The Kia Carens (Korean: 기아 카렌스) is a compact car (C-segment) manufactured by Kia since 1999, spanning over four generations, and was marketed worldwide under various nameplates, prominently as the Kia Rondo. The initial three generations had a MPV body style and were marketed worldwide, with presence in its home country South Korea, in Europe, and North America since the second-generation. The fourth-generation model took a different approach in terms of design and targeted markets, as it was developed as a "strategic model" for the Indian market. It also adopts a crossover-inspired exterior design.
The name "Carens" derives from the word "car" and "renaissance", while the name "Rondo" derives from the musical term Rondo.
First generation (RS/FJ; 1999)
Kia debuted the first generation model of Carens, the RS series in May 1999. It is based on the same platform as the Kia Sephia. A facelift was issued in 2002.
The model was discontinued in Australia in 2001, with production continuing elsewhere for the updated model which was launched in 2002.

- Summary: After hearing a popping in my front end for two days I took my car into my mechanic. He took a look at it and said he’d never seen anything like it before. My stabilizer bar had completely ripped apart from my subframe. He said the metal was as thin as a few pieces of paper and there was rust. He contacted Kia to see if there were any campaigns on my car and there was one for an anti corrosion coating that was not applied. I took my car to my local Kia dealership and they were not interested in helping and said they couldn’t even look at it for diagnosis for at least a month and even then didn’t know if they would cover it. I am 38 weeks pregnant and have two small children and my mechanic said it was a major safety issue to drive it as is. I contacted Kia corporate and they informed me that it would be covered but I would have to get it diagnosed at a dealership first or pay for it out of pocket. I’ve contacted every dealership within two hours of me and they have all said they can’t help or haven’t gotten back to me. Kia says they can’t be of more help because each dealership is independently owned.

SERPENTINE BELT SCREECHES AND ALL COMES BACK LIKE NOTHING HAPPENED. THIS CONDITION ONLY HAPPENS IN THE RAIN. WE REPLACED THE SERPENTINE BELT AND IT WAS OK FOR A FULL YEAR AND NOW ITS BACK AGAIN. LOCAL REPAIR SHOP REPLACED THE BELT. EXACTLY ONE YEAR LATER THE LOCAL REPAIR SHOP CANNOT REENACT THE PROBLEM. THEY LITERALLY DOUSED THE BELT WITH WATER TO TEST THE STEERING LOSS. KIA CUSTOMER SERVICE CANNOT FIND ANY COMMON ISSUES WITH THE VEHICLE. VERY DANGEROUS AS THE CAR DOES THIS RIGHT AFTER HITTING A SMALL PUDDLE.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2008 Kia Rondo.

- Summary: Kia Motors Corporation (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2007-2010 Rondo, model year 2007-2011 Sedona, Sorento and Sportage, model year 2010-2011 Soul, model year 2008-2011 Optima, model year 2010 Forte, model year 2007-2009 Amanti, and model year 2009 Borrego vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Kia recalled 623,658 model year 2007-2010 Rondo and Sportage, model year 2007-2011 Sorento, model year 2007 Sedona, model year 2010-2011 Soul, and model year 2011 Optima vehicles. In September 2013, Kia informed the agency that it was adding an additional 356,719 vehicles to this campaign. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 980,377. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock feature preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
- Consequence: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of PARK without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Kia will send an interim notification to owners in May 2013. When parts are available, owners will receive a second notification and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's recall campaign number is SC098.

IF THE CLOCK SPRING CONTACT ASSEMBLY BECOMES DAMAGED, THE DRIVER'S AIR BAG ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT WILL EXPERIENCE A HIGH RESISTANCE CONDITION POTENTIALLY CAUSING THE DRIVER'S AIR BAG TO NOT DEPLOY.
- Consequence: IF THE CLOCK SPRING DEVELOPS HIGH RESISTANCE, IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, THE DRIVERS AIR BAG WILL NOT DEPLOY AND WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PROPERLY PROTECT THE DRIVER, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURIES.
- Remedy: KIA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE VEHICLE'S AIR BAG CLOCK SPRING CONTACT ASSEMBLY, FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 11, 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT KIA CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-333-4542.

