2001 Chevrolet Lumina problems
The Chevrolet Lumina is a mid-size car that was produced and marketed by the Chevrolet division of General Motors from 1989 until 2001.
Background
The first generation of the Lumina replaced the Chevrolet Celebrity and Chevrolet Monte Carlo under a single nameplate; the mechanically unrelated Chevrolet Lumina APV minivan served as the successor for the Celebrity station wagon. The model line was based on the front-wheel-drive GM10 platform (later designated the GM W platform), shared with Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac. For 1995, the second-generation Lumina was introduced, serving as a substantial exterior revision of the previous generation (the two-door coupe was renamed the Monte Carlo). For the 2000 model year, the Lumina was replaced by the Chevrolet Impala; the model line would retain the W platform through the 2016 model year.
Throughout its production, both generations of the Lumina were produced by General Motors Canada at Oshawa Car Assembly (Oshawa, Ontario). For markets outside of North America, the Chevrolet Lumina was derived from other large GM sedans. From 1998 to 2013, the Lumina was marketed in the Middle East and South Africa as a Chevrolet-badged version of the Holden Commodore produced in Australia. From 2005 to 2006, GM Philippines sold the Lumina as a Chevrolet-badged version of the Buick Regal (sharing much of its body with its American counterpart).

Common 2001 Chevrolet Lumina problems
The Chevrolet Lumina, produced from 1990 to 2001, is known for its reliability and value, but like any car, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the 2001 Chevrolet Lumina, based on complaints from owners:
- No-Start Problems: Some Lumina owners have reported that their cars refuse to start, with the most common causes being a faulty alternator, starter, or battery, dirty connections, ignition system issues, or fuel system problems. These issues can be resolved by replacing the faulty components, cleaning connections, or repairing the ignition or fuel system.
- Intermittent Starting: Some Lumina owners have reported that their cars sometimes start and sometimes don't, with no apparent reason. This issue can be caused by a faulty starter motor, a weak battery, or a damaged ignition switch.
- Squeaking Rear Suspension: Some Lumina owners have reported that their cars have a squeaking noise coming from the rear suspension, which can be caused by worn-out rear struts or springs. This issue can be resolved by replacing the faulty components.
- Pinging Noise: Some Lumina owners have reported that their cars make a pinging noise while going up hills, which can be caused by a faulty engine knock sensor or low-octane fuel. This issue can be resolved by replacing the faulty sensor or using high-octane fuel.
- Body Panel Gaps: Some Lumina owners have reported that the body panel gaps on their cars are not uniform, which can be caused by poor assembly or design flaws. This issue can be resolved by having a body shop adjust the gaps or replacing the affected panels.
- Power Steering Noise: Some Lumina owners have reported that their cars have a noise coming from the power steering system, which can be caused by low power steering fluid levels or a faulty power steering pump. This issue can be resolved by topping up the fluid or replacing the faulty pump.
- Faulty ABS Sensor: Some Lumina owners have reported that their cars have a faulty ABS sensor, which can cause the ABS warning light to come on and the ABS system to malfunction. This issue can be resolved by replacing the faulty sensor.
- Faulty Oxygen Sensor: Some Lumina owners have reported that their cars have a faulty oxygen sensor, which can cause the check engine light to come on and affect the car's fuel efficiency. This issue can be resolved by replacing the faulty sensor.
- Faulty Ignition Coil: Some Lumina owners have reported that their cars have a faulty ignition coil, which can cause the car to misfire and lose power. This issue can be resolved by replacing the faulty coil.
In summary, the 2001 Chevrolet Lumina is known for its reliability and value, but like any car, it has its share of common problems. The most frequently reported issues with the Lumina include engine overheating, no-start problems, intermittent starting, squeaking rear suspension, pinging noise, body panel gaps, power steering noise, faulty ABS sensor, faulty oxygen sensor, and faulty ignition coil. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can help prevent these issues and keep the Lumina running smoothly.
Is a Chevy Lumina a good car?
With a competent car and a pricing structure that undercuts Ford and Chrysler, Chevy's Lumina offers a fine blend of function, value and performance. This is one GM product that was done right the first time, just like the new Malibu, which should be investigated closely by buyers interested in the Lumina.
How long can a Chevy Lumina last?
Most of the 1995's and up that I know of have well over 200,000 miles on and still very strong. I had 278,000 on mine when I sold it. It still ran perfect and everything still worked on the car. The only issue that I had was an intake gasket at 200,000.
Why did Chevy discontinue the Lumina?
In North America Chevrolet discontinued the Lumina in 2000 due to dwindling sales and the success of the reborn Impala. The Lumina nameplate was still used in some markets, in parts of Asia it was applied to the mid-sized Buick Century/Regal and a badge engineered version of the Holden Commodore sports sedan.

