ghia. Some cars’ looks echo the later Type 3 cars, although the EA97 was smaller. The last EA97 was built in 1960. The EA97 would provide the basis for the Brasília model from Volkswagen do Brasil.: 158

The EA158 was a Beetle-successor project that started in 1962 with a unibody study by Pininfarina. As the project progressed the car grew in size and weight. Eventually it was rejected as a Beetle replacement, but served as the foundation of the subsequent Volkswagen Type 4 model.

In 1967 another set of prototypes for possible Beetle replacements appeared in the form of the EA235 and EA235a.

In 1968 the last internal prototype for a Beetle replacement built under Nordhoff's direction appeared. This car, designated EA276, was a small three-door hatchback with front-wheel drive using a front-mounted Volkswagen air-cooled engine. The EA276 program was cancelled after the death of Nordhoff, but did find new life as the inspiration for the Brazilian Gol.

During Nordhoff's time VW did broaden its product line with the launch of the Volkswagen Type 3 in 1961 and the Volkswagen Type 4 in 1968. In 1964 the company acquired control of the Auto Union group from Daimler-Benz and with it the technologies of the constituent companies of DKW, Horch, Audi and Wanderer.

Common 2009 Volkswagen Rabbit problems

The 2009 Volkswagen Rabbit has been reported to have several common problems, with the worst category being brakes problems. This problem can lead to reduced braking performance, increased stopping distances, and potentially dangerous situations, especially in emergency braking situations.

Another significant issue with the 2009 Volkswagen Rabbit is related to its engine. The EA888 2.0-liter engine in the Rabbit has a history of tensioner problems, which can lead to a loose timing chain and catastrophic engine failure.

Other common problems with the 2009 Volkswagen Rabbit include driver door lock malfunctions, valve body not working properly, heated seats burning through, A/C not working properly, interior issues, engine problems, and transmission issues. These problems can range from minor inconveniences to significant issues that can affect the reliability and safety of the vehicle.

It is important to note that while these problems have been reported by Rabbit owners, not all vehicles will experience these issues. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and address potential problems before they become major issues. Additionally, it is recommended to consider the vehicle's history, including any previous repairs and maintenance, when purchasing a used vehicle.

  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: WVWBA71K59W
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: I am making a complaint against volkswagen for refusing to perform the abs safety recall. The ABS module is dead, I found out the hard way that I have no ABS or traction control. I stopped on the highway and lost control, I could have died and the van that hit me twice could did worse. The dealer refuses to perform the recall and is completely unhelpful. Yes there were warning lights and thats why I took it to the dealer. P.S. This happened a day before the accident. Two different VW dealers refused to perform the ABS module recall on my car even though Volkwagen customer care called to make my appointment, the car was too old, the repair was to expensive and also that the module wasnt communicating. It specifically says it in the recall, that if the module is not responding to replace it. The next day when I driving the car on the highway, I stepped on the brakes and the car started spinning on the highway, It spun into another lane and hit another car. I realized that the car did exactly what a car with no ABS would do.

THEY DID A "SYSTEM UPDATE" LESS THEN SIX MONTHS LATER WHEN DRIVING ALL OF A SUDDEN EVERY LIGHT ON THE DASH STARTED FLASHING AND THE CAR BECAME DIFFICULT TO STEER AND BREAK SO WE IMMEDIATELY TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP. AT FIRST THEY SAID IT NEEDED THE FANS REPLACED SO WE PAID $980.88 TO HAVE THAT DONE. WHEN DRIVING THE CAR HOME FROM THE DEALERSHIP ALL THE LIGHTS STARTED FLASHING AGAIN AND SO WE TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND AFTER TWO WEEKS AT THE DEALERSHIP AND "39 DIFFERENT COMMUNICATION CODES" THEY SAID THE ABS MODULE FAILED COMPLETELY AND NEEDS REPLACED. I CALLED COOPERATE VW FOR HELP BUT COOPERATE VW REFUSES TO REPLACE THE MODULE AS PART OF THE RECALL BECAUSE " IT DOESN'T SHOW A CERTAIN CODE" AND "IT DIDN'T FAIL AT THE TIME THEY DID THE SYSTEM UPDATE". THIS IS OVER A $2000.00 FIX AND WE ARE UNABLE TO AFFORD IT. I AM LEFT PAYING ON A CAR I STILL OWE $4000.00 ON THAT ISN'T SAFE TO DRIVE BECAUSE I CAN'T AFFORD AN ADDITIONAL $2000.00 TO FIX A KNOW PROBLEM THAT VOLKSWAGEN WON'T FIX. THIS IS HEARTBREAKING AND BEYOND UPSETTING WHEN THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP "AGREES THAT COOPERATE SHOULD FIX IT BUT THERE IS NOTHING HE CAN DO". HE EVEN SAID THAT THIS IS "A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH A MAJORITY OF THE CARS HE HAS BEEN WORKING ON". IT'S JUST NOT RIGHT!!!

