Common Chrysler Pacifica problems

The Chrysler Pacifica is a popular minivan, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems that owners have reported. These issues range from electrical and engine problems to transmission and paint concerns.

One of the most reported problems with the Chrysler Pacifica is its faulty paint, which bubbles and prematurely peels off, exposing metal surfaces. This issue is particularly prevalent in the 2017 model year, and it can lead to rusting and further damage to the vehicle's exterior.

Another common problem with the Pacifica is its transmission. Cruise control defects, transmission problems, and carbon buildup are all issues that have been reported by owners.

The Chrysler Pacifica's electrical system has also been a source of frustration for some owners. Faulty touchscreens, malfunctioning cruise control, and electronic glitches have all been reported. These issues can affect the vehicle's safety and performance, making it difficult to use some of the Pacifica's features and functions.

In addition to these issues, the Chrysler Pacifica has also been known to have problems with its steering, suspension, and body/paint. Some owners have had to replace the nine-speed automatic gearbox, which can start to run jerky and dry before finally breaking down. The sliding doors can also open or close unexpectedly, which can be a safety concern.

Recalls have also been a problem for the Chrysler Pacifica. There are over twenty recalls for the Pacifica, with one affecting all model years (2017 to 2023) of the Pacifica hybrid. A wiring connector inside the transmission could short-circuit in some cases, resulting in a loss of power. The vast majority of recalls concern early-generation Pacifica models (2017 and 2018), hybrid or otherwise. These often affect only a small number of units, but they can still be a cause for concern for Pacifica owners.

In conclusion, while the Chrysler Pacifica is a popular and well-designed minivan, it has its share of common problems that owners have reported. These issues range from paint and transmission problems to electrical and safety concerns. It's worth noting that many of these issues have been reported in earlier model years, and that more recent models may have addressed some of these concerns. However, potential buyers should still be aware of these issues and do their due diligence before purchasing a Chrysler Pacifica.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-27
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
  • VIN: 2C4RC1N74NR
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The vehicle is equipped with multizone AC, and one day the REAR passenger AC system malfunctioned. This occurred during the heatwave period this summer. The AC would not turn off, after multiple attempts, neither through the infotainment screen nor the manual buttons. We tried all possible ways to turn it off and it would not. Furthermore, it was automatically set to high heat, and the temperature also could not be changed. It is available for inspection if needed. Our [XXX] child was the rear seat occupant at the time, and was on the verge of overheating. We took the vehicle to the dealership, explained the issue in detail, and also showed them the clear video evidence of the problem. Because the issue was intermittent, they did not inspect it nor repaired it because it was working fine in their possession. Manufacturer was also notified of the issue, and repeated the same dialogue as the dealer, which is, that they can not resolve it if they can not reproduce it. There were no warning codes, lights, or messages for this issue. After receiving the vehicle back from the dealer, unrepaired, the problem happened again the same day. It is now back at another dealer hoping to be repaired and the issue diagnosed/reproduced. This is making us very nervous if it happens again, during a freeway drive or a long road trip, our road safety and children's health is at risk. The dealership and manufacturer have not demonstrated urgency for this matter, and treat it as any other "intermittent" issue. They advised us to bring it back if it occurs again. Should we really be testing these diagnostics on the road with our children's safety or comfort at stake? Thank you for giving us the opportunity to bring this matter to your attention. She was shifting from Park to Drive just after our children got out of the vehicle in the school parking lot when the whole vehicle froze up and the dashboard lite up with all error lights including the engine light. It was flashing "Service Hybrid Battery System", "Service Transmission", "Turn off parking brake" and the Vehicle began to power cycle on and off, then on with gas motor, then on with electric motor. The vehicle could not be powered off and it could not be shifted out of gear and the parking brake could not be disengaged. The tow truck had to drag our Pacifica onto the flatbed while it continued to turn on and off and cycle through the engine and hybrid system. This vehicle has 36,000 miles and just had the transmission replaced under the "Recall for hybrid transmission systems" This is the second time this has happened, it originally occurred at 7000 miles and after the dealer had it for a week we were told there was no problem. The dealer had to pull a bunch of fuses and the 12v battery to get the vehicle to stop turning off and on, the same thing happened this time when it was dragged off the flatbed at the dealer.

