The Mercury Grand Marquis is an automobile that was produced by Mercury from the 1975 until 2011 model years. Introduced as the flagship sub-model of the Mercury Marquis in 1975, the Grand Marquis became a stand-alone model line in 1983, serving as the largest Mercury sedan. The model line served as the sedan counterpart of the Mercury Colony Park station wagon up to 1991. The fourth generation was the basis of the 2003 and 2004 Mercury Marauder.

From 1979 until 2011, the Grand Marquis shared the rear-wheel drive (RWD) Panther platform with the Ford LTD Crown Victoria (Ford Crown Victoria after 1992), and from 1980, the Lincoln Town Car. For over three decades, the Ford and Mercury sedans were functionally identical, with two of the three generations of the model line sharing the same roofline. The Grand Marquis was available as a four-door sedan for nearly its entire run; from 1988 to its final year in 2011, it was the only body style that was offered. A four-door hardtop was available from 1975 to 1978 and a two-door hardtop coupe from 1975 to 1987.

The Grand Marquis was the second-best-selling Mercury line (after the Cougar) with 2.7 million units produced; at 36 years of continuous production, the Grand Marquis was the longest-running Mercury nameplate (the Cougar, 34 years). Ford manufactured the Grand Marquis, alongside the Mercury Marquis, Mercury Marauder, Ford (LTD) Crown Victoria, and (beginning in 2007) the Lincoln Town Car, at two facilities: the St. Louis Assembly Plant in Hazelwood, Missouri (1979-1985) and the St. Thomas Assembly Plant in Southwold, Ontario, Canada (1986-2011).

Ford announced the discontinuation of the Mercury brand in 2010, but a few 2011 model-year Mercurys were made. The last Grand Marquis - and the final Mercury branded car - was produced on January 4, 2011, at St. Thomas Assembly.

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-06-15
  • VIN: 2MEFM74W16X
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: Around 12 years ago, when my 2006 Marquis, which I purchased brand new, had only approximately 40,000 miles on it, the seatbelt-airbag system warning appeared on the instrument panel and a warning bell sound went off with a 3 beep then 2 beeps/ring tone that would sound whenever the vehicle was started for the next two minutes of driving. It would then stop but the yellow warning icon stays on. On a trip, while driving, it will do this every hour or so or 60 miles of driving, and has done this ever since. (I'm retired and drive very little, my vehicle as of today (5-13-2022) has only 54,462 actual miles on it.) I did some research when it first occurred and learned that the 3 - 2 beeps is a "code 32, seat belt pre-tensioner failure warning and will need immediate service and replacement." So I then called Ford and explained it as above. They told me that it is not their problem and are not acknowledging any responsibility and it will be up to me to see a dealer, which I did. I was told that it would require replacement of both my seat front seat belts, and possibly more including airbag components to the tune of several thousand dollars! I asked them, as I did Ford: As I've had many Ford vehicles, personal and company, several of which I've driven over 200K miles, without ever having a seat belt or airbag component failure, how is this MY problem and not Ford's, especially after only 40K miles? I had asked Ford these two most important questions: 1- "What did I do to CAUSE THIS FAILURE?" and 2- "What could I HAVE DONE TO PREVENT IT?" They refused to answer and only told me that I need to take it to a dealer to have it repaired. I have not pursued it as I didn't have the thousands of dollars the dealer wanted to charge me. This is wrong as it is part of Ford's refusal to acknowledge the faulty components in their seat belt/airbag systems, which has been putting my life at risk ever since their components' failure and Ford needs to be held responsible!

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-29
  • VIN: 2MEFM74W96X
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis. The contact stated that after the vehicle was started and shifted into drive(D), the vehicle lost power steering functionality. The contact stated that excessive force was needed to steer the vehicle. The contact stated that once the vehicle was driving the power steering functionality returned. The contact stated that an unknown warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the steering rack: Part Number: (A, 36-1056N) needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, however, the failure recurred. The contact researched the failure online and related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 13V385000 (Steering). The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.

  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: AIR BAG LIGHT COMES ON AND BLINKS CODE 3 3 THEN DINGS AN ALARM 5 DINGS X 5 TIMES EVERY 30 MINUTES, LIGHT STAYS ON. I UNDERSTAND CODE 33 OR 34 ARE SEAT BELT PRETENTIONERS THAT ARE KNOWN TO FAIL ON MID 2000'S FORD VEHICLES. MINE IS 2006 GRAND MARQUIS. THIS APPEARS TO BE A DEFECT IN MATERIALS CAUSING A SAFTEY CONCERN FOR MYSELF AND PASSENGERS. THE AIR BAG SYSTEM IS DISABLED UNTIL REPAIRED AND THE REPAIR IS VERY EXPENSIVE. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT AND IT HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED AS A DRIVER SIDE PRETENTIONER HIGH RESISTANCE FAILURE. THE MECHANIC SUGGESTED THEY REPLACE BOTH DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE SINCE THE PASSENGER SIDE WILL MOST LIKELY ALSO FAIL SOON ACCORDING TO HIS EXPERIANCE. THIS SHOULD BE RECALLED TO HAVE PRETENSIONERS REPLACED SINCE IT IS A KNOWN DEFECT AND SAFETY HAZARD CAUSED BY FORD PARTS.