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-07-28
  • VIN: WVWAB71K09W
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: ABOUT 4 YEARS AGO, I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY, HEADING HOME FROM WORK. THE CARS AHEAD HAD HIT THEIR BRAKES, SO I BEGAN TO HIT MY BRAKES AND IMMEDIATELY FELT THEM LOCK UP AND MY CAR BEGAN FISHTAILING. IT THEN SPUN AROUND 180 DEGREES, INCHES AWAY FROM HITTING A TRUCK BEHIND ME HEAD-ON. AFTER THIS POINT, I WAS ALWAYS WEARY OF HITTING MY BRAKES IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION BECAUSE I NEVER FELT I HAD CONTROL OF THE CAR. IT WASN'T UNTIL I RESEARCHED THE ABS ISSUES WITH VW DID I REALIZE THIS COULD HAVE BEEN DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE FAULTY PIECE. IN JULY OF 2017, THE ABS AND BRAKE LIGHTS CAME ON WHILE WE WERE LEAVING A PARKING LOT, AND STAYED ON. THESE LIGHTS WERE ACCOMPANIED BY THE CHECK ENGINE, EPC, AIR BAG, GAS AND STEERING SYSTEM LIGHTS, AND THE SPEEDOMETER ALSO STOPPED WORKING. THE CAR ALSO BEGAN TO HANDLE STRANGELY, AND WOULDN'T REV HIGHER THAN 4000 RPMS. AFTER RESEARCHING WHAT COULD BE CAUSING THIS, WE CAME ACROSS MANY ABS MODULE FAILURES THAT SOUNDED EXACTLY LIKE WHAT WE HAD HAPPENING. WE THEN CAME ACROSS THE VW ABS MODULE RECALL FROM 5 MONTHS BEFORE, AND AFTER CALLING VW TO VERIFY WE INDEED WERE PART OF THE RECALL, THEY TOLD US TO TAKE THE CAR TO A DEALER AND THEY WOULD TAKE CARE OF IT. WE MADE THE APPOINTMENT, AND TOOK THE CAR IN. THE CAR WAS IN THEIR SHOP FOR 3 DAYS BEFORE THEY LET US KNOW THAT WE DIDN'T FALL UNDER THE RECALL REQUIREMENTS, AND VW WAS IN FACT NOT GOING TO FIX ANYTHING WITH THE ABS MODULE. INSTEAD, THEY GAVE US A $1400 QUOTE TO FIX THE FAULTY MODULE. WE ARE NOW STUCK PAYING NEARLY HALF OF WHAT THE CAR IS WORTH TO MAKE IT SAFE TO DRIVE, EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE MANY ISSUES WITH THEIR ABS MODULE, AND THEY INITIALLY TOLD US WE QUALIFIED TO GET IT FIXED.

Negative 2009 Volkswagen Rabbit car reviews

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my Rabbit. I've driven it for 10,000 kms since Sep 2008 and I generally find it really fun to drive. However, on 4 separate occasions, I've had the experience of putting my foot on the accelerator and getting ZERO response. Fortunately, this has only occurred from idle (i.e. the car was stationary). After reading your review, I'm planning to take it to the dealership again and ask them to check the Knock Sensor. Thanks for the helpful information!

The vehicle is experiencing electrical and transmission issues, however, with proper maintenance and repairs, it can continue to operate efficiently beyond its current mileage of 134K.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my new car. I'm 5'3 and unfortunately, I can't reach the headrest even when it's in its lowest position. I did some research and found out that placing a cushion on the passenger seat is not recommended as it can interfere with the airbag system's proper functioning. It's a bit concerning, but I'm hoping to find a solution soon. Thanks for listening!

Positive 2009 Volkswagen Rabbit car reviews

This bunny is a great ride, even at high speeds on the German autobahn (+100mph). It's just as roomy as my '03 Passat and easier to park in Europe's tight parking garages. I did have one rough start on a chilly morning (+5F), but it cleared up in a few seconds. I did get a bit wet once from water pooled on the roof, which made it to my arm and leg before I could close the door. Just be mindful of the passenger side rear blind spot.

When it was time to trade in my old car (a '95), I looked at nearly all of the cars in the $15-20K market. I test drove the Mazda3, Vibe, Versa, Matrix, Civic, xD... they all kind of felt the same. I had resigned myself to a functional compact with few features that I could 'make do' with; then I drove the Rabbit. It was like finding religion! There is absolutely no car in this class that is nearly as fun to drive. Plus, even the base model is packed with extras. The interior is refined with quality materials. I got the 2-door 5-speed manual and I love it. I've never owned a VW before, but the Rabbit has definitely made me a believer.

Very nice! It sounds like you're really enjoying your 2009 Rabbit. It's fun, swift, and surprisingly roomy - even fitting 2 adults in the back quite nicely. It's great to hear that you've had positive experiences with fitting multiple passengers in the car. Safety is always a top priority, so it's good to know that you prioritized standard safety features. It's interesting to hear about your decision to choose the Rabbit over the Mazda 3 due to the standard ESP feature. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

This car is excellent and handles extremely well on the road. It negotiates curves like a charm. I got this car after wrecking my 07 Mazda 3 (through no fault of my own). The Mazda was a good car, but this one blows it out of the water. The Rabbit offers a smoother ride, a tighter turn radius, and generally a better grip on the road. Also, the Mazda is more expensive if you add all the features that are standard in the Rabbit. It's worth mentioning that because of this car's higher safety rating, my insurance went down significantly. From the outside, the car looks simple, but in my opinion, that simplicity gives it a more distinguished look. The laser-welded body is a big plus.

I recently upgraded from an 07 Corolla to the 09 Rabbit and I am absolutely thrilled with my decision. The Rabbit boasts a fantastic engine that sounds and performs great, and its handling is top-notch with perfect body roll. On the highway, it feels extremely solid and is a joy to drive. Additionally, it is roomy and comes with excellent safety features. While the stereo is decent but not exceptional, the transmission is smooth and the car itself has a great look. Overall, the Rabbit is a clear winner in my book, especially when compared to the more pedestrian Corolla. It is simply more fun to drive and comes with all the standard safety features that make a real difference.
