Common Chrysler Pacifica problems

The Chrysler Pacifica is a popular minivan, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems that owners have reported. These issues range from electrical and engine problems to transmission and paint concerns.

One of the most reported problems with the Chrysler Pacifica is its faulty paint, which bubbles and prematurely peels off, exposing metal surfaces. This issue is particularly prevalent in the 2017 model year, and it can lead to rusting and further damage to the vehicle's exterior.

Another common problem with the Pacifica is its transmission. Cruise control defects, transmission problems, and carbon buildup are all issues that have been reported by owners.

The Chrysler Pacifica's electrical system has also been a source of frustration for some owners. Faulty touchscreens, malfunctioning cruise control, and electronic glitches have all been reported. These issues can affect the vehicle's safety and performance, making it difficult to use some of the Pacifica's features and functions.

In addition to these issues, the Chrysler Pacifica has also been known to have problems with its steering, suspension, and body/paint. Some owners have had to replace the nine-speed automatic gearbox, which can start to run jerky and dry before finally breaking down. The sliding doors can also open or close unexpectedly, which can be a safety concern.

Recalls have also been a problem for the Chrysler Pacifica. There are over twenty recalls for the Pacifica, with one affecting all model years (2017 to 2023) of the Pacifica hybrid. A wiring connector inside the transmission could short-circuit in some cases, resulting in a loss of power. The vast majority of recalls concern early-generation Pacifica models (2017 and 2018), hybrid or otherwise. These often affect only a small number of units, but they can still be a cause for concern for Pacifica owners.

In conclusion, while the Chrysler Pacifica is a popular and well-designed minivan, it has its share of common problems that owners have reported. These issues range from paint and transmission problems to electrical and safety concerns. It's worth noting that many of these issues have been reported in earlier model years, and that more recent models may have addressed some of these concerns. However, potential buyers should still be aware of these issues and do their due diligence before purchasing a Chrysler Pacifica.

  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Touring L with 3.6L engine. Odometer 78623 miles. Noted rough idling of engine for a few seconds when started. Later in day, at low speeds, check engine light came on solidly (no flashing) for a few seconds and then turned off. Early next morning took van to reputable local mechanic who has maintained the vehicle according to Chrysler recommendations. They pulled error code P0305 Cylinder misfire. • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-27
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
  • VIN: 2C4RC1N74NR
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The vehicle is equipped with multizone AC, and one day the REAR passenger AC system malfunctioned. This occurred during the heatwave period this summer. The AC would not turn off, after multiple attempts, neither through the infotainment screen nor the manual buttons. We tried all possible ways to turn it off and it would not. Furthermore, it was automatically set to high heat, and the temperature also could not be changed. It is available for inspection if needed. Our [XXX] child was the rear seat occupant at the time, and was on the verge of overheating. We took the vehicle to the dealership, explained the issue in detail, and also showed them the clear video evidence of the problem. Because the issue was intermittent, they did not inspect it nor repaired it because it was working fine in their possession. Manufacturer was also notified of the issue, and repeated the same dialogue as the dealer, which is, that they can not resolve it if they can not reproduce it. There were no warning codes, lights, or messages for this issue. After receiving the vehicle back from the dealer, unrepaired, the problem happened again the same day. It is now back at another dealer hoping to be repaired and the issue diagnosed/reproduced. This is making us very nervous if it happens again, during a freeway drive or a long road trip, our road safety and children's health is at risk. The dealership and manufacturer have not demonstrated urgency for this matter, and treat it as any other "intermittent" issue. They advised us to bring it back if it occurs again. Should we really be testing these diagnostics on the road with our children's safety or comfort at stake? Thank you for giving us the opportunity to bring this matter to your attention. She was shifting from Park to Drive just after our children got out of the vehicle in the school parking lot when the whole vehicle froze up and the dashboard lite up with all error lights including the engine light. It was flashing "Service Hybrid Battery System", "Service Transmission", "Turn off parking brake" and the Vehicle began to power cycle on and off, then on with gas motor, then on with electric motor. The vehicle could not be powered off and it could not be shifted out of gear and the parking brake could not be disengaged. The tow truck had to drag our Pacifica onto the flatbed while it continued to turn on and off and cycle through the engine and hybrid system. This vehicle has 36,000 miles and just had the transmission replaced under the "Recall for hybrid transmission systems" This is the second time this has happened, it originally occurred at 7000 miles and after the dealer had it for a week we were told there was no problem. The dealer had to pull a bunch of fuses and the 12v battery to get the vehicle to stop turning off and on, the same thing happened this time when it was dragged off the flatbed at the dealer.

