Common Chrysler Pacifica problems
The Chrysler Pacifica is a popular minivan, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems that owners have reported. These issues range from electrical and engine problems to transmission and paint concerns.
One of the most reported problems with the Chrysler Pacifica is its faulty paint, which bubbles and prematurely peels off, exposing metal surfaces. This issue is particularly prevalent in the 2017 model year, and it can lead to rusting and further damage to the vehicle's exterior.
Another common problem with the Pacifica is its transmission. Cruise control defects, transmission problems, and carbon buildup are all issues that have been reported by owners.
In addition to these issues, the Chrysler Pacifica has also been known to have problems with its steering, suspension, and body/paint. Some owners have had to replace the nine-speed automatic gearbox, which can start to run jerky and dry before finally breaking down. The sliding doors can also open or close unexpectedly, which can be a safety concern.
Recalls have also been a problem for the Chrysler Pacifica. There are over twenty recalls for the Pacifica, with one affecting all model years (2017 to 2023) of the Pacifica hybrid. A wiring connector inside the transmission could short-circuit in some cases, resulting in a loss of power. The vast majority of recalls concern early-generation Pacifica models (2017 and 2018), hybrid or otherwise. These often affect only a small number of units, but they can still be a cause for concern for Pacifica owners.
In conclusion, while the Chrysler Pacifica is a popular and well-designed minivan, it has its share of common problems that owners have reported. These issues range from paint and transmission problems to electrical and safety concerns. It's worth noting that many of these issues have been reported in earlier model years, and that more recent models may have addressed some of these concerns. However, potential buyers should still be aware of these issues and do their due diligence before purchasing a Chrysler Pacifica.
What problems does the Chrysler Pacifica have?
On the other hand, the Pacifica has experienced problems with its steering, transmission and suspension. Some owners have had to replace the nine-speed automatic gearbox, which can start to run jerky and dry before finally breaking down. Like many others, the Pacifica is not immune to electronic glitches.
What years to avoid on Chrysler Pacifica?
The Pacifica has 2 generations, each with their own issues. Using the same PainRank™ system we've determined that you're better off avoiding the 1st generation (2004–2008).
Are Chrysler Pacificas reliable?
The Chrysler Pacifica minivan has above-average reliability scores on RepairPal with a 3.5 out of 5, but its annual repair cost is pricey. Cruise control defects, paint peeling and rusting, and transmission problems are notable common problems for the Pacifica minivan.
How many miles will a Chrysler Pacifica last?
150,000 to 200,000 miles
On average, a well-maintained Chrysler Pacifica for sale can be expected to last anywhere from 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. This translates to about 10 to 15 years of use. However, it's important to note that these are just estimates, and individual experiences may vary.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-27
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
- VIN: 2C4RC1N74NR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The vehicle is equipped with multizone AC, and one day the REAR passenger AC system malfunctioned. This occurred during the heatwave period this summer. The AC would not turn off, after multiple attempts, neither through the infotainment screen nor the manual buttons. We tried all possible ways to turn it off and it would not. Furthermore, it was automatically set to high heat, and the temperature also could not be changed. It is available for inspection if needed. Our [XXX] child was the rear seat occupant at the time, and was on the verge of overheating. We took the vehicle to the dealership, explained the issue in detail, and also showed them the clear video evidence of the problem. Because the issue was intermittent, they did not inspect it nor repaired it because it was working fine in their possession. Manufacturer was also notified of the issue, and repeated the same dialogue as the dealer, which is, that they can not resolve it if they can not reproduce it. There were no warning codes, lights, or messages for this issue. After receiving the vehicle back from the dealer, unrepaired, the problem happened again the same day. It is now back at another dealer hoping to be repaired and the issue diagnosed/reproduced. This is making us very nervous if it happens again, during a freeway drive or a long road trip, our road safety and children's health is at risk. The dealership and manufacturer have not demonstrated urgency for this matter, and treat it as any other "intermittent" issue. They advised us to bring it back if it occurs again. Should we really be testing these diagnostics on the road with our children's safety or comfort at stake? Thank you for giving us the opportunity to bring this matter to your attention. She was shifting from Park to Drive just after our children got out of the vehicle in the school parking lot when the whole vehicle froze up and the dashboard lite up with all error lights including the engine light. It was flashing "Service Hybrid Battery System", "Service Transmission", "Turn off parking brake" and the Vehicle began to power cycle on and off, then on with gas motor, then on with electric motor. The vehicle could not be powered off and it could not be shifted out of gear and the parking brake could not be disengaged. The tow truck had to drag our Pacifica onto the flatbed while it continued to turn on and off and cycle through the engine and hybrid system. This vehicle has 36,000 miles and just had the transmission replaced under the "Recall for hybrid transmission systems" This is the second time this has happened, it originally occurred at 7000 miles and after the dealer had it for a week we were told there was no problem. The dealer had to pull a bunch of fuses and the 12v battery to get the vehicle to stop turning off and on, the same thing happened this time when it was dragged off the flatbed at the dealer.

