2011 Dodge Avenger problems

dodge logo

The Dodge Avenger is a front-wheel drive, mid-sized sedan that was marketed by Dodge. The Avenger made its North American debut in 1994 for the 1995 model year as a coupe that was produced until 2000. The model name was reintroduced to the market as a four-door sports sedan starting in 2007 for the 2008 model year. The Dodge Avenger name had earlier been used on South African market Hillman Avengers in 1975 and 1976.

The 2014 model year marked the end of Avenger production as the mid-sized models for both the Dodge and Chrysler brands were consolidated into the new Chrysler 200 introduced for the 2015 model year while Dodge received the new compact Dart.

Nameplate history

The first use of the Dodge Avenger name was on a badge engineered version of the European Hillman Avenger, exclusive to South Africa. The same car was sold in North America as the Plymouth Cricket between 1972 and 1974. In place of the Hillman engines, this version used a Peugeot 1.6 litre engine (as also installed in locally assembled Peugeot 404s) in order to satisfy local content requirements. The Dodge-branded Avenger was introduced in 1975 and was then renamed Chrysler in 1976. This generation has nothing in common with later Dodge Avengers. After Chrysler ZA was merged into Sigma in 1976, the Avenger was soon cancelled to allow Sigma to free up more production capacity for the Mazda 323.

Common 2011 Dodge Avenger problems

The Dodge Avenger, produced from 1995 to 2014, has been a popular choice among car enthusiasts and everyday drivers due to its smooth ride quality and affordable price point. However, the Avenger has also been criticized for its performance, interior refinement, and reliability. When it comes to the 2011 Dodge Avenger, there are some common problems that owners have reported, primarily related to the car's faulty electrical system and air conditioning system.

Faulty Electrical System:
The 2011 Dodge Avenger has had numerous complaints about its faulty electrical system, which is a concern amplified by the vehicle's age. The most common issue reported is related to the Avenger's air conditioning system. Users have reported that the A/C and heating systems are not functioning as they should. Some have experienced a lack of heat on the left side of the car, while others have noted that the A/C system activates even when the controls are set to the off position. This can be particularly problematic for those living in areas with extreme heat or cold, as the unreliable A/C and heater systems may not provide adequate temperature control.

Engine-Related Woes:
In addition to the electrical issues, the 2011 Avenger is also no stranger to engine-related woes. While the specific causes and repair costs for these issues vary, they can range from faulty Totally Integrated Power Modules (TIPMs) to throttle bodies that need to be replaced. These problems can lead to the engine stalling while driving, which can be a significant safety risk, especially if the vehicle is on the highway.

Anti-Theft System Issues:
Another common problem with the 2011 Dodge Avenger is related to the anti-theft system. In some cases, the anti-theft system may prevent the vehicle from starting properly, which is said to be caused by electrostatic discharge and can affect the wireless control module. This issue can lead to wires short-circuiting, potentially causing engine fires.

While the 2011 Dodge Avenger is not as problematic as some other model years, it is essential to approach this year cautiously, especially when considering the car's age and potential electrical and engine-related issues. It is crucial to thoroughly research and inspect any used 2011 Dodge Avenger before purchasing to ensure that it is in good working condition and does not have any underlying issues that may become costly or dangerous in the future.

2011 Dodge Avenger recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2011 Dodge Avenger.

2016-09-15
  • Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US LLC)
  • Components: SEAT BELTS:PRETENSIONER
  • Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2011-2014 Chrysler 200, 2010 Chrysler Sebring, 2010-2012 Dodge Caliber and 2010-2014 Jeep Patriot, Compass and Dodge Avenger vehicles. The Occupant Restraint Control (OCR) module may short circuit, preventing the frontal air bags, seat belt pretensioners, and side air bags from deploying in the event of a crash.
  • Consequence: If the frontal air bags, seat belt pretensioners, and side air bags are disabled, there is an increased risk of injury to the vehicle occupants in the event of a vehicle crash that necessitates deployment of these safety systems.
  • Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the OCR, free of charge. Interim letters informing owners that parts are not available yet were mailed on October 26, 2016. The recall began on August 15, 2017. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S61.

