Common Chrysler Pacifica 2020 problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 2020 Chrysler Pacifica, several common problems have been reported:
- Coolant Sensor Issues: One of the most widespread complaints involves coolant sensor issues. The sensor tends to wear out quickly, leading to the van going into limp mode as it cannot monitor the temperature effectively. Replacing the sensor is typically done under warranty on newer vans or costs around $300 out of warranty.
- Check Engine Light: Some Pacifica owners have reported issues with the check engine light within the first 30,000 miles. This light can come on due to problems like a stuck gas filler flap. Repairing this issue usually costs around $50, depending on local labor rates.
- Frozen Stereo System: Another common problem is a frozen stereo system, which has been observed in some 2020 Pacifica models within the first 5,000 miles. Software updates are available to improve reliability, with most dealerships offering to install these updates for free or charging around $50.
- Engine Shutting Down Recall: There is a serious recall for the engine shutting down due to an electrical short. Chrysler addresses this issue by updating the power inverter.
- Rearview Camera Recall: Another recall involves the rearview camera, which is fixed through a software update.
These problems, while not exhaustive, highlight some of the key issues reported by owners of the 2020 Chrysler Pacifica. Owners experiencing these problems are advised to seek professional assistance to address these issues promptly and ensure the continued reliability and safety of their vehicles.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-27
- VIN: 2C4RC1GG3LR
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Car started to rock and the engine light came on with a cylinder 3 misfire code (P0303). We replaced the spark plug and coil on cylinder 3 and the issue resolved temporarily. About 48 hours later the rocking and engine light came back on with the same error code. We swapped the spark plug and coil on cylinder 3 for those on cylinder 1. The check engine light turned off but we would still get the rocking intermittently. We also noticed the coolant level was low and there are water vapor coming from the exhaust in the morning when starting the engine. The engine temperature never got hot that we noticed. We refilled the coolant level but it would slowly drop, and we felt there may be a leak or, with the cylinder 3 misfire, there may be a blown head gasket. We tried a K-seal coolant leak repair. This stopped the coolant leak and rocking for a few weeks, but the leak and engine rocking started to return. We took it to an auto-body shop and, after flushing the line, they checked the engine head gasket which had a leak on cylinder 3 (and apparently cylinder 1 was also starting to go bad). This had to be replaced along with a bad radiator fan assembly. After looking online, there have been very similar issues with other Pacifica engine head gaskets, so we decided to file a report.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-07
- VIN: 2C4RC1BG2LR
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: I’m experiencing persistent issues with my 2020 Chrysler engine. While driving, the engine frequently shuts down unexpectedly, often resembling a start-stop feature. When I come to a stop, the engine and lights go out, and the vehicle won’t restart, which is particularly concerning while in traffic. Additionally, when accelerating, I notice a jolt in the engine followed by a loud knocking sound. These problems significantly affect the vehicle's performance and pose a serious safety risk. I would appreciate any guidance on diagnosing and resolving these issues.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-22
- VIN: 2C4RC1N74LR
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: A coolant leak in the engine led to contamination, misfiring spark plugs. Check engine light came on while driving, and very soon thereafter (~3 minutes) car began sputtering while accelerating and shaking while idle. Acceleration seemed particularly unreliable and dangerous, leading driver to immediately exit the highway and continue straight to dealership on back roads. Dealer found that coolant had leaked into the engine, causing the need to replace right side cylinder head, gasket and spark plug.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-14
- VIN: 2C4RC1L72LR
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I have a 2020 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid that has had transmission issues since 2022. I have taken it to the dealer 8 times for repair for the same transmission issue. In August 2022, the vehicle shut down on the interstate while driving. It was determined that it needed a new transmission after just two years. The vehicle was with the dealer for over 30 days awaiting a new transmission. Once the transmission was replaced, there was a battery issue in February 2023. In January 2024, the vehicle went into limp mode again, for the first time after the transmission was replaced. Repairs were attempted at the dealer. I have continued to have issues throughout 2024. In July 2024, the transmission wiring harness was replaced. The vehicle has gone into limp mode three more times since then. On 14 September, the most recent time the vehicle went into limp mode on the interstate, I took it into the dealer, and it was determined a second transmission replacement was needed. Chrysler has now issued a lifetime warranty on the transmission. It's only a matter of time before significant injury or loss of life occurs because of the transmission issues, especially because they normally occur only at higher speeds on the highway. Clearly, installing a third (or fourth or fifth) transmission will not fix the issues in this faulty vehicle. When I contacted Chrysler Cares yesterday I was told that because the transmission will be replaced for only the second time, I do not qualify for a buyback. However, it has been to the dealer to be serviced 8 times and was there for over 30 days during the first transmission replacement.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-22
- VIN: 2C4RC1H7XLR
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Vehicle sudden loss of power 3x in 3 months. Van has known recall for loss of power/possible transmission problem. Traveling 30-50mph for 20 minutes, start of morning temps 70 degrees, recall warranty (update was software to warn driver of power loss on screen) done and 1 month later began power loss. Screen reads "Stop Safely Vehicle Will Shut Off Soon", engine light on, red turtle light on. Loss of power would not warn drivers to rear of slow down since brakes are not pressed promoting rear end collision, highway speeds slow down causes traffic and collision with limited place to exit safely, loss of power would not allow driver to exit traffic thus causing danger , obstacle for other drivers to avoid. Vehicle at dealer for software update: May 2024 , 3x power losses after, 9/2024 returned to dealer, currently in service at dealer Data Source: Recall 23V010, Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened investigation PE22-008 regarding complaints alleging a loss of motive power condition potentially due to a transmission malfunction in Model Years 2019-2021 Chrysler Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-28
- VIN: 2C4RC1N79LR
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Pacifica hybrid turned on but would not shift out of park or turn off. The radio was playing, air was blowing (though not cold), power doors were not functioning. The car was towed to a Chrysler service center while still running. They turned the car off and when they looked at it several days later there were no errors codes and the car was turning on/off and able to shift out of park and drive. They returned the car to me without any explanation for why this happened. The car was purchased 13 months ago and this is the second time this has happened. The car did the same thing in January 2024. The car ran for hours without being able to shift out of park or turn off. The car died by the time it was towed to the Chrysler service center. The service center recommended replacing the auxiliary battery at that time, which we did (Jan 2024). They said there were no mechanical error codes showing.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-10
- VIN: 2C4RC1L78LR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: While driving our van last Saturday afternoon, an error notification made a ding sound and the error message "STOP SAFELY. VEHICLE WILL SHUT OFF SOON" appeared on our dashboard. Thankfully we were driving through a small town at the time and were able to safely pull into a parking lot, turn the vehicle off and wait a few minutes, and start it up to find the error message gone, and we could resume driving. Upon researching this issue, I learned that there is an Open Investigation, NHTSA Action #RQ24004, as of 2-27-24, that correlates exactly with our issue and explains my exact concern - should this error message come on again at a time when I cannot pull into a safe area, or at night time in the dark, with my children along, this could be extremely unsafe. I now worry to take our vehicle on longer trips, as I fear that this will happen and leave us in need of help. This leaves drivers with an extremely uneasy feeling to drive with their family, unsure of if or when this will happen again and if the vehicle will start up again after stopping or if it would need to be towed. I feel this safety issue needs to be resolved before it leaves Chrysler's vehicle occupants in what could be a very unsafe situation.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-03