I am unable to park my car by my house due to the fire risk, which has required me to buy monthly parking passes. I am unable to charge my car, which has caused increased gas costs. I previously paid to install a level 2 charger in my home, which I am unable to use. Additionally a concerning electrical noise has started to occur when starting the car or long after turning the car off. I am continually anxious about driving this car with my children, but I have no other choice to continually put all of us at risk. My wife loved her Sienna, and while I personally didn't enjoy it as much, it was a reliable vehicle with only one minor issue. We sold it when we moved overseas, and upon returning to the states, we decided to purchase a Mazda5 for its fuel efficiency. However, with the addition of our third child, we quickly realized that it was not spacious enough for our needs. Despite my initial preference for an Odyssey, my wife was set on a Sienna. However, after test driving the Pacifica, we were both impressed with its features, including the sunroofs, seats, and storage. We ultimately decided on the Pacifica, and have been very happy with our choice. We added 10 inch TV/DVD players ourselves for a fraction of the cost of the entertainment package, and have found the van to be well-designed and enjoyable to drive. It's great to hear that the van is performing better than expected! It's also wonderful to hear that you and your partner are both happy with your purchase. I hope you have a fantastic trip in it. It's also great to hear that you haven't encountered any issues with the van, unlike some of the stories you may have heard about other Toyota models.

Hi there! We absolutely adore our Pacifica Hybrid, but we have experienced a few instances where the vehicle doesn't move when it's running. We've found that turning it off and restarting it has done the trick so far. We think it might be related to the transmission dial, as the vehicle doesn't immediately respond to changes in the dial and there's a long hesitation. Have you experienced anything similar?

This vehicle is a delight to drive. The safety features on this van are incredible. You won't believe what happened when we were rear-ended on an interstate highway. The Pacifica was totaled, but we walked away safe and sound! No one could believe we were not seriously injured after seeing the van's condition. I trust this vehicle so much that I'm getting a 2019 as soon as I can!

Congratulations on your new 2021 Pinnacle in Ocean Blue! It's great to hear that you were able to take advantage of the $7,500 federal tax credit. I understand that you traded in a 2018 Toyota Avalon, which is also a fantastic highway car with impressive fuel efficiency. However, I can see why you would prefer an SUV or van for easier entry and exit, especially as you get older. The Pacifica sounds like a wonderful choice, with its smooth ride and impressive electric mileage. I'm glad to hear that the seats are comfortable and visibility is good, and that the adaptive cruise control worked well on your recent road trip. Overall, it sounds like you made a great purchase and I hope you continue to enjoy your new van!

Vehicle year: 2017
While on vacation in Hilton Head Island, I rented a '17 Pacifica to transport my girlfriend, our two bikes, and two kayaks back to Pittsburgh. Despite my bad back, the 700-mile trip (mostly at 80-90 mph, even with kayaks on the roof) did not leave me feeling sore. I was so impressed that I bought one for my job delivering auto parts to remote areas in western PA. Since the end of 2018, I have driven over 227,000 miles with zero engine problems, even with the same spark plugs. I only recently had my first repair when the front driver's side wheel bearing went bad. At 10k miles, the electrical system started acting up occasionally, but all of the issues have self-healed except for the USB not working 15% of the time. At 182k, the transmission started hard shifting, which is a somewhat common issue. The transmission shop said failure was imminent, but I found that if I accelerate briskly from 0-15mph or really slowly, it doesn't happen. Now, at 227k, it's only gotten a little worse. The dealer said the trans fluid is 'lifetime' and wouldn't change it, but this is only true if lifetime = less than 100k miles. At 140k, it started humming just before upshifting around 45-50mph. Perhaps if I had changed the oil at 50k instead of 140k, I wouldn't be having a line pressure issue. To change it, you need to remove the driver's side front wheel and siphon about 6 quarts of fluid. You've already done a great job with your van! Just a heads up, you can refill with Mopar 9 speed ATF which is about $50 a quart at the dealership and $25 on Rockauto.com. You'll need to buy a $25 special dip stick to make sure everything is in order. Despite some quirks, I'm still happy with the van. I'm looking at a quarter million miles with only one wheel bearing as an actual repair and, of course oil, trans and tire changes is pretty good. The mileage is still consistently in the high 20's and I do tow a Bayliner 175 about 4k miles a year (boat and trailer 2500lbs). The infotainment system on the base LX is not the best, but it's a mini van that's fast and super comfy to sit in. Plus, I paid $23,500 and saw some 2019's for closer to 22! So, all in all, it's a fine vehicle and not the ugliest mini van out there. -C'est la vie.

