2019 Kia Soul problems

kia logo

The Kia Soul is a subcompact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Kia since 2008. Often described and marketed as a crossover since its introduction, the Soul is a hatchback with a box proportion and tall roof, which are designed to maximize its interior space. Despite its SUV-like styling, the Soul was never available with all-wheel drive, instead it is exclusively a front-wheel drive vehicle.

The Soul first appeared in 2006 in the form of a concept model displayed at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The production model made its debut at the Paris Motor Show in 2008. During its introduction, Kia stated that the Soul is aimed at the North American market, and targeted towards buyers in the 18 to 35-year old range.

The second-generation model was introduced in 2013 for the 2014 model year, which featured a larger exterior and interior dimensions along with a reworked chassis, while keeping its boxy styling. The Soul is currently in its third generation, which was introduced in 2018 for the 2019 model year. Since 2014, Kia has also marketed a battery electric variant as the Soul EV.

The name "Soul" comes from the homophone of Seoul, the city that hosts Kia's headquarters.

Common 2019 Kia Soul problems

The Kia Soul, a popular subcompact crossover SUV, has had its fair share of problems reported by owners throughout the years. While the 2019 Kia Soul has a long standard warranty and is known for its slow engine, there are some common problems that owners have reported.

  1. Soft Brake Pedal: The most widespread complaint on the 2019 Kia Soul is a soft brake pedal, which has been reported within the first 5,000 miles. This issue is typically caused by air in the brake system and can be resolved by bleeding the brakes and topping off with fluid, which is typically covered under warranty.
  2. Horn Failure: Some 2019 Kia Soul owners have reported issues with the horn, which tends to fail around 1,000 miles. This issue may be caused by production run issues and can be resolved by replacing the horn assembly, which is covered under warranty for the first few years.
  3. Excessive Oil Consumption: Higher mileage Kia Soul models have reported excessive oil consumption, which is typically caused by worn-out gaskets in the engine. This issue can be resolved by changing out the gaskets, which costs around $800 due to the labor-intensive process.

These common problems on the 2019 Kia Soul are similar to some other small cars on the market, while repair costs are cheaper than some of the competition. It's important to note that there is only one recall on the 2019 Kia Soul, which covers the air bag system not deploying in an accident. Kia will update or replace the controller for free on affected models.

While the 2019 Kia Soul has its share of problems, it's important to note that a well-maintained 2019 Kia Soul can last around 200,000 miles, which is shorter than some other compact SUVs like the Toyota C-HR. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to the competition, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $387 per year. As a used 2019 Kia Soul reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history report, owners should be prepared to replace the brake master cylinder reservoir for $140, radiator hose costing $250, along with the sunroof motor, which costs around $500.

In summary, while the 2019 Kia Soul has some common problems, it's important to note that they are similar to other small cars on the market and repair costs are cheaper than some of the competition. A well-maintained 2019 Kia Soul can last around 200,000 miles, and regular annual maintenance costs are similar to the competition. It's important to be aware of the one recall on the 2019 Kia Soul and to address any common problems as they arise to ensure the longevity and safety of the vehicle.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-08
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: KNDJP3A59K7
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I was driving home from work on the highway. The check engine light came on. I made a mental note to tell my son, who is a mechanic. The engine stalled out. I had enough momentum to take the exit from the highway and turn onto a side street before the car quit rolling. A helpful dog walker informed me that it wouldn't restart because it was on fire underneath. Luckily, superman drove by and put the fire out before the vehicle or even the engine were fully engulfed. My son & friend (also a mechanic) arrived and peered at the engine... their opinion was that oil on the catalytic converter started the fire. The car has been towed to their shop while I investigate my options.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-24
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: KNDJP3A54K7
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Last year my car started knocking and there was a smoldering smell. I expected Kia to consider the function of the rod knock sensor which caused P1326code. I advised capitol kia of both knocking noises and a significant burning smell. Per an extended warranty, if the rod bearings go bad, then the engine should be replaced. Capitol Kia avoided the latter and was not fully compliant with maintaining driver's safety. Only the rod knock sensor was replaced replaced, and the sensor shows bad rod bearings over and over and over ( 3 times ) Due to incompetence at Capitol Kia, Steven's Creek Kia checked on the second event and another RBCT was done to justify it's Kia's position that the rod bearings are functional. So Far, have been sent away twice, pending a now 3rd.. The sensor was replaced 3 weeks ago and I only drove the car two weeks before a new P1326 rod bearing code was shown just last week. Well knowing that the Rod Knock senor is designed to place the car into limp mode to circumvent catastrophe, it behooves the company, on behalf of consumer safety; and, integrity to NHTSA safety, to visually inspect the rod bearings to assure consumer confidence. This is especially after multiple rod knock sensor issues. Given that Rod bearing problems can cause catastrophic injury to the driver, the NHTSA needs to mandate the company to visually inspect the bearings and show the consumer pictorial evidence of a clearly unworn rod bearing per incident, after an initial knock sensor change. All evidence as such should be faithfully tracked by Kia and the NHTSA. This is especially as Kia is using a test to indicate normal functioning for bearings assumed to be among a lot of defective bearings. It follows logically that rod bearings which pass a RBCT ( Rod Bearing Clearance Test ), after a code is found, will be functioning just short of causing a catastrophic event. It should be noted that the warranty is to maintain consumer safety not to facilitate new events by default.

