1991 Chevrolet Lumina problems
The Chevrolet Lumina is a mid-size car that was produced and marketed by the Chevrolet division of General Motors from 1989 until 2001.
Background
The first generation of the Lumina replaced the Chevrolet Celebrity and Chevrolet Monte Carlo under a single nameplate; the mechanically unrelated Chevrolet Lumina APV minivan served as the successor for the Celebrity station wagon. The model line was based on the front-wheel-drive GM10 platform (later designated the GM W platform), shared with Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac. For 1995, the second-generation Lumina was introduced, serving as a substantial exterior revision of the previous generation (the two-door coupe was renamed the Monte Carlo). For the 2000 model year, the Lumina was replaced by the Chevrolet Impala; the model line would retain the W platform through the 2016 model year.
Throughout its production, both generations of the Lumina were produced by General Motors Canada at Oshawa Car Assembly (Oshawa, Ontario). For markets outside of North America, the Chevrolet Lumina was derived from other large GM sedans. From 1998 to 2013, the Lumina was marketed in the Middle East and South Africa as a Chevrolet-badged version of the Holden Commodore produced in Australia. From 2005 to 2006, GM Philippines sold the Lumina as a Chevrolet-badged version of the Buick Regal (sharing much of its body with its American counterpart).

Common 1991 Chevrolet Lumina problems
The Chevrolet Lumina, introduced in 1990, was a midsize coupe and sedan that served as the replacement for the aging Chevrolet Celebrity.
One common problem reported by owners of the Chevrolet Lumina is related to the intake manifold gaskets, which may leak coolant or engine oil. This issue can lead to engine overheating, reduced performance, and even complete engine failure if not addressed promptly.
Another problem that has been reported by Lumina owners is related to the A/C and heating systems. For instance, one owner of a 1998 Lumina with a 3.1L engine reported issues with both the A/C and heat not functioning properly, despite replacing the controls and charging the R134a.
In addition to these specific issues, the Lumina was generally criticized for its lackluster performance and outdated styling compared to its competitors. Despite these issues, the Lumina remained in production until the 2000 model year, long after its competitors had been redesigned multiple times.
It is important to note that while these issues have been reported by some Lumina owners, not all vehicles of this make and model will experience these problems. Proper maintenance and care can help to mitigate many of these issues and extend the life of the vehicle.
Is a Chevy Lumina a good car?
With a competent car and a pricing structure that undercuts Ford and Chrysler, Chevy's Lumina offers a fine blend of function, value and performance. This is one GM product that was done right the first time, just like the new Malibu, which should be investigated closely by buyers interested in the Lumina.
How long can a Chevy Lumina last?
Most of the 1995's and up that I know of have well over 200,000 miles on and still very strong. I had 278,000 on mine when I sold it. It still ran perfect and everything still worked on the car. The only issue that I had was an intake gasket at 200,000.
Why did Chevy discontinue the Lumina?
In North America Chevrolet discontinued the Lumina in 2000 due to dwindling sales and the success of the reborn Impala. The Lumina nameplate was still used in some markets, in parts of Asia it was applied to the mid-sized Buick Century/Regal and a badge engineered version of the Holden Commodore sports sedan.
What is the 0 60 on a 1991 Chevy Lumina?
Lumina Z34
Performance figures included a 0-60 mph (0–97 km/h) time of 7.1 seconds, a 1/4 mile (~400 m) time of 15.5 seconds, a (limited) top speed of 113 mph, and a lateral acceleration of 0.79 g (7.7 m/s²).

I recently purchased a torch red 1991 Chevy Lumina Z34 for $2000. Despite being 12 years old and having 134K miles on it, it still performs remarkably well. Its stylish good looks never fail to turn heads, making me feel like I got the better end of the deal. However, my main priority was reliability. Living in Minnesota where we experience below freezing weather for 3 months of the year, I needed a car that could get me to school, work, and back home safely. Thankfully, this car has proven to be just that!
-
Now have 220000 miles and still no problems. I have replaced the alternator, water pump, and brakes (normal wear). It has great mileage, is very reliable, and cheap to run.
-
I've owned this car for almost four years now and I still love it just as much as the day I bought it. It's fast, comfortable, has an awesome loud exhaust sound, and a great stereo. Although it's had a few minor problems like the fuel pressure regulator, TCC solenoid, and spark plug wires, it's been close to perfect otherwise. The brakes are great, contrary to what some say. I've never had to touch them in four years and they don't make any sound or hesitation. It's a very roomy car and mine fits six people nicely.
-
I've had my Lumina for five years and it's been running great. Although I had to have some work done on it when it hit 100,000 miles, it's been trouble-free ever since. Unfortunately, in 2002, the air conditioner broke and since I live in Florida, I decided to sell it. Now, with 140,000 miles on it, it's still running great. I'm going to miss it.
-
I hope this message finds you well! I wanted to share my experience with this vehicle that I purchased from the original owner. He only parted with it due to a death in the family, and he spoke so highly of it. I've had it for three years now, and I must say, it has been a great vehicle! I've had to give it a brake job twice, as it likes to wear out the front pads, but with 178,000 miles on the engine, it still runs strong. It's a great highway cruiser, and it handles turns and corners very well. The body is solid, and although I've recently encountered a small area starting to develop some rust, I still recommend the purchase of this vehicle. Thank you for taking the time to read my message!

It's unfortunate that the fuel pumps have been a common problem and should be recalled. Additionally, the interior seems to fall apart easily and there are issues with bad injectors and other components. However, when everything is running smoothly, it's a great car with plenty of interior room. I also experienced issues with the door handles breaking twice, which is concerning. Overall, it's a good car with some areas for improvement.
Deon Hills 2024-03-18
This car has had some issues in the past 3 years, including problems with the rear brakes, radiator, coolant system, intake manifold, and fuel pump and lines. However, it handles great with the 3.1L engine, has excellent visibility, and boasts the best AC and heating systems I've ever experienced. The AC is so powerful that it can freeze you in just 2 minutes! Overall, this car has its flaws, but it still has some impressive features.
Elmo Metz 2024-01-16
Although I have encountered several issues with my car since purchasing it, I have taken the necessary steps to address each problem as it arises. I have replaced the calipers, door handles, and belt, and have also repaired the seat belt, hood release, transmission line, and pan gasket. My car is now in excellent condition and I am confident in its reliability.