I am unable to park my car by my house due to the fire risk, which has required me to buy monthly parking passes. I am unable to charge my car, which has caused increased gas costs. I previously paid to install a level 2 charger in my home, which I am unable to use. Additionally a concerning electrical noise has started to occur when starting the car or long after turning the car off. I am continually anxious about driving this car with my children, but I have no other choice to continually put all of us at risk. Latest negative Chrysler Pacifica car reviews

  1. Chad Johnson 2025-04-16

    Vehicle year: 2021

I have been a proud owner of a 2021 Chrysler Pacifica (Plug-in Hybrid Limited) for almost a year now. The Pacifica is a great concept and when it works, it is excellent. The plug-in feature is perfect for our family, allowing us to go 2-3 months without needing gas. Long road trips are a breeze with no range anxiety or needing to plan around charging stations. The car is incredibly quiet inside, and you can easily talk from the driver seat to the third row at a normal voice. The minivan is comfortable, even with a dark color in the Texas summer, thanks to the cooled seats, window shades, and other features. The number of charging ports is great for long car trips, as is the on-board wifi. The wireless Apple CarPlay is a game-changer in convenience compared with older models that require plugging in via USB, especially that you can connect on multiple phones. Overall, the Pacifica is a great car that offers a lot of features that make it perfect for families. However, I have experienced some issues with the car, including 5 warranty issues already. The car has stopped working and needed to be towed in the middle of the street due to a battery/charging issue. The window shades were installed backwards in one part of my car and multiple dealers still have not replaced/fixed them. The car has screens in the backseat that might as well not even be there. The system that the screen uses is extremely old and hard to use. Multiple times it just stops working -- we've had to take it to the dealer to fix. The only thing it seems to be able to reliably do is play DVDs. There is no ability to stream from your phone or anything.I've been having trouble getting a Google Chromecast to work on the HDMI port, but even if I did, it would be very cumbersome as it would get in the way every time I got in and out of the minivan. Unfortunately, my minivan has stopped being able to be charged again recently. I've become very familiar with the 'Service Charging System' error, and if you Google that phrase, you'll see that many others have dealt with it too. Before I bought the car, some people warned me that there could be issues with the hybrid/battery/charging system since it was not a mature technology. I thought, 'hey, it's covered by a long warranty, I should be okay.' However, I have now found out why that is flawed thinking. Every time I have to bring in my minivan because of an issue with the battery/charging system, I have to go without it for weeks. Unfortunately, the dealerships I have gone to do not have enough people who can work on hybrids, so it takes at least a week for them to even look at the issue, much less resolve it. This means that in my first year of owning a Pacifica, I have gone about 4-5 weeks without my minivan, and I am currently without it right now with no end in sight. As a family of 5, it is very difficult to manage without our family car to take the kids to school, soccer practice, etc. The whole point of buying a Pacifica is to have a minivan to drive around my family comfortably with car seats and all. Unfortunately, the dealerships say they can't offer me a service car of any sort. So basically, 10% of the time I have owned my minivan, it has been sitting at a dealership, and we have been down a car at my house. By the way, I live in Houston, the 4th largest city in the US, so it's surprising that I can't find a dealership that can even look at the issues in my car within a week.I have always owned Hondas for the family car and never had any warranty issues. When we eventually needed service, it was promptly provided. However, my recent experience with my Chrysler has been terribly frustrating and has me considering selling it and getting something else. I am disappointed and unlikely to purchase another Chrysler in the future. It's a shame because when the minivan works correctly, it is a true joy to own. However, a car that costs $60,000 should have better than 90% availability.

