Common Chrysler Pacifica problems

The Chrysler Pacifica is a popular minivan, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems that owners have reported. These issues range from electrical and engine problems to transmission and paint concerns.

One of the most reported problems with the Chrysler Pacifica is its faulty paint, which bubbles and prematurely peels off, exposing metal surfaces. This issue is particularly prevalent in the 2017 model year, and it can lead to rusting and further damage to the vehicle's exterior.

Another common problem with the Pacifica is its transmission. Cruise control defects, transmission problems, and carbon buildup are all issues that have been reported by owners.

The Chrysler Pacifica's electrical system has also been a source of frustration for some owners. Faulty touchscreens, malfunctioning cruise control, and electronic glitches have all been reported. These issues can affect the vehicle's safety and performance, making it difficult to use some of the Pacifica's features and functions.

In addition to these issues, the Chrysler Pacifica has also been known to have problems with its steering, suspension, and body/paint. Some owners have had to replace the nine-speed automatic gearbox, which can start to run jerky and dry before finally breaking down. The sliding doors can also open or close unexpectedly, which can be a safety concern.

Recalls have also been a problem for the Chrysler Pacifica. There are over twenty recalls for the Pacifica, with one affecting all model years (2017 to 2023) of the Pacifica hybrid. A wiring connector inside the transmission could short-circuit in some cases, resulting in a loss of power. The vast majority of recalls concern early-generation Pacifica models (2017 and 2018), hybrid or otherwise. These often affect only a small number of units, but they can still be a cause for concern for Pacifica owners.

In conclusion, while the Chrysler Pacifica is a popular and well-designed minivan, it has its share of common problems that owners have reported. These issues range from paint and transmission problems to electrical and safety concerns. It's worth noting that many of these issues have been reported in earlier model years, and that more recent models may have addressed some of these concerns. However, potential buyers should still be aware of these issues and do their due diligence before purchasing a Chrysler Pacifica.

  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Touring L with 3.6L engine. Odometer 78623 miles. Noted rough idling of engine for a few seconds when started. Later in day, at low speeds, check engine light came on solidly (no flashing) for a few seconds and then turned off. Early next morning took van to reputable local mechanic who has maintained the vehicle according to Chrysler recommendations. They pulled error code P0305 Cylinder misfire. • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-27
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
  • VIN: 2C4RC1N74NR
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The vehicle is equipped with multizone AC, and one day the REAR passenger AC system malfunctioned. This occurred during the heatwave period this summer. The AC would not turn off, after multiple attempts, neither through the infotainment screen nor the manual buttons. We tried all possible ways to turn it off and it would not. Furthermore, it was automatically set to high heat, and the temperature also could not be changed. It is available for inspection if needed. Our [XXX] child was the rear seat occupant at the time, and was on the verge of overheating. We took the vehicle to the dealership, explained the issue in detail, and also showed them the clear video evidence of the problem. Because the issue was intermittent, they did not inspect it nor repaired it because it was working fine in their possession. Manufacturer was also notified of the issue, and repeated the same dialogue as the dealer, which is, that they can not resolve it if they can not reproduce it. There were no warning codes, lights, or messages for this issue. After receiving the vehicle back from the dealer, unrepaired, the problem happened again the same day. It is now back at another dealer hoping to be repaired and the issue diagnosed/reproduced. This is making us very nervous if it happens again, during a freeway drive or a long road trip, our road safety and children's health is at risk. The dealership and manufacturer have not demonstrated urgency for this matter, and treat it as any other "intermittent" issue. They advised us to bring it back if it occurs again. Should we really be testing these diagnostics on the road with our children's safety or comfort at stake? Thank you for giving us the opportunity to bring this matter to your attention. It was flashing "Service Hybrid Battery System", "Service Transmission", "Turn off parking brake" and the Vehicle began to power cycle on and off, then on with gas motor, then on with electric motor. The vehicle could not be powered off and it could not be shifted out of gear and the parking brake could not be disengaged. The tow truck had to drag our Pacifica onto the flatbed while it continued to turn on and off and cycle through the engine and hybrid system. This vehicle has 36,000 miles and just had the transmission replaced under the "Recall for hybrid transmission systems" This is the second time this has happened, it originally occurred at 7000 miles and after the dealer had it for a week we were told there was no problem. The dealer had to pull a bunch of fuses and the 12v battery to get the vehicle to stop turning off and on, the same thing happened this time when it was dragged off the flatbed at the dealer.

