1996 Chevrolet Suburban problems
The Chevrolet Suburban is a series of SUVs built by Chevrolet since the 1935 model year. The longest-used automobile nameplate in the world, the Chevrolet Suburban is currently in its twelfth generation, introduced for 2021. Beginning life as one of the first metal-bodied station wagons, the Suburban is the progenitor of the modern full-size SUV, combining a wagon-style body with the chassis and powertrain of a pickup truck. Alongside its Advance Design, Task Force, and C/K predecessors, the Chevrolet Silverado currently shares chassis and mechanical commonality with the Suburban and other trucks.
Traditionally one of the most profitable vehicles sold by General Motors, the Suburban has been marketed through both Chevrolet and GMC for nearly its entire production. Along sharing the Suburban name with Chevrolet, GMC has used several nameplates for the model line; since 2000, the division has marketed it as the GMC Yukon XL. Since 2003, Cadillac has marketed the Suburban as the Cadillac Escalade ESV. During the 1990s, GM Australia marketed right-hand drive Suburbans under the Holden brand.
.The Suburban is sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, Chile, Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Peru, Philippines, and the Middle East (except Israel), while the Yukon XL is sold only in North America (exclusive to the United States, Canada, and Mexico) and the Middle East territories (except Israel).
A 2018 iSeeCars.com study identified the Chevrolet Suburban as the car that is driven the most each year. A 2019 iSeeCars.com study named the Chevrolet Suburban the second-ranked longest-lasting vehicle. In December 2019, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce unveiled a Hollywood Walk of Fame star for the Suburban, noting that the Suburban had been in "1,750 films and TV shows since 1952."

Common 1996 Chevrolet Suburban problems
The 1996 Chevrolet Suburban is known for its spacious interior and towing capacity, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners:
- Excessive Oil Consumption: This is a widespread problem in the 2009 Chevrolet Suburban, with an average cost to fix of $5,000 and an average mileage of 55,000 miles. The engine may consume more oil than usual, leading to frequent oil changes and potential engine damage.
- Transmission Problems: One common issue reported by owners of the 1996 Chevrolet Suburban is transmission problems. For instance, while in drive, the vehicle may shift once, then at or around 20-25 miles per hour, the engine will race, but the transmission will not shift. This could be due to a variety of issues, including a faulty vehicle speed sensor, a problem with the transmission itself, or issues with the adjustments or system pressures.
- Air Conditioning (A/C) Stopped Working: This is a common problem in the 2015 Chevrolet Suburban, with an average cost to fix of $1,100 and an average mileage of 66,000 miles. The A/C may stop working altogether, leading to uncomfortable driving conditions, especially during hot weather.
- Engine Problems: Engine problems are a common issue in the Chevrolet Suburban, with the 2007 model year having the most overall complaints. The most-reported problem is excessive oil consumption in the 2007 Chevrolet Suburban.
- Seat Belts: Some owners have reported issues with the seat belts in the 1996 Chevrolet Suburban. The seat belts may not retract properly or may become stuck, leading to safety concerns.
While these are some of the most commonly reported problems with the 1996 Chevrolet Suburban, it's important to note that not all vehicles of this model year will experience these issues. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent or address these problems before they become more serious. Additionally, it's always a good idea to consult with a certified mechanic or dealership for any specific concerns or issues with your vehicle.

