The Kia Soul is a subcompact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Kia since 2008. Often described and marketed as a crossover since its introduction, the Soul is a hatchback with a box proportion and tall roof, which are designed to maximize its interior space. Despite its SUV-like styling, the Soul was never available with all-wheel drive, instead it is exclusively a front-wheel drive vehicle.

The Soul first appeared in 2006 in the form of a concept model displayed at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The production model made its debut at the Paris Motor Show in 2008. During its introduction, Kia stated that the Soul is aimed at the North American market, and targeted towards buyers in the 18 to 35-year old range.

The second-generation model was introduced in 2013 for the 2014 model year, which featured a larger exterior and interior dimensions along with a reworked chassis, while keeping its boxy styling. The Soul is currently in its third generation, which was introduced in 2018 for the 2019 model year. Since 2014, Kia has also marketed a battery electric variant as the Soul EV.

The name "Soul" comes from the homophone of Seoul, the city that hosts Kia's headquarters.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-25
  • VIN: KNDJP3A5XF7
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: purchased vehicle on 10/12/2024 was driving it home the car started knocking, and loosing acceleration on freeway. the car was smelling of very volatile gas fumes. i put some gas in car for the trip home . drove about 15-18 miles had to pullover into the v shape of the merging section of a on ramp,. could not make it to the emergency lane on the freeway. used family members road side assistance to get car home, took it to the kia dealer (car pros moreno valley) towed to them because they said had to get a appt,. which they set up for today 10/25/2024. the intake person was letting us know it was just a update as if the fuel leak and oil leak was not a part of the recall and it would cost us 9000-13,000 to fix the engine plus the diagnosis of 240.00 getting the run around already for a dangerous situation. the car has caught fire for other owners, of the same year and make. the customer care person stated to me it is just a oil pan leak, as if the car is safe and anything else is our problem. the car reeks of fumes and could not be safe to drive. they were questioning us about the recall as to why it was not done? we told him we were not the owners we dont know if they got the notices? no, unknown only owned the car 0n 10/12/24 for 30 minutes before this started warning lights appeared on dash after knocking and acceleration went out. car was towed and left at kia dealer today. he was talking to us as if it was our fault the car was dangerous and could blow up while driving!!!