- VIN: 2G1W\52J711
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: JULY 2009 I WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AT AROUND 75 MPH WHEN THE ENGINE DIED AND WOULDN'T START, PULLED OFF THE ROAD, ENGINE WOULD CRANK BUT NOT START, AFTER A FEW MINUTES IT STARTED AND I DROVE HOME. I CALLED A MECHANIC AND HE SAID IT PROBABLY WAS THE IGNITION CONTROL MODULE, GO TO THE JUNK YARD AND GET ONE. FROM THEN THROUGH DECEMBER 2012 I REPLACED THE IGNITION MODULE THREE TIMES. IN DECEMBER 2012 I REPLACED BOTH THE MODULE AND THE CRANK POSITIONING SENSOR, THINKING THAT IT COULD BE CAUSING THE MODULE FAILURE. THREE MONTHS LATER THE ENGINE DIED AGAIN I HAD THE MODULE TESTED, IT WAS OK, HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALER, THEY CHECKED IT FOR THREE DAYS AND SAID THE HEAT FROM THE ENGINE HAD MADE THE CRANK POSITIONING SENSOR TO SEPARATE INTERNALLY AND IT WAS REPLACED AGAIN. CAR RAN FINE FOR THREE WEEKS AND WOULDN'T START AFTER DRIVING AROUND TOWN LET IT SIT FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS, STARTED UP ON THE FIRST TRY DROVE IT HOME. APRIL 2013 MY JUDGMENT TELLS ME THAT THE PLUG TO THE POSITIONING SENSOR IS THE PROBLEM, WHEN ENGINE IS HOT THE PLUG EITHER OPENS UP OR SHORTS OUT FROM LIQUID FROM THE ENGINE. I CHECKED WITH THE PARTS MAN AND HE SAID HE HAD SOLD ONE POSITIONING SENSOR ALL YEAR (MINE) AND SOLD 30 PLUGS GOING TO IT, I'M REPLACING MY PLUG! *TR

I AM REALLY CONCERNED WHEN IT MIGHT EXPLODE W/O A CRASH OR IF THERE IS A DRIVER SIDE CRASH IF IT WILL COME OUT TO PROTECT ME. STEERING AND FRONT SUSPENSION POPS. AT 55,117 MILES WE HAD THE OIL CHANGED (WHICH HAS BEEN DONE EVERY 3000 MILES) OR LESS AND ON THE MULTI POINT INSPECTION SHEET, IT LISTED SEVERAL THINGS THAT "MIGHT NEED ATTENTION" SOON. THEY ARE STEERING LINKAGE AND STEERING COMPONENTS, CV AXLE BOOTS OR DRIVE SHAFT AND U JOINTS. THESE THINGS SHOULD NOT BE WORN OUT ON A CAR WITH NO MORE MILES THAN THIS. MY REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER DOESN'T WORK. NOTICED THIS AFTER ONE OF THE AIRBAG REPAIRS. THIS CAR HAS BEEN VERY WELL TAKEN CARE OF BUT STILL THE NOISES PERSIST AND NOW TO BE TOLD THAT THESE PARTS MIGHT NEED REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT? WE PAID A LOT OF GOOD MONEY FOR THIS VEHICLE (THIS IS A LIMITED EDITION HIGH SPORT VEHICLE) AND FEEL GM SHOULD BUY IT BACK AND REIMBURSE EVERY DIME OF IT DUE TO THE POOR QUALITY OF IT OR PROPERLY REPAIRED OR PARTS REPLACED AT GM EXPENSE WHILE PROVIDING AN EQUAL VALUE VEHICLE WHILE REPAIR WORK IS DONE. *TR

