2000 Chevrolet Lumina problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Lumina is a mid-size car that was produced and marketed by the Chevrolet division of General Motors from 1989 until 2001.

Background

The first generation of the Lumina replaced the Chevrolet Celebrity and Chevrolet Monte Carlo under a single nameplate; the mechanically unrelated Chevrolet Lumina APV minivan served as the successor for the Celebrity station wagon. The model line was based on the front-wheel-drive GM10 platform (later designated the GM W platform), shared with Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac. For 1995, the second-generation Lumina was introduced, serving as a substantial exterior revision of the previous generation (the two-door coupe was renamed the Monte Carlo). For the 2000 model year, the Lumina was replaced by the Chevrolet Impala; the model line would retain the W platform through the 2016 model year.

Throughout its production, both generations of the Lumina were produced by General Motors Canada at Oshawa Car Assembly (Oshawa, Ontario). For markets outside of North America, the Chevrolet Lumina was derived from other large GM sedans. From 1998 to 2013, the Lumina was marketed in the Middle East and South Africa as a Chevrolet-badged version of the Holden Commodore produced in Australia. From 2005 to 2006, GM Philippines sold the Lumina as a Chevrolet-badged version of the Buick Regal (sharing much of its body with its American counterpart).

Is a Chevy Lumina a good car?

With a competent car and a pricing structure that undercuts Ford and Chrysler, Chevy's Lumina offers a fine blend of function, value and performance. This is one GM product that was done right the first time, just like the new Malibu, which should be investigated closely by buyers interested in the Lumina.

How long can a Chevy Lumina last?

Most of the 1995's and up that I know of have well over 200,000 miles on and still very strong. I had 278,000 on mine when I sold it. It still ran perfect and everything still worked on the car. The only issue that I had was an intake gasket at 200,000.

Why did Chevy discontinue the Lumina?

In North America Chevrolet discontinued the Lumina in 2000 due to dwindling sales and the success of the reborn Impala. The Lumina nameplate was still used in some markets, in parts of Asia it was applied to the mid-sized Buick Century/Regal and a badge engineered version of the Holden Commodore sports sedan.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-09-20
  • VIN: 2G1WL52JXY1
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: HAD TO CHANGE BATTERY, THIS CAUSES THE ON BOARD COMPUTER TO RESET TO ORIGINAL SETTING. THE TRANSMISSION (4T65E) IS PROGRAMMED TO MAKE SHIFTS AT CERTAIN SPEEDS IN AN ALLOTTED TIME SPAN. BECAUSE NOW, THE CAR (2000 LUMINA) IS OLDER AND THE SHIFTS ARE A LITTLE LONGER THE COMPUTER SENDS MESSAGES TO THE TRANSMISSION TO FORCE PRESSURE ON THE LINES TO CORRECT SPLIT SECOND SHIFTING. THIS CAUSES HARD SHIFTING AND GRINDING SOUNDS. I STOP THE CAR, TURN THE MOTOR OFF, THEN ON AND ITS OK AGAIN FOR A FEW MORE MILES. A TRANSMISSION SHOP WANTS $1400.00 TO FIX PROBLEM, BUT THE PROBLEM IS A NOT SO SMART COMPUTER THAT DOESN'T ALLOW FOR A CAR TO AGE. *TR