I am unable to park my car by my house due to the fire risk, which has required me to buy monthly parking passes. I am unable to charge my car, which has caused increased gas costs. I previously paid to install a level 2 charger in my home, which I am unable to use. Additionally a concerning electrical noise has started to occur when starting the car or long after turning the car off. I am continually anxious about driving this car with my children, but I have no other choice to continually put all of us at risk. Latest negative Chrysler Pacifica car reviews

  1. Colten Ortiz 2025-07-11

    Vehicle year: 2023

This rental car is pretty good to drive, with a comfortable front seat, although the second row is a bit cramped. We recently took a trip using phone navigation, but unfortunately the connectivity wasn't great. We experienced errors when the cable moved and the Bluetooth wasn't very reliable either. When we tried to connect two phones, the screen froze up and we couldn't fix it even after disconnecting the phones. We even tried changing the cables, but the freeze ups continued. Navigating through a large, fast-paced city became a bit of a nightmare.

  2. Winston Jerde 2025-07-10

    Vehicle year: 2023

I really wanted to love my minivan because of its great features and look. However, I have had a lot of issues with it and I am disappointed with Chrysler. Unfortunately, we were not informed about the battery recall and I only found out about it online. Even though we had the car in the dealership several times, no one mentioned the recall. It was frustrating to have a hybrid car that we couldn't use as intended because of the recall. We have also had issues with the gas tank sensor for the last ten months, and despite several attempts to fix it, it is still broken. The gas tank button doesn't work either. It has been a difficult experience, but I am hopeful that Chrysler will eventually resolve these issues. Although I was offered a $250 gift card, it never arrived due to a glitch in the system. I am still waiting for it, but I am confident that Chrysler will eventually sort it out. Despite these issues, I believe that Chrysler has great potential and I hope that they will improve their customer service in the future.I recently received a letter in the mail about the February recall and learned that there was a fix available. If I had not found the article myself, I would have been driving around this entire time never knowing that my battery was at risk of fire. I really like the look of this car and I hoped it would be a vehicle that lasted us through the years. Unfortunately, it has been nothing but trouble.

  3. Nico Bahringer 2025-07-08

    Vehicle year: 2004

Although I had some initial doubts, I am confident in my decision to purchase this car. While some reviews were negative, I have found that my personal experience has been positive overall. I have made some necessary repairs, such as replacing the blower module and headlamps, but I am satisfied with the performance of the vehicle. While there have been some minor issues with the heater controls and oil consumption, I have been able to address them effectively. Overall, I am pleased with my purchase and believe that this car is a reliable choice.

  4. Ed Lemke 2025-07-06

    Vehicle year: 2020

The car has experienced some transmission issues, which have been addressed by a dealership through major transmission work. However, the car still shifts hard from park to drive. In addition, there have been some miscellaneous problems, such as a broken sunroof motor that had to be replaced and a sliding door that did not open properly, requiring the glass to be reinstalled. The check engine light has also come on a few times. Despite these issues, it is important to note that the car is only 8 months old.

  5. Sam Cruickshank 2025-07-05

    Vehicle year: 2005

Hello! I wanted to share my experience with this car. Unfortunately, I had some issues with it consuming oil from the beginning, and it took a while to get it resolved. Despite some struggles with Chrysler, I was eventually able to get the engine replaced, which was covered under warranty. However, there were some additional repairs that were not covered, which was a bit frustrating. In the end, I decided to switch to a Toyota for something more reliable. Just wanted to share my story with you!

Latest positive Chrysler Pacifica car reviews

  1. Thurman Gerlach 2025-07-13

    Vehicle year: 2020

I just got my car last night so I have much to explore. But driving home on the icy roads in the mountains, I loved how solid it felt. It hugged the road like my Beamer does. The heated seats, auto bright lights, and lots of details make the car easy to use. It's roomy and comfortable. I already love it!