I purchased my 22 Pacifica in June 2022. Unfortunately, we experienced issues with the stereo not connecting to Bluetooth and freezing before we even left the lot. Despite the dealership noting the issue, the problem persisted and we had to take it back to the dealer three times. After 10 days in the shop, they finally determined that it needed a new stereo. However, this issue still hasn't been resolved. In August 2022, we had to take it in again as both front doors were sagging and had to be realigned at the body shop. Additionally, the sliding doors only work 50% of the time, and the ceiling vent fell out and hit my daughter. In September 2022, we noticed an annoying rattle in the dash, and the back hatch began slamming when closing. Despite taking it back to the dealer, they couldn't find the rattle and still haven't repaired the strut for the rear door. In January 2023, I had to start a lemon case against Chrysler as the brakes were vibrating and eventually caught fire. To make matters worse, the vehicle was side-swiped in the back lot while at the dealership. It's a major safety concern, and I'm frustrated that Chrysler hasn't taken any action. I'm not alone in this, and I believe they are hiding the real numbers.

I purchased this car in late August and unfortunately experienced electrical problems from the very first week. During a long distance trip, the electronics system went dead twice, which was concerning. A few days later, the side door failed to open and close electronically and the car issued an engine malfunction message on the radio screen. Additionally, the Adaptive Cruise Control/Forward Cruise Control has failed several times. I have brought the car back to the dealer over 20 times to repair these issues, which are safety concerns that should have been addressed immediately. Furthermore, I was disappointed to discover that Chrysler falsely advertised that this car has wifi capability, which it does not. Although I was able to connect a hotspot in the car for a month, without notifying me, the hotspot was cancelled and I was still charged by AT&T. I have contacted Chrysler about these problems and was transferred to three different case managers who simply tried to get me to sign a release in exchange for one month's payment of my lease. Despite my numerous requests to return the car, I have been stonewalled each time. I have wasted a lot of time driving back and forth to the dealership to get this car repaired and the problems persist. I urge potential buyers to be cautious when considering this car.

Although my Chrysler Pacifica Limited has had a few issues, I am confident in its overall quality and features. While I have had to take it to the dealership for repairs, I am still impressed with its interior comfort and features. I am confident that any issues that arise will be resolved quickly and efficiently.

Underpowered with horrible mileage (14.2mpg @2500 miles so far) despite living in flat southern NJ. The quality of the interior items such as the thin carpet, switches, and console doors is very cheap. I have had to go back to the dealer three times in 1 1/2 months for problems that they are aware of. However, it looks very nice and the kids love it. Parents, please think twice before making a decision!

During a trip from South Carolina to Tennessee, we experienced a scary incident on a mountain road. While in a pull off, I put the car in reverse and it malfunctioned. The transmission locked up, all the lights came on, and the parking brake lit up. After 15 minutes of trying to reset the car, we were finally able to drive home with no further issues. However, a few weeks later, my wife and three young daughters were almost in a serious accident when the transmission locked up while driving on a busy road. We immediately took the car to the dealership and after 2.5 weeks and 4,600 miles, we were told that the van was fixed and safe. Unfortunately, last week while driving on a busy 55 mph road with my wife and son's wife behind us, the transmission locked up again and we had to pull off the road. This was a very dangerous situation and we are lucky that no one was hurt. We have informed Chrysler that we no longer feel safe putting our family in any Pacifica and are requesting a refund. We hope that Chrysler will work with us to resolve this issue.
