2010 Dodge Avenger problems
The Dodge Avenger is a front-wheel drive, mid-sized sedan that was marketed by Dodge. The Avenger made its North American debut in 1994 for the 1995 model year as a coupe that was produced until 2000. The model name was reintroduced to the market as a four-door sports sedan starting in 2007 for the 2008 model year. The Dodge Avenger name had earlier been used on South African market Hillman Avengers in 1975 and 1976.
The 2014 model year marked the end of Avenger production as the mid-sized models for both the Dodge and Chrysler brands were consolidated into the new Chrysler 200 introduced for the 2015 model year while Dodge received the new compact Dart.
Nameplate history
The first use of the Dodge Avenger name was on a badge engineered version of the European Hillman Avenger, exclusive to South Africa. The same car was sold in North America as the Plymouth Cricket between 1972 and 1974. In place of the Hillman engines, this version used a Peugeot 1.6 litre engine (as also installed in locally assembled Peugeot 404s) in order to satisfy local content requirements. The Dodge-branded Avenger was introduced in 1975 and was then renamed Chrysler in 1976. This generation has nothing in common with later Dodge Avengers. After Chrysler ZA was merged into Sigma in 1976, the Avenger was soon cancelled to allow Sigma to free up more production capacity for the Mazda 323.

Common 2010 Dodge Avenger problems
The Dodge Avenger, produced from 1995 to 2014, has been a popular choice among car enthusiasts and everyday drivers due to its smooth ride quality and affordable price point. However, it has trailed its competitors in key areas such as performance, interior refinement, and reliability. Here are some common problems with the Dodge Avenger, specifically the 2010 model, based on complaints from owners:
- Defective Transmission System: The 2010 Dodge Avenger has received numerous complaints about its transmission system, particularly with the locking up of the gear shift module. This issue can cause the car to get stuck in park, rendering it immobile. While the repair cost is relatively low, the problem tends to recur and can occur at low mileage (50k+).
- Engine Stalls and Shutdowns: The 2010 Avenger has also struggled with engine stalls and shutdowns, which can occur while driving, in the middle of the road, or at a red light. This is not only an expensive repair job but also a significant safety risk.
- Faulty Electrical System: The 2011 Avenger, while not as problematic as some models, has experienced issues with its electrical system, particularly with the air conditioning system. Users have reported that the A/C and heating systems do not function as they should, with some experiencing a lack of heat on the left side of the car or the A/C system activating even when the controls are set to the off position.
- Squealing Brakes: The Dodge Avenger has been known to have squeaking brakes, which can be a major issue if not addressed promptly. This problem can cause the wires to short circuit, leading to engine fires.
- Stuck in Park: The 2008, 2012, and 2014 Dodge Avenger models have experienced issues with the gear shift module, causing the car to get stuck in park. This issue can be caused by faulty connectors, which can lead to engine overheating or the A/C system stopping to work.
- AHR Randomly Deploys: The 2010 Avenger has experienced issues with the AHR (Automatic Headlamp Return) system, where the headlamps randomly deploy while driving or when the vehicle is turned off.
- Defective TIPM: The 2010 Avenger has also had problems with the TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module), which can cause multiple electrical problems, including issues with the power windows, power locks, and power mirrors.
- Stuck in Neutral: Some Dodge Avenger owners have reported issues with the car getting stuck in neutral, which can be caused by a faulty transmission or a problem with the shift cable.
- Check Engine Light Due to Speed Sensor Issue: The 2010 Avenger has experienced issues with the speed sensor, which can cause the check engine light to come on. This issue can be caused by a faulty sensor or a problem with the wiring.
While the Dodge Avenger has its share of problems, many of these issues can be addressed with proper maintenance and repair. However, it is essential to research the reliability and common problems of the model year you want to buy before making a purchase.

I went from a Dodge caravan to this and was hoping for better fuel efficiency. However, I'm only getting 21mpg with 80% city driving. While it may not be the fastest car, it suits my needs and my kids can easily get in and out. Plus, it's a great affordable car that looks sharp both inside and out.

I bought my 2009 sxt (2.7l v
) in November of 2008 and I absolutely love it! The construction is solid, the design is beautiful, and the performance is fast. Overall, it's a fantastic car! It's unfair for car & driver and Edmund's to slam it just because it's not an import. They rank it low on 'fun to drive,' but I strongly disagree. This car is an absolute blast!
-
I'm so glad to hear that you've had several great trips in this car and that you love it! It has excellent looks, a quiet ride, great pick up, and excellent steering. It feels like a good, solid car. I completely understand what you mean about the 'professional' reviews - it's like they were driving a completely different car!

I purchased my '09 Avenger SXT at the end of June, trading in my trusty '03 Intrepid. While the Intrepid had served me well, it was time for an upgrade, and I was excited to switch back to a 4-cylinder engine. During the test drive, I was pleasantly surprised by the car's performance, which exceeded my expectations. Two months later, I am still thrilled with my purchase. The satellite radio is a great feature, and the interior is spacious and comfortable. The car handles with ease and is incredibly smooth. I did encounter a blind spot issue, but I was able to resolve it quickly. Overall, I am very satisfied with my Avenger SXT!
-
The 2009 Avenger SXT is a great car, but the chrome/silver trim around and on the gear shifter can be a bit of a nuisance. The sun reflecting off the trim during the day can be distracting and even obstructive to the driver's view. However, this issue can be easily resolved by replacing the trim with a non-reflective material. With this simple modification, driving the Avenger SXT will be an even more enjoyable experience.

The 2010 vehicle comes with a 4-speed transmission, but unfortunately, it doesn't offer very good gas mileage for a 4-cylinder engine. Additionally, the shifts can be a bit rough and the motor is quite underpowered. On top of that, the vehicle isn't very comfortable or roomy. However, we appreciate your feedback and will take it into consideration for future improvements.
Uriel Kerluke 2024-05-26
I recently purchased a Chrysler Dodge vehicle and unfortunately feel misled. Despite purchasing the 2010 Avenger SXT model based on the 2009 booklet and showroom model, I discovered that it does not come with the standard options of the 2009 SXT. While the ride is quiet and the satellite radio is great, I was disappointed to find that it does not include a power seat, despite being told that it would have 'all the power'. As a result of this experience, I have decided not to purchase another Chrysler Dodge product in the future.

I noticed that I have already driven 16k miles. I use my car all the time, but I have to admit that the seats are quite hard and the back seat feels a bit cramped. I also find that the front seat could be more comfortable if it were flatter. Unfortunately, I haven't had great gas mileage either. Additionally, the visibility is not great and there are some blind spots.

I have had a very negative experience with this particular car model. It has required frequent repairs and has been unreliable. Based on my personal experience, I would not recommend purchasing any DODGE products.
