2004 Chevrolet Aveo problems
The Chevrolet Aveo (/əˈveɪ.oʊ/ ə-VAY-oh) is a five-passenger, front-drive subcompact car (B-segment) marketed by General Motors (GM) since 2002 over two generations. Originally developed by South Korean manufacturer Daewoo Motors and marketed as the Daewoo Kalos, the takeover of Daewoo by GM to form GM Daewoo Auto & Technology (GMDAT) resulted in the car's marketing in 120 countries under seven brands (Chevrolet, Daewoo, ZAZ, Holden, Pontiac, Ravon and Suzuki) — prominently as the Aveo.
The second-generation Aveo, developed by GM Korea (formerly GMDAT), was introduced in 2011 and was also marketed as the Chevrolet Sonic in markets including the Americas, Japan, Middle East, South Africa and several Southeast Asian markets. Production of the second-generation model ended in October 2020.
Since 2017, GM marketed the Chinese market Chevrolet Sail sedan in Mexico and other Central American countries as the Aveo. Developed by GM PATAC in China and produced by joint venture SAIC-GM, it was positioned below the more advanced Sonic. In 2023, GM imported a new version to Mexico in a sedan and hatchback form, developed and manufactured by another Chinese joint venture, SAIC-GM-Wuling.

Are Chevy Aveos good on gas?
However, the Aveo largely abandoned this niche. For a start, fuel economy was surprisingly poor for such a little car. The EPA rated it at 27 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined in old three-cycle testing, and that's if you didn't opt for the four-speed automatic.
What happens when timing belt breaks on a Chevy Aveo?
Many motorists are unaware of these recommendations and typically do nothing until the timing belt fails — which is bad news because the 1.6L E-TECH II engine is an interference engine. If the timing belt breaks, one or more valves will hit the pistons and damage the engine.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-09-12
- VIN: KL1TD66647B
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: WHAT'S WITH AVEO'S PASSENGER SIDE WINDSHIELD WIPER? IT SKIDS OFF THE WINDOW AND WIPES THE TRIM. WHEN I FIRST BOUGHT MY CAR I THOUGHT SOMEONE MADE A MISTAKE AND PUT ON THE WRONG SIZE. WHEN THEY NEEDED REPLACED, I REPLACED THE WHOLE ARM WITH A SET MATCHING MAKER SPECIFICATIONS. AND MADE NO IMPROVEMENT AT ALL. THE TIP OF THE PASSENGER SIDE WIPER STILL SWINGS CLEAR OFF THE WINDOW. DID SOMEBODY MAKE OFF WITH THE DESIGNER'S RULER? ANY CHANCE THEY MIGHT GIVE IT BACK? I'D REALLY LIKE A WINDSHIELD WIPER THAT FITS; DON'T REALLY NEED ONE FOR THE TRIM...

I FEAR THERE WILL BE AN ELECTRICAL FIRE STARTING SOON, AND HAVE ALREADY DECIDED TO STOP AT INTERVALS TO TURN THE IGNITION OFF SO IT COOLS DOWN. IT DOESN'T MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE IF IT'S DRIVEN FAST OR SLOW, DRIVING STILL HEATS UP THE IGNITION SWITCH. THE ONLY ODD OCCURRENCE THAT MIGHT BE SOMEHOW CONNECTED IS THE RIGHT TURN SIGNAL BULB NEEDED REPLACED SINCE THIS STARTED.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

