1999 Cadillac Seville problems
The Cadillac Seville is a mid-size luxury car manufactured by Cadillac from the 1976 to 2004 model years as a smaller-sized, premium model. It was replaced by the STS in 2004 for the 2005 model year.
Origin of the name
The name of "Cadillac's first small car" was selected over a revival of LaSalle or the GM design staff's preference, LaScala, primarily because, as noted by GM Marketing Director Gordon Horsburgh, "It had no negatives." The initial suggestion was "Leland" in honor of one of the make's founders but it was rejected because most buyers wouldn't understand the reference and Henry Leland had also founded rival Lincoln.
Hundreds of suggestions were considered: after extensive research, LaSalle was the top pick with St. Moritz a distant second, trailed further by Seville. A troubled past (LaSalle) and difficult pronunciation (St. Moritz) led to the eventual selection of the Seville nameplate.
Seville is the name of a Spanish province and its capital, renowned for its history and treasures of art and architecture. Cadillac had first used the nameplate for a two-door hardtop version of the 1956 Eldorado. 1960 was the last model year for the Eldorado Seville, returning in 1967 under a different name.

Common 1999 Cadillac Seville problems
The 1999 Cadillac Seville STS has been reported to have several electrical issues by its owners. One common problem is related to the Remote Interface Module (RIM), which is responsible for managing the car's electrical systems. The RIM has been known to cause issues with the fuel gauge, door locks, and warning chimes. In some cases, the RIM may not communicate with other parts of the car's electrical system, leading to a lack of data and communication between components.
Another electrical issue that has been reported is related to the car's airbags. There have been several complaints about airbag problems, including issues with the frontal airbags and their sensors. These problems have been reported to occur at various mileages, ranging from 44,000 to 103,000 miles.
The car's electrical system has also been reported to cause issues with the power windows and door locks. In some cases, the passenger and rear power windows do not work, and the lock switches do not function on any of the doors. The driver's side power seat and heat, as well as the power adjuster for the steering wheel, may also be affected.
In addition to these electrical issues, the 1999 Cadillac Seville STS has been reported to have problems with its fuel system. There have been complaints about gasoline delivery hoses and lines, as well as issues with the fuel injection system. These problems have been reported to occur at various mileages, ranging from 119,500 to 62,540 miles.
The car's electrical system has also been reported to cause issues with the seat belts and their anchorages. There have been complaints about the front seat belts and their anchorages, as well as issues with the power adjustment of the front seats.
Finally, the 1999 Cadillac Seville STS has been reported to have problems with its automatic transmission. There have been complaints about the car's transmission, including issues with the power adjustment of the front seats and the seat belts.
In summary, the 1999 Cadillac Seville STS has been reported to have several common problems, including electrical issues related to the RIM, airbags, fuel system, and seat belts. These problems have been reported to occur at various mileages and can cause significant inconvenience for car owners. It is important for owners of this car to be aware of these issues and to take appropriate steps to address them if they occur.

This vehicles fuel economy (17 city/26 hwy) doesn't seem to be a match for such strong performance and handling which is outstanding. The build quality and the appearance make this old car still hold it's own against the newer models and in most cases surpasses all but the best offered today.

