Common Chrysler Pacifica problems

The Chrysler Pacifica is a popular minivan, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems that owners have reported. These issues range from electrical and engine problems to transmission and paint concerns.

One of the most reported problems with the Chrysler Pacifica is its faulty paint, which bubbles and prematurely peels off, exposing metal surfaces. This issue is particularly prevalent in the 2017 model year, and it can lead to rusting and further damage to the vehicle's exterior.

Another common problem with the Pacifica is its transmission. Cruise control defects, transmission problems, and carbon buildup are all issues that have been reported by owners.

The Chrysler Pacifica's electrical system has also been a source of frustration for some owners. Faulty touchscreens, malfunctioning cruise control, and electronic glitches have all been reported. These issues can affect the vehicle's safety and performance, making it difficult to use some of the Pacifica's features and functions.

In addition to these issues, the Chrysler Pacifica has also been known to have problems with its steering, suspension, and body/paint. Some owners have had to replace the nine-speed automatic gearbox, which can start to run jerky and dry before finally breaking down. The sliding doors can also open or close unexpectedly, which can be a safety concern.

Recalls have also been a problem for the Chrysler Pacifica. There are over twenty recalls for the Pacifica, with one affecting all model years (2017 to 2023) of the Pacifica hybrid. A wiring connector inside the transmission could short-circuit in some cases, resulting in a loss of power. The vast majority of recalls concern early-generation Pacifica models (2017 and 2018), hybrid or otherwise. These often affect only a small number of units, but they can still be a cause for concern for Pacifica owners.

In conclusion, while the Chrysler Pacifica is a popular and well-designed minivan, it has its share of common problems that owners have reported. These issues range from paint and transmission problems to electrical and safety concerns. It's worth noting that many of these issues have been reported in earlier model years, and that more recent models may have addressed some of these concerns. However, potential buyers should still be aware of these issues and do their due diligence before purchasing a Chrysler Pacifica.

  • VIN: 2C4RC1BG2HR
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Touring L with 3.6L engine. Odometer 78623 miles. Noted rough idling of engine for a few seconds when started. Later in day, at low speeds, check engine light came on solidly (no flashing) for a few seconds and then turned off. Early next morning took van to reputable local mechanic who has maintained the vehicle according to Chrysler recommendations. They pulled error code P0305 Cylinder misfire. • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-27
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
  • VIN: 2C4RC1N74NR
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The vehicle is equipped with multizone AC, and one day the REAR passenger AC system malfunctioned. This occurred during the heatwave period this summer. The AC would not turn off, after multiple attempts, neither through the infotainment screen nor the manual buttons. We tried all possible ways to turn it off and it would not. Furthermore, it was automatically set to high heat, and the temperature also could not be changed. It is available for inspection if needed. Our [XXX] child was the rear seat occupant at the time, and was on the verge of overheating. We took the vehicle to the dealership, explained the issue in detail, and also showed them the clear video evidence of the problem. Because the issue was intermittent, they did not inspect it nor repaired it because it was working fine in their possession. Manufacturer was also notified of the issue, and repeated the same dialogue as the dealer, which is, that they can not resolve it if they can not reproduce it. There were no warning codes, lights, or messages for this issue. After receiving the vehicle back from the dealer, unrepaired, the problem happened again the same day. It is now back at another dealer hoping to be repaired and the issue diagnosed/reproduced. This is making us very nervous if it happens again, during a freeway drive or a long road trip, our road safety and children's health is at risk. The dealership and manufacturer have not demonstrated urgency for this matter, and treat it as any other "intermittent" issue. They advised us to bring it back if it occurs again. Should we really be testing these diagnostics on the road with our children's safety or comfort at stake? Thank you for giving us the opportunity to bring this matter to your attention. It was flashing "Service Hybrid Battery System", "Service Transmission", "Turn off parking brake" and the Vehicle began to power cycle on and off, then on with gas motor, then on with electric motor. The vehicle could not be powered off and it could not be shifted out of gear and the parking brake could not be disengaged. The tow truck had to drag our Pacifica onto the flatbed while it continued to turn on and off and cycle through the engine and hybrid system. This vehicle has 36,000 miles and just had the transmission replaced under the "Recall for hybrid transmission systems" This is the second time this has happened, it originally occurred at 7000 miles and after the dealer had it for a week we were told there was no problem. The dealer had to pull a bunch of fuses and the 12v battery to get the vehicle to stop turning off and on, the same thing happened this time when it was dragged off the flatbed at the dealer.

