The Chevrolet Lumina is a mid-size car that was produced and marketed by the Chevrolet division of General Motors from 1989 until 2001.
Background
The first generation of the Lumina replaced the Chevrolet Celebrity and Chevrolet Monte Carlo under a single nameplate; the mechanically unrelated Chevrolet Lumina APV minivan served as the successor for the Celebrity station wagon. The model line was based on the front-wheel-drive GM10 platform (later designated the GM W platform), shared with Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac. For 1995, the second-generation Lumina was introduced, serving as a substantial exterior revision of the previous generation (the two-door coupe was renamed the Monte Carlo). For the 2000 model year, the Lumina was replaced by the Chevrolet Impala; the model line would retain the W platform through the 2016 model year.
Throughout its production, both generations of the Lumina were produced by General Motors Canada at Oshawa Car Assembly (Oshawa, Ontario). For markets outside of North America, the Chevrolet Lumina was derived from other large GM sedans. From 1998 to 2013, the Lumina was marketed in the Middle East and South Africa as a Chevrolet-badged version of the Holden Commodore produced in Australia. From 2005 to 2006, GM Philippines sold the Lumina as a Chevrolet-badged version of the Buick Regal (sharing much of its body with its American counterpart).

Most of the 1995's and up that I know of have well over 200,000 miles on and still very strong. I had 278,000 on mine when I sold it. It still ran perfect and everything still worked on the car. The only issue that I had was an intake gasket at 200,000.
Why did Chevy discontinue the Lumina?
In North America Chevrolet discontinued the Lumina in 2000 due to dwindling sales and the success of the reborn Impala. - Summary: WE BOUGHT THE CAR USED. AT TIME OF PURCHASE BRAKE LIGHTS APPEARED TO WORK. SAME EVENING, THE TWO REAR/SIDE BRAKE LIGHTS DID NOT WORK (THE THIRD/MIDDLE LIGHT WORKS). WE DID SOME TROUBLE SHOOTING, REPLACED BULBS, CHECKED FOR SHORTS. IN OUR RESEARCH WE FOUND THAT THIS IS IN FACT A COMMON PROBLEM AMONG GM SEDANS AND IS CAUSED BY FAILURE OF THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH IN THE STEERING COLUMN. THE SWITCH CONTACTS COMMONLY FAIL WHEN THE SWITCH BEGINS TO LOOSEN/DISINTIGRATE. THIS CAUSES A VARIETY OF ISSUES AMONG THE SYSTEMS THAT PASS THROUGH THAT SWITCH. BRAKE LIGHT FAILURE IS ONE SUCH ISSUE, AND OBVIOUSLY A SAFETY ISSUES. YES, I KNOW IT'S AN OLD CAR AND YES I EXPECT TO HAVE TO MAKE REPAIRS TO IT, BUT I DO NOT EXPECT OUR STUDENT DRIVER TO SUDDENLY BE WITHOUT BRAKE LIGHTS BECAUSE OF THE FAULTY MANUFACTURE OF THIS COMPONENT. A SMALL AMOUNT OF RESEARCH MAKES IT APPARENT THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON, VERY WIDESPREAD PROBLEM. IT'S EXPENSIVE TO FIX AND BEYOND MOST PEOPLE'S DIY ABILITIES, BESIDES WHICH I WOULD NOT BE COMFORTABLE WORKING WITH ANYTHING THAT AFFECTS THE AIRBAG SYSTEM. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO WAY GM HASN'T BEEN AWARE OF THIS ISSUE. I CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY THERE'S NO RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE.

Hello! I noticed that you have 190,000 miles on your 97 Lumina. That's amazing! It sounds like it has served you well and been very reliable during that whole time. I'm glad to hear that you've only had to replace a water pump and one alternator. Even though you have to rebuild the motor at 190,000 miles, I'm sure it will be as sturdy as ever and you can expect another 150,000 miles from this amazing car!

I recently purchased a torch red 1991 Chevy Lumina Z34 for $2000. Despite being 12 years old and having 134K miles on it, it still performs remarkably well. Its stylish good looks never fail to turn heads, making me feel like I got the better end of the deal. However, my main priority was reliability. Living in Minnesota where we experience below freezing weather for 3 months of the year, I needed a car that could get me to school, work, and back home safely. Thankfully, this car has proven to be just that!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with this car that I recently purchased. It's a great family-size sedan that's both reliable and comfortable. However, I did notice that the battery is located in a rather unusual spot deep inside the car. To replace it, you'll need some special wrenches and about an hour of work. It's a bit inconvenient, especially considering that there's plenty of space under the hood where the battery could be placed for easier access, like in most other cars. Overall, though, I'm really happy with my purchase!

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share a heartwarming story about my mother-in-law's car. Back in 1999, we picked out a 6 passenger car for her with only 15001 miles on it. She loved driving her bridge playing pals around in it. It's amazing that out of about 10 of them, she and the Lumina are the only ones still around. Although she doesn't drive anymore, we still keep the car around as the #4 vehicle in our 3 driver family. In fact, I'm planning to put on its first new set of tires and keep it for another 10 years. It's a true testament to the quality of the car and the memories it holds. Take care!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 1996 Lumina base sedan that I brought with me to Mexico City. Overall, it's been a great car! While it may feel a bit underpowered at times due to the altitude, the suspension is comfortable and handles bumpy roads with ease. The seats are decent, although the driver's seat could use a bit more lumbar support. Despite this, the car has been incredibly reliable and even made it through a long trip down here without any issues. Plus, it definitely stands out in a sea of European hatchbacks and sedans! Hi there! I'm excited to share my experience with my first car, a Lumina. At 17, I was thrilled to get behind the wheel of this car, even though it had 175,000 miles on it. I drive around 100 miles a day, mostly on the highway, and I've had to replace a few things like the struts, spark plugs, and plug wires. I even upgraded the radio! The car rides well and the seats are super comfortable. While the gas mileage could be better at around 25mpg, it's been a reliable car overall. I have noticed that it's a bit loud due to the mileage on the drivetrain, but that's to be expected. Unfortunately, I'm currently experiencing some issues with the drivability at 180,000 miles, and my trunk leaks a bit. However, other than that and some rough shifting, I haven't had any major problems. All in all, I would definitely recommend the Lumina as a great first car!

Considering the price (under 16G) when new, this one was a sleeper. It has a surprisingly tight and smooth ride, although that has deteriorated somewhat as the tires have worn. There have been some repairs, including a transmission pan leak, so it's worthwhile to keep current with various filter replacements. The engine is a willing worker, but not very refined. Contrary to Consumer Reports' review, the handling with Goodrich tires is sharp and precise for a car its size.

I bought my Lumina at an auto auction and I've been very pleased with it. Although I did have to replace the alternator, I still think it was a great deal. I paid less than $6k for a 4-year-old car with under 40k miles!