HE HAD FALLEN ASLEEP WAITING FOR HIS MOTHER/MY WIFE AND THE ENGINE CAUGHT FIRE. HE NEEDED TO CLIMB OUT OF WINDOW AND PULL HIS DOG THROUGH THE WINDOW. HE INJURED HIMSELF AND WENT TO HOSPITAL. THE FIRE WAS SO INTENSE THAT THE ENGINE FELL APART FROM HEAT, THE CABIN WAS DESTROYED, FRONT TIRES ARE GONE/MELTED WHILE TRUNK AND GAS TANK WERE RELATIVELY FINE. THE POLICE AND FIRE DEPARTMENTS RESPONDED TO THIS DISASTER IN OUR DRIVEWAY. MY SON ALSO LOST VARIOUS PERSONAL POSSESSIONS AND HIS TRANSPORTATION TO WORK. IT HAS BEEN SEVERAL MONTHS SINCE MY SON'S NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE AND THE ONLY THING GM SAYS IS THAT THE FIRE DAMAGED THE CAR AND THERE IS NOTHING IT CAN DO. IT ALSO HAS INFORMED ME THAT IF I WISH TO TAKE ANY OTHER ACTION, I MUST RETAIN THE VEHICLE, WHICH IS A BURNED-OUT SHELL OF A VEHICLE IN OUR FRONT DRIVEWAY. IT IS A REMINDER EVERY DAY THAT MY SON ALMOST DIED IN WHAT I THOUGHT WAS A HIGH QUALITY CAR AND GM DOES NOT CARE ABOUT ITS CUSTOMERS. I WAS HOPING THAT GM WOULD RESOLVE THIS MATTER IN A REASONABLE MANNER SO MY SON COULD MOVE FORWARD WITH HIS LIFE. HE LOST SEVERAL PERSONAL AFFECTS, HIS PRESCRIPTION EYE GLASSES, SCHOOL SUPPLIES AND MONEY HE HAD WITHDRAWN TO GIVE TO MY WIFE FOR A SCHOOL BILL. I ALSO HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO USE OUR BONNEVILLE FOR 5 MONTHS BECAUSE THE CADILLAC IS BLOCKING ACCESS TO IT. IS THERE ANYTHING YOU CAN DO THAT WILL RESOLVE THIS MATTER IN A FAIR MANNER? WE NEED IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE FROM GM. THANK YOU. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-05-14
- VIN: 1G6KS54Y2XU
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: THIS MAY BE NOTHING YOU CAN HELP WITH, HOWEVER THE NORTHSTAR ENGINES MADE BY GM HAVE HAD A DEFECT FOR MANY, MANY YEARS. THERE ARE NO RECORDS THAT YOU HAVE CHECKED INTO THE PROBLEMS WITH THIS. IT REGARDS THE HEAD GASKETS BREAKING AT AN ALARMING AND CONSISTENT RATE FOR THE PAST 10 YEARS! ASK ANY MECHANIC ABOUT THIS. AROUND 100,000 MILES ON THE ENGINE THE HEAD GASKETS BREAK, AND COOLANT LEAKS INTO THE ENGINE. NO ONE WILL REPLACE THE GASKETS. ALL YOU CAN DO IS SPEND A SMALL FORTUNE ($5,000 TO $9,000) ON A NEW ENGINE. A WASTE OF MONEY SINCE THE NEXT NORTHSTAR ENGINE WILL PROBABLY DO THE SAME THING. THIS IS SOMETHING THAT GM KNOWS ABOUT AND CONTINUES TO IGNORE. NO WONDER THEY ARE GOING OUT OF BUSINESS. AFTER 100 YEARS THEY STILL CANNOT PRODUCE A RELIABLE ENGINE! IF YOU EXPECT AMERICANS TO CONTINUE BUYING AMERICAN CARS, ESPECIALLY CADILLACS, PLEASE DO SOME RESEARCH ON THIS. YOU CAN FIND LETTERS WRITTEN BY SEVILLE OWNERS ON THE WEB ABOUT THIS. I AM MOST CERTAINLY NOT THE ONLY ONE, JUST ONE OF MANY, MANY LEMON OWNERS. HOPING YOU CARE ENOUGH TO HAVE LISTENED AND CHECK THIS OUT, SINCERELY *TR

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-06-17
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: ON JUNE 17, AT OR ABOUT 7:30 PM, MY WIFE ENTERED HER VEHICLE, A 1999 CADILLAC SEVILLE STS, SHE TURNED THE KEY TO START THE CAR, AND THE DRIVER SIDE AIRBAG DEPLOYED. THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED ON DRY PAVEMENT, THE VEHICLE WAS NOT IN GEAR, AND HAD SUSTAINED NO PREVIOUS DAMAGE. WE CONTACTED THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP, AND SUBSEQUENTLY, THE MANUFACTURER, TO NO AVAIL. TO DATE, THEY HAVE REFUSED TO ASSIST US WITH THIS PROBLEM. UPON CONTACTING THE DEALERSHIP, ON FRIDAY, JUNE 18, FIVE DIFFERENT MECHANICS TOLD US THAT THIS TYPE OF DEPLOYMENT IS "NOT SUPPOSED TO OCCUR." THAT, IN FACT, THE AIRBAG SHOULD NOT DEPLOY IF THE CAR IS NOT IN GEAR. FURTHER, UPON CONTACTING THE MANUFACTURER, I WAS TOLD AGAIN THAT THIS SITUATION SHOULD NOT OCCUR. THE MANUFACTURER TOLD ME THAT THE ONLY CIRCUMSTANCES UNDER WHICH THE AIRBAG WILL DEPLOY INADVERTENTLY IS IF MOISTURE OR CORROSION BUILDS UP. UNDER THESE CIRCUMSTANCES, A WARNING LIGHT WILL DISPLAY TO SIGNAL THE DRIVER THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE AIRBAG SYSTEM. THERE WAS NO INDICATION THAT THERE WAS A MOISTURE OR CORROSION BUILDUP IN THE SYSTEM. SINCE THE AIRBAG DEPLOYED UNDER CIRCUMSTANCES IN WHICH IT IS NOT SUPPOSED TO, AND SINCE THERE WAS NO INDICATION BY VIRTUE OF A DISPLAYED WARNING LIGHT, THERE IS OBVIOUSLY A DEFECT IN THE DESIGN OR MANUFACTURE OF THIS SYSTEM, ON THIS PARTICULAR MODEL VEHICLE. FORTUNATELY, MY WIFE WAS NOT DRIVING THE CAR WHEN THE DEPLOYMENT OCCURRED. HOWEVER, WITH THOUSANDS OF 1999 CADILLAC SEVILLE'S ON THE ROAD, IT MAY SIMPLY BE A MATTER OF TIME WHEN AN INADVERTENT DEPLOYMENT OCCURS WHILE THE VEHICLE IS MOVING. OBVIOUSLY, DEPLOYMENT UNDER THESE CIRCUMSTANCES, RATHER THAN SAVE LIVES, MAY RESULT IN THE LOSS OF LIFE; AND CONSIDERING THAT THE MANUFACTURER IS UNWILLING TO ACKNOWLEDGE OR ASSIST TO REPAIR SUCH DEFECT, GOVERNMENT OR REGULATORY INTERVENTION IS IMPERATIVE TO AVOID THE POTENTIAL LOSS OF LIFE. *NM