- VIN: 2C4RC1N72LR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: I was driving in a remote region of Washington in high heat (101 F) outside of Pasco, when my car alerted me that it was going to turn off and I needed to pull the car over and stop before it shut off. I had to rapidly decelerate and dodge other vehicles to make it to the shoulder of the highway. When I pulled over and shut it off, it reported that the charging system was broken and needed to be repaired. Once off, the car would not start back up. I called for a tow through my State Farm insurance but had trouble getting a vehicle to my location. After an hour of being stranded on the highway in high heat with small children, the car finally turned back on, with the check engine light on. I took it to the Chrysler service station in Walla Walla. They said that the car showed no errors and that it was safe to drive. The check engine light turned back off. I researched this and it’s related to recall 03A, which I am now having performed. The problem is that the fix they are doing for 03A does not fix the underlying problem — it just changed the text of the error message and adds potentially a few more seconds before the car turns off and I lose control of the vehicle. I don’t understand why this “fix” was accepted if the car is still unsafe to drive. I would expect Chrysler to have to replace the faulty components in the transmission. I often have to drive in remote, unpopulated areas in bad weather, icy conditions, etc. Even with the “fix”, the car will not be safe to drive in such conditions. What if my car turns off when I’m on a mountain pass on an icy road? If I survive the crash, I’ll still be stuck on the side of the road in freezing conditions. I am extremely disappointed that the NHTSA approved this “recall fix” that leaves these vehicles unsafe to drive. Because of the problems with this car, I can’t get very much for it in trade-in, and honestly it would be unethical to sell it to an unsuspecting family. Now I’m stuck with an expensive, unsafe vehicle.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-01
- VIN: 2C4RC3BG0LR
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: July 21, 2024 On June 1, 2024, while driving at normal speed under normal conditions, 2020 Chrysler Pacifica (with 14,600 miles) engine seized up, serpentine belt tore, power steering lost, and all lights went on within seconds. I immediately pulled to side of busy 495 Beltway. Dealership concludes that mounting bolts holding alternator in place simply sheared off, broke off causing alternator to drop into engine, tearing belt, breaking AC hose and chain of other breakages. As it turns out, this exact incident has been reported by others on the Chrysler Pacifica Forum online with pictures. Without obvious explanation, vehicle engine shuts down resulting in a very dangerous situation with loss of all control of the vehicle, including steering. One possible explanation is that the bolts are made from a mixed alloy and are very weak or that the bolts holding alternator as well as other engine components are over-torqued resulting in sudden snap breaking of multiple bolts. It is a very dangerous as well as helpless situation. Our vehicle has been at the dealership for over 6 weeks as they negotiate with Stellantis. The warranty expired in March 2024. Estimated cost of replacing alternator (the screws sheared off in such a clean manner that they cannot be extracted from the alternator), AC hose, serpentine belt, battery and more is at $6500 now. The mini-van has 14,600 miles and is used primarily for my 100% disabled veteran husband and his medical appointments. In summary, I am alerting the NHTSA as others hopefully have. This exact same experience of an engine seizing up due to over-torqued engine mounting bolts cleaning shearing off while driving at highway speed is extremely dangerous and cannot be due to normal owner driving/vehicle wear and tear. I recommend that the NHTSA do a further inquiry to this matter to ensure that responsibility is taken with Chrysler to prevent more serious accidents in the future. I will try to enclose photos. Thank you -
STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-07
- VIN: 2C4RC1EG7LR
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: My problem started about a year ago with the auto start/stop light coming on- said it needed serviced. They replaced my auxiliary battery. Mind you, my van was only about 2.5 years old at this point (bought it brand new). So then about a month ago, same warnings. Stop/start isn’t working. I get it inspected at the dealership, they say everything is fine. Well yesterday, my van stopped emergently in the middle of an intersection. The brake engaged, couldn’t use any pedals, steering or switch gears. I had to shut my vehicle off and restart. In the middle of a busy intersection at 4pm. The auto start/stop light keeps coming on. Take it to the dealership today and they said it’s a sensor issue with my hood switch. My hood thinks it’s open so my van freaks out and stops driving. It’s a $540 fix. This is a huge safety concern. From what I read, this van has had numerous start/stop issues and sensor problems. It’s a 2020 with 62k miles. I’m glad I wasn’t on the interstate or somewhere more dangerous.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-05
- VIN: 2C4RC1GG8LR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The stop start system on my 2020 Chrysler. Pacifica has been malfunctioning since 2021, I’ve taken this car into the dealer multiple times, and replaced the batteries that should’ve been covered by Warranty but weren’t and my car recently died completely, and had to be jumped only have to replace the battery changed again. I have complained about noises in the dashboard that sounds like ticking, and dealer says that’s not covered by warranty even though my car only has 50,000 miles on it, and at 13,000 miles, when I told them about it, they didn’t do anything about it. The electrical system will completely shut off, lights and warnings will turn on, and after pulling fuses, the system will start The vintage seats on the driver side have not worked for three years, I have informed the dealer about that and was at 15,000 miles and they still did not fix it after complaining every time I went in they finally said “it wasn’t covered under warranty anymore” even though I had complained about it and all the above when we were covered by the warranty. We even purchased an extended warranty when purchasing the car and it’s like jumping through hoops for them to actually look up what is actually covered and every a fight every time for them to not charge me what we already paid for!
SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-26
- VIN: 2C4RC1N73LR
- Components: SEATS
- Summary: Both 2nd row quad seats have failed. The lever for leaning the seat forward pulls a cable that has a large spring in a plastic housing that fails. It failed on both seats within the same day in a hot weather environment. After failure, the seats both slide and tilt without the ability to lock into position. This is a HUGE safety concern as it provides no restraint to the occupant. There are hundreds of accounts of this same issue on forums and reddit posts and highly documented the part that is failed. I have taken to a dealer for repair but fear it will happen again if the part has not been redesigned by Stellantis. There is no warning to this failure so it can happen at any time. Thankfully we were at home when it failed and not stranded somewhere else. With the hundreds of instances I have read accounted online, it is SHOCKING that this is not a recall yet.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-26
- VIN: 2C4RC1GG1LR
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: While driving, received "service power steering" warning, followed by intermittent outage of the power steering. The power steering cuts in and out at uncertain times, so I will be taking a corner using a lot of force on the steering wheel because the power steering isn't working, when it will suddenly start working again, and cause me to oversteer. So far this hasn't caused an accident, but it most definitely could.
ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-21
- VIN: 2C4RC1N73LR
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: We were traveling 70 mph down a steep incline and suddenly the vehicle, a Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, displayed the warning "Pull Over - Vehicle Will Shut Off Soon" and immediately the vehicle lost all motive power. I was able to pull over to the side of the road safely. This is the second time this has occurred. The first time a Chrysler dealership did not fix the problem. The code pulled was P0A43 related to the 03A recall.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-05
- VIN: 2C4RC1FG7LR
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Power steering has failed on 2 occasions while driving. Fault code was set and dealer confirmed fault codes using scan tool. Power steering returned after a few seconds of driving. This vehicle has an electric power steering pump. Fault code listed a communication failure between the power steering controller and body ecu. Dealer service department could not duplicate the problem and returned the vehicle to us saying there was nothing further they could accomplish. It is a dangerous situation losing power steering while driving. Warning icon did appear on our on screen driver display.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-14
- VIN: 2C4RC1N73LR
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: We were driving and the vehicle displayed "Pull Over, Vehicle will Shut off Soon" along with a check engine light. Fortunately we were almost home and the vehicle made it to our house before shutting off. We took it to the dealer and the dealer claimed they were not able to reproduce the issue or see any problems with the vehicle, despite it losing motive power.
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-10
- VIN: 2C4RC1BG6LR
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: The windshield fogs up when it is raining. I will drive for about 30 minutes before it fogs up. Usually the cabin air is blowing through the vents and when the windshield begins to fog I turn on the defroster. It will only work if the heat is turned way up, and the blower is set at the highest setting. When I stop at a traffic light the defroster sounds like it is still blowing but the windows fog up until I cannot see out. I have used my hand to clear a spot in front of my face and I have had to pull over to the side of the road and wait for the windshield to clear. yesterday all of the windows fogged up front and the sides. also. I took it to the dealership yesterday and after a quick look was told that I just had to turn the heat up. That is not a solution in the Summer. I have read about other Pacifica's having this same problem. It is terrifying and I don't want to drive when there is a chance of rain anymore. I did have this happen in the Winter when it was snowing a few years ago once or twice.