- VIN: 3GNGK26J5TG
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1996 CHEVROLET SUBURBAN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 20 MPH WHILE TOWING A TRAILER, THE TRAILER BRAKES MALFUNCTIONED CAUSING THE WHEELS TO LOCK AND BLOWING THE TRAILER FRONT PASSENGER SIDE TIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE STEERING COLUMN HARNESS WAS UNDERSIDE CAUSING ONE OF THE WIRES TO BURN OUT. AS A RESULT, THE WIRING HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 140,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 250,000. SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-11-01
- VIN: 1GNFK16R6TJ
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: NOVEMBER 2010, I WENT TO STOP, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. I WAS ABLE TO STOP USING THE PARKING BRAKE, BUT WAS VERY CLOSE TO REAR-ENDING A CARLOAD OF PEOPLE. I HAD THE TRUCK TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP. THE MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT THE FRONT BRAKE LINE HAD RUSTED OUT BECAUSE IT WAS MOUNTED AT THE FACTORY TO THE FRONT AXLE ON THIS 4-WHEEL DRIVE TRUCK CAUSING IT TO VIBRATE AND COLLECT DEBRIS ON IT LEADING TO A PREMATURE FAILURE DUE TO RUST. IN DECEMBER 2012, AGAIN WHEN I WENT TO STOP FROM ABOUT 55 MPH ON THE FREEWAY, THE BRAKE PEDAL AGAIN WENT ALMOST COMPLETELY TO THE FLOOR, BUT AGAIN I WAS ABLE TO STOP BEFORE HITTING ANOTHER VEHICLE BY USING THE PARKING BRAKE AND RUNNING UP ON THE SHOULDER OF THE FREEWAY. THE MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT THIS TIME THE REAR BRAKE LINE HAD RUSTED OUT AT THE "T - INTERSECTION" WHERE THE BRAKE LINE RUNS FROM THE FRONT MASTER CYLINDER TO THE REAR AXLE AND SPLITS INTO 2 LINES AT THE T INTERSECTION. THE MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT THIS WAS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM ON THESE TRUCKS AS IT WAS A BAD DESIGN, BECAUSE THE T LAYS IN A RECESSED HOLDER ATTACHED TO THE REAR AXLE, ALLOWING DIRT, SALT AND WETNESS TO ACCUMULATE IN THIS AREA AND CAUSE PREMATURE RUST AND FAILURE OF THE BRAKE LINES. THIRD, LAST WEEK, WHILE DRIVING, I NOTICED A RAW GAS SMELL AND STOPPED THE VEHICLE. AGAIN I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED AS GAS WAS POURING OUT OF THE FUEL LINE BY THE GAS FILTER ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE REAR WHEEL. THIS WAS TOWED TO A DIFFERENT MECHANIC'S REPAIR SHOP WHO AGAIN SHOWED ME THAT THE METAL FUEL LINE HAD RUSTED OUT DUE TO ITS BEING MOUNTED TO THE FRAME RAIL, CAUSING SALT, DIRT AND DEBRIS TO ACCUMULATE THERE ALSO. HE WARNED ME THAT THESE TRUCKS FREQUENTLY CATCH FIRE WHEN THESE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL INJECTION LINES RUST OUT. HE SAID HE HAD SEEN 5 OF THESE TRUCKS BURNED IN JUST THE LAST 2 YEARS AT HIS SMALL SHOP.PLEASE HELP. THESE TRUCKS ARE INHERENTLY DANGEROUSLY DESIGNED TO FAIL. *TR
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-08-31

- Summary: TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1996 CHEVROLET SUBURBAN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE REVERSING FROM A DRIVEWAY, THE FUEL PUMP OVER HEATED, MELTED, AND DESTROYED THE CONNECTORS. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BY THE CONTACT AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 240,000.
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2011-09-10
- VIN: 3GNGK16F6TG
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: WHILE DRIVING THROUGH THE NEIGHBORHOOD AT 35 MPH, THE POSTED SPEED, WE LOST BRAKE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE WHEN THE SERVICE BRAKE WAS APPLIED APPROACHING AN INTERSECTION WITH A STOP SIGN. WE WERE UNABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE WHICH ENTERED THE INTERSECTION AND PASSED ALL OF THE WAY THROUGH IT. THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS TO THE FLOOR AND NOT WORKING PROPERLY. FORTUNATELY FOR ALL THERE WERE NO OTHER VEHICLES ( OR PEDESTRIANS) IN THIS INTERSECTION AS WE WOULD HAVE CERTAINLY HIT THEM. IT APPEARS THE BRAKE LINE(S) ON THE K2500 SUBURBAN HAVE RUSTED THROUGH IN AN AREA THAT IS DIFFICULT TO SEE WHERE THEY GO THROUGH THE FRAME AND BLEW OUT AT THIS CRITICAL MOMENT. THE DEALER IS UNWILLING TO TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE REPAIR AS THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF FACTORY WARRANTY. WHEN WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE THEY DID NOT TELL US THE BRAKES COULD ONLY BE RELIED UPON FOR THE TIME THE TRUCK IS UNDER WARRANTY. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A SERIOUS, POSSIBLY DEADLY OUTCOME SINCE WE TOW A TRAILER WITH THE TRUCK ON THE HIGHWAY. I UNDERSTAND THIS IS ACTUALLY A COMMON OCCURRENCE WITH THESE CHEVROLET AND GMC TRUCKS. WHY IS THERE NO RECALL GIVEN THE POTENTIAL DEADLY POSSIBILITIES? TOYOTA WAS IN THE NEWS ABOUT THEIR UNEXPECTED ACCELERATION ISSUE BUT WE HAVE HEARD NOTHING ABOUT THIS UNEXPECTED LOSS OF BRAKING ISSUE? WHY IS THAT? IS NOT BEING ABLE TO STOP NOT A PROBLEM FOR THE NHTSA? *TR
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-08-20
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1996 CHEVROLET SUBURBAN. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 55 MPH WHEN THE TRANSMISSION FAILED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 179,000.

