1993 Mercury Tracer problems

mercury logo

The Mercury Tracer is an automobile manufactured and marketed by Ford's Mercury division for model years 1987 through 1999, over three generations in three- and five-door hatchback, four-door sedan, and five-door station wagon configurations.

The first generation was marketed as a subcompact; the two succeeding generations were sold in the compact segment. All three generations derived from the Mazda 323/Protegé.

After 1999, Mercury ended sales of the Tracer; while the Ford Escort was later replaced by the Ford Focus, Mercury exited the compact segment. A planned Tracer fourth generation was projected for 2012, cancelled by the closure of the Mercury brand at the end of 2010.

Common 1993 Mercury Tracer problems

The 1993 Mercury Tracer is known to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. One of the most frequently reported issues is related to the transmission. Owners have reported occasional problems with the transmission, such as jerking when taking off from a stop. This can be a sign of a problem with the transmission's internal components or the torque converter, which may require replacement or overhaul.

Another common issue is related to the engine. The 1993 Mercury Tracer has been reported to have engine problems, with owners mentioning issues such as engine stalling and the need to replace the engine entirely. This could be due to various reasons, such as worn-out internal components, faulty sensors, or ignition system failure.

The car's electrical system has also been reported to have issues, with owners mentioning problems such as engine/transmission sensors shorting out. This can lead to various issues, including poor performance, reduced fuel efficiency, and even complete engine failure.

The heating and ventilation system has also been reported to have issues, with owners mentioning that the heater fan and vent system are not as functional as they used to be. This can be a sign of a problem with the system's internal components, such as the blower motor or the heater core.

The car's interior has also been reported to have issues, with owners mentioning that the seat belt return doesn't stop the seat belt in an easily accessible location anymore. This can be a safety concern and may require replacement or repair of the seat belt system.

Finally, the car's exterior has been reported to have issues, with owners mentioning that the floor is rusting. This can be a sign of a problem with the car's body panels or the undercoating, which may require replacement or repair.

In summary, the 1993 Mercury Tracer has several common problems related to the transmission, engine, electrical system, heating and ventilation system, interior, and exterior. These issues can range from minor inconveniences to major safety concerns, and may require replacement or repair of various components. It is important for owners of this car to be aware of these issues and to address them promptly to ensure the car's safety and reliability.

ONCE THE BOLT DRIFTED OFF, IT WOULD LOOSEN, DROP OFF INTO THE ROAD, AND CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO TAILSPIN. HE STATED THAT HIS FINGERS WERE ABLE TO REACH AND TWIST THE BOLTS. IN ADDITION, THE BOLTS ON THE POWER STEERING DETACHED. HE STATED THAT THERE SHOULD BE A TOTAL OF FOUR BOLTS TO SUPPORT THE AXLE, BUT THERE WERE NOT. STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-12-29
  • VIN: 3MAPM15J4PR
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: TWO BOLTS HOLD THE FRONT AXLE IN PLACE. TWO ON EACH SIDE. THESE '!@#$% BOLTS ARE .43 INCHES IN DIAMETER AND ARE THREADED 20 TPI. (THESE DO NOT CONFORM TO ANY STANDARD BOLT I COULD FIND IN THE LITERATURE, METRIC OR SAE). THESE FOUR BOLTS ARE FITTED WITH CASTELATED NUTS, A VERY GOOD IDEA. HOWEVER, THE BOLT HAD NO HOLE DRILLED FOR THE NECESSARY COTTER PIN. ON MY VEHICLE, THE NUT LOOSENED AND FELL OFF. THE BOLT EVENTUALLY WORKED ITSELF UP AND OUT OF THE HOLE. I WAS GOING 65 MPH ON THE US 5 FREEWAY AND SLOWLY TURNING ON TO THE 405 FREEWAY. THE STEERING OF THE CAR WAS LOST. I ALMOST HIT TWO ADJACENT CARS. THE LEFT FRONT WHEEL WAS POINTING SIDEWAYS, PIVOTING ABOUT THE REMAINING BOLT. HOW I GOT THE CAR STOPPED WITHOUT DAMAGE,I DON"T KNOW. 1. WHY NOBODY IN 13 YEARS DID NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM OF THE MISSING COTTER KEY HOLE. ASK FORD. 2.WHY IN THE YEAR 2007 DOES FORD NOT SELL REPLACEMENT BOLTS OR NUTS, AS THESE ARE '!@#$% PARTS. 3.AS THIS WAS A LEMON RECALL AUTOMOBILE; WHY NOT MAKE THE CORRECTION AT THAT TIME? 4. UPON LOOKING AT THE DAMAGE . I NOTICED THAT THE REMAINING BOLTS (3) WERE VERY LOOSE. IN ADDITION TO THE AXLE BOLTS BEING LOOSE, I NOTICED THAT THE 4 BOLTS THAT HOLD THE POWER STEERING TO THE FIRE WALL WERE LOOSE. 5. I FEEL THAT THE STEERING AND BRAKES ON A CAR ARE IMPORTANT. ENOUGH SAID. 6. AN AUTOMOBILE GETS ONLY ONE CHANCE TO KILL OR HURT ME. I GAVE THE CAR AWAY AFTER MAKING REPAIRS. NO MORE FORDS FOR ME. *JB *TR

