Common 2003 Chevrolet Monte carlo problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, several common problems have been reported:
- Engine Stalling and Starting Issues: Owners have experienced the engine shutting off while driving, accompanied by the steering wheel locking. Despite the engine shutting off, the electricity remains on. When the engine is restarted, it starts fine, but there are concerns about the safety of immediately restarting the engine without allowing it to cool down. Additionally, starting the engine later in the day, especially after it has warmed up, can be challenging and may require multiple attempts. Some owners have reported hearing unusual noises and seeing smoke coming from the engine compartment, particularly from a part below the alternator.
- Electrical Problems: Complaints include issues with the turn signals working intermittently, which is a common problem with the 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo model year. This electrical issue can be frustrating and impact the safety of driving the vehicle.
- Cooling System: Another common problem involves coolant leaks, specifically coolant running down the passenger side of the engine. This issue is often attributed to broken coolant elbows, which may require replacement to prevent further leaks and potential engine damage.
- Climate Control Malfunction: Some owners have reported that their climate control only works on certain settings. This problem is often linked to a faulty blower motor resistor, particularly in the 2000-2003 Impala and Monte Carlo models.
These issues highlight some of the key concerns faced by owners of the 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Addressing these problems promptly and accurately is crucial to maintaining the vehicle's performance and safety.

I PUT A COMPETE NEW IGNITION IN IT, BOTH THE KEY PART AND THE IGNITION BLOCK AND I STILL HAVE THIS PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD BY CHEVROLET DEALER THAT THERE IS NO WAY TO BYPASS THE SECURITY IN THIS CAR BECAUSE THERE IS A CHIP IN THE STARTER THAT PREVENTS THIS. WHEN I GET OUT OF THE CAR AND PRESS THE LOCK ON THE KEY FOB REMOTE, THE HORN BLOWS AS AN INDICATOR THAT THE CAR IS LOCKED, BUT I CAN WALK OVER AND OPEN THE DOORS EVERY TIME. THE LOCK SYSTEM FOR THE DOORS IS NOT WORKING ELECTRICALLY EITHER. I AM AT ODDS AS TO WHAT TO DO WITH THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE BEFORE I SPEND MONEY TO FIX IT, I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT IS CAUSING IT FIRST. ALL THE DEALERS WANT AT LEAST $119.00 JUST TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. AND, I FEEL THAT IF THEY WANT MY SERVICE THEY COULD GIVE ME A BREAK AND THEN FIX MY PROBLEM. THAT WOULD BRING E BACK AGAIN AND AGAIN. IF YOU CAN, PLEASE HELP ME HERE. 2003 Chevrolet Monte carlo recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 9 recalls for different components of the 2003 Chevrolet Monte carlo.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 1998-1999 Chevrolet Lumina and Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1997-2004 Buick Regal and Pontiac Grand Prix, 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala, and 1998-2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. The affected vehicles were previously repaired under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 to address the possibility that engine oil may drip onto the hot exhaust manifold.
- Consequence: Engine oil that drips onto the hot surface of the exhaust manifold may result in a fire.
- Remedy: The remedy applied under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 did not adequately remove the safety risk. Under the improved remedy, dealers will replace the engines front valve cover and gasket. Vehicles that are covered by recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, or 15V-201 that have not yet received the original remedy will instead receive the improved remedy under the original recall number. The recall began on February 19, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Oldsmobile customer service at 1-800-442-6537 and Pontiac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 15757. Note: Until the improved remedy has been applied, owners are advised to park their vehicle outside since the fire risk exists even when the vehicle is unattended.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
- Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 3, 2014, that they are recalling 5,877,718 model year 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 1997-2003 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2005 Malibu Classic, 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero, 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 9, 2014. GM's number for this recall is 14350.

SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE A CONDITION IN WHICH DROPS OF ENGINE OIL MAY BE DEPOSITED ON THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD THROUGH HARD BRAKING.

- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE ENGINES FRONT VALVE COVER AND FRONT-VALVE-COVER GASKET WITH NEW PARTS OF AN IMPROVED DESIGN AND REMOVE THE ENGINES PLASTIC COVER AND PLASTIC OIL-FILL-TUBE EXTENSION, FREE OF CHARGE. I saw this car and had to check it out. It's a 2003 limited edition pace car. I tested it on a wet road and it handled great. When I punched it, it rocketed forward with no hesitation. I was really impressed and I'm planning on buying it to replace my Cadillac. The Northstar engine is going to make it a 100% classic show car. I compared it to my '83 Z28 350 300 with air induction and it's just wow!

Since purchasing the Monte Carlo, I've really enjoyed its smooth ride and high performance. It has a lot of power and I love how it handles. I feel in control of the vehicle and the road while I'm driving. This model provides more than enough room inside and in the trunk. I especially like the sleek, dynamic lines of the model. The design is very impressive. I hope it provides years of service!

This is the first SS I have purchased since 1988. I'm really happy with the new style and I was lucky enough to get a new Jeff Gordon edition even though the 04's were already out. Before this, I had a Pontiac Grand Prix GT which I really enjoyed, but unfortunately they no longer make it in a 2 door, so I decided to return to Chevy.

The Monte Carlo is a fantastic car! It's so comfortable for our 90-mile daily commute. With the 3800 series 2 V6, it has plenty of power, and the gas mileage is excellent for a larger car, averaging 27.6 mpg in the city and on the freeway. The stereo sounds awesome, and the acoustics inside are excellent. The driver controls are very ergonomically correct, and the car rides very smoothly on all surfaces while handling well for its size.

I can tell how much you love your '03 SS that you bought with 18k in '08. It sounds like a great car, all black with black leather interior. I think it's awesome that you've added a K&N intake and are planning on an exhaust and ecu chip in the near future. Even though it's a front wheel drive car, it sounds like it's a blast to drive. It's clear that this car is your BABY!!

The car was bought used at 5 years old, but I think it may have been a stroke of bad luck. Unfortunately, the front brake rotors were shot and needed to be replaced, and the front windshield got cracked. However, two weeks later, a Toyota rear-ended me, and although it totaled the Toyota, all my car needed was a little buffing compound. Despite these incidents, overall the car has been pretty reliable, getting 31 mpg on the highway and 22 mpg in the city. Not bad for a V-6!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my recent experience with my 2003 Monte Carlo. I've been pretty happy with it up until this week when I started hearing a slight noise in the engine. Unfortunately, it's gotten worse and I had to take it into the shop. The mechanic informed me that the lifters and camshaft need to be replaced, which would cost $2,500. I'm currently checking around for better pricing, but it seems like this car won't be drivable until this major repair is made. I'm a bit disappointed because I was hoping to get more than 80,000 miles out of it. Anyway, I just wanted to share my experience. Take care!

I really like the style of the car, although I'm not very happy with the way it handles. It feels a bit sloppy, but sort of controlled. It also has the feeling of being very nose heavy up front in cornering maneuvers. Currently, I'm having some steering shaft issues, but the dealer lubed and greased the steering shaft and it seems to be much better. On the bright side, it has great gas mileage and is a real head-turner on the road.