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-01
  • VIN: KNDJN2A23F7
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Earlier last year, we had suddenly had an issue with the Kia Soul. We received a check engine light and noticed a loud clicking noise as the vehicle began accelerating and noticed the vehicle had difficulty accelrating. We left the vehicle parked and then attempted to change the battery and oil to see if either were a contributing factor. When we noticed no improvement upon turning on the car, we took the vehicle to a licensed dealership: Arapahoe Kia to check the vehicle to diagnose the issue and help determine if this was covered under warranty. On our drive (which was about 2 miles from where we had left the car, the engine seized so we had the vehicle towed there. Once we got the diag back, they told us the code but wanted service records to honor the warranty from all oil changes in all states for the past 5 years or pay full cost of vehicle. No mention was made of the prior repaired recalls or determination if the cause could have been because of the unprepared recall that clearly states the syptoms and result being the exact problem we experienced. A few months later when we received notification from a different licensed dealer we had the unrepaired recall (in automated texts and emails), we called back Arapahoe Kia who still had the car, and they again stated service records would be needed to honor the NHTSA recall and also admitted they didn’t attempt to identify if the engine issue we had was caused by the unrepaired recall, as they only looked at the code and visual inspection of oil sludge, and treated it like a warranty claim to deny and did not validate the recall as the cause. But they still have refused to actually inspect the recall concern to determine if the engine trouble was caused by it and repair it as obligated if it was. Instead they keep asking us to pay for the full engine without validating root cause under the NHTSA recall.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-30
  • VIN: KNDJX3A57F7
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The car has consistently burned oil, and I’ve had several engine-related repairs: 09/2022: Camshaft replaced. The check engine light came on again, but I was told the camshaft was fine and that the car just needed an oil change. 04/2023: Check engine light came on, AutoZone diagnostic code P0011. 06/2023: Check engine light on again, AutoZone diagnostic code P0011. 09/2023: Check engine light on again AutoZone diagnostic code P0011. 06/2024: Check engine light came on AutoZone diagnostic code P0014. 07/2024: check engine light on-taken to Firestone Auto for an oil change 07/2024: check engine light on- car to Christian Brothers Automotive, where the camshaft and timing chain belt were replaced. Documented a knocking sound in the vehicle. 09/30/2024: Vehicle shook violently on the highway, sputtering as if the engine would fail. Check engine light came on after car began to shake. 10/2024: We Care Auto diagnosed the car. I was told the engine needs replacement due to misfires, low compression, and no oil in cylinders 2 and 3. Safford Kia Brown of Manassas recommended replacing the ignition coil, spark plugs, and conducting a fuel induction service, diagnostic, and synthetic oil change. Given the car’s engine history, I don’t believe this will resolve the root problem, and it’s likely the car will need more repairs soon. Driving under these conditions compromises my safety and the safety of others, increasing the likelihood of a life-threatening situation. Per Motor and Wheel and Fast Company, the December 2020 recall addressed engine issues and fire risks in Kia Souls from 2014-2016. Owners reported hearing knocking noises before their engines failed or caught fire while driving. Some saw smoke before safely stopping, highlighting the dangers of unnoticed warnings. CarMax's warranty acknowledges the issue and is willing to authorize repairs, so I would like to know why Kia will not honor this as well. I ask Kia to reconsider and investigate further.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-01
  • VIN: KNDJN2A24F7
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: the vehicle would not accelerate. I was doing about 40 on the highway when I got off. The vehicle at no time was hot or had any leaks; it was checked by me as well as a man at the gas station. I proceed home as I approach my place; about 3 minutes in, I parked, then the vehicle started knocking, the engine light came on, and all the engine oil spilled. I took a picture of the oil leak on that day on or about 6/2. Kia's engines for Souls 2015-2016 have had engine recalls. My safety was at risk. Kia had the vehicle in April, and an inspection by their mechanics failed to note engine issues.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-06
  • VIN: KNDJX3A56F7
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I own a 2015 Kia Soul affected by recall SC200, which addresses engine compartment fires due to oil/fuel leaks and potential engine damage. My vehicle experienced engine halts at high speeds, and Peak Kia in Littleton, CO, discovered a leaking valve cover gasket and PCV valve. Despite these issues being relevant to the recall, Kia and the dealership refuse comprehensive testing or repairs under the recall. The dealership initially suggested engine replacement but later claimed only a Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) update and lockup test were required. They refuse to conduct oil analysis, leak-down tests, or endoscopic inspections to rule out systemic issues or internal engine damage. The vehicle has been with the dealership for five weeks. Kia's customer service, including a case manager named Courtney, promised to review the case but failed to follow up. The District Parts & Services manager, Jacob, instructed the dealership to close my request without further testing and refuses to open a validation case or respond to emails. Kia Customer Support has promised callbacks for three weeks but has not returned them. The dealership is attempting to charge for an inspection fee and repeat systemic repairs despite these being likely covered under the recall. They have not addressed relevant Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) ENG222 and FUE053, which provide guidance for diagnosing and repairing oil consumption and leak issues. I believe Kia and the dealership are not complying with the full scope of the SC200 recall, which mandates comprehensive inspections and repairs for any oil leaks. They are using circular logic to avoid performing necessary tests and repairs, potentially putting my safety at risk and leaving me vulnerable to future engine failure. I request NHTSA's intervention to ensure Kia and the dealership comply with the recall requirements, perform all necessary testing and repairs, and address the potential systemic issues with my vehicle's engine.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-16
  • VIN: KNDJP3A50F7
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: It started in September 2022 when my Kia soul started spuddering and slowing down quickly while driving on the interstate. Drove it on limp to the closest mechanic shop. They recommended a complete engine replacement, which would cost more than the vehicle was worth. Had it towed to a Kia dealership for their diagnosis. They came back and said it was a clogged catalytic converter. Replacing it fixed the car. Now to June 2024 and car slowed down drastically while on the highway, with my wife and newborn child in the car. I had it towed to Kia again and they diagnosed it as a total engine failure with a clogged catalytic converter again (catalytic converter only lasted 1.5 years!). Again, the replacement cost is more than the value of the car. I think they knew of the issue in 2022 or failed to diagnose the actual problem and put my family at risk.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-09
  • VIN: KNDJN2A26F7
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: NHTSA Recall:19V120 The ESC light went on during high winds and stayed on. The car stuttered going up hill @40+ mph, so I looked for any outstanding recalls and decided to take it into LutherKia Bloomington. There were other recalls I was unaware of that I checked boxes to fix. They examined my vehicle and told me that my Catalytic Converter was plugged/melted and needed to be replaced. That isn't related to ESC as far as I'm aware, also I asked -why- it plugged and they were unwilling/able to determine. Other mechanics online told me that it is crucial to determine the root cause of why it plugged/melted and fix it. I looked closer at the recalls and pointed out that the various outstanding recalls called for engine tests, none of which they did. I then noticed that recall #19V120 directly mentioned catalytic converter damage. LutherKia refused to check the engine, even though the other recalls stated they would. I called [XXX] and Luther refuse to do anything except update computer codes since KIA will not pay for it. The KIA's catalytic converter is damaged and very possibly engine damage as well, but they refuse to check since they said KIA wont cover labor costs. ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-09
  • VIN: KNDJP3A5XF7
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I recieved a recall notice for my 2015 kia soul via mail earlier this year and made an appointment to have the recall maintenance addressed at the local dealership as directed. After a month and a half the maintenance was completed including a successful pass engine test. Shortly after departing the car had issues accelerating and the check engine light began flashing. I immediately took it back to them. After approx two hours of them working on it more sent me on my way. Again the acceleration issues (limp home mode) and flashing check engine light. To complicate things I had an IID from an OWI two years ago so at this point they require me to be there with the car as they cannot work on it without me. After having to repeatedly take time off work to be there for 6 or 7 "videos" i have the thing removed as I've already lost my 2nd job at this point and cant afford to lose the main one while this is slowly playing out. It has now been over three weeks since KIA has messed up this vehicle and there is no resolution in site. They have yet to really define what is now wrong with the many tests and videos they have sent into coporate or own the issue and have yet to provide any timeframe for resolution. Meanwhile I cant take it to anyone else until they decide if they are fixing it as they SHOULD be as i did not stretegically plan for my engine to fail the day they did the recall maintenance after waiting 1.5 months to even get in. The vehicle should have been towed to their lot and not driven repeatedly on a check engine light blinking as they were having me do however i would be up to thousands of dollars in tows with no guarantee of reimbursement up to 90 days of the "resolution" which we have yet to have any timeframe for. I have called corporate and now it seems the line puts you on silent hold for 12-15 min and disconnects you without ever talking to a human. I have brought this up with the BBB and local attorney general office as well.