MANUFACTURER EXTENDED WARRANTY TO 120,000 MILES, HAS CONTINUED BEYOND WARRANTY PERIOD AND IS A SOURCE OF SAFETY CONCERN. THIS HAS OCCURRED ON INTERSTATE HIGHWAYS, IN THE MIDDLE OF BUSY (HIGH SPEED INTERSECTIONS). DEALER PERFORMED NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS TO FIX PROBLEM, BUT THEY CONTINUED. I HAVE HAD THIS VEHICLE TO THE DEALER MORE TIMES THAN I CAN COUNT. I HAVE HAD ASSISTANCE FROM OTHER PROFESSIONAL SOURCES (AFTER THE WARRANTY PERIOD WAS OVER AND WAS CONVINCED THAT DEALER/MFG. COULD NOT OR WOULD NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. I HAVE REPLACED FUEL INJECTION PUMP 2 TIMES MINIMUM, HAVE REPLACED PMD/FSD AT LEAST 5 TIMES, REPLACED AUXILIARY/LIFT PUMP TWO TIMES, HAVE DRAINED AND CLEANED FUEL TANK 2 TIMES. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2006-01-19
- VIN: 3GNFK16R7TG
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: THE BATTERY CABLES LEAK ACID, . WHEN THE BATTERY BECOMES CORRODED, THERE IS NO POWER TO THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER HAS TOLD ME THAT THE BATTERY CABLES ARE BAD, WHICH WE HAVE REPLACED, AND THE PROBLEM CONTINUES. WE HAVE HAD THE BATTERIES (REPLACED MORE THAN ONE) CHECKED, AND THEY ARE FINE. WE HAVE HAD THE POSTS REPLACED, AND THE PROBLEM GETS WORSE. THE LATEST, (IM STRANDED RIGHT NOW) SEEMS TO BE THE WORST YET. AT FIRST WHEN THIS STARTED HAPPENING, IT WAS A COUPLE OF MONTHS APART, NOW ITS EVERY WEEK. ALSO WHEN IT STARTED THE CABLES WHERE REALLY CORRODED BEFORE THE ENGINE QUIT. NOW THEY CAN BE WIPED OFF WITH A DRY TOWEL. ALSO, THE A/C HAS STOPPED WORKING DUE TO CRACKS IN HOSES. (FROM THE ACID) BEING AS I LIVE IN TEXAS, EVEN IF THE TRUCK IS RUNNING I CANT DRIVE IT IN THE SUMMER, EVEN IF WE FIX THE HOSES IT HAPPENS AGAIN. WHEN I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALER THE LAST TIME, THEY TOLD ME THE BATTERY WAS FINE, BUT I NEEDED TO SPEND 400.00 TO HAVE THE CABLES REPLACED AGAIN. HOW IS THIS PROBLEM REALLY CORRECTED. TALKING TO OTHER PEOPLE WHO HAD SUBURBANS I HAVE FOUND THAT A NUMBER OF THEM HAVE HAD VEHICLE FIRES DUE TO THE ACID PROBLEM!!! HAVING CHILDREN IN THE CAR, IM TERRIFIED TO DRIVE MY TRUCK. (WHEN IT EVEN STARTS) I CANNOT SELL IT TO SOMEONE ELSE AND PUT THEM IN DANGER. THE FUEL PUMP HAS FAILED. WE WERE TOLD THAT WE HAVE TO KEEP A 1/4 TANK OF GAS IN THE TRUCK. WELL IT IS GOING OUT AGAIN AND I KEEP IT FULL! ALSO, SOMETHING TO DO W/ THE ABS BOOSTER BEING BAD. WELL MY BRAKES ARE FAILING AGAIN. (LESS THAN A YEAR LATER) THE PADS ARE FINE. THE ACID LEAKING HAS CAUSED DAMAGE TO OUR DRIVEWAYS, NOT TO MENTION THE KIDS AND ANIMALS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD GETTING INTO THE ACID ON THE GROUND. PLEASE SEND ME ANY INFO THAT MIGHT HELP ME. IM AM GOING TO CONTACT THE DEALER AND TALK TO THEM AGAIN ABOUT THE INFORMATION THE I HAVE FOUND, RE: IM NOT THE ONLY ONE THIS IS HAPPENING TO. *NM