Hello! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We're sorry to hear that you haven't been satisfied with your car for the past six years. We understand that you've had some issues with the engine and cabin noise, as well as some mechanical problems such as a broken motor mount, leaky radiator, factory mis-aligned rear wheels, stalling, and transmission shift problems. We can imagine how frustrating that must be. Additionally, you mentioned that the car's acceleration is not as fast as you would like. We appreciate your feedback and hope that we can work together to find a solution that meets your needs. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts with us.

  2. Harold Crist 2024-05-21

I purchased my tracer in 1997, and unfortunately, I had problems with it almost immediately. The biggest issue I've had was with the transmission, which required a replacement. It ended up being very expensive, even though my Dad was able to do most of the work himself. While I wouldn't recommend this car to a friend, I hope my experience can help others make an informed decision.

  3. Timmothy Watsica 2024-04-06

This car is great! You'll be amazed at how much you can fit inside. While the gas mileage isn't as good as some other small models, it still gets 26 MPG for mixed driving and no more than 28 on the highway. The automatic seatbelts can be a bit annoying, but overall it's a reliable choice.

  4. Joel Yost 2024-03-07

After 9 years of owning this car, I've only encountered one major issue - a cracked valve seat at 140,000 miles. Although there have been a few minor problems along the way, I've only spent around $2500 on repairs. Despite this, the car has never left me stranded and always starts up and runs smoothly. Even with the cracked valve seat, it managed to limp 60 miles home on 3 cylinders. While it may not be the most powerful car out there, it still manages to reach 100mph (although I'd recommend turning off the A/C before attempting any half-hearted acceleration). On the plus side, the fuel economy is excellent and the fold-down seats and roof rack have come in handy. Overall, I've had a positive experience with this car and would recommend it to others.

  5. Jamison Tromp 2024-01-15

I really enjoyed driving and owning this car. Unfortunately, after only 18 months of ownership, I experienced some reliability issues. The motor would load up badly after using the a/c, which was a bit disappointing. I was even stranded on the side of the road once. Despite these issues, my family and I loved our little wagon. The mechanic diagnosed a dropped valve and a cracked piston, and advised that it wasn't worth fixing. As a result, it now sits in a junkyard. Although some people have reported transmission problems at around 80-90K miles, I didn't experience any issues even after 170,000 miles. Overall, I would still recommend these cars, despite the problem I had. In fact, I'm planning to purchase another one come tax time!

Positive 1993 Mercury Tracer car reviews

  1. Ed Marks 2024-10-20

The '93 LTS was my very first car and I got an amazing deal for under five grand. It was in fantastic condition, with power locks, windows, mirrors, sunroof, alloys, a spoiler, and a five-speed transmission. I drove it for a month before the transmission failed, but a neighbor helped me fix it by rebuilding the transmission. After that, the car ran flawlessly for 15,000 miles until I decided to replace it with a '99 Olds Alero in October 2002. Unfortunately, I had to sell it the following year and it was later wrecked and destroyed by an irresponsible driver. It was such a shame because the car was in great shape and it was so much fun to drive, especially on mountain roads.

  2. Salvador Johnston 2024-10-03

This is such a reliable car! I bought it brand new and have only had to do minor repairs over the years (nothing over $500). I would definitely recommend it!

  3. Jayme Morissette 2024-05-05

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to let you know that I purchased this car brand new back in 1992 and it has been a great ride so far. It has 95,000 miles on it and I've only had a few minor issues with it. Unfortunately, it seems to be having some transmission problems now. When it's cold, it hesitates a bit and my mechanic has suggested that the transmission needs to be rebuilt or replaced. Despite this, I still think it's a great car and it's always been a lot of fun to drive!

  4. Damian Tromp 2024-04-24

This is a great vehicle! It's simple, reliable, and very economical. It can haul a large amount of luggage or anything you need. Plus, it will run with any traffic on any highway, all day long.

  5. Julio Ullrich 2024-03-26

It sounds like you've had a good experience with your car! The only issue you've encountered is that the brake pads wear out quickly.
