Ford Windstar 1995 problems
The Ford Windstar (later the Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey) is a minivan that was produced and sold by Ford. The replacement for the Ford Aerostar, the Windstar adopted the front-wheel drive configuration of the Chrysler minivans. From the 1995 to 2007 model years, three generations of the model line were sold, with the final generation renamed as the Ford Freestar.
Unrelated to the Nissan-developed Mercury Villager, the Windstar was marketed without a Lincoln-Mercury counterpart. As part of the 2004 launch of the Ford Freestar, Mercury introduced its first Ford-produced minivan in a revival of the Mercury Monterey nameplate.
Following a decline in sales across the minivan segment in the mid-2000s, the Freestar and Monterey were discontinued after the 2007 model year with no direct replacement. In North America, the model line was functionally matched by the 7-passenger 2008 Ford Taurus X wagon/CUV; in Mexico, the Freestar was replaced by the Ford Transit/Tourneo. In 2014, Ford reentered the segment as the Ford Transit Connect compact MPV gained 7-passenger seating in North America.
During its production the Ford Windstar/Freestar and the Mercury Monterey were sourced from Oakville Assembly (Oakville, Ontario). In total, 1,984,232 were produced (1,704,786 Windstars, 246,493 Freestars, and 32,953 Montereys).

THIS CORROSION COULD ULTIMATELY LEAD TO A LEAK IN THE BRAKE LINE.
- Consequence: LEAKAGE OF BRAKE FLUID WILL RESULT IN BRAKE LIGHT ACTIVATION. EXTENDED STOPPING DISTANCE COULD ALSO RESULT, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE BRAKE LINE FOR CORROSION AND CLEARANCE CONDITIONS. A BRAKE LINE THAT IS NOT CORRODED WILL BE REPOSITIONED. A BRAKE LINE THAT IS CORRODED OR LEAKING WILL BE REPLACED WITH A NYLON COATED BRAKE LINE AND SECURED USING THREE RETAINING CLIPS TO ASSURE CLEARANCE FROM THE INSULATOR. TEARING OF THE BOND BETWEEN THE INNER AND OUTER HOOD PANELS DURING MINOR FRONT END COLLISIONS CAN RESULT IN A GAP AT THE LEADING EDGE OF THE HOOD. AIR FORCED BETWEEN THE INNER AND OUTER PANELS CAN PRODUCE ENOUGH PRESSURE TO FORCE THE OUTER PANEL UPWARD.
- Consequence: THIS CONDITION CAN RESULT IN TOTAL SEPARATION OF THE OUTER HOOD PANEL.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE HOOD AREA FOR ANY DAMAGE ALONG THE LEADING EDGE OF THE HOOD. IF THERE IS ANY EVIDENCE OF BOND SEPARATION, THE HOOD WILL BE REPLACED. IF THERE IS NO EVIDENCE OF BOND SEPARATION, ADDITIONAL ADHESIVE WILL BE APPLIED BETWEEN THE INNER AND OUTER HOOD PANELS.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my Windstar. I bought it back in Mid-97 with 70K miles and have been driving it ever since. It now has over 170K miles and I'm happy to report that it still gets 21MPG! I always check the mileage every time I refuel and use it as a diagnostic alert, just in case. Since we live in the country, we mostly drive on the highway. I've been doing all the minor maintenance myself, such as tires, brakes, tune-ups, oil changes, and so on. I'm happy to say that I haven't had any major problems with the head gasket, transmission, or brakes. Everything still works perfectly fine! However, I'm planning on trading it in for ANOTHER WINDSTAR pretty soon. I've been so pleased with it and I'm excited to get another one. Thank you for listening to my story!

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience as the original owners of a Ford Windstar. Despite the '95 Windstar being poorly rated, we've had a superb ownership experience with our vehicle, having driven it for 52,000 miles. This is largely due to the excellent service we received from our dealer, who promptly took care of the few minor issues we encountered at no cost to us. These included a missing storage tray under the passenger seat upon delivery, the ABS brake light turning on recall, and the head gasket recall. Overall, we've had a great experience with our Windstar!

I'm really impressed with this vehicle! It has never left me stranded on the side of the road, even after all these miles. So far, I've only had to replace the tires and brakes. We're coming up on a new belt and thermostat, and I may give it some new shocks, but overall, I'm really pleased with it.

The vehicle drives like a small car, but has the comfortable ride of a luxury sedan. The interior quad seating is cozy and the separate air conditioning adds to the overall comfort. Ford has the best air conditioning on the market, which keeps the vehicle downright chilly. It's a great travel vehicle with ample rear space and a roof rack if needed. The mirrored tinted windows are a plus. It gets 24 mpg on the road, even when loaded with a family running the air conditioning full blast. It's a good buy and my wife loves it, as do the dogs.

It's been 20 years since I bought a car that wasn't a Ford. Unfortunately, my 95 Windstar has been a reliability nightmare despite excellent maintenance and conservative driving. I've had to replace the timing cover gasket for $700, the mass air sensor twice, and I've had continual electrical problems. Now, I'm facing transmission issues. I reached out to Ford for relief, but they ignored my request. As a result, I've decided to start looking at other car brands.

This vehicle has had some issues with its head gaskets, unfortunately. It has blown them five times, which is quite frustrating. The transmission also failed at 40k miles. While I have had some trouble with it, I would not recommend this vehicle. If anyone tries to sell or even give you one of these things, I would suggest looking elsewhere.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share that I purchased this car three weeks ago and it seems to be doing pretty well, despite having 98,000 miles on it. After reading some reviews, I'm starting to wonder if I should sell it while I still can. I've noticed that many of you have had to replace the head gasket on your '95' as well. By the way, would anyone be interested in a nice, clean van? Let me know!

The vehicle has undergone several repairs, including a new lower engine, replaced head gaskets, and a whole engine replacement. Additionally, ABS sensors and front rotors were replaced, and there have been continuous engine check lights, airbag light, and speedometer issues. The rear windows and power locks have also stopped working. Based on these experiences, the writer advises against purchasing another Ford vehicle.

The transmission failed at 60,000 well-maintained highway miles, and the engine failed due to a manufacturer defect that Ford admitted to, 1,500 miles past the recall. Despite contacting Ford's corporate office, we were met with unhelpful responses from their trained representatives. It is unfortunate that such a beautifully designed vehicle has subpar components. In contrast, our Toyotas have lasted over 200,000 miles. As a result, we have decided to purchase a Toyota to replace this vehicle.