I am unable to park my car by my house due to the fire risk, which has required me to buy monthly parking passes. I am unable to charge my car, which has caused increased gas costs. I previously paid to install a level 2 charger in my home, which I am unable to use. Additionally a concerning electrical noise has started to occur when starting the car or long after turning the car off. I am continually anxious about driving this car with my children, but I have no other choice to continually put all of us at risk. Latest negative Chrysler Pacifica car reviews

  1. Maximus Marks 2025-06-20

    Vehicle year: 2020

The transmission on the Pacifica has been giving me some trouble. It shifts really hard and it's been happening since it was new. Additionally, I've been experiencing some issues with the electrical system and the automatic doors not closing correctly. Unfortunately, this will be my first and last Chrysler.

  2. Hassan Oberbrunner 2025-06-10

    Vehicle year: 2007

The interior is really nice. Although the 4.0L engine is powerful, it may be a little too much for some. Unfortunately, these cars have a few issues such as the transmission shifting hard, and the motor and transmission mounts going bad. The aftermarket ones don't last, so you have to buy them from a Chrysler dealer for around $200 each list price. Additionally, the EGR valve goes out on these cars, and the front control arm bushings and front sway bar bushings wear out and cause clunking in the front end. Around 150,000 miles, the radiator and A/C condenser failed. Despite these issues, we still liked the car, but it does require quite a few repairs.

  3. Perry Kihn 2025-06-08

    Vehicle year: 2019

When considering which car to buy, it's important to prioritize reliability, transmission performance, seat comfort for all passengers, and resale value. While I wasn't initially drawn to the Honda's looks, I ultimately decided to purchase one and have been happy with my decision. The Chrysler model has many impressive features, but after three years on the market, it's disappointing that they haven't resolved some of the issues. I experienced problems with both batteries, which left me stranded three times in one week. Although I was able to jumpstart the car myself, I found the electrical system to be dangerous. In addition to the main battery, an auxiliary battery is required to power the onboard entertainment features. Imagine being stuck in a hot parking lot with a car full of groceries and unable to start the car due to a transmission gear selector issue. It's frustrating to be stranded in a car with no air conditioning and no way to turn it off. Dealing with Chrysler's Roadside Assistance was also a hassle, and I ended up paying $100 for a tow and a warranty battery replacement. Overall, I was disappointed with the low level of customer service. While the transmission can be annoying at times, there are still many great features to appreciate in this car.Cruise control may not always maintain speed, which could potentially lead to issues if the driver is not paying attention. It seems that Chrysler has faced similar criticisms in the past, particularly in the late 90s, for producing stylish cars that perform well initially but do not hold up over time. If Fiat shares this approach, it may not bode well for the longevity of the Chrysler brand. While I had hoped for a better experience, it seems like more of the same. Perhaps a Honda would be a better choice.

  4. Rasheed Stokes 2025-06-07

    Vehicle year: 2020

This is my second Chrysler Pacifica. My previous one was a 2017, and my current one is a 2020. I really like this vehicle, which is why I bought two of them. However, I am disappointed with the clunky transmission. I was hoping that they would have corrected this issue after three years of production, but unfortunately, it still persists. Despite this, I plan to keep the vehicle for two more years, but I will be mindful of the transmission. It's a shame that they haven't been able to fix this issue because the vehicle is excellent in every other way.

  5. Jace Leannon 2025-06-06

    Vehicle year: 2005

I had a bad experience with a used Pacifica that I bought with 132k miles on it. Unfortunately, I encountered many of the common problems that are known to occur with this model. Within four months of owning it, the AC, windows, and radio all stopped working, which was especially difficult to deal with in the Florida heat. After some research, I discovered that it was a bad ground wire causing the issue. Shortly after that, the car got stuck in park, but I was able to fix it myself with the help of a YouTube video. However, the engine blew up only three weeks later, which was very disappointing. Based on my experience, I have decided not to buy another Chrysler vehicle. I would advise my friends to avoid them as well.

    Vehicle year: 2020

Your sister made a great choice with this vehicle! The stow and go seats are a fantastic feature. Do you happen to know if it's FWD or AWD? It's not a hybrid, but she's still very happy with the gas version.

  2. Deon Kozey 2025-06-18

    Vehicle year: 2004

I bought my car with 25,000 miles on it and now it has 66,000 miles. Surprisingly, I still have the original brakes and my local mechanic thinks they will last for another 10,000 miles. Although I have had some repeated issues with the suspension, I am grateful that I purchased an extended warranty (6 years/100,000 miles) through my credit union with no deductible. The only additional cost I have incurred, aside from routine maintenance, was the Wisconsin tax on the bill. I did have to replace the tires at 45,000 miles.

I really enjoyed my Used 2004 Pacifica. As a mother of two, it has been a great car with its comfortable interior and DVD player. I owned it for 2 years and overall, it was a great experience. The only issue I had was that it bottomed out a few times on the front end. However, the crash rates were amazing. I was once hit head-on with my 2 kids in the car and although my car was totaled, we walked out with just a few bumps. I absolutely loved my Pacifica and would definitely buy one again!

