2005 Chevrolet Aveo problems
The Chevrolet Aveo (/əˈveɪ.oʊ/ ə-VAY-oh) is a five-passenger, front-drive subcompact car (B-segment) marketed by General Motors (GM) since 2002 over two generations. Originally developed by South Korean manufacturer Daewoo Motors and marketed as the Daewoo Kalos, the takeover of Daewoo by GM to form GM Daewoo Auto & Technology (GMDAT) resulted in the car's marketing in 120 countries under seven brands (Chevrolet, Daewoo, ZAZ, Holden, Pontiac, Ravon and Suzuki) — prominently as the Aveo.
The second-generation Aveo, developed by GM Korea (formerly GMDAT), was introduced in 2011 and was also marketed as the Chevrolet Sonic in markets including the Americas, Japan, Middle East, South Africa and several Southeast Asian markets. Production of the second-generation model ended in October 2020.
Since 2017, GM marketed the Chinese market Chevrolet Sail sedan in Mexico and other Central American countries as the Aveo. Developed by GM PATAC in China and produced by joint venture SAIC-GM, it was positioned below the more advanced Sonic. In 2023, GM imported a new version to Mexico in a sedan and hatchback form, developed and manufactured by another Chinese joint venture, SAIC-GM-Wuling.

Common 2005 Chevrolet Aveo problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 2005 Chevrolet Aveo, several common problems have been reported:
- Transmission Shifting Difficulty: Owners have reported difficulties with shifting gears, particularly from 1st to 2nd gear, which can persist even after adjusting the clutch. This issue can affect the driving experience and may require professional diagnosis and repair.
- Turn Signal Switch Malfunction: The turn signals in the 2004-2009 and 2011 Chevrolet Aveo models may not work correctly due to a malfunctioning switch, causing them to stay on or off instead of blinking as intended. This can pose a safety hazard while driving and needs to be addressed to ensure proper signaling.
- Cold Start Problems: Some owners have experienced issues with cold starts, where the car refuses to start in the mornings despite cranking, requiring multiple attempts before starting once the engine heats up. This problem can be frustrating and may indicate underlying issues with components like the fuel system or sensors.
- Engine Compression Loss: Reports of no compression in one cylinder have been noted, potentially leading to engine performance issues and the need for significant repairs. Loss of compression can affect the overall functioning of the engine and may require thorough inspection and repair.
- Electrical System and Lighting Concerns: Various complaints have been submitted regarding electrical system issues, exterior lighting malfunctions, and problems with the airbags and other safety features. These issues can impact the overall safety and functionality of the vehicle and should be addressed promptly.
These common problems reported by owners of the 2005 Chevrolet Aveo highlight the importance of regular maintenance, timely repairs, and thorough inspections to ensure the vehicle's reliability and safety on the road.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-02-21
- VIN: KL1TD62605B
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: THE MILEAGE AND SPEED ARE APPROXIMATE. I WAS BACKING OUT OF MY ICE AND SNOW COVERED DRIVEWAY IN FEBRUARY 2015. THERE IS A SMALL DIP WHERE MY DRIVEWAY MEETS THE STREET SO I ACCELERATED SO AS NOT TO GET MY TIRES STUCK IN THE ICY DIP. AS I WAS BACKING MY CAR INTO THE STREET, AND MY CAR WAS IN THE LANE OF TRAFFIC THE CAR SHUT OFF. I WAS UNABLE TO RESTART THE CAR. MY NEIGHBOR, AND ANOTHER GENTLEMAN WHO STOPPED TO HELP, PUSHED MY CAR BACK INTO MY DRIVEWAY. I ATTEMPTED TO START THE CAR SEVERAL TIMES AFTER THE INCIDENT. THE CAR NEVER AGAIN STARTED. I BORROWED A VEHICLE UNTIL I HAD ENOUGH MONEY TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED TO A MECHANIC FOR REPAIRS. A MECHANIC LOOKED AT MY VEHICLE AND TOLD ME ON MAY 11, 2015 THAT THE CAR NEEDS A NEW ENGINE, THE PRICE OF WHICH IS $4,823.00. THE MECHANIC FURTHER TOLD ME THAT THE AFTERMARKET/REMANUFACTURED ENGINES COMPANY THEY DEAL WITH DOES NOT HAVE AN ENGINE FOR THIS MAKE AND MODEL CAR BECAUSE THIS ENGINE HAS SO MANY PROBLEMS THAT THE COMPANY WILL NOT TOUCH IT. I BELIEVE THAT THE OEM ENGINE HAS SERIOUS DEFECTS THAT HAVE BEEN OVERLOOKED DUE TO THE LACK OF REPORTING AND LACK OF SERIOUS INJURY ASSOCIATED WITH THE DEFECT/FAILURE. MY CAR HAS SHUT OFF ON ME ON THREE DIFFERENT DAYS WITHIN AN APPROXIMATE SIX MONTH PERIOD. I HAD A MECHANIC LOOK AT THE CAR TO FIGURE OUT WHY IT WAS SHUTTING OFF ON ME IN TRAFFIC AND THERE WAS NO INDICATOR OF ANY ISSUE. MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT NEVER CAME ON, EVEN AFTER THE RECENT ENGINE FAILURE. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS ENGINE. *TR