I bought my 96 used w/140K nine years ago, and I still love it more than ever, even though it now has 205K. Unfortunately, rust is winning the battle on this beloved vehicle. It has been the best vehicle I've ever owned, and I've owned quite a few. Also unfortunate is the exorbitant sticker price for a new one.

The car has been used mostly for highway driving, but it still rides well for a large truck. We drove the truck from NYC to the Great Smokey Mountains and we couldn't imagine making the trip in another car. Ride is a little stiff now, and the suspension isn't what it used to be, but after 7+ years of reliable driving, I really can't complain. If my wife would let me, I would buy Suburbans for the rest of my life.

After 10 years, this truck has proven that America can build a quality vehicle. Other than a few brake jobs, 2 sets of tires, 1 tune-up, and 1 fuel pump, this truck has been a reliable workhorse. It has pulled a 25ft travel trailer, a 16ft boat, a 23ft cuddy cabin boat, and a dual jet ski trailer. It even pulled my trailer through a muddy field after we got caught in a thunderstorm that washed out the dirt road. In other words, this truck has been put to work and has never let me down. It wasn't just used as a suburban assault vehicle, it worked hard and partied twice as hard without showing any signs of wear and tear. Even after all these years, it still shines and has no rust, despite living outside in harsh Illinois winters. I would put my 10-year-old truck up against any new import SUV. It can out run, out tow, and outperform any off-road vehicle head-on.

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your Suburban! It sounds like it has served you well with its many options and impressive mileage. The spacious interior and comfortable seats make it a great choice for long road trips. I understand your desire for a fold-away 3rd row seat, and it's great to hear that you love the ample cargo space. The elevated seating position and easy access are also big pluses. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

We've had a few issues with the vehicle's alternator and battery, but those problems have been resolved. Unfortunately, we did experience a breakdown in the California desert and a few local incidents with my wife. Currently, the alternator is showing signs of failure. We did have to get some acid damage repaired shortly after purchase, but other than that, our experience has been pretty good. We travel from South Texas to Colorado every year and have had good luck, except for the one breakdown. The A/C seems to only blow on the passenger side vents. Overall, it's a great large vehicle, despite some reliability issues.

If you're considering buying a Chevy Suburban, I would suggest looking into other options. Unfortunately, Chevy's quality has declined in recent years. One issue I experienced was the intake manifold gasket starting to leak at around 75-80,000 miles. This problem left me stranded in a small town called La Junta in eastern Colorado. Although I paid $800 to have the gaskets replaced, they blew again after only 8,000 miles. Thankfully, a skilled mechanic was able to fix the issue using third-party FelPro gaskets, and I haven't had any issues in the last 40,000 miles.

We affectionately call our 96 2WD 'Old Leaky'. Despite being the original owners and having 110K miles, it still looks and runs great! However, it has had its fair share of trips to the shop. Here's a rundown of the repairs: four alternators, one water pump, one A/C compressor (costing $1000), multiple A/C leaks, an intake manifold gasket (costing $800), a power steering leak, multiple coolant leaks from the network of connections on the heater core hoses, multiple instances of coolant leaks from quick connectors, and multiple brake refits (every 12K miles). Unfortunately, the transmission gave up the ghost at 70K miles (costing $2600) and most recently, we had to deal with a significant oil leak from the timing chain cover (costing $400).

This vehicle was perfect for our large family. We often go on vacations or camping trips with our four kids and lots of luggage, toys, and baby gear. While it was a bit of a hassle to get into the third row, especially with a car seat in the way, we were able to fit two car seats with room for another person in the middle row. Although the kids had to crawl over the second row seat back to get to the third row, it was manageable. The vehicle always started, but we did experience some minor issues such as the rear barn door catches and various control knobs breaking easily.

Just the right size for your needs and fun to drive. It's great that you have a custom interior made by an aftermarket company, but it's a shame that the factory GM parts are cheap plastic. Overall, it's a very nice vehicle, although it's not fair to compare it to a Navigator as they are in completely different leagues. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
