The Chevrolet Suburban is a series of SUVs built by Chevrolet since the 1935 model year. The longest-used automobile nameplate in the world, the Chevrolet Suburban is currently in its twelfth generation, introduced for 2021. Beginning life as one of the first metal-bodied station wagons, the Suburban is the progenitor of the modern full-size SUV, combining a wagon-style body with the chassis and powertrain of a pickup truck. Alongside its Advance Design, Task Force, and C/K predecessors, the Chevrolet Silverado currently shares chassis and mechanical commonality with the Suburban and other trucks.

Traditionally one of the most profitable vehicles sold by General Motors, the Suburban has been marketed through both Chevrolet and GMC for nearly its entire production. Along sharing the Suburban name with Chevrolet, GMC has used several nameplates for the model line; since 2000, the division has marketed it as the GMC Yukon XL. Since 2003, Cadillac has marketed the Suburban as the Cadillac Escalade ESV. During the 1990s, GM Australia marketed right-hand drive Suburbans under the Holden brand.

.The Suburban is sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, Chile, Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Peru, Philippines, and the Middle East (except Israel), while the Yukon XL is sold only in North America (exclusive to the United States, Canada, and Mexico) and the Middle East territories (except Israel).

A 2018 iSeeCars.com study identified the Chevrolet Suburban as the car that is driven the most each year. A 2019 iSeeCars.com study named the Chevrolet Suburban the second-ranked longest-lasting vehicle. In December 2019, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce unveiled a Hollywood Walk of Fame star for the Suburban, noting that the Suburban had been in "1,750 films and TV shows since 1952."

This problem is so prevalent that it is the most-reported problem for the 2007 model year, with an average cost to fix of $5,000 and an average mileage of 55,000 miles. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn piston rings, valve guides, or cylinder walls. Other Issues:
While the search results did not provide specific details about other common problems with the 1993 Chevrolet Suburban, some general issues that can affect this model include electrical problems, brake issues, and suspension problems. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TAKEN TO MANY CHEVROLET DEALERSHIPS AND INDEPENDENT SHOPS FOR REPAIR AND BEEN INSPECTED OR REPAIRED WITH COMPLETE BRAKE REBUILDS WITH ABSOLUTELY NO IMPROVEMENT IN STOPPING ABILITIES. THIS MODEL VEHICLE SHOULD ABSOLUTELY HAVE BEEN RECALLED SHORTLY AFTER MANUFACTURE. THERE IS SO MUCH DOCUMENTATION THAT THESE VEHICLES HAVE THIS PROBLEM THAT THIS AGENCY SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF NOT FORCING A RECALL FOR REPAIRS OR COMPLETE REDESIGN OF THE BRAKING SYSTEMS. THE MINOR RECALL AND"FIX" OF THE BRAKE-BOOSTER OUTPUT ROD WERE A JOKE AND NEVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN ALLOWED AS A FIX. THE EXCUSE CHEVROLET USES THAT IT IS A "BRAKE PEDAL FEEL" THAT IS THE PROBLEM IS INEXCUSABLE AND IRRESPONSIBLE. SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2003-08-15
  • VIN: 1GBEC16K8PJ
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: MY SUBURBAN HAS DEVELOPED A PECULIAR PROBLEM THAT HAS LEFT EVEN THE DEALERSHIPS COMPLETELY CLUELESS!!! THE ENGINE HEATS UP TO ABOUT 180 F (STILL LESS THAN THE MID POINT ON THE GUAGE) AFTER A COUPLE OF HOURS OF DRIVING -- THIS IS QUITE NORMAL. IF WE STOP AND TURN THE ENGINE OFF, THE VEHICLE WILL NOT START! WE HAVE TO WAIT A COUPLE OF HOURS WHILE THE ENGINE COOLS OFF TO ABOUT 160 F, AND IT STARTS UP JUST FINE. WE ONLY NOTICED THIS SINCE WE WERE ON A LONG CROSS COUNTRY DRIVE. THE PROBLEM IS ENTIRELY PREDICTABLE, AND WE HAD TO PLAN ON TWO HOUR STOPS DURING OUR TRIP. WE EVEN DROVE STRAIGHT TO A DEALERSHIP IN RALEIGH AFTER STRAIGHT 6 HOUR DRIVES SO THAT THEY COULD SEE AND DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM -- BUT THEY WERE COMPLETELY STUMPED. I WOULD LIKE CHEVROLET TO HELP DIAGNOSE AND FIX THIS PROBLEM. THE ABS MODULE FAILED WITHOUT ANY PRIOR WARNING. ONE MOMENT THE BREAKS WERE FINE, THE NEXT WE WERE FLOORING THE BREAK PEDAL AND THE ABS LIGHT WAS ON. THE MECHANICS HAD TO GO THROUGH SEVERAL ATTEMPTS AT REPLACING THE UNIT ($1200 FOR THE UNIT ITSELF). THIS PROBLEM SOUNDS EXACTLY LIKE THE ISSUE INVESTIGATED IN 1992-1995 SUBURBANS. I AM SURPRISED THAT THE RECALL WAS LIMITED TO THE LIGHTER SUVS ONLY -- A DECISION BASED ON COST (MOST PROBABLY). IT STANDS TO REASON THAT THE PROBLEM WOULD BE MORE CRITICAL IN HEAVIER VEHICLES.

