The Volkswagen Atlas is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured by the German automaker Volkswagen since 2017. Developed mainly for the North American and Chinese market, the vehicle is based on the Volkswagen Group MQB platform. Outside the US, Canadian, and Chilean markets, the vehicle is marketed as the Volkswagen Teramont. It is positioned above the long-wheelbase Tiguan and below the smaller but more upmarket Touareg.

Overview

Marketed as the Atlas in North America, Chile, and Israel, the vehicle is known as the Teramont elsewhere, including the rest of the Middle East Africa, as well as in Mexico, Russia, Colombia and China, where production in Ningbo began in 2017. For markets outside China, the Atlas/Teramont is produced in the Chattanooga plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States.

The vehicle features a transverse mounted four-cylinder or Volkswagen's VR6 engine. Up to the introduction of the China-only Viloran, the Atlas was the largest vehicle produced on the Volkswagen Group MQB platform.

Common 2024 Volkswagen Atlas cross sport problems

The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the most significant issues is a potential engine failure due to a connecting rod bearing problem, which could lead to catastrophic engine damage. This problem affects over 2,000 units of the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport, built before May 12, 2023. Contaminants in the bearing production process might cause increased wear on the bearing, resulting in premature failure and further catastrophic damage if ignored. If you own a 2024 Atlas or Atlas Cross Sport and have not received a recall notice, it is advisable to check the Volkswagen recall tool or the NHTSA recall tool to see if your car has any open recalls.

Another issue reported by owners is a strut rattle, which can be particularly problematic in the 2021 Cross Sport SE Premium model. This issue was initially dismissed by the dealership, but after persistent complaints, a part of the strut had to be replaced to fix the rattle. This problem highlights the importance of addressing any unusual noises or issues with your vehicle promptly, even if the dealership initially cannot find a problem.

In addition to the engine and strut problems, the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport has been reported to have issues with the crash avoidance system, which can engage in situations where it is not necessary, potentially causing accidents or damaging the vehicle's brakes. This issue was experienced by a consumer who had to fight with the service department to have the problem addressed, as they initially refused to believe that the anti-collision system could cause damage to the rotors.

Furthermore, some owners have reported electrical issues related to sensors, which may require multiple visits to the dealership to resolve. These issues can range from problems with door sensors to more complex electrical faults, which can be time-consuming and frustrating to diagnose and repair.

Lastly, the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport has been reported to have poor fuel efficiency, particularly considering its V6 engine. This issue may not be a safety concern, but it can impact the overall driving experience and cost of ownership.

In summary, the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport has several common problems reported by owners, including potential engine failure, strut rattles, issues with the crash avoidance system, electrical problems, and poor fuel efficiency. If you own a 2024 Atlas Cross Sport, it is essential to stay informed about any recalls or issues related to your vehicle and address them promptly to ensure your safety and satisfaction with your vehicle.

POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-05
  • VIN: 1V2AE2CAXRC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: To the best of my knowledge, the transmission failed to function appropriately causing danger. After pulling onto a major highway, the car stopped in front of oncoming traffic and the rpm’s shot up. After letting off the gas and pressing again, the car then shifted and was able to drive. This happened after several instances of delayed shifting noted but this is the first time it has stalled out while driving. Stalling on a major highway puts me and others at risk of crashing if I am unable to move my vehicle suddenly. No warning lamps were present then or now. According to my owners manual, I am to alert the NHTSA and Volkswagen. My next step is to reach out to Volkswagen.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-22
  • VIN: 1V2HE2CA7RC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Dear National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, I am writing to express my frustration with the ongoing issues with my Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport. Despite repeated repair efforts, the situation has become unsustainable. As a one-car household, visiting the dealership multiple times a month is both financially and personally stressful. While the service department has been excellent in trying to address the problems, the recurring issues are straining my relationship with the dealership. I need a reliable vehicle, especially given the $19,000 down payment we cannot afford to lose. We chose the SE model for ethical reasons (no leather), but it has been problematic, and we are now open to other solutions. Here is a list of issues we’ve encountered over the last 10 months: Atlas Number 1 (2 months): Loose exhaust shield Auto Start/Stop feature not functioning Start button unresponsive Rear windows would not close Infotainment system freezing Dashboard speaker grill falling off Rattle in rear door Atlas Number 2 (7 months): Front bumper damaged; required body shop repair Driver's window scratched and replaced Front parking sensors failed Windows malfunction and don’t auto close Infotainment system freezing; display going black Console cover broke twice Headlights repeatedly replaced, failing calibration Backup camera feed going black; needed replacement Headlight control module needed replacement Rattle in front door Dashboard speaker grill falling off Persistent front-end shake at highway speeds (tires rebalanced twice) Steering-responsive headlights fail to return to center, requiring a vehicle restart Recent repairs haven’t resolved these issues. The headlights still fail to center, the infotainment system continues to go black, and the backup camera still malfunctions. A software update is expected in January, but I need a solution in the meantime. Please help us resolve this situation—it's financially and practically unsustainable.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-28
  • VIN: 1V2AE2CA2RC
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Vehicle had multiple engine malfunction lights appear and start/stop failures. Vehicle failed to start properly and speed was limited to prevent damage engine. Happened while I was driving it and I had to pull over and had the vehicle towed. An authorized dealer, Auto Import Inc in Brainerd, MN has had the vehicle since July 29th. They are unable to diagnose the problem, want to send the vehicle elsewhere and VW quality technicians have not shown up to inspect the vehicle. I had noticed prior to the engine failure that my fuel economy was not going down with driving, but rather up, which made me suspicious. Stop and go City driving should not increase fuel economy in the manner which it was. I became nervous about fuel amounts. My last three fill ups were about 6 gallons only after driving 250 miles, equating to 40 mpg, which is way higher than any reported mpg estimate I have a customer care rep and case with VW. They are not helping me at all.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-26
  • VIN: 1V2FE2CA0RC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The VW Infotainment System is the main vehicle communication system. It includes the Navigation system, Vehicle Settings, Radio, and allows "hands-free" driving with cell phone connectivity via Bluetooth. Once the Radio module within the Infotainment system is turned ON.....it cannot be turned OFF. It does have Mute and Pause, however, any thing else that uses the audio immediately kicks the radio ON at various levels. For example, in heavy traffic where CONCENTRATION and DISTRACTION-FREE attention is needed, a text message to your phone or a Voice command from navigation will kick ON the Radio....non stop. When this happens, you must change out the Nav screen over to the Radio screen and pause or mute the radio to hear the voice commands and re-do the last instruction....while driving. I have had the VW Service Center at the dealership look at it several times...they cannot fix it. No one is able to turn the radio off. Only the ENTIRE Infotainment system (no hands-free The VW Customer Care says "you can turn the entire Infotainment system off" altogether and have NO functions/features available.