I am unable to park my car by my house due to the fire risk, which has required me to buy monthly parking passes. I am unable to charge my car, which has caused increased gas costs. I previously paid to install a level 2 charger in my home, which I am unable to use. Additionally a concerning electrical noise has started to occur when starting the car or long after turning the car off. I am continually anxious about driving this car with my children, but I have no other choice to continually put all of us at risk. Latest negative Chrysler Pacifica car reviews

  1. Vance Skiles 2025-05-29

    Vehicle year: 2020

The charging system in our vehicle stopped working, which was disappointing as we had hoped it would meet our needs. Unfortunately, this is not the first time we have had issues with a Chrysler product, and we are considering avoiding them in the future. Our Pacifica van has been at the dealer for three weeks now, which is frustrating. We are unsure if this qualifies as a lemon, as the dealer says no and our lawyer says maybe, depending on future problems. Despite these challenges, we are still hopeful for a wonderful experience with our expensive car that will help the environment.

  2. Pietro Spinka 2025-05-21

    Vehicle year: 2017

I am sorry to hear about the issues you have been experiencing with your Pacifica 2017. It is understandable that you are frustrated with the situation, especially after taking the car to the dealership multiple times. As a confident solution, I suggest that you consider invoking the Lemon Law. This will ensure that you receive the necessary support and compensation for the issues you have been facing. I hope this information helps you make an informed decision. Best of luck.

  3. Tanner Treutel 2025-05-18

    Vehicle year: 2018

The computer repeatedly hangs and resets, causing a loss of navigation, radio, and warning systems. The loudspeakers have quality issues, particularly in the rear due to poor installation. Additionally, the rear doors have a tendency to open by themselves a few seconds after being closed. The navigation system is significantly behind the technology available on modern cellphones. The biggest issue with handling is the gear only supporting D & L, which causes a lack of control on steep climbs or slopes. This can result in either excessive braking or the car constantly hunting for gears. However, the Sequoia and Yosemite trips were made more comfortable by the amazingly good seats for the driver and passenger, as well as the best-in-class seats for the kids in the back. After testing the competition, the kids won't hear about the others.

  4. Rick Hudson 2025-05-11

    Vehicle year: 2005

When the Pacifica first came out, we did buy one and unfortunately had a lot of trouble with it. However, in 07 we decided to give it another chance and purchased a Pacifica Limited all wheel drive. While we have experienced some issues, we are confident that they can be resolved. Although we have had some setbacks, we still appreciate the spaciousness and attractive design of the car. We hope to get it fixed soon and continue to enjoy it. Thank you for your understanding.

  5. Dedrick Howe 2025-05-04

    Vehicle year: 2023

Although the car has not yet reached 7000 miles, it has unfortunately experienced several issues. I had to replace both batteries before the car even reached 5000 miles, which I paid for out of pocket due to the long wait times for appointments at the Chrysler service center. The transmission has been problematic, with jerking, hard shifts, and failure to shift gears when needed. Additionally, the suspension is quite sensitive, as even the slightest bump or pothole can cause significant shaking. It's been a frustrating experience so far, but I'm hopeful that these issues can be resolved soon.