Negative 1993 Chevrolet Suburban car reviews

  1. London Spinka 2025-01-04

I've had some trouble with major components breaking down and requiring frequent repairs. It can be quite expensive to work on and the parts are also costly. I highly recommend purchasing an extended warranty and finding a good mechanic. Personally, I don't have the patience for it and will be looking to buy a Toyota or Honda next.

  2. Jed Langosh 2024-11-22

You have the best truck on the road! I totally understand why you wouldn't want to trade it for anything, except maybe a new one.

  3. Julio Tromp 2024-03-28

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share some information about my SUV. I bought it back in 2001 from the original owner when it had 118K miles on it. Since then, I've put in a new transmission at 156K and taken care of other minor maintenance items. The engine still runs strong and it's been a great vehicle for hauling all of our stuff on vacations. Plus, it gets decent gas mileage for a large SUV. Of course, like with any GM vehicle, there have been some fit and finish issues with the cheap plastics and door panels. But overall, I'm really happy with it. Although I'll eventually replace it with something similar, I'm definitely going to miss it when the time comes.

  4. Leonard Stehr 2024-02-04

Awesome truck! It's the best vehicle I've ever owned. I purchased it in '04 with about 225K miles and it's still going strong at 265K miles. Although I've had some cooling issues with the radiator, heater core, etc., this truck is a tank and I absolutely love it. The only thing I would trade it for is a newer one. With a K&N filter and flowmaster exhaust, I get 20mpg on the highway! That's a Chevrolet for you!

I totally understand why - it's an awesome car. The only downside is that it gets 12mpg in the city. But hey, every car has its quirks, right?

We're so happy to share that our Suburban has been an absolute champ! With over 218,000 miles on it, we haven't had to make any major repairs. The engine and transmission have only needed routine service, which we've been diligent about. Living at the 8,000 foot elevation level of the Colorado Rockies, we can't tell you how unbeatable this vehicle is in the snow. We just wanted to take a moment to say thank you Chevy for creating such a fantastic vehicle!

I've always been a fan of Ford Broncos, but this truck is amazing! With four kids, I need a lot of space, and this truck definitely delivers. And snow? No problem at all! This truck can tow just about anything without even breaking a sweat.

I got my license and wasn't really looking forward to driving 'the beast'. However, after about 3 weeks, it grew on me and I must say, it's been the greatest truck ever! Although gas can be a bit of a pain, it has a 42-gallon tank which means I can fill it up on Sunday and drive for miles. I even took it mudding (2WD) and it did just fine. It can be a slight pain in the snow, but once you get used to it, sandbags aren't even needed. The performance is solid, but I could use 15-20 more horses and lb-ft each. Having front and mid bench is awesome, and having the back open is even better. It rides great on long trips, so much so that I've gone to pick up friends 150 miles away at school just to drive it long distance. Overall, I'm really glad I was given it, and I have no plans to get rid of it anytime soon, even with 160k on it!

I really love this truck! It has been with my family since 1995 and has been a reliable companion on many weekend trips and week-long vacations. It has plenty of room for luggage and is great for carrying full sheets of drywall. Maintenance has been below average and it only uses about .5 quart of oil between changes every 3000-4000 miles. The AC has been recharged twice and is currently on its third summer since the last recharge, and it's blowing very cold. The shocks were replaced at 120000 and it rides and handles great. This Suburban is a smooth cruiser at 65.