Hi there! We're sorry to hear that you've experienced some trouble with your car's transmission. We understand how frustrating that can be. Could you please provide us with more details about the issue? We'd be happy to help you resolve it as soon as possible. Thank you!

  3. Janick Armstrong 2025-04-08

    Vehicle year: 2023

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2023 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. Unfortunately, it has been at the dealer's service department for about four weeks out of the four months since I received it. The latest issue is a red warning light that says 'Hybrid Electrical Service Required'. The dealer has informed me that it needs a new transmission, but those are currently backordered indefinitely. I was wondering if anyone knows if those transmissions are even being produced? I'm a bit disappointed that the dealer doesn't provide loaners or rentals, and Chrysler Cares won't reimburse rentals until the service is completed. However, the dealer has not provided an ETA on when the transmission will arrive, so there is no estimate on when the service will be completed. As a result, I'm currently without a car or rental, and I'm feeling a bit frustrated. Thank you for listening to my experience.

  4. Elias Streich 2025-04-06

This minivan has unfortunately experienced several issues since purchase, including two necessary tows due to hybrid battery issues and two recalls related to fire risk. The latest recall is still awaiting a fix from Chrysler and as a precaution, we are currently unable to plug in or park the vehicle near buildings or other cars. Despite these challenges, we remain confident in Chrysler's ability to address these concerns and provide a safe and reliable vehicle. Thank you for your understanding.

I really enjoyed our car when we first bought it, but unfortunately we have been experiencing some oil consumption problems that others have also mentioned. It's concerning that at only 3000 miles, the oil is completely gone. Although the dealer replaced the top half of the engine, the issue still persists. According to Chrysler, this level of oil consumption is normal, but it seems strange that they have no idea where the oil is going. I used to own a 96' Jeep Cherokee that had 380,000 miles and never burned an ounce of oil, so it's disappointing that Chrysler is not taking responsibility for this issue. Additionally, at 3,000 miles the engine starts to click. As much as I used to love Chrysler vehicles, I don't think I will be buying another one in the future.