Congratulations on your purchase of the Pacifica Hybrid! It's great to hear that you've had such a positive experience with it so far. The smooth and quiet ride, impressive acceleration, and attractive interior all sound like wonderful features. While it's unfortunate that you've had to take it in for a few minor repairs, it's great that everything was covered under warranty and that you haven't had any major issues. It's understandable that you're disappointed with Chrysler's recommendation not to tow with the hybrid drivetrain, but it's always better to err on the side of caution. It's also great to hear that you've had success driving the Pacifica in the winter with snow tires. It's wonderful that you're able to charge the battery every night and that you've installed a Level 2 Charger in your garage. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!We absolutely love our Pacifica Hybrid! It's our go-to vehicle for a smooth and comfortable ride, especially on road trips. We believe that PHEVs are the perfect combination of technology, as they offer the benefits of an EV for daily driving and the benefits of an ICE for longer trips.

Despite its high price tag, there are many discounts available to bring the cost down to the low to mid 30's range for the hybrid. I recently went on a 2k mile road trip with my 3-year-old and they were still excited for more. I haven't had my car long enough to thoroughly check out every feature, but I absolutely loved it driving home last night on the icy road in the mountains. It hugged the road and didn't feel much different in that regard than my 5 series Beamer. The car is also very roomy and comfortable, and the heated seats are a real treat!