A CAR THAT HAS 54,XXX MILES ON IT AND HAS ALWAYS BEEN SERVICED ON TIME SHOULD NOT HAVE THE TRANSMISSION GO OUT. IT HAD A CODE OF 1810 WHEN DIAGNOSTICS WAS DONE TO IT. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-09-20
  • VIN: 1G1ND52JXY6
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I HAVE A 2000 MALIBU AND IT HAS 129K MILES ON IT. THE ANTI-THEFT LIGHT HAS BEEN ON FOR MONTHS AND I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT THE REASON FOR THIS WAS, BUT IT NEVER SEEMED TO AFFECT MY CAR IN ANY WAY. TODAY THE CAR TURNED ON FINE TWICE, ONCE COMING OUT OF THE HOUSE AND THE SECOND TIME COMING OUT OF THE GAS STATION. WHEN I TRY TO TURN IT ON AFTER LEAVING FROM A JOB INTERVIEW, IT CRANKS AS IF IT WANTS TO TURN ON BUT DOESN'T. IT SOUNDS LIKE IF THE GAS TANK IS ON EMPTY BUT IT'S ALMOST FULL. I CHECKED ALL CONNECTIONS AND EVEN TRIED A JUMP START AND IT DIDN'T MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE. FINALLY I GOT IT TOWED HOME AND FIND OUT ON THE INTERNET THAT CHEVY MALIBUS ARE FULL OF DEFECTS.(HTTP://WWW.AUTOSITE.COM/CONTENT/RESEARCH/FORUMS/INDEX.CFM/ACTION/POSTS/FID/1601) (INCLUDING MY AC THAT ONLY WORKS ON 3, 4, AND 5). MY ANTI THEFT DEVICE WON'T LET ME DRIVE MY OWN CAR, AND I ALREADY MISSED AN IMPORTANT CLASS. I'VE BEEN TRYING TO LEAVE THE IGNITION SWITCH IN THE ON POSITION FOR A WHILE UNTIL THE ANTI THEFT LIGHT TURNS OFF, BUT IT NEVER TURNS OFF. IT HAS BARELY STARTED WITH THIS PROBLEM TODAY, BUT AFTER READING ALL OF THE COMPLAINTS, MORE LIKE HORROR STORIES, I'M SCARED OF MY MALIBU AND I DON'T TRUST IT ANYMORE BECAUSE I KNOW IT WILL GET WORSE. I DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO PAY THE DEALER TO FIX AN OBVIOUS PROBLEM THAT THEY KNOW EXISTS BUT WON'T ADMIT TO; THERE NEEDS TO BE A SERIOUS RECALL. *TR

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-08-04
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: WE HAD PURCHASED UNIROYAL TIRES IN OCTOBER 2002 FROM FARM AND FLEET IN LA CROSSE. AS OF AUGUST 4, 2005, ALL THE TIRES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO THE TIRES CRACKING AND PEELING. WE TOOK THE CAR TO SEARS WHERE THEY TOLD US THEY WOULD NOT LET US DRIVE THE CAR DUE THE SEVERITY OF THE PEELING OF THE TIRES. DRIVING OUR CAR WITH THE TIRES IN THE POOR CONDITION COULD CAUSE AND ACCIDENT AND INJURY. I STARTED HAVING A PANIC ATTACK AFTER HEARING THIS NEWS. WE WERE TOLD THAT THIS IS NOT NORMAL FOR TIRES TO SHRED, CRACK, AND PEEL AT ONLY 40,000 MILES. I CALLED FARM AND FLEET WHERE WE BOUGHT THE TIRES AND HE TOLD ME "TOO BAD" AND HUNG UP ON ME. I CALLED UNIROYAL AND SHE SAID IT IS NOT THEIR PROBLEM IF OUR TIRES CRACKED, THAT'S WHAT TIRES DO. THESE TIRES THAT CRACKED, PEELED, AND SHREDDED HAVE A 75,000 MILES WARRANTY, NOONE WILL HONOR THIS WARRANTY AND WE HAD TO SPEND OVER $400 BUYING NEW TIRES. *NM

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-04-04
  • Crash: 1
  • Fire: 1
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: I OWN A 2000 CHEVROLET ASTRO VAN WHICH I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DRIVE FOR OVER A YEAR BECAUSE OF MALFUNCTIONING ANTILOCK BRAKES. I BROUGHT IT TO BE REPAIRED LAST YEAR AND PAID OVER $800 FOR ONE SET OF BRAKES, THE OTHER SET STILL NEEDS TO BE FIXED. THE ANTILOCK BRAKES PREVENT THE VEHICLE FROM STOPPING WHEN TRAVELING AT SLOW SPEEDS. THIS IS A DEFINITE SAFETY PROBLEM. THERE HAS BEEN A SERVICE BULLETIN FOR THIS PROBLEM ON THIS VEHICLE SINCE 2002. THERE IS CURRENTLY AN INVESTIGATION OF THIS VERY PROBLEM ON SIMILAR CHEVY SUVS AND TRUCKS, BUT NOT INCLUDING THE ASTRO VAN.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-05-09
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: I PURCHASED MY 2000 CHEVY MALIBU WITH 8,000 MILES AND STILL UNDER WARRANTY. I WAS VERY HAPPY WITH IT UNTIL RECENTLY. EVEN THOUGH I FAITHFULLY CHANGE THE OIL EVERY 3,000 MILES I AM NOW EXPERIENCING MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH 65,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE WHICH I AM STILL PAYING OFF. I WAS TOLD BY MY MECHANIC THAT GMC HAD AN ISSUE WITH THE ENGINE THAT IS IN MY VEHICLE. IT NOW HAS AN INTAKE VALUE FAILURE AND PISTON PROBLEMS. I HAVE OWNED MANY OTHER VECHILES AND AS LONG AS I MAINTAINED THEM THEY RAN GREAT UNTIL 100,000 PLUS MILES. WHAT IS THE PROBLEM AND WHY IS THERE NOT A RECALL ON THIS ENGINE? NOT IMPRESSED. I THOUGHT GOING GMC WOULD GIVE ME A RELIABLE VEHICLE. I NOW HAVE TO PUT IN OVER $1,000 OR REPLACE THE ENGINE FOR $3,000 TO $4,000. WHEN I GO TO PURCHASE ANOTHER VEHILE I WILL KEEP THIS IN MIND!!!!!