- Consequence: UNUSUALLY SEVERE IMPAIRMENT WHILE DRIVING COULD EXPOSE THE DRIVER TO THE RISK OF A CRASH.

I really enjoyed my Kia Rondo. It was perfect for my family, especially with the 3rd seat option that we used on many occasions, saving us time and energy by not having to take 2 cars. I would have loved to buy a second one, but unfortunately, they discontinued the model and didn't offer a hybrid version. Overall, I have had a great experience with Kia and never had any problems with my Rondo. It ran beautifully.

This is my second Kia. I previously owned a Sedona, which had a few problems that the dealer took care of with no hassle. I recently drove the Rondo and was impressed with its ride and the 2.4 4-cylinder engine. The interior is spacious and it has better gas mileage than the Sedona. It's great to see how far Kia has come!

You've had the car for exactly one year and driven almost 17000 miles without a single problem. It's been great for taking the kids to college, with plenty of rear space and a spacious cargo area for holding grocery bags. The V6 is perfectly matched to the car and the visibility is great. In my opinion, the KIA is a good choice, especially when compared to Honda, Saturn, Mitsubishi, and Mazda. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

We did some research on the Kia Rondo. I love how it handles! It's a great value for your money. I really enjoy driving it! It's very rugged and has great features. As others have mentioned, I'm not a huge fan of the exterior design. It looks more like a van than a crossover, as Kia likes to call it.

When it comes to choosing a vehicle, most people prioritize practical needs such as gas consumption, space, highway performance, handling in city driving, and price. I have been driving this car since February and I must say, even though I had never heard of it until 9 days before I bought it, it has exceeded my expectations in all practical aspects. With all seats down, it can be used like a cargo van, and it can carry up to 7 passengers. It is surprisingly fast on the highway, cruising at triple digit speeds while remaining quiet as a luxury sedan inside. The seats are also incredibly comfortable, with the best seat entry I have ever experienced. The ABS and ESC make handling smooth and easy. Although it may not be suitable for drag racing, it is perfect for everyday use.

I recently purchased an 08 KIA Rondo from a dealership's used lot for under 10k. It had only 20,000 miles on it and looked almost brand new. I am really enjoying driving it, especially the extra kick that the v6 provides. This gives it an advantage over other crossover wagon type vehicles. It has all the usual features such as power windows, power doors, am/fm/cd, ac/heat. The Rondo is incredibly spacious in the back, making it perfect for carrying kids, groceries, camping gear, and more. Overall, I am pleasantly surprised with this ride!

Our car trip from FL to CA was an adventure. We took I-10 going to CA and I-40 coming back, stopping at the Grand Canyon along the way. Despite turning off the AC for more than half the trip to help with the hills, we still managed to average 19 MPG on the highway. However, we did encounter some issues with the seats and overall workmanship of the car. While we believe Kia had a great idea with this model, improvements in gas mileage, performance, and quality of workmanship are necessary for it to truly be a great car.

At 60,000 miles, it is recommended to replace the timing belt and water pump. Unfortunately, Kia has not yet addressed the issue of the AC condenser dripping directly onto the front subframe, causing rust to develop. However, I have found out that fixing the AC issue would have been inexpensive. If you own a Rondo, you may experience this issue. Kia acknowledges that there is a rust problem due to high salt and offers an undercoat recall. It is important to note that the Rondo currently only has 64,000 miles on it. It is clear that the car was made with cheap materials, but there are solutions available to address these issues.

I recently purchased a 2008 Rondo, but unfortunately, it did not meet my expectations. During the test drive, I was unable to identify some of the flaws due to the city traffic. However, during the long drive home, I noticed an annoying sound at the driver's window, which was caused by air coming in. Additionally, the car felt unstable and 'floaty' on the road, making me feel less in control. The 4-cylinder engine was also quite loud, which made me feel uneasy. As a result, I have decided to return the car and request a refund. Safety is my top priority, and I do not feel secure in this vehicle.
