1990 Chevrolet Lumina problems
The Chevrolet Lumina is a mid-size car that was produced and marketed by the Chevrolet division of General Motors from 1989 until 2001.
Background
The first generation of the Lumina replaced the Chevrolet Celebrity and Chevrolet Monte Carlo under a single nameplate; the mechanically unrelated Chevrolet Lumina APV minivan served as the successor for the Celebrity station wagon. The model line was based on the front-wheel-drive GM10 platform (later designated the GM W platform), shared with Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac. For 1995, the second-generation Lumina was introduced, serving as a substantial exterior revision of the previous generation (the two-door coupe was renamed the Monte Carlo). For the 2000 model year, the Lumina was replaced by the Chevrolet Impala; the model line would retain the W platform through the 2016 model year.
Throughout its production, both generations of the Lumina were produced by General Motors Canada at Oshawa Car Assembly (Oshawa, Ontario). For markets outside of North America, the Chevrolet Lumina was derived from other large GM sedans. From 1998 to 2013, the Lumina was marketed in the Middle East and South Africa as a Chevrolet-badged version of the Holden Commodore produced in Australia. From 2005 to 2006, GM Philippines sold the Lumina as a Chevrolet-badged version of the Buick Regal (sharing much of its body with its American counterpart).

Common 1990 Chevrolet Lumina problems
The 1990 Chevrolet Lumina has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the most frequently reported issues is with the rear brakes, specifically the calipers and pads, which have been replaced multiple times by some owners.
Another common issue with the 1990 Lumina is engine problems. Some owners have reported that the engine will stall or die while driving, especially when the car is getting warm.
Additionally, the 1990 Lumina has been reported to have issues with the paint, with the clear coat peeling off over time. This can be a cosmetic issue, but it can also lead to further problems with the car's exterior if not addressed.
The ignition switch has also been reported to be a problem in some 1990 Luminas. Some owners have reported that the engine will continue to run even when the ignition is turned off and the battery cables are disconnected. This can be a safety issue, as it can make it difficult to turn off the car when necessary.
Overall, the 1990 Chevrolet Lumina has been reported to have several common problems, including issues with the rear brakes, engine, paint, and ignition switch. These issues can range from cosmetic to safety concerns, and some may require significant repairs or replacement of parts.
Is a Chevy Lumina a good car?
With a competent car and a pricing structure that undercuts Ford and Chrysler, Chevy's Lumina offers a fine blend of function, value and performance. This is one GM product that was done right the first time, just like the new Malibu, which should be investigated closely by buyers interested in the Lumina.
How long can a Chevy Lumina last?
Most of the 1995's and up that I know of have well over 200,000 miles on and still very strong. I had 278,000 on mine when I sold it. It still ran perfect and everything still worked on the car. The only issue that I had was an intake gasket at 200,000.
Why did Chevy discontinue the Lumina?
In North America Chevrolet discontinued the Lumina in 2000 due to dwindling sales and the success of the reborn Impala. The Lumina nameplate was still used in some markets, in parts of Asia it was applied to the mid-sized Buick Century/Regal and a badge engineered version of the Holden Commodore sports sedan.

I purchased this car back in '96, and it had 190,000 miles on it. This week, it just turned over 244,800+ miles and is still going, just not as strong as it used to. It gets about 19-20 MPG around town and 27-29 MPG on the highway. Although I had to replace a few parts due to age, I didn't experience any major problems until about 2 years ago. Within the last 2-3 years, I've replaced the heater core, fuel pump, radiator, rack & pinion, power steering pump, and water pump. I'm getting ready to sell it because I'm ready for something newer with lower miles, but it has been a dependable mode of transportation for daily use around town.
-
The Lumina was the first car I owned. I purchased it in '97 with 125K miles. We drove this car everywhere, from NY to Canada to the South - you name it! It was a great car with great performance. Although brakes wear is a trend with Lumina, it wasn't a big deal. The gas mileage is decent for a used car. Sadly, we retired the car at 276K miles!! The original engine and transmission were still going strong. GM did an excellent job with this car, and I will forever remember it.
-
Of all the years you've driven this car, you've never had any major problems. You've had the fuel pump go, but that was all. The car is roomy, comfortable, and has a good trunk size.
-
I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my 1990 Lumina. I've loved it since the beginning! It always starts up and runs like a champ. It's got a little bit of sportiness to it and the 3.1 engine is really responsive and powerful. Even though it's got 124,600 miles on it now, it's not quite as good as it was when it was new, but it still has plenty of get-up-and-go when you need it!
-
I bought my Lumina 2 years ago. It was already 18 years old, but it only had 90,000 miles on it. Although I wasn't too keen on it when I first saw it, I was really impressed once I took it for a spin. I got a really good deal on it too! Since then, I've put 55,000 miles on it and I haven't had any problems besides the brakes. It's a really well-made car and it's so much fun to drive. It handles the road really well and has all the power I need and more. I can always rely on it to get me where I need to go, and it looks great when it's all cleaned up. Even though it's now 20 years old, it's still one of the best vehicles I've ever owned! It's just so well-made...

Hey there! I noticed that my Lumina is not in the best shape. When I first bought it, everything was great, but I never really took care of it. The good news is that the 3.1L engine is very easy to fix. I even got into a car accident and totaled the other car, but my Lumina started up and drove away like a champ! I also had an experience with water - the water was all the way up to the bottom of the doors and the engine was partly submerged, but it started JUST GREAT and ran awesome! However, I have a transmission leak, which I've heard is pretty common for my model of Lumina. Overall, I'm still pretty happy with my car and I'm looking forward to fixing it up. Let me know if you have any tips or advice!
Danial Quitzon 2024-04-22
This car may not win any beauty contests, but it more than makes up for it in reliability! No matter what you put it through, it refuses to quit running. I've put it through a lot, from toting my dogs around to being hit by a deer, and even being left in the woods with the windows down in the rain by the previous owner. At 147,000 miles, the ride can be a little dicey at times, but that's to be expected with any geriatric car!

I think that, as a young adult, the outer body of this car is quite large and unattractive. However, I must say that I appreciate its reliability, as it gets me from point A to point B with moderate gas consumption.