  2. Enrique Fahey 2025-07-10

    Vehicle year: 2023

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience as a Pacifica owner since 2017. I've driven it both in-town and annually between Maryland and Florida, and I must say it has been outstanding in terms of performance and reliability. The hybrid engine provides great acceleration and the handling is more car-like than minivan-like, which makes driving it a totally different experience. At the same time, it offers the cargo handling benefits of a minivan. The only downsides I've noticed are that the middle seats can't be easily stowed in the floor due to the hybrid engine (although they are said to be more comfortable than the regular Pacifica's seats), and that full charging on standard 110v power takes a long time (ie, overnight). Also, the headlights could be brighter. Overall, I highly recommend the Pacifica for anyone looking for a reliable and versatile vehicle.

  3. Enos Dibbert 2025-07-09

I purchased this vehicle from a family member in September 15 and it has been a great family car. The kids love it and it has plenty of interior space, which was a huge gain coming from a 2dr wrangler. Although it may not be the coolest car, it performs well and has decent fuel economy for an 06 model. I took it on a long road trip and it performed exceptionally well. The only maintenance I have done is changing the oil and replacing the back rotors. It is a large vehicle, which can be difficult to park in the city, but it drives like a sedan. I have been lucky to have one of the good ones, as many other reviews mention issues with the transmission, motor mounts, and rusting engine cradle. If I ever have to fix any of those issues, I will either trade it in or sell it for a low price. It is a popular vehicle on the used car market, so much so that Chrysler brought it back as a new full-fledged mini-van, which looks like a giant chunky 200c. Apparently, they are killing off the Town and Country and the Dodge Caravan. I have the base version with the 3.5L engine, which is decent. I can imagine that the 07-08 models with the 4.0L engine have much better acceleration and a 6-speed transmission, but those models are more expensive and appear to be less reliable. I would recommend purchasing this vehicle with under 100K miles and making sure to inspect the motor mounts and engine cradle to ensure they are not rusted out. Otherwise, you may be stuck with a money pit that no one will buy. Overall, it's a great family vehicle that I would recommend to others.

I wasn't initially considering a minivan, but after looking at several SUVs, including the VW Atlas, I found that the Atlas was my favorite. I also checked out the Odyssey and Pacifica, and I really appreciated the stow & go arrangement in the Pacifica. The interior of the Pacifica is even better than the Odyssey, and the screen on the 2018 model is much more responsive. The 360 camera was a huge selling point for me, as it's an extremely valuable safety feature that isn't available in the Honda. The stop and go ACC is also better than it functioned in the Odyssey, which only stops at 20 mph, unlike the CRV version. The 9-speed transmission in the Pacifica also shifted much better than in the Odyssey. The park assist function is hit or miss, but still helpful. Between the backup camera and 360-degree camera, you have more than enough assistance to park this big minivan. It's a very large vehicle, but it doesn't drive like one. Although I'm not sure about the reliability of the Pacifica, unlike the great Honda, I've decided to give the Pacifica engineers my money. I hope it all works out. This is my first Chrysler product.

I wanted to share my thoughts on this car. While it's not perfect, I gave it a 5-star rating because I'm satisfied with its performance in each category. The Stow and Go seating is one of the main reasons I purchased the vehicle, and I haven't had any issues requiring service beyond the initial purchase. However, like others, I feel that the 9-speed transmission could use some refining to be as smooth as older automatic configurations, and I would like the option of greater downshift control. What sold me on the car in the first place was the greater amount of options available for a car with cloth seats. Although there were options that I would have liked to have had, like the adaptive cruise control, they were excluded because of my preference. (Due to the Florida sun, my personal first requirement is cloth seats.) The greatest detraction of the Pacifica was the ESS, the engine stops when you stop at a light. (I will gladly pay the hundred dollar plus price for the electronic module that disables this feature once it is developed for this model.) I have owned other minivans of different manufacturers and did compare them again before I purchased the Pacifica. I will admit that the Pacifica was not the first van I looked at, but it did become my first choice. I have also driven some competing manufacturers' vans since I acquired this one, and the experiences have confirmed that the Pacifica was the right choice. I believe the U Connect system is the best electronic package of the three manufacturers, and I am pleased with the car as a whole. I highly recommend this van and would buy it again.
