1995 Chevrolet Corsica problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Corsica (named after Corsica, France) is a front-wheel drive compact car that was produced by Chevrolet from 1987 until 1996. The Corsica was built upon the L-body platform. It shared the L-body with the 2-door Beretta, and the rebadged revival of the Pontiac Tempest which was essentially the same car, but was only sold in Canada. The Corsica came in two styles and four trims. Sold initially only as a 4-door sedan, it was also available as a 5-door hatchback from model years 1989 until 1991. Corsicas were built alongside the Beretta by both the Wilmington Assembly in Delaware and Linden Assembly in New Jersey.

Year-to-year changes

1987–1989

The Corsica was first sold as a fleet car to rental agencies and large companies in 1987, prior to mainstream release. The Corsica and Beretta were the second best-selling passenger cars in America in calendar year 1988, right behind the Ford Escort. Much of the suspension components were borrowed from the J-body Chevrolet Cavalier, and the chassis was an extension of that of the J-body, but modeled with similar proportions to the N-body. The L-body platform however, was engineered by Chevrolet rather than Oldsmobile. The car was equipped with either the 2.0 L TBI OHV I4 from the Cavalier, or the 2.8 L MPFI OHV V6 from the Chevrolet Celebrity. The base Corsica's door handles were colored silver, while the Corsica LT/LTZ had black-colored handles. Some earlier models had a column shifter with a handbrake between the front seats, an uncommon configuration for most compact cars of the time. A 5-door hatchback model was introduced for 1989, as was an LTZ performance package that included many suspension parts from the Beretta. A rare XT trim included all the performance parts from the LTZ trim as well as a leather interior, special body kit and spoiler package designed for GM by a third party supplier.

1990

The base model Corsica was dropped, leaving the LT and LTZ. Both engines offered were increased in displacement. The Corsica now either used the same 2.2 L 4-cylinder engine and 3-speed automatic transmission as the Cavalier, or the 3.1 L V6 and 3-speed automatic from the Lumina. Minor changes were made to the interior, mostly around the driver controls.

Common 1995 Chevrolet Corsica problems

The 1995 Chevrolet Corsica is known for several common problems that have been reported by its owners. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:

  • Check Engine Light Due to Gas Cap Issue: Another common problem with the 1995 Chevrolet Corsica is a check engine light that is triggered due to a loose or missing gas cap. This issue can be easily fixed by tightening or replacing the gas cap, but it can be frustrating for drivers who are not familiar with the car's warning lights.
  • Oil Leaks: The 1995 Chevrolet Corsica is known for oil leaks, particularly around the gaskets. This issue can be caused by worn-out gaskets or a damaged oil pan. While oil leaks are not necessarily dangerous, they can be messy and can lead to engine damage if left unchecked.
  • Water Leaks: In addition to oil leaks, the 1995 Chevrolet Corsica is also known for water leaks, particularly in the driver's floorboard. This issue can be caused by a damaged or clogged drain plug or a faulty heater core. While water leaks are not necessarily dangerous, they can be uncomfortable for drivers who have to deal with wet floors.
  • Faulty A/C System: The 1995 Chevrolet Corsica is known for a faulty A/C system, which can fail after several years of use. This issue can be caused by a damaged compressor or a leaking refrigerant. While a faulty A/C system is not necessarily dangerous, it can be uncomfortable for drivers who have to deal with hot temperatures during the summer.
  • Engine Misfires: The 1995 Chevrolet Corsica is known for engine misfires, which can be caused by worn-out spark plugs or a faulty ignition system. This issue can be frustrating for drivers who experience a loss of power or a decrease in fuel efficiency.
  • Transmission Issues: The 1995 Chevrolet Corsica is known for transmission issues, particularly in the automatic transmission. This issue can be caused by worn-out gears or a damaged torque converter. While transmission issues are not necessarily dangerous, they can be expensive to repair.

In summary, the 1995 Chevrolet Corsica is known for several common problems, including a cracked head, check engine light due to gas cap issue, oil leaks, water leaks, faulty A/C system, engine misfires, and transmission issues. While some of these issues can be easily fixed, others can be more serious and may require expensive repairs. It is recommended to regularly maintain the car and address any issues as soon as they arise to prevent further damage.

Negative 1995 Chevrolet Corsica car reviews

  1. Gussie Morissette 2024-10-14

I purchased this car back in January 2002 from a friend's mother-in-law who had unfortunately passed away. At the time of purchase, it had only been driven for 17,000 miles, and now it has over 58,000 miles. Although I have had to replace the alternator four times, which seems to be a common issue with this car, I am planning to consult my mechanic about installing a reflector shield between the exhaust manifold and alternator, as I read on a helpful website. The white paint has started to peel, but it was recalled for that issue. I touch it up with Rustoleum. Fortunately, I have no rust, and the car gets an impressive 29MPG while providing a smooth ride. The air conditioning was great before I was in an accident, and I occasionally notice a moldy smell, which I suspect is due to water getting inside. Despite these minor issues, I absolutely adore this car. It just keeps going and going!