  • Consequence: Piston damage may result in an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash. A broken connecting rod may puncture the engine block allowing engine oil to escape. The leaking oil may contact the exhaust, increasing the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will upgrade the Catalytic Overheating Protection Engine Control Unit logic to prevent overheating of the catalytic converter. In addition, the catalytic converter will also be replaced if it has been damaged. Depending on the extent of any damage, the engine may also be replaced, free of charge. The recall began April 17, 2019. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC176.

  • Remedy: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and secure the pinion plug or replace the steering gear assembly, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began November 16, 2017. Negative 2015 Kia Soul car reviews

  1. Geovanny Dach 2024-11-02

The car has some great features, such as the seating position, panoramic sunroof, ample headroom, and maneuverability. The interior is of high quality, although there were some rattles on the dashboard and suspension squeaks over some bumps when cold. While the fuel economy is rather disappointing for its small size, the car has plenty of pickup, and the transmission shifts very smoothly. It is very easy to park and see out of. However, the ride can be bouncy and tiresome on long trips. It is recommended to avoid the 18” factory wheels as the ride is much worse with them. Overall, it is a good value with an incredible amount of passenger space for its size, although the luggage space is rather limited. Unfortunately, I had some issues with the engine, specifically keeping the fuel injectors clean, which is a problem with some direct-injected cars. Despite this, I believe it is a great car.

The navigation system has been a bit of a challenge for us. We have had some difficulty programming in our home address and finding certain concert venues. Additionally, we have experienced some unexpected rerouting when accidentally bumping the touch screen. However, we still appreciate the car itself and have found that a more basic model without the navigation system may be a better fit for us. Overall, we have had a positive experience with the car and look forward to future improvements.

I would advise against leasing a car from this dealership. Unfortunately, I had a negative experience with them. Even after turning in my car, which had new tires and 7000 miles less than agreed upon, I was hit with unexpected charges. The service I received was not up to par and I felt like I was being taken advantage of. While the car itself was not bad, I will not be doing business with Kia finance or any of their dealerships again. It's important to be cautious and aware of potential scams, even if the initial interactions seem friendly.

If you decide to purchase this car, I would highly recommend getting the extended warranty. Unfortunately, I have had to replace the engine three times in less than two years due to issues with the exhaust valve, fuel pump, and oil pump. It has been a frustrating experience, especially since I really enjoy everything else about the Soul. However, I have been stranded too many times due to these issues.

This Kia Soul will be the first and last one I ever purchase, new or used. Unfortunately, I have had some issues with it, such as the AC going out and the catalyst going bad. While the warranty did not cover these repairs, I was able to get them fixed for $800 and $1800, respectively. However, the car still will not pass inspection. Despite these challenges, I remain confident in my decision to purchase a Kia Soul and will continue to enjoy driving it.

Great car for the money! As someone who is 6'3

Time for a new rig for my bride! I started looking at Sorrentos and bought my wife the '16 Sorrento, which we both loved. It didn't take long for me to find myself back on Kia's lot trying out the 'Soul', which immediately caught my eye. I absolutely adore this car! It had only 5 miles on it when I bought it and has just passed 1,000. From the sound system to the Nav, Bluetooth, heat/cooled seats and steering wheel (a big deal in Alaska), not to mention the speed at which the car heats up, this car has it all! The 'sport' steering, incredible stock sound, backup cam, LED lighting, and pano sun/moonroof, lighted speakers, and functional control from the steering wheel for everything, including a built-in hard drive and SD stick input. What's not to love!

    Great gas mileage and comfortable.

I hope you're doing well! Out of several options, I'm happy to say that I've chosen the 2015.

  5. Lucious Turcotte 2024-10-24

I bought a low mileage, used Soul with a manual transmission to pull behind my motorhome. It's been a great addition to my collection of vehicles, especially for running errands and appreciating the gas mileage. The interior is surprisingly spacious, especially for the driver. I found that the modifications for towing were easy to install with the Roadmaster kit I ordered. It's a breeze to tow, hookup, and drive at the other end. If you're considering buying a used one, make sure you get a good deal, as the value can drop quickly. Five years later, my Kia is still serving its purpose behind the motorhome, with not many odometer miles but plenty of miles behind the motorhome.