STEERING,SUSPENSION,WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-10
  • VIN: KNDJP3A54K7
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,WHEELS
  • Summary: While driving on the freeway, last month mid to late Feb, My steering wheel started spinning in one direction,. The control arm on the right side of the vehicle came off of the car's right front wheel and I skidded to the side of the road at approximately 65 to 70 miles per hour. Fortunately, there was not an accident. The control arms were replaced and there were no further incidents. Regardless, given the multiple engine recalls and problems with the Kia Soul 2019 2.0 plus, I have no confidence in it's integrity to the safety standards set. This is not only related to the car, but mostly due to the behavior of the company in its continued efforts to otherwise resist compliance with engine replacement after my mechanic both viewed rod bearings seeing they may impose some risk. ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-13
  • VIN: KNDJP3A55K7
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Kia issued recall for update to knock detection system on vehicles equipped with certain GDI engines of which my vehicle was included. Following the update I noticed my engine had begun to consume oil at an excessive rate between oil changes and took in for service at dealership. They performed an oil consumption test and returned the vehicle to me stating that it fell within the perameters of normal oil consumption but was burning oil. On 10/20/23 the vehicles knock sensor detection system went off and vehicle was dropped off at the service center. Service Advisor infomred me of the flow chart procedure for the warranty process and did an update to the knock detection system, added oil and gave me the car back. A month later the car again went into limp mode and gave a code for knock detection sensor trigger. Went into service center, bearing clearance test was performed, vehicle passed, knock sensor replaced. Car was returned to me. Exactly one month later after routine oil change, vehicle is still excessively burning oil and car goes into limp mode again. The new knock sensor has triggered and vehicle enters into limp mode on the highway. Took the vehicle to the service depatment this time with an audible knock/rattle in the engine block with noticeable movement in the motor mount to which they now state is not connected to the oil consumption issue even though the vehicle was again low on oil when system was engaged. The vehicle has been consuming oil at a high rate of speed for over a year initiating the safety mechanisms on multiple occassions with the source of the issue being unresolved by the manufactuerer despite multiple documented attempts to intiated covereage under the warranty. Knock sesnor detection system has triggered multiple times with safety protocals being bypassed and faulty engine being returned to the highways putting other vehicles at risk. Currently have a case open with both Kia USA and our local Kia Dealership .

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-02
  • VIN: KNDJN2A24K7
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I am burning through oil, adding approximately 1-2 qts a week. This, in addition to my regular oil changes that I do every 3-4,000 miles. I use a synthetic blend for high mileage. I was informed that the type of engine installed (Nu 2.0 GDI engine) is the reason for the car burning oil. Twice in the last 8 months, I went to get my oil changed and was informed that I had no oil. I have yet to see the oil pressure light illuminate on my dash when my oil has been that low. My oil changes average about $80 every 3 to 4000 miles. However, in addition to the cost of my oil change, I’m having to add one to 2 quarts of oil averaging an extra $14 every week. This is starting to eat into my wallet and Kia needs to do something about their engines.