2001 Chevrolet Lumina recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2001 Chevrolet Lumina.
- Manufacturer: DELPHI
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:PRESSURE RELIEF DEVICES
- Summary: CERTAIN DELPHI FUEL PRESSURE REGULATORS, P/NOS. FP10020-11B1, FP10026-11B1, AND FP10027-11B1, SOLD AFTER JANUARY 9, 2007, AS AFTERMARKET EQUIPMENT FOR VARIOUS PASSENGER VEHICLES LISTED ABOVE. THE UNIVERSAL PRESSURE REGULATORS (UPR) WERE PRODUCED WITHOUT AN O'RING AND RETAINER.
- Consequence: FUEL MAY LEAK, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A FIRE.
- Remedy: DELPHI WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPLACE THE UPR FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 23, 2007. OWNERS CAN CONTACT DELPHI AT 877-411-8770.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
- Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER, SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES AND MINI VANS, SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE A PASSENGER AIR BAG THAT WAS MANUFACTURED WITHOUT A CHECK VALVE PIN. AN AIR BAG WITHOUT THE CHECK VALVE PIN COULD PRODUCE INCREASED PRESSURE AT THE ONSET OF THE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT AND REDUCED PRESSURE AFTERWARD.
- Consequence: THIS COULD INCREASE THE SEVERITY OF INJURY TO A PERSON WHO WAS NOT PROPERLY RESTRAINED AND WHO WAS CLOSE TO THE PASSENGER AIR BAG AT THE TIME OF DEPLOYMENT. IT COULD ALSO REDUCE THE AB8ILITY OF THE AIR BAG TO PROTECT A RESTRAINED FRONT SEAT PASSENGER.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE PASSENGER AIR BAG. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN DECEMBER 16, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-222-1020, PONTIAC AT 1-800-762-2737, OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-442-6537, OR SATURN AT 1-800-553-6000, PROMPT #3.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER, SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES AND MINIVANS. THE PASSENGER AIR BAG INFLATOR MODULES WERE BUILT WITHOUT THE CORRECT AMOUNT OF GENERANT, WHICH PRODUCES THE GAS THAT FILLS THE AIR BAG. SOME WERE BUILT WITH A DOUBLE LOAD OF GENERANT AND SOME WERE BUILT WITHOUT GENERANT.
- Consequence: IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH THAT WOULD TRIGGER A PASSENGER AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT, A DOUBLE LOAD OF GENERANT CAN CAUSE THE INFLATOR MODULE TO EXPLODE. IF THE AIR BAG MODULE EXPLODES, METAL AND PLASTIC DEBRIS COULD CAUSE SEVERE INJURY TO VEHICLE OCCUPANT. A MODULE WITH NO GENERANT WOULD NOT INFLATE THE AIR BAG, AND THE OCCUPANTS COULD RECEIVE MORE SEVERE INJURIES.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE PASSENGER AIR BAG MODULE. TELEPHONE CALLS WERE MADE TO OWNERS ON JANUARY 29, 2001. FOLLOW UP OWNER MAILING BEGAN ON APRIL 17, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-222-1020, PONTIAC AT 1-800-762-2737, OR SATURN AT 1-800-553-6000.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES, LIGHT DUTY TRUCKS, SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, AND MINI VANS EQUIPPED WITH TRW SEAT BELT BUCKLE ASSEMBLIES. THE BUCKLE BASE OF THESE SEAT BELT ASSEMBLIES WERE NOT PROPERLY HEAT TREATED AND THEREFORE DO NOT PASS THE LOAD BEARING REQUIREMENT OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 209, "SEAT BELT ASSEMBLIES."
- Consequence: IN THE EVENT OF A VEHICLE CRASH, THE OCCUPANT MAY NOT BE PROPERLY RESTRAINED.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE VEHICLE'S SAFETY BELT BUCKLE ASSEMBLY DATE CODES AND, IF NECESSARY, WILL REPLACE ANY SAFETY BELT BUCKLE ASSEMBLY.

Hello! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. It's great to hear that you and your family are enjoying your new car. It sounds like it has all the features you need to make your rides comfortable and convenient. With proper care, it should last you for many years to come. Thank you for choosing this car and we hope it continues to meet your expectations!
-
You've had the car for two years now and it's been great! You haven't had any repair costs except for the security system, which proved to be expensive but only because it was misdiagnosed. It's quick enough, responsive enough, has a solid feel, and is smooth and versatile.
-
Plenty of power, comfortable, and lots of trunk and internal cab space.
-
I've had the car for just over a year and it's been my favorite car yet! It's so fun to drive, has plenty of power, a smooth ride, lots of room, and gets really good gas mileage.
-
This car has been very reliable, with no major mechanical issues. We have had to replace the tires, brakes, and battery, which is to be expected. The highway mpg is impressive, averaging around 30 for a car of this size. While the mileage around town is not quite as good, it is still within acceptable limits. The car is comfortable and quiet on the road, making for a pleasant driving experience. The console drink holder is of poor quality and broke early on in our ownership, but this is a minor issue. To make the car more suitable for our hot Texas summers, we had the windows tinted darker, which has been a great improvement. We also installed a CD/radio unit for our own enjoyment. Although we were in a bit of a pressure situation when we purchased the car and overlooked a few things, such as the trunk release, we are still very happy with our purchase.

I've noticed that the transmission can be a bit jerky when accelerating, but once it gets going it can handle hills and higher speeds with ease. The heat takes a bit longer to warm up than some other cars I've driven, but it eventually gets there. While the gas mileage isn't the best, it's still a reliable car. Although it may look big and bulky on the outside, the interior can be a bit snug for taller people like myself. Despite its trade-in and private party value, I still find it to be a decent car overall.