- VIN: KL1TD62654B
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: I AM ON A FIXED INCOME. I BOUGHT THIS CAR USED WITH 22,000 MILES ON IT WHICH I INTENDED TO TAKE CARE OF AND DRIVE FOR YEARS TO COME, IN FACT INTO THE GROUND. THE MANUAL I RECEIVED WITH THE CAR INDICATED THAT THE TIMING BELT SHOULD BE REPLACED AT 100,000. I LIVE IN A RURAL AREA WHERE YOU REALLY NEED A VEHICLE. I HAD DRIVEN TO ANOTHER TOWN FOR A MEDICAL APPOINTMENT. WHILE TRAVELING AT 55 MPH THE CAR JUST DIED IN HEAVY TRAFFIC IN A 55 MPH ZONE. I WAS LUCKY THAT A GOOD SAMARITAN HELPED ME OUT OF THE DANGEROUS CONDITION I WAS IN ON THE ROAD. MY VEHICLE HAD 65,321 MIIES ON IT. I HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED TO A DEALER. IT WAS DETERMINED THE TIMING BELT BROKE CAUSING VALVE DAMAGE. I WAS TOLD IT WOULD COST $5,000 TO REPAIR IT WHICH IS WHAT I PAID FOR THE VEHICLE. I DID NOT HAVING $5,000 SO I JUNKED THE CAR. THIS ORDEAL CAUSED SIGNIFICANT PROBLEMS FOR ME FINANCIALLY, EMOTIONALLY AND PHYSICALLY. I WAS 62 AT THE TIME. THE WEBSITE CARCOMPLAINTS HAS 56 SIMILAR COMPLAINTS RELATED TO 2004 CHEVY AVEOS. ALL OF THE TIMING BELTS FAILED BELOW 100,000 MILES. THERE ARE SIMILAR COMPLAINTS FOR THE 2005 CHEVY AVEO. WHY WASN'T I NOTIFIED ABOUT THIS PROBLEM SO I WOULD NOT LOSE MY SHORTS ON MY VEHICLE. I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED. THE EVENT WAS TERRIBLY FRIGHTENING. I SUFFER FROM HEART FAILURE. MY NEW CAR PAYMENT IS VERY HARD TO DEAL WITH ON A FIXED INCOME. I TOOK EXCELLENT CARE OF THE CAR. I SHOULD HAVE BEEN CONTACTED ABOUT SUCH DANGEROUS CONDITION. I WOULD LIKE SOME ANSWERS.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-01-13
- Crash: 1
- VIN: KL1TJ52664B

- Summary: THE VEHICLE WAS MOVING AT A HIGHWAY SPEED OF APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, WHEN IT GOT INTO A COLLISION WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE OTHER VEHICLE MADE AN ABRUPT STOP ON THE HIGHWAY IN FRONT OF THE 2004 CHEVROLET AVEO, WHICH CAUSED THE AVEO TO HIT THE BACK OF THE SUDDENLY STOPPED VEHICLE. UPON IMPACT, THE AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY, WHICH FROM MY UNDERSTANDING SHOULD HAPPEN WHEN TRAVELING AT THAT SPEED. IN FACT IT ESPECIALLY SHOULD HAVE DEPLOYED, DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE IMPACT DAMAGED THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. MY CONCERN IS THAT I HAVE BOUGHT TWO OTHER VEHICLES FROM THE SAME MANUFACTURER SINCE MY PURCHASE OF THIS VEHICLE. I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT MY FAMILY IS SAFE WHEN RIDING IN THESE VEHICLES.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-02-15
- Crash: 1
- VIN: KL1TD52684B
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: IN MID-FEBRUARY AFTER ONE OF OUR MANY BLIZZARDS, MY WIFE WAS DRIVING HER SEDAN HOME. THERE WAS A PILE OF SNOW ON OUR STREET THAT HAD HARDENED OVER. I GUESS SHE MISCALCULATED ITS HEIGHT (AND HARDNESS) AND WHEN SHE WENT OVER IT, THE CAR LURCHED UP AND SHE HEARD A LOUD GRINDING SOUND AGAINST THE UNDERCARRIAGE. THE ENGINE STARTED SHAKING IMMEDIATELY AND WITHIN SECONDS DIED. SHE CALLED ME OUT AND I TOOK A LOOK AT THE CAR. IT WAS DEAD. I WALKED OVER TO THE ICE AND IT WAS ROCK HARD, SO I TRIED TO TAKE A SHOVEL TO IT AND IMMEDIATELY EMAILED MY NEIGHBORS TO BE CAREFUL OF IT. I AM NOT MECHANICALLY-INCLINED, SO WHEN I GOOGLED WHAT MIGHT'VE HAPPENED, I SAW SEVERAL COMMENTS THAT IT COULD BE AS MINOR AS A DAMAGED OIL PAN THAT CAUSES THE ENGINE TO SHUT DOWN. FIGURING IT MIGHT BE SOMETHING MINOR, I CALLED AAA (HAD TO WAIT A FEW DAYS SINCE THEIR LINES WERE DOWN) AND HAD THE CAR TOWED DOWN THE STREET TO A SERVICE STATION. I WAS NOT EXPECTING THE ASSESSMENT FROM THE MECHANIC: APPARENTLY DURING THE COLLISION, THE TIMING BELT SLIPPED AND CAUSED THE PISTONS TO BEND. THIS WOULD COST SEVERAL THOUSAND TO FIX. UNFORTUNATELY, THIS CAR HAS AN "INTERFERENCE" DESIGN WHICH IS PRONE TO EXTENSIVE DAMAGE WHEN THIS HAPPENS. MANY AVEO OWNERS HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS ONLINE. THE WORST PART ABOUT ALL OF THIS IS THAT EVEN THOUGH IT HAPPENED DURING A COLLISION, OUR INSURANCE CHALKED THIS UP TO "WEAR AND TEAR" AND WE WERE FORCED TO JUNK THE CAR. OUR CAR HAD LESS THAN 60K MILES ON IT AND WE KEPT IT IN GOOD CONDITION. THIS SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED. THIS SHOULD HAVE EITHER BEEN HANDLED THROUGH A MANUFACTURER RECALL OR MY INSURANCE SHOULD HAVE TREATED IT AS THE COLLISION IT WAS AND COVERED IT.