19th Month update, my car now has 18,700 miles and the due service light just came on for the 2nd service. I am happy to report that, despite the complex and many complicated electronics in this car, being a first of a new model and built very early in their release, I have had NO issues whatsoever. I have only gone to the dealer for the first oil change and it was at no charge. I am extremely pleased with the quality of this car and its many features. It is especially convenient to be able to quickly lower all seats and have basically a cargo van that will hold 4 x 8 sheets of plywood. I must say that I am very impressed with the AC, it cools extremely fast. In the 13 months that I have owned this car and driven 13,700 miles, I have only had to take it to the dealer once for routine service, which was cost-free. As a Limited with every electronic and an early build of a new model, I had thought I would have some issues but NONE! I found this to be a considerable upgrade from my Mercedes GL450. The Chrysler is quieter, rides better, designed better, and the front seats are more comfortable with more legroom than the MB. One minor gripe is that the wheel tilts but does not telescope. I am tall and like the seat all the way back, and would like to bring the steering wheel back towards me. However, this is a minor issue. I bought the limited with every option and was very pleasantly surprised by the gas mileage. I usually drive at 79 mph on the Interstate and the highway mileage was just under 28mpg. The dash and electronics are laid out very well, almost like a full tablet. However, be careful of distraction. I am most impressed by the radar cruise control. I have had it on other cars but it was too abrupt and I would not use it. Chrysler nailed it on this car. I now use it almost every time I drive, even in town. It works great in heavy stop and go traffic and you do not have to touch the brake or gas from 70 to zero and back to 70.The car has three settings, but I have only used medium and it works perfectly for me. It stops and starts smoothly and maintains just the right distance from the car in front of you. Unlike other cars, it does not sense the car next to you and make adjustments in error. It also works well in the fast lane on the interstate, as the speed often fluctuates +/- 10mph and you cannot use normal cruise control. The car pegs it and made my long trips far less tiring. Everyone in the second row loves the rear touch screen tablets. We were driving in 100-degree heat and the car kept very cool very easily. The rear has pull-down shades in addition to deep tint. Another safety feature on the car is lane assist. It will physically keep you in your lane in medium or high setting, but senses if you take your hands off the wheel. I assume they do not want one using it with radar cruise as the car would be driving itself. I prefer the low or light setting, so I get a gentle nudge if drifting out of my lane. Even with the active system off, the blind spot warning with a light on your mirror and an audible warning alerts you of a car in your blind spot, and the lane assist nudges you to stay in your lane. Another feature that impressed me was the camera system. You have the standard backup camera that can be switched into a 180-degree mode where you can see cars or people approaching from the side when backing. It also has a front camera, but what really impressed me was the 360-degree camera that gives you the view that you would see from a satellite looking down at your car. It is some type of virtual reality and even shows the color of the cars around you. This car has the automatic parking system for both parallel parking and backing into a parking spot. Both work well. I have the upgraded stereo with 19 speakers, and you could not get better sound. Having all seats fold into the floor is a great feature. The Chrysler Limited model comes with a fantastic sunroof that covers almost the entire roof of the car. Although I personally do not use it as it adds heat, it is a great feature for those who enjoy the sunshine. Additionally, the car has roof rails that can be folded into the roof when not needed, making it more air efficient and sleeker. The car also comes with 3 high-tech keys that can be set for different drivers, allowing for a more personalized driving experience. The navigation system is the best I have ever owned, and with the satellite radio, it comes with live traffic updates and live weather radar, as well as a variety of apps that can be accessed from the car. The car also has a vacuum, which is a great feature, and although it means giving up the compact spare, I personally find it to be worthless anyway. This car is designed for road trips, and I have already purchased a matching full-size spare for when I go out of town. If I have a flat tire, I want to be able to change it and continue my trip, rather than being forced to try and find a matching tire. If the spare takes up too much space, a streamlined Thule cargo box for the roof is a great solution. Overall, I believe this is the best car I have ever owned, and as a car enthusiast, I can confidently say that Chrysler hit a grand slam with this car. After a year and three long trips, it has proven to be a flawless car so far.

Great job on creating something a little different! It's clear that this car was produced after the merger, and the interior materials and design are much better than anything Chrysler produced prior. The engine is adequate, but it would be even better if the car didn't weigh so much, which would also improve gas mileage. The experience making minivans shows in the attention to details inside. I really appreciate the fact that the seats fold flat without the console in the middle of the 2nd row getting in the way. So far, mine has been solid. I am curious to see how all the electronics (nav system, tire pressure monitor, EVIC system, etc.) will hold up over time. Overall, this was a solid effort!

It sounds like you really loved your car! Over the course of 4 years and almost 130000 miles, you had only one major issue - a motor exodus at 75000 miles. Unfortunately, Chrysler was not able to provide any assistance and quoted a replacement engine cost of around $6500. However, you were able to find a used engine from a scrap metal dealer and had a local shop install it. I'm glad to hear that you were able to get your car back up and running again!

The Pacifica is not a car, SUV, or minivan. If anything, it leans more towards a luxury SUV. I love it!

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my 06 Pacifica that recently hit 100k miles. I must say, it's been a dream to drive with no issues at all. I was a bit worried about the ride being rough and having blind spots, but it's been quite the opposite - a dream! One thing that really stands out to me is the amount of space it has. As someone who is 6'1 with long legs, it's always been a struggle for me to find a car that's comfortable, but this one definitely fits the bill. I'm even excited to fill it up with kids of my own for the 4 seats in the back! The only minor issue I've noticed is that there isn't much storage space within arm's reach, but I'm used to storing things in different places while driving. It's not the best on gas, but I'm coming from driving cars for over 10 years, so it's expected. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend it to others!