STEERING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-28
  • VIN: KNDJP3A52K7
  • Components: STEERING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I am writing upon instruction of Minnesota Attorney General Ellison's Office regarding my stolen Kia. Our 2019 Kia Soul was was purchased less than a year ago from a dealership. In the last year, the Kia Soul has been stolen twice. Both times we incurred significant expenses to repair the car's broken windows and disassembled steering column. We also experienced huge inconveniences to arrive at work since we were without the vehicle for over a month each time. To make matters worse, our insurance company increased our rates each time the car was stolen. I now fear the car will be simply uninsurable when the policy reups. The only support we have seen from Kia is receipt of an anti-theft steering lock ("club"). This device is worth about $25. It is an insult given the expenses we have incurred. We just got the car back from the autobody shop today. I remain very concerned about putting this car back on the street. We do not have a garage or can afford off street parking. The car is principally used by our son who lives in an apartment in Minneapolis. We have heard of many instances when the car's windows are smashed even when an anti-theft device is on the steering wheel. I believe a vehicle recall is the only fair alternative. I realize that Ellison's office is pursuing a class action suit with this goal. Please support that campaign and help us address this entirely impossible situation. If we try to sell this vehicle, we will lose nearly five thousand in value since it was purchased last year. We have already incurred about $3,000 in addition to insurance increases. Yet, I am sure we have any other option than selling it if our insurance either refuses to insure or jacks our rates even higher than they did last year. • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: KNDJN2A24K7
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: On April 05, 2022 I was struck head-on by a negligent driver who rounded a blind turn at a rate of speed of above sixty miles per hour. His vehicle drifted across the double yellow lines into my lane and hit three quarters of my front bumper. He was driving a four door sedan and I was driving a 2019 Kia Soul. My vehicle was lifted off of the ground, slid across his hood and roof, landed on its side and grinder against the passenger side of the car along the floor and the roof grinded the guard rail. My steering wheel air bag did not deploy, causing my head to go through the windshield. All of this is evidenced by my dual camera dash cam. The front panel of my car was crushed, which caused the side curtain airbags to deploy. Unfortunately, even though the main impact was the front bumper, the steering wheel airbag did not deploy. I suffered severe permanent injuries from this accident. I have emailed the claims department of Kia motors, but have yet to hear a reply. Thank you! I pray that no one else has to endure such a travailing experience due to a faulty product prevent vehicles from being crash worthy.

Negative 2019 Kia Soul car reviews

  1. Nathanael Harber 2024-11-09

I strongly advise against purchasing this car. It has been a very unpleasant experience for me. Despite owning it for only 41 days, I am already looking to sell it as soon as possible. The car frequently struggles to start, runs poorly, and provides a very uncomfortable ride. Thank you for considering my warning.

  2. Lamont McClure 2024-03-19

If you're taller and move the driver's seat back, you may find that the B pillar makes it difficult to enter and exit the car. I've personally experienced some discomfort in my hips from the twisting motion required. I was disappointed with the MPG, as I'm only averaging 22 with a 2.0 4 cyl engine and a very small fuel tank. Additionally, the rear seats fold forward, but the headrests can hit the front seats (which may be more of an issue for taller individuals). It's worth noting that the rear seats do not lay completely flat when folded.

  3. Bernard Weissnat 2024-02-11

The car's acceleration and fuel economy are poor, and the driver's seat lacks back support, making long-term driving tiring. Additionally, the stereo system's sound quality is subpar. It's worth noting that the windshield broke with a minor impact, so it's advisable to have insurance coverage for it if you decide to purchase this car.

  4. Jordan Bernier 2024-01-21

After owning several Toyota products, I decided to try Kia. Unfortunately, my experience was disappointing. The ride was rough, the seats were small and uncomfortable, and the paint chipped extremely easily. When I brought this up to the service manager, I received an unsatisfactory response. However, I did not give up on the Kia brand. I upgraded to a 2020 Sportage and I am extremely satisfied with my decision. The ride is smooth, the handling is great, and the mileage is just as good as the Soul. Overall, I am very impressed with the performance of my new vehicle.

I test drove the 2019 base model and was pleasantly surprised by the roominess and quality of the cabin materials at this price point. All the safety features were available on the base model, which was great. The car was fun to drive with a small, sporty steering wheel that sits low and great visibility. It had enough pep for my daily driving-around-town needs. However, I found the driver's seat to be uncomfortable due to its small size and lack of thigh support. More adjustment options with power seats may have helped. Unfortunately, my spouse also found it too small. It's worth noting that no AWD is available on any trim level. Despite my biggest reservation being the overall negative reputation of KIA dealerships and the company itself, I do love the look and feel of the car and would consider it as an extra vehicle, such as a grocery-getter. I test drove 10 vehicles (perhaps a bit OCD) and ultimately went back to the Honda CR-V.

The Kia Soul was an amazing little city car that we took to a small town in the Utah Mountains. Despite being front-wheel drive, it handled the snow and ice with ease. We took several cross-country trips and were amazed at how much we could pack into it for work projects, including heavy tools, and still get 30-35 mpg on the highway. We recently traded it in for a Kia Telluride so that we could haul a trailer when needed on our cross-country trips!

This car may have looked a bit boxy and small at first, but it turned out to be the perfect fit for me! Despite being 6'1'', I found that I had plenty of headroom and legroom, and even managed to fit two car seats in the back with ease. I was pleasantly surprised by how much cargo space it had - I was able to pack in all the gear I needed for a day at the lake with my three kids, including a cooler, chairs, towels, three float rafts, and beach toys! And when winter came around, it handled great in the snow, although it struggled a bit in deeper snow. I was impressed that I didn't need any repairs until I hit 60,000 miles, and even then it was just a small, inexpensive part that needed replacing to fix the turn signal. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend this car to others!