We have very large dogs and need a lot of open floor space, easy entry, and easy maintenance interior. We test drove many vehicles that could fold flat or nearly flat the 2nd and 3rd row seats. However, some of the vehicles were not practical as the Himalayan climb into them when the seats are down is not reasonable. Other vehicles leave big gaps when the seats are down. The Pacifica was the most logical choice for us. It handles well, provides a comfortable ride, and has every technology feature we would have gotten in a Volvo, Toyota, Benz or GMC at a fraction of the price. The stow and go seats are the number 1 selling feature, and the floor lays low and flat with seats stowed. The 3rd row can stay up and you still have a trunk, providing tons of space. The leather heated power seats and steering wheel, giant power moonroof, and 28 MPG make it an excellent choice. We keep our vehicles for up to 10 years, and while I have no doubt the resale won't hold up as well as some of our other vehicles based on what I saw for used Pacificas, I didn't pay as much up front either. Fingers crossed it is the gem it should be. I might actually be able to survive the minivan stigma.

This is definitely the best van I have ever owned! I went for the fully-loaded Limited version, which is a bit pricey, but worth every penny. I have owned a 2016 Odyssey, a Chrysler TC, and a Kia Sedona in the past. In terms of driving, the Pacifica handles very well. The Advanced Safety Tec is a great feature, and the lane departure settings are helpful without being obnoxious. The adaptive cruise is also very useful. The only downside is that the park assist can be a bit annoying, as it sometimes beeps unnecessarily. However, you can easily turn it off with the push of a button. I was a bit disappointed that the van does not have a blind spot camera that activates when changing lanes, but the lights on the side view mirrors are helpful. I had to drive the van back from a 120 mile trip through a snow storm, and it handled very well. While driving in the white-out conditions, I wished it had AWD, but unfortunately, the Sienna is still the only van with that feature. The snow covered the external sensors and the lane markers on the road, so the lane departure and adaptive cruise could not function. A heating system for the sensors might be a good idea to deal with these issues. The rear backup camera is a bit low res, which is surprising given the premium price tag. The ride is fairly quiet, but I expected it to be quieter given how Chrysler touts the noise dampening features. The unconventional gear shift knob is fine, but it stresses my wife out because she’s afraid that she might absentmindedly shift the car to park when trying to adjust the radio volume. The interior is very comfortable with lots of storage throughout. I love that the Pacifica has a space in front of the console big enough to accommodate a spare tire or my wife's purse (but just barely). The three-panel glass roof is fantastic and gives the already spacious van a very open feel. I love how I can shift the second-row seats up with car seats in place to allow easier access, especially for adults, to the third row. A word of caution to parents like me: don't try to shift the second-row seat while your toddler is seated, or you might meet the business end of the aforementioned massive purse. It's great that the third-row passengers have controls to recline the seats, but it would be even better if both sides of the third row had USB charging ports. I'm not one to advocate for kids to have their faces in screens, but I'm even more opposed to hearing my kid complain about how it's not fair that his sister can charge her device while he can't. Also, if you have the vacuum, that side of the third row has no cup holder (the other side has two). Basically, the third-row passenger sitting on the driver's side gets the short end of the stick. I love being able to kick under the sliding doors and tailgate to open them when my hands are full, but unfortunately, you can't kick to close when you're unloading your cargo/toddler. The second-row stow is the one thing I'm glad was carried over from the earlier Chrysler vans. I love using the compartments for extra storage when taking long road trips so the main cabin is less cluttered. The lack of this feature made the hybrid version a non-starter for me. Tech-wise, the nav system is okay if you've never used one, but the nav screen looks ten years old. I've always opted out of getting nav when I had a choice because I assumed it would be inferior to Google Maps or Waze on my phone. The Pacifica's nav only confirmed that practice. Otherwise, the UConnect Infotainment system is very good. It's fairly intuitive and takes a few minutes of playing around to figure out how to control everything. It would be nice if the theater allowed you to play two different DVDs on the two screens, but that's not too big a deal.I really enjoy being able to play movies from a USB drive that plugs into a port next to the DVD player. It's great that you can play different movies on the two screens from the same USB. Although it seems that mp4 format is not supported, avi files play just fine. I was even able to watch streaming content using my Roku mini (both screens have a USB for charging and HDMI ports) by tethering to my phone. I believe you can pay extra to have the van itself serve as a wireless hotspot, but it's only 3G. I ordered an HDMI lightning cable for my iPhone and I'm excited to see if I can mirror to the second row screens. In conclusion, while I may have pointed out some deficiencies in the Pacifica, I am extremely pleased with it and have no regrets (so far). I got this van to do more road trips with my family and I am certain that we will travel in more comfort and have more fun than in any other minivan on the market.
