1995 Chrysler New yorker problems

chrysler logo

The Chrysler New Yorker is an automobile model produced by Chrysler from 1940 until 1996, serving for several decades as either the brand's flagship model or as a junior sedan to the Chrysler Imperial, the latter during the years in which the Imperial name was used within the Chrysler lineup rather than as a standalone brand.

A trim level named the "New York Special" first appeared in 1938, while the "New Yorker" name debuted in 1939. The New Yorker helped define the Chrysler brand as a maker of upscale models that were priced and equipped to compete against upper-level models from Buick, Oldsmobile, and Mercury.

The New Yorker was Chrysler's most prestigious model throughout most of its run. Over the decades, it was available in several body styles, including sedan, coupe, and convertible.

Until its discontinuation in 1996, the New Yorker was the longest-running American car nameplate.

Common 1995 Chrysler New yorker problems

The Chrysler New Yorker, produced between 1995 and 1996, is known for several common problems that have been reported by owners. These issues are related to the transmission, engine, and electrical systems.

  1. Transmission Control Module Failure: One of the most common problems with the Chrysler New Yorker is the failure of the Transmission Control Module (TCM). The TCM is responsible for controlling the shifting of the automatic transmission. When it fails, the transmission may not shift properly, causing the car to jerk or hesitate during acceleration. This issue can be resolved by replacing the TCM, but it can be an expensive repair.
  2. Engine Issues: The Chrysler New Yorker's engine has been reported to have several issues. These include leaking oil, making knocking noises, and experiencing electrical system failures. These problems can lead to the engine running poorly or not starting at all. In some cases, the engine may need to be replaced, which can be a costly repair.
  3. Electrical System Failures: The Chrysler New Yorker's electrical system has been reported to have several issues, including the failure of the brake lights, hazard light switch, and dashboard instrument control (DIC) panel. These failures can lead to safety issues and make it difficult to operate the car. In some cases, these issues can be resolved by replacing the faulty component, but in other cases, the entire electrical system may need to be replaced.
  4. Doors and A/C Issues: The Chrysler New Yorker has also been reported to have issues with the doors and A/C. The doors may stick or not fit properly, leading to leaks and water damage. The A/C may also fail, making it difficult to keep the car cool during hot weather. These issues can be resolved by replacing the faulty components, but they can be expensive repairs.
  5. Fuel Pump and Fuel System Issues: The Chrysler New Yorker's fuel pump and fuel system have also been reported to have issues. The fuel pump may fail, leading to the car not starting or running poorly. The fuel system may also leak, leading to a loss of fuel and a decrease in performance. These issues can be resolved by replacing the faulty components, but they can be expensive repairs.

In conclusion, the Chrysler New Yorker has several common problems that have been reported by owners. These issues are related to the transmission, engine, and electrical systems. While some of these issues can be resolved with relatively simple repairs, others may require more extensive and expensive repairs. It is important for Chrysler New Yorker owners to be aware of these issues and to address them promptly to ensure the safe and reliable operation of their vehicles.

Negative 1995 Chrysler New yorker car reviews

  1. Antone Monahan 2024-11-29

I've replaced the engine, timing belt, water pump, tensioner, inner tie rods, radiator and thermostat. Unfortunately, the a/c compressor is seized, 2 dummy lights are on and can't be reset, and the fuel sending unit doesn't work. I understand that this may not sound ideal, but I want to be transparent about the car's condition. While I have fixed many of the issues, there may still be some things to address. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this car to anyone. Thank you for considering this information.

  2. Jarrell Turner 2024-09-28

I purchased this car in excellent condition with only 72,000 miles on the clock. Unfortunately, the transmission failed within 30 days. Despite this experience, I remain confident in my ability to make informed purchasing decisions and will continue to evaluate all options available to me. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

  3. Nat Lockman 2024-09-12

This car had several issues from the day I purchased it used with over 120,000 miles on it. Despite these challenges, I was confident in my ability to address them. The climate control was not functioning properly, only blowing A/C cold air through the windshield defrost vents, and the windscreen wipers only worked on high. Additionally, the gas mileage was poor and the tape deck was not functional. Unfortunately, the transmission failed after only two weeks of ownership. These issues were disappointing, but I remained confident in my ability to handle them. It is important to note that these problems were not the fault of Chrysler.

  4. Herminio Beahan 2024-04-26

This car was purchased by my daughter a couple of years ago. She had about one good year with it, but unfortunately, it has been giving her some trouble lately. The air conditioning doesn't work, the transmission has to be a certain temperature before it catches, and the paint job is not in the best condition. It's a shame because it was such a pretty car, and she was so proud of it. She paid a lot of money for it, and it's disappointing that it hasn't held up as well as she had hoped. However, we believe that with some repairs and maintenance, it can still be a reliable car. We hope to get it back to its former glory soon.

Positive 1995 Chrysler New yorker car reviews

  1. Randall Kuphal 2024-11-02

This has been a great family car. It's very comfortable for long trips and the trunk holds a huge amount of cargo. Although I did have some trouble diagnosing an issue with the A/C, it was eventually fixed after multiple repairs by 2 dealers and 1 private mechanic. The only major repair I had to do was the timing belt, all other repairs were standard.

  2. Jevon Roberts 2024-11-01

It's great to hear that you've enjoyed your New Yorker for such a long time and that you find it spacious and stylish. However, it's unfortunate to hear about the reliability issues you've experienced, including the need to replace the transmission, steering parts, front axles, and wheel bearings. It sounds like you've had to deal with a lot of repairs. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

  3. Maximus Pagac 2024-09-23

This is one of the best vehicles you could ever own! With 68,000 miles on the clock, it has been a reliable companion for me. I have only needed to perform regular maintenance on it, and it has never let me down. I am now approaching 150,000 miles, and it still runs like a dream. As someone who travels around 4,000 miles a month for work, I can attest to the comfort and spaciousness of this vehicle. It's exactly what I was looking for!

  4. Giles Herman 2024-08-24

It's one of the best cars I've had. It's very comfortable, and long trips are really a pleasure. The seats give great support. It handles very well like a sports car. A great car for long trips with plenty of room for luggage.

  5. Craig Gottlieb 2024-05-15

I've had a great experience with this car.