HOWEVER, A FIRE ERUPTED NEAR THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE AS SMOKE FILLED THE VEHICLE CAUSING POOR VISIBILITY THAT IMPACTED THE CONTACT'S BREATHING. THE CONTACT AND THE DRIVER WERE ABLE TO QUICKLY EXIT THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO EXTINGUISH THE FLAMES WITH A FIRE EXTINGUISHER. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND WAS PARKED AT THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

Negative 2004 Chevrolet Aveo car reviews
Positive 2004 Chevrolet Aveo car reviews
-
Zippy, sleek, and excellent no-frills car that gets you from point A to point B. It's a lot of fun to drive, for sure!
-
This car is perfect for those on a tight budget, like myself. It has an attractive compact appearance with contemporary styling and is economical to operate. The practical 4-door sedan has adequate interior room for four full-size adults, even on extended trips. The 4-speed automatic shift makes for responsive performance when needed, but it is also good on gas mileage if not pushed hard continually.
-
It's really cool! The car's tires, windows, and everything are amazing. I love sitting in it all the time.
-
Affordable to purchase, maintain, and run. Great on long car trips (over 500mi) and very good looking for an economy car. Don't compare it to the expensive cars, but if you compare to others in its class (Toyota Echo, Pontiac Wave, Sunfire, Cavalier) this car outdoes them all for space and appearance. I test drove them all and still bought the Aveo. We all love it!
-
I was drawn to the exterior of the Aveo. As a 20-year-old, I was thrilled to be able to purchase a new car. I have taken it on the highway multiple times and have consistently achieved 40 miles per gallon. Additionally, my taller family members have appreciated the extra head and leg room provided by the Aveo. I encourage you to take a look at the Aveo before dismissing it. Thank you!

I own a 97 Geo Metro and my wife has the Aveo. At first, she loved it, but after a while, she noticed some instability during windy conditions due to the twist beam axle that was not apparent with the fully independent suspension in the Metro. Additionally, the build quality, not material quality, is greatly superior in the Metro. Overall, fuel economy is better with the three-speed auto in the Metro than with the four-speed O/D auto in the Aveo. I am not impressed with the Aveo and am now regretting it.
Ransom Reichel 2024-09-29
This car has been a disappointment. Despite owning it for less than six months, I have had to spend an average of $400 per month on maintenance. Unfortunately, I have had to replace three of the four wheel bearings, the transmission, and the engine. However, I am confident that I can find a better car that will meet my needs.

No major problems with this car till now. Unfortunately, while driving, the timing belt broke and blew the engine. The quotes I received for repairs range from £2800.00 to £3500.00, which is almost half the sticker price of £7750.00. I just paid off the car and I'm not feeling very happy about this situation. The more I read about the issues with this car, the more I think it might be time to consider getting a new one.

This car was purchased brand new as a gift. However, I was extremely disappointed when the timing belt broke and caused significant damage to the car, resulting in $5600 worth of repairs. Considering the initial cost of the car was only $9000 to $10000, this was a major setback. I strongly advise against purchasing this car, as it is likely to leave you stranded.

The car's fuel economy is significantly lower than advertised, and there have been issues with air conditioning performance, premature tire wear, and suspension clunks. Despite these concerns being noted by the dealer, they have not yet been resolved. Additionally, there is a grinding noise in the front which has been difficult to reproduce. As a confident solution, we will work with the dealer to address these issues and ensure that the car meets the high standards that we and our customers expect from Chevy. We value your loyalty and hope to restore your faith in our brand.