I really wish this minivan had all-wheel drive, especially since I live on a hill and it can be difficult to navigate in the snow. However, I must say that the interior of the van is absolutely amazing! It feels like I'm in my own private modern spaceship with a beautiful dashboard, cushy leather seats, and modern controls. It's like being in a luxurious spa! The 360-degree camera is great and beeps when you're about to bump into something. The rear camera is also fantastic because it shows you your view from above. And the self-parking feature is just so much fun! I love putting my hands up in the air while the car parks itself, and it always draws a crowd of admirers. This feature is especially helpful for parking in NYC! However, there are a few caveats to keep in mind. Firstly, there is no spare tire because Chrysler swapped the space for the vacuum system. This caused some trouble when I bumped into a curb and needed a tow. Secondly, the vacuum system is a great idea, but the details need some improvement. The hose was not screwed down properly and the dealer had trouble fixing it due to awkward positioning. Stowing the vacuum in the second seat side panel is also not easy and needs improvement. Lastly, the feature to kick and open the door is not available, despite being advertised. Overall, I still love my minivan and would highly recommend it!

    Vehicle year: 2017

I recently traded my 2016 Honda Odyssey EX for a second-hand 2017 Pacifica. The Odyssey's interior design had some human factors issues that made it uncomfortable for me and my family. For instance, the speedometer had white numbers on a bright metallic background, making it difficult to read with polarized sunglasses in sunny weather. Additionally, my 5'2On the other hand, I found the third row seats to be surprisingly comfortable, even more so than those in the Odyssey. What really impressed me was the gas mileage. During the 128 mile trip home from the dealership, we averaged an impressive 30.6 mpg, even with the 2,000 foot climb up the mountain near our home. Over the first 115 miles, we saw an impressive 33 mpg over rolling hills at 70 mph. In comparison, the Odyssey usually averaged 26-27 mpg, never exceeding 28 mpg over the same route. The new 9 speed transmission is incredibly smooth, without any of the noise associated with a CVT. Braking response is also more positive than that of the Odyssey, with braking beginning higher on the pedal and slightly more resistance. The only downside I've noticed so far is the windshield mounted rear view mirror, which provides a somewhat closed-in view to the rear. Living in the mountains with very few straight and level roads, I was pleased to find that the Pacifica handles every bit as well as the Odyssey did, with very little body roll and no reminders of the large metal structure behind you. If you're considering an Odyssey, I highly recommend test driving the Pacifica before making your decision. I hope that the Pacifica's reliability over the long haul will be just as good, if not better, than the Honda. Addendum: It's worth noting that some models do not come with a spare tire, only a slime patch kit and a pump. However, you can purchase a donut spare (which comes un-inflated) and store it in the compartment in the far rear on the left side. Without the spare, there are two smaller compartments, so if you do decide to buy the spare, you'll also need to purchase the new panel that covers the spare storage area. These items can be quite expensive, so it's worth trying to negotiate with the dealer to include them if the model you want doesn't come with them.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to say that I think your Pacifica 2004 is a beautiful vehicle! From my experience, the ride is unbelievably comfortable. If you're not feeling the same way, it might be worth checking your tires. Personally, I absolutely love this vehicle, quirks and all. I've noticed that the front end can make a noise when braking, but it doesn't seem to affect the performance at all. Of course, the gas mileage isn't the best, but I knew that going in after reading some reviews. It's worth noting that while it seats 6, the rear is mainly for children and there isn't much cargo space with a full load, so a luggage rack might be necessary. Overall, I've had mine for 8 years and put 106,000 miles on it, and I'm still a big fan!

We replaced our 2006 3.5 4 spd with a 2008 4.0 6 spd and what a difference it has made! The '06 had a transmission problem that couldn't be fixed before we had to travel, but now we have a faster acceleration from the light and better mileage on the highway. Although we get about the same mpg here in the Arkansas mountain community, we did replace the air filter with K&N and use synthetic oil. This vehicle rides and drives better than any we've owned before. We can even drive 800 miles a day with no problem. It's a shame they're going to discontinue it, but with the bumper to bumper lifetime warranty, we plan to drive it until it won't go.