THE DEALER ADVISED THAT NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V261000 (EXTERIOR LIGHTING) WOULD ONLY REPAIR THE DRL MODULE AND IT WOULD NOT REPLACE ANY ADDITIONAL FAILURE CAUSED BY THE RECALL. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE ENGINE VALVE COVER GASKET WAS DEFECTIVE AND CAUSED THE ENGINE FLUID TO LEAK. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. Congratulations on your brand new car! It's great to hear that you had a smooth 1306-mile drive from Tampa Florida to Detroit Michigan. It sounds like the Aveo is a reliable car, especially on the freeway and mountains. It's also wonderful to hear that your coworkers and friends love it too. With its spacious interior and user-friendly dash, it's no surprise that strangers have asked you about it. Even though the gas mileage in the city isn't the best, it's still a great car to have. It's fantastic that you're enjoying your first Chevy and I hope it continues to impress you!
-
The car is an amazing little beast. It may not have a lot of power, but it's a 4 cylinder, so it has plenty for its size. Additionally, it has lots of room for bigger people, especially leg and head room. You'll never feel cramped when riding in it.
-
Having had a variety of cars, including some in the higher price ranges like Lexus, I was in search of an affordable car for my daily commute. The Aveo has been a great choice so far, providing a comfortable ride. The only issue I have encountered is with the tires, which do not offer much handling on icy or snowy roads. However, the car starts easily even in very cold weather, runs quietly, and has a good radio, ABS, and automatic transmission. Additionally, the interior space is impressive, making it a great value for the low price.
-
I'm so excited to share that I finally got my hands on this amazing little car that I've been researching for a while now! I was torn between the Aveo and the Scion Xa, but the Aveo won me over with its great price. I've had some bad experiences with GM cars in the past, but this Daewoo-built Aveo seems to be really well put together with tight seams and no squeaks or rattles. It's an absolute blast to drive, especially in the city where it really shines. Even at high speeds, it's surprisingly quiet and cruises comfortably at 80 with minimal fuss. While I'm not blown away by the fuel economy at 27 MPG (I get that from my V6 Honda Accord and feel the push in the back of the seat!), I still love driving it around. It makes me feel like I'm back in London again! The size is just perfect for me.
-
I absolutely love my Chevy Aveo! It has been one of the most reliable cars I have ever owned, with over 40,000 miles on it and not a single trip to the repair shop. I have taken it on long trips across the country, even over mountains, and it has never let me down. The car handles beautifully, even at high speeds of 85 mph, and I have never experienced any discomfort while driving it. The only time I have taken it to the shop was for an oil change, which was a breeze. One of the things I love most about this car is its amazing turning radius, which allows me to make U-turns in even the tightest spots. Overall, driving this car is an absolute joy!

The best features of this vehicle are its reliability and gas mileage. These were the most important factors for me as I drive 100 miles round trip to work every weekday. The storage space is very good, both inside the car and in the trunk. Although it can be a bit noisy on the highway and lacks power going up hills, it still drives pretty well overall. I haven't had any major problems, just some issues with bad tires, which may be due to the car itself. The price reflects the basic features of the car, with no power options and just an AM/FM radio. However, it serves its purpose of getting me to and from work just fine, and the unbeatable price makes it a great value.
Dallin Beahan 2024-10-05
I have had a disappointing experience with this car. It has been in the shop three times in the last year, from a fuel pump to the transmission. Additionally, the gear ratio prevents the transmission from shifting from 2nd to 3rd if the temperature is below 65 degrees, causing the transmission to rev up to an unhealthy sound just to go down a 40mph street. Despite being promised almost 40mpg, the most I have gotten is 34 on an open freeway cruise set at 60mph. As a result, I regret buying this car and am now trying to sell it. I have decided to explore other options and will not be purchasing from Chevy again.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to touch base with you about the car I purchased from your dealership. I absolutely fell in love with it before I even bought it, especially since it's one of the few that were painted key lime green from the factory. However, after driving it for a month or two, I've noticed that there seems to be some vibrations and the interior door handles are a bit loose. Additionally, the black appliques on the rear doors are buckling. I brought these issues to your attention back in May of 06, but unfortunately, I haven't heard back from you yet. I was wondering if there's any update on when the parts will be ordered and the issues can be fixed? Thank you so much for your help and I look forward to hearing from you soon!

You name it, it has gone out or broke while driving. I got this car for my daughter hoping it would be a good one. All I can say is thank God she is alive and hasn't been killed by this car. There was a reason why I don't buy Chevys.

Hey there! I wanted to share my experience with this car. Unfortunately, at around 70,000 miles, the alternator and serpentine belt stopped working. Shortly after, there was a loud pop and the engine blew. The 'L' shaped piece that connects the engine to the radiator actually blew out of the engine. Sadly, it wasn't covered under warranty and I still have another year of payments left. Based on my experience, I wouldn't recommend buying this car.