Negative 2011 Dodge Avenger car reviews

  1. Jimmie Kautzer 2024-06-21

I recently purchased a new car and unfortunately experienced some issues. These included a klunking sound when shifting (Chrysler informed me that this is normal), a trunk that leaks when opened after rain (a factory default that cannot be fixed), stalling at a stop light (although nothing was found wrong), difficulty reaching to open the door when it is fully opened (a factory issue that cannot be resolved), a power steering issue that causes chirping sounds (although nothing was found wrong), and a sloshing sound when driving at low speeds (although nothing was found). While I am disappointed that these issues have occurred, I understand that sometimes things can go wrong. I am hopeful that the manufacturer will continue to work with me to resolve any future issues that may arise.

  2. Dalton Bosco 2024-06-16

I recently purchased a Chrysler Dodge vehicle and unfortunately feel misled. Despite purchasing the 2010 Avenger SXT model based on the 2009 booklet and showroom model, I discovered that it does not come with the standard options of the 2009 SXT. While the ride is quiet and the satellite radio is great, I was disappointed to find that it does not include a power seat, despite being told that it would have 'all the power'. As a result of this experience, I have decided not to purchase another Chrysler Dodge product in the future.

  3. Lew Macejkovic 2024-04-21

This car was definitely a learning experience. The dealership convinced me to buy a car that was overpriced and it has been a hassle to sell. It seems like every other month something falls apart. I'm excited to move on to a different brand than Dodge in the future.

  4. Rodolfo Ankunding 2024-03-28

I purchased my 2011 Dodge Avenger brand new with only 23 miles on it. Unfortunately, I have experienced some transmission issues since it hit 500 miles. The clunking and jerking can be quite scary at times. Despite having taken it to the shop 14 times and still not having it fixed, Dodge Corp. has told me that this is normal for all Dodges. However, I strongly disagree with this statement. This is my first and last Dodge car. The Dodge transmission mechanic informed me that the computer needs updates, which Dodge doesn't have. Last Tuesday, Beth at Dodge Corp. told me that it was a one-driver car, which I know is not true. It's very disappointing.

  5. Lemuel Okuneva 2024-03-12

After 2 years and finally trading it in, the Avenger just stopped being fun. With 35,000 miles on the clock, the engine and transmission seemed slower and the performance just got sucked out of it. Rust started corroding the rocker panels and the front bumper cover fell apart. There were some small interior faults such as tears in the steering wheel and seats from overuse. However, it's still a great car that just lost its luster for some reason.

Positive 2011 Dodge Avenger car reviews

  1. Stuart Beahan 2025-01-07

I absolutely love my Avenger! Despite Edmunds not being a fan due to its unique style, I have found it to be a reliable and enjoyable ride. With 180,000 miles on the clock, I have never had a single issue with it, even with my daily 120 mile commute. The sound system is fantastic and the uconnect feature is a real bonus. In my opinion, the Avenger is a hidden gem from Chrysler that was unfortunately overshadowed by the problems with the early Stratus and Sebring models from the late 90s and early 2000s. While the 2.4 4 cylinder engine may not be the most powerful, it is certainly adequate. Overall, this car has been an excellent value and one of my all-time favorites!

  2. Kurt Prosacco 2024-10-18

I bought this car for my son's 16th birthday. It's the Heat edition, which I believe is the performance version. Despite having 79,000 miles, it's in great shape. The exterior is attractive, resembling a mini Dodge Charger. The interior is also nice, with good quality materials and finish. It's not a Bentley, but it's definitely worth its cost and class. The car has many great features, including a moonroof and Bluetooth radio, and all the extras work well and are easy to use. With a V6 engine, it's strong and fun to drive (maybe a bit too much for a 16-year-old, but that's just my opinion). Most importantly, it has a lot of safety features, such as front-wheel drive, airbags, traction control, and antilock brakes. It was even an IIHS top safety pick in 2011, so I feel at ease with my soon-to-be licensed son driving it around.

The price and quality are pretty good!

This car sounds great for everyday driving, especially if you're covering long distances like 120 miles a day. The color scheme is Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl Coat External, Dark Slate Grey lower 1/2 with off white upper 1/2 interior, and the white LED interior lighting is a nice touch. In terms of drivability, you'll feel all 6 gears with slow starts in city driving, but with quick starts like the on ramp to interstates, you'll only feel 3 gears and then the 6th for overdrive. The car can definitely give you a thrill during rapid acceleration, but it won't throw you back into the seat like a V8 would. According to the traveler trip computer, you can expect around 28 MPG for the 120 mile trip.