I bought this car from a dealership in July 2007 with only 19700 miles on it. It's my first used car, and I've been driving Buicks for years. The car is in mint condition with black on black, and it turns heads wherever I go. It rides better than any car I've ever owned and has options that even the 2008 Buick Lucerne doesn't have. It's a wonderful ride with great power. The gas mileage isn't great, but I already knew that. I've put 4000 trouble-free miles on it and am trying to keep it in mint condition. I was able to pick up a two-year, $100 deductible policy due to the low mileage. Although I don't think I'll buy another Buick, I absolutely love this machine.
-
I bought this car used a few years ago for a steal at $7500 when it had around 90K miles on it. These 1999 models, including the Deville, are great cars if you take care of them. Proper maintenance is key for any car, regardless of make or model. Neglecting maintenance will only lead to problems. While this car has had its share of issues, that's to be expected with any used car. Buying it brand new is not recommended unless you have an extra $50K lying around. All in all, this is a great car.
-
I've owned many GM vehicles and several Cadillacs but this STS is the best yet. It's incredible to drive with its 300hp and tight road hugging. I love the feeling of stomping down on the accelerator and flying. Mine is a black on black color and it turns heads and gets comments everywhere I go. The fit and finish are great, and although I had a faulty gas gauge, I had no other problems at all.
-
This is my 4th Cadillac now and so far I've put 3,000 miles on it and it's doing really well. I hope it will continue to run smoothly for a long time with little to no problems. I truly believe it will. Northstars are great motors that last forever and get 27mpg on the highway.

I have a 99 STS. I absolutely love this car, but I have had some trouble with it. There was some noise on the left side in the engine area when turning left, but it was fixed. The tray under the driver's seat came loose several times, and the heater on the driver's side had to be replaced. Unfortunately, the car dies when cornering or slowing down, even after a Super Tune up and crank sensor replacement. I contacted Cadillac, and while they are aware of the issue, they are still working on a solution.

It seems like the car can be a bit noisy on long trips and there may be some body vibration between 60 and 72 miles per hour. Additionally, it may be a bit of a tight fit for someone who is 6 feet tall in terms of front seat leg room.
Rodrick Bednar 2024-10-13
One week after purchase, my ABS and TC red lights came on. Additionally, my A/C stopped functioning properly - the distribution of air came down and heat was distributed instead of cooling. My car has been at the dealer garage for a week and I am awaiting the report for repairs. I will keep you informed of any updates.
Paolo Baumbach 2024-09-12
I recently traded my 96 STS for a 99 model with only 27000 miles. Although I am enjoying the new car, I have noticed a few issues. Unfortunately, I have lost some room in the back seat and trunk, and my fuel economy has decreased by 6 mpg. Additionally, I have experienced some problems with the seat memory keys, exterior trim, console cover, power port cover, and seat belt unit. The rear seat pass through is also not working as it should. The dealership has suggested that the tires may be to blame for the ride quality issues, and they have offered to replace them, but I am not convinced that this will solve the problem. At this point, I am considering exploring other options, as I believe that imports may offer better quality. Thank you for your understanding.
Carmelo Mayer 2024-07-28
The engine, transmission, and heating and A/C are great, which is something GM has always done well. However, there have been some issues with fit and finish, such as part of the dash separating, the back of the driver's seat being loose, and the under seat tray not working. Unfortunately, there have been too many major problems in just 50,000 miles, including the power seat and front struts needing replacement, electrical problems, poor braking, and expensive warranty repairs. I am worried about having to pay for these costly repairs before the lease is up. If I had chosen a 99 Lexus LS400 (which was priced the same), its trade-in value would be much higher than the STS. Based on my experience, I would not purchase this car again.
Jasper Murphy 2024-07-21
I love the gas mileage for a big car, which may sound weird. I purchased it at 93,000 miles and have put 30,000 miles on it. I appreciate the design, luxury, creature comforts (which are now standard in today's cars), and of course, the power of the North Star V8 engine. However, the things I dislike the most are the repairs, parts, and reliability. Although the car runs smoothly and feels great, the cost of repairs is quite high. For instance, I had to replace the water pump for $400 due to a worn O-ring that almost ruined the entire engine. The left rear shock burst and cost me $1,000 to replace. I still need to fix the internal oil/coolant leak, which will be quite expensive. The brakes also cost me $500, and the molding on the door was $120. It's like a girl who wants a sugar daddy to be pampered.