  2. Reilly Lubowitz 2024-10-02

If you're considering daily driving an older Corsica, I would advise against it. While they may have seemed like a good idea at the time, these cars were unfortunately not built to last. I personally owned a '95 model with a 2.2 engine, which I purchased at 47,500 kms. Unfortunately, I had to scrap it before it even reached 100,000 kms. The headliner was sagging, the interior leaked, and the car broke down too often. I would recommend looking into other options instead of buying this Chevy.

  3. Theo Kozey 2024-06-26

Congratulations on your marriage! We purchased this car as a second vehicle with just over 35000 miles on it. Although we had it for a year and a half, we experienced some issues with it. We had to replace the head gaskets due to a radiator fluid leak into the oil, which cost us $650. We also had to replace the battery, alternator, and three tires, which cost us $250 and $200 respectively. We also had to replace the ignition switch, which cost us $400. Unfortunately, the car still stalls for no reason, so we have decided to trade it in and get a new car. We believe that having car payments will be more cost-effective than spending money on repairs.

  4. Daron Hills 2024-04-25

This car is a reliable and efficient vehicle that has proven to be a great investment. Despite some minor repairs such as the alternator and heater coil, it has performed exceptionally well with no major issues. The car boasts an impressive fuel mileage of approximately 30MPG. Although it tends to start hard in the rain, this can be easily remedied with new plugs and wires. The interior design could be improved, particularly the placement of the power window controls on the front of the center console. Additionally, the high beam switch can be problematic and may cause damage to the turn signal lever. The paint is peeling and the wheels have rusted out, but these are minor cosmetic issues that can be easily fixed. Overall, this car is a solid choice for anyone seeking a reliable and efficient vehicle.

  5. Keven Lesch 2024-03-20

I absolutely love this car! My family got it a year ago and it was passed on to me as a graduation present. It has never left us stranded. I have only owned it for two weeks, but in the first week alone I put 1,000 miles on it. The biggest repair so far was a lower control arm which cost $220. It does need some work, such as new tires and a catalytic converter (it's quite loud). However, please be aware that if the brights are on and the switch snaps, the brights won't turn off. The power lock and horn just went out (possibly a fuse issue?), and the ABS in one wheel doesn't work right all the time. But when it does work, the brakes are fantastic. The car is white with red interior and has around 86,666 miles. It also has a 4-cylinder engine which, with 120bhp and 130pft, I find to be adequate. The acceleration is spirited.

Positive 1995 Chevrolet Corsica car reviews

  1. Jacinto Rempel 2024-11-28

I bought this car as a rental with 29,000 miles and it now has over 133,000 miles. Despite having the 4 liter and agreeing that it is a bit sluggish, I have had some repairs but the car keeps going. I make sure to change the oil every 3,000 miles and even though it sits outside all winter, it only has a small area of rust by the front passenger door. The best part is that it starts every time! I hope to get a couple more years out of it because I really like it and would buy another if they still made Corsicas.

  2. Olin Hansen 2024-11-23

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with the Corsica. I purchased my first one back in November of '97 and have been driving it for over 280,000 km with only routine maintenance and very few repairs. I actually liked it so much that I ended up getting a second one, this time with a 6 cylinder engine. I find that the 6 cylinder provides lots of power and a nice highway ride. To be honest, it's not a luxury car, but it's a great option if you're looking for a reliable and simple used car. In fact, if I come across a low mileage Corsica, I might just have to get my hands on a third one!

  3. Dock Bernhard 2024-06-14

For your son's first car, you made a great choice with the 95 Corsica! Although the back seat may not be the most comfortable, the overall ride is smooth and it gets an impressive 30-32 miles per gallon, which is fantastic with gas prices being so high. It's great to hear that you haven't had any issues with the paint or electrical system, and that it now has 110,000 miles and still runs great. As a parent, I would definitely recommend this medium-sized vehicle for any teenager's first car. Well done on making such a smart purchase!

  4. Kurt Watsica 2024-06-04

The car's gas mileage is definitely its best feature. On long trips to Texas, I consistently get between 32 to 35 mpg. The air conditioner has always worked well, and I appreciate the interior lights that automatically shut off. While I haven't experienced any breakdowns, there was one sensor that went out and greatly affected performance. Personally, I found the seats easy to adjust, but my wife didn't find them comfortable for long trips. Additionally, the back seat is a bit cramped.

  5. Trace Armstrong 2024-05-29

I bought this car to get me from Monessen to West Mifflin, PA. It runs great, although it has a little less power on hills. With gas prices being what they are, I only spend $5.00 on gas for my twice-weekly trips to West Mifflin. However, the back seat is not ideal for tall people's legs. The car was repainted, so the paint job is currently in good condition. It runs so smoothly that it's easy to accidentally speed without realizing it unless you check your speedometer.