My wife and I absolutely loved our 2020 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. It's definitely the best combination on the market right now. We only decided to trade it in to get the new safety features that we anticipate needing next summer. Price was also a factor, and we were lucky enough to find a couple of really good deals from Chrysler.

When I first bought my car, I absolutely loved it. However, after putting 15,000 miles on it, I've noticed that it makes a loud clanging noise every time I let up on the gas and then press on it again a few seconds later. It's quite annoying and I plan on taking it to the dealer next week to get it checked out. I'm hoping they'll be able to identify the issue and fix it for me.

Looking for a spacious car that can comfortably accommodate bikes or more people? Consider the 2020 Pacifica! However, some customers have reported issues with the electronics, such as a flickering screen. While this may be a software bug, not a hardware issue, it can be frustrating. Additionally, the auto start-stop feature may only work for a limited time, and the door locks may not always function properly. If you experience any of these issues, it's important to communicate with your dealer to find a solution. Lastly, some customers have reported difficulty with the garage door opener not sending a signal from a distance. Overall, the Pacifica is a great choice for those in need of a spacious vehicle, but it's important to be aware of these potential issues.

The center console of the van does not have an enclosed space to store items, which can be inconvenient. Additionally, I was not informed that there is no spare tire, and instead, a temporary solution is provided. Despite these issues, I do appreciate the van's style. However, I preferred my previous vehicle, the town and country, which had a DVD player that played through the radio. Unfortunately, the DVD player in this van does not function in the same way, and I have to use the player directly. While these issues may not seem major, they are significant to me considering the amount I paid for the van.

Feature wise, the Pacifica ticks most boxes. However, I understand that some people may not find its design appealing. Have you considered the Grand Caravan? It may be more to your liking, and it also offers many of the same features as the Pacifica.