Negative 2000 Chevrolet Lumina car reviews

  1. Oda Carter 2024-09-09

This car may not be the flashiest or most luxurious, but it's a reliable and dependable vehicle that keeps on running. If you're tired of constantly returning to the dealership, then the Lumina is the perfect car for you. I've personally owned a Lumina for four years and have had nothing but positive experiences with it. While my next car may be more visually appealing, I hope it can match the reliability of the '99 Lumina.

  2. Macey Beahan 2024-06-26

I've had this car for over two years and have only changed the oil until today. However, the original radiator is rotting at the bottom and starting to leak. Despite this, I'm not too worried since it's a 10-year old car. The only issue I have with this vehicle is the unusually wide turning radius. My 2001 Grand Prix turned a lot tighter than this.

I purchased this LTZ brand new in January of 1999. During the test drive, I was immediately impressed by the LTZ's torque, handling, and ride. The 200HP 3.8 V6 engine and the 'stiff' cop car-like ride have made this car a favorite of mine. Even after four and a half years and 143,000 miles, this car is still going strong. The engine is durable and runs smoothly without needing a tune-up yet! The only mechanical issues I have experienced were an alternator replacement at 82,000 miles and a transmission rebuild at 138,000 miles. I believe the transmission issue was caused by a mistake made during a filter change at 70,000 miles. I am the proud owner of this car and hope to keep it running for another 50-60,000 miles at least.

I inherited my Lumina from my mom, who had the car since 2002. I haven't experienced any mechanical problems with it. As a delivery driver in college, I've been pleasantly surprised by its gas mileage. It may not be flashy, but it gets you from point A to point B quite well. The only issue I have is that it only has one cupholder. Overall, if given the chance, I think I would get another one.

Smooth quite ride, reliable family sedan with lots of trunk space and roomy for a midsize vehicle.

I own the LTZ model and I absolutely love it! The body styling is so sleek and the lines of the car blend together perfectly. While the ride could be a little more stiff, the stock suspension feels just fine. I highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a reliable and comfortable ride. The interior is smooth and the seats are incredibly comfortable. The pickup is fantastic and overall, this car is just amazing!

They're even good enough for the police! This is my second Lumina since '98, and I drive my cars hard. The first Lumina had 75,000 miles on it when it was wrecked, and this one has 91,000 and is still going strong. I haven't had any major maintenance problems with either one, just routine brake maintenance, oil changes, and so on. As a matter of fact, I only had the first tune-up done on this LTZ in June, and the car had 86,000 miles on it then!

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2nd Lumina, which I purchased as a 1-year-old car from Avis Auto Rental. I have a 46-mile commute every day, with about 1/3 of it in the city and the other 2/3 on the freeway. I am so happy to report that I am averaging an unbelievable 28 MPG! I have had no problems with either vehicle that required dealer service, except for a front brake job at 60K miles on my 2nd car. What's more, my 1999 car still has the original tires with legal tread, even though I have already driven it for 73k miles! I am particularly impressed with the front-wheel-drive system, which has never let me down even when I drive on mountain dirt roads or in snowy conditions. I think Chevy deserves a GOLD STAR for designing such a well-made, basic sedan. Thanks for reading!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with the Lumina. As someone who works in sales, I've never owned a car as dependable as the Lumina. This is actually my second Lumina! It's amazing to think that, as of this writing, it has just over 250,000 miles and I haven't even had to change a hose under the hood. I just make sure to keep that oil changed every 4000 miles. It's been such a reliable car and I'm so grateful for it.

I have been quite happy with my 1999 Chevrolet Lumina, although I would suggest that the seats are not sufficiently comfortable for long-haul driving.