  • VIN: 1V2AE2CA3RC
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: On March 6, 2024 I received a crack in my windshield while driving that spans nearly the entire width across the windshield at driver's eye level. Volkswagen has informed me that there are zero replacement windshields for this vehicle available in the entire country. I have attempted to work with Volkswagen directly, the originating dealership directly and 3rd party safety glass retailers. There is no anticipated date that the manufacturer is going to make this windshield part available and the vehicle is unsafe to drive. This vehicle is brand new and it is unacceptable that the manufacturer is not required to manufacture and make available important safety components to service these vehicles while still selling the exact same vehicles as new.

Neither repair could be made by the dealership (invoice 491449) although they tried several times to adjust the door. Called VW warranty case #05862036. Negative 2024 Volkswagen Atlas cross sport car reviews

  1. Nickolas Feil 2024-11-11

That car has been in the garage many times. Four times for a board in the door that they did not find at first, and then a piston that took two days in the garage. When I was on my way to Florida, I did not receive any reimbursement for expensive hotels/meals. The car runs nicely above 30 miles speed, but below that, shifting is weird. I will never buy a VW again. The service was terrible, but riding it is okay, not great.

  2. Monserrate Kessler 2024-11-01

I'll skip the 'admiration' part of the vehicle description. We purchased our vehicle brand new from a dealership in Canada and it ran smoothly for the first 5,000 km. However, we've had a few issues since then. The media system has been malfunctioning, the plastic part over the driver's head rattles, the brakes are defective, the outside sensors are malfunctioning, and the outside mirror squeaks. Every time we bring these issues to the dealer's attention, they request that we 'replicate' the issue according to VW requirements, which has resulted in us spending hours in the dealership waiting room. Hopefully, they will improve their service in the future.

  3. Michael Hyatt 2024-10-01

The 2024 Atlas Cross Sport has unfortunately experienced several issues, including two replaced driving lights, a malfunctioning navigation system, and water intrusion through the driver's side door during rain. Despite eight warranty repairs, the car still lacks functional daytime driving lights and a working navigation system. Based on my experience, I would not recommend the 2024 Atlas Cross Sport.

  4. Chase O'Kon 2024-07-02

My wife and I decided to downsize to one vehicle to save money and reduce unnecessary driving. After considering several SUVs that would fit our lifestyle, we chose the VW Atlas Cross Sport. It's a beautiful and sturdy vehicle with a lovely interior that features V-Tex instead of leather, which I appreciate. While the infotainment system takes some time to learn, it's not overly complicated. However, we have experienced some issues with the car in the short time we've owned it. The passenger side rear window has trouble closing and there have been rattles in the exhaust shield and passenger's rear door. Additionally, the car has had trouble starting and restarting after the auto shut off engaged. While I've owned many cars over the years, this level of trouble is reminiscent of my 1997 VW Golf. In contrast, I've owned 7 Subarus since 2012 and they have all been reliable and trouble-free. It's unfortunate that I gave up such a dependable brand for this experience. I'm considering parting ways with the VW before it reaches 1000 miles and I doubt I'll purchase this brand again. It's a shame, but I value reliability and dependability in my vehicles.

  5. Vito Johns 2024-05-26

I recently purchased a 2024 VW Cross Sport on 22nd August 2023. Unfortunately, I encountered an error code on the first day while driving home from the dealership. Additionally, I noticed that the daytime running lights were not functioning properly and the driver's door was misaligned. Despite being out of service for 16 out of 19 days, the dealership has not been able to resolve the issue yet. The VW warranty requires me to take the car to a body shop for repairs, but unfortunately, the suggested body shops are over 400 miles away round trip with no compensation or loaner car while the body shops attempt to fix a new car. I have only driven the car for 364 miles. I would advise others to be cautious before purchasing a VW.

Positive 2024 Volkswagen Atlas cross sport car reviews

  1. Chadrick Osinski 2024-11-17

Completely satisfied! I love the stylish interior. The 4 CYL Turbo is very responsive.

  2. Micheal Feeney 2024-10-28

I'm really happy with my Cross Sport. As a single man, I wanted something larger for the long interstate driving I've been doing without going with a family-friendly 3-row vehicle that was designed to shuttle soccer teams. The Cross Sport gives me just the right amount of space and comfort.

  3. Gardner Steuber 2024-10-10

The Atlas Cross Sport has an AUDI platform. It drives like a dream!

  4. Dereck King 2024-09-24

    Superb!

  5. Maximilian Fahey 2024-09-24

It sounds like you had a great experience with this car! It has lots of room and drives like a car, which is great. It seems like the touch screen could be a little easier to navigate and the stereo knobs are rather small, but overall, you would recommend this vehicle. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
