Common 2004 Chrysler Pacifica problems
The Chrysler Pacifica, produced from 2004 to 2008, is known to have several common problems that affect its engine and other components.
- Carbon Buildup in Valves: Another common problem with the Chrysler Pacifica's 3.5-liter and 4.0-liter V6 engines is carbon buildup in valves. This issue causes the check engine light to come on, indicating that multiple cylinders are misfiring. To solve this problem, the combustion chamber needs to be cleaned out to remove all the carbon and potentially update the valve spring retainers. This issue generally affects the Pacifica at an average of 131,000 miles, but it can occur as low as 60,000 miles. The cost to repair this issue is not estimated.
- Faulty Air-Conditioning (A/C): The 2004 Chrysler Pacifica's air-conditioning problems can become troublesome if they aren't immediately addressed. The issue may start as an abnormal hissing noise coming from the A/C, which can be heard every few seconds. If the A/C is busted, the cabin may become uncomfortable to stay in. No clear causes were reported, but these A/C complications may be linked to both component failure and electrical issues. Replacing the A/C unit won't fix electrical or wiring-related problems. It's best to ask a mechanic for an accurate diagnosis if you're having A/C problems with your Pacifica.
- Powertrain Control Module Software: Two recalls were issued for the 2004 Chrysler Pacifica, one of which addresses a problem with the powertrain control module software. On certain sport utility vehicles equipped with a NGC-1 powertrain control module, the software protocol used to test the vehicle exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system may lead to engine stalling. Dealers will reprogram the powertrain control module software to fix this issue.
- Fuel Supply Tube: Another recall for the 2004 Chrysler Pacifica addresses a problem with the chassis fuel supply tube, which may have been incorrectly manufactured. Dealers will install a secondary retention clip to the fuel line quick connect to fix this issue.
In summary, the Chrysler Pacifica, produced from 2004 to 2008, has several common problems that affect its engine, air-conditioning system, and powertrain control module software. These issues can lead to engine stalling, fuel leaks, and uncomfortable driving conditions. It's essential to address these problems promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

Bought used in 2009 for $15K (CAD) - here we are in 2023 and it's still going strong at 250,000 km. We've had a few years where we had to replace parts or do bodywork, but we have averaged less than $1000/year on maintenance and repair. This car has been a reliable and comfortable companion that will be hard to replace!

I wasn't initially thrilled with the long list of recall items on the website for the 2004 models. However, after doing some research, I found that other types of vehicles also had a long list. Before making a final commitment, I had the car fully checked. Now that I've purchased the Pacifica, I absolutely love it! It's really fun to drive and doesn't feel like a minivan. There's plenty of room for my tall sons and me, and it looks really nice. Overall, I'm completely satisfied.
-
I completely agree with the other reviews regarding the blind spots in the car. However, we found a simple solution to this problem by attaching little oval mirrors to the sideview mirrors. This has been a practice for us with every car we've owned. My wife's Pacifica has an electronic rearview mirror, but I would prefer a conventional day/night mirror if I were to get my own Pacifica. It can be difficult to see when backing up, especially with tinted windows, particularly at night. Installing a backup camera would be a great solution, and they are not as expensive as they used to be. Although I would love to have an Escalade or a Navigator, they are not fuel-efficient. The Pacifica, on the other hand, is at least 6 mpg better and has ample space for my two large dogs.

I really enjoy driving this wagon/SUV. I purchased it used with 37,000 miles on it. Although I did experience the car stalling three times in the span of a week (two times after it was left outside in the cold and once on the highway), it hasn't happened since. I think it may have been due to letting the gas mileage get below 30 miles in the tank before filling it up.
-
I am so glad to share my experience with this car! Despite some concerns about gas mileage, rear visibility, and repairs, I can confidently say that this car is built to last. Recently, I was in an accident where another driver ran a stop sign and hit me on the left front driver's side. Although my car sustained major damage to the fender, headlight, and bumper, the hood remained undamaged due to the height of the vehicle. Despite the impact, the car was still running and my young daughter and I were able to exit the car without any injuries. I was initially hesitant about driving such a heavy car, but after this experience, I am a true believer in the 5-star safety rating! Thank you for creating such a reliable and safe car.

I loved the car when I bought it. Although it is definitely a safe car to drive, it can be quite expensive to maintain. Have you experienced unexplainable stalling? How about heat issues when the blower motor and resistor go out? Or the shaking in the front of the car due to the need to replace the outer tie rod and nut set? Additionally, the inner ones need to be replaced after just 10,000 miles. And let's not forget about the need to replace the tires about every two years. My suggestion would be to invest in an extended warranty or consider getting a second job.
Adolphus Hermiston 2025-01-06
I purchased my first Pacifica in the summer of 2004. Unfortunately, it broke down within two weeks, almost causing an accident on the 4-lane, and had to be towed back to the dealership. Despite this setback, I decided to give the Pacifica another chance and purchased a slightly used one of the same type, but a different color. However, after about a year, engine lights started coming on for no reason and transmission lights began flashing constantly. The car also started skipping after about two years, especially when the cruise was on. Despite these issues, I have continued to service it every 3,000 miles. Recently, the car stopped working while I was driving to work, with the steering going out and the car becoming unresponsive.
Adelbert O'Kon 2024-11-17
Although I was excited to purchase my dream car, unfortunately, it has not met my expectations. I have experienced several issues such as the car shutting down on the expressway, oil leaking, clapping noise, kicking back while driving, and issues with the pulley tensioner and alternator. These problems have been frustrating, but I am confident that they can be resolved. I will be contacting the dealership to address these issues and ensure that my car is running smoothly.

We purchased the full-featured model with a DVD changer, and we have found it to be a great balance between the solidity of an SUV and the handling of a car. However, we have experienced some mechanical issues. The brake rotors were warped, and when the rear windows are open, an obnoxious, ear-deafening vibrating sound can be heard. Additionally, visibility is quite poor due to the small rear view window. We have also noticed that the driver side mirror makes a clicking noise and has limited mobility. Although we reported this to the dealer mechanic, they did not take any action. Furthermore, the tire sensors continuously go off, making it difficult to keep the air balanced accordingly. We recommend avoiding dealer mechanics at all costs, as they tend to overcharge. Lastly, we have noticed that the fuel efficiency is lower than the sticker at only 19 MPG. Despite these issues, we still find the car to be a good choice overall.
Kris Stamm 2024-10-11
The vehicle purchased a couple of months ago had some issues that did not meet my expectations. Despite its attractive appearance, the shifting was not smooth and the gas mileage was poor, which did not align with the touring model's standards. As a result, I decided to part ways with it.
