The Chevrolet Lumina is a mid-size car that was produced and marketed by the Chevrolet division of General Motors from 1989 until 2001.
Background
The first generation of the Lumina replaced the Chevrolet Celebrity and Chevrolet Monte Carlo under a single nameplate; the mechanically unrelated Chevrolet Lumina APV minivan served as the successor for the Celebrity station wagon. The model line was based on the front-wheel-drive GM10 platform (later designated the GM W platform), shared with Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac. For 1995, the second-generation Lumina was introduced, serving as a substantial exterior revision of the previous generation (the two-door coupe was renamed the Monte Carlo). For the 2000 model year, the Lumina was replaced by the Chevrolet Impala; the model line would retain the W platform through the 2016 model year.
Throughout its production, both generations of the Lumina were produced by General Motors Canada at Oshawa Car Assembly (Oshawa, Ontario). For markets outside of North America, the Chevrolet Lumina was derived from other large GM sedans. From 1998 to 2013, the Lumina was marketed in the Middle East and South Africa as a Chevrolet-badged version of the Holden Commodore produced in Australia. From 2005 to 2006, GM Philippines sold the Lumina as a Chevrolet-badged version of the Buick Regal (sharing much of its body with its American counterpart).

Most of the 1995's and up that I know of have well over 200,000 miles on and still very strong. I had 278,000 on mine when I sold it. It still ran perfect and everything still worked on the car. The only issue that I had was an intake gasket at 200,000.
Why did Chevy discontinue the Lumina?
In North America Chevrolet discontinued the Lumina in 2000 due to dwindling sales and the success of the reborn Impala. MEDICAL ASSISTANCE WAS NEEDED. THE CONTACT HAD NOT TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 73,000.

- Summary: WE BOUGHT THE CAR USED. AT TIME OF PURCHASE BRAKE LIGHTS APPEARED TO WORK. SAME EVENING, THE TWO REAR/SIDE BRAKE LIGHTS DID NOT WORK (THE THIRD/MIDDLE LIGHT WORKS). WE DID SOME TROUBLE SHOOTING, REPLACED BULBS, CHECKED FOR SHORTS. IN OUR RESEARCH WE FOUND THAT THIS IS IN FACT A COMMON PROBLEM AMONG GM SEDANS AND IS CAUSED BY FAILURE OF THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH IN THE STEERING COLUMN. THE SWITCH CONTACTS COMMONLY FAIL WHEN THE SWITCH BEGINS TO LOOSEN/DISINTIGRATE. THIS CAUSES A VARIETY OF ISSUES AMONG THE SYSTEMS THAT PASS THROUGH THAT SWITCH. BRAKE LIGHT FAILURE IS ONE SUCH ISSUE, AND OBVIOUSLY A SAFETY ISSUES. YES, I KNOW IT'S AN OLD CAR AND YES I EXPECT TO HAVE TO MAKE REPAIRS TO IT, BUT I DO NOT EXPECT OUR STUDENT DRIVER TO SUDDENLY BE WITHOUT BRAKE LIGHTS BECAUSE OF THE FAULTY MANUFACTURE OF THIS COMPONENT. A SMALL AMOUNT OF RESEARCH MAKES IT APPARENT THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON, VERY WIDESPREAD PROBLEM. IT'S EXPENSIVE TO FIX AND BEYOND MOST PEOPLE'S DIY ABILITIES, BESIDES WHICH I WOULD NOT BE COMFORTABLE WORKING WITH ANYTHING THAT AFFECTS THE AIRBAG SYSTEM. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO WAY GM HASN'T BEEN AWARE OF THIS ISSUE. I CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY THERE'S NO RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE.

What a great story! You bought this car brand new in February 1996 and you still own it and drive it to this day, with an impressive 211,100 miles on the clock. It's amazing to hear that the only problems you've had with it have been minor, and even when you did have to get a rebuilt transmission installed last year, you still love this car and plan to keep it until it can no longer be fixed. You even purchased a Pontiac Bonneville in 2002 for interstate driving, but you still drive the Lumina from time to time to work. In fact, you drove it to work today, which is a 75 mile trip! It's clear that this car has been very reliable for you and was a great price. Thank you for sharing your story with us!

You purchased the car back in Feb 2002 with 25k miles and have been driving it ever since. It's now 2008 and the car has 90k miles on it. Overall, it has been a great value for the price. The only issues you've had were with the intake manifold gasket and a couple of check engine light problems, but those were easily fixed.

This mid-size car is a great option for trips, as it is both affordable and reliable. Despite a few minor repairs, such as replacing the oil crankcase sensor, it has proven to be a worthwhile investment. While the transmission did require a costly repair at 62,000 miles, this is not uncommon for a vehicle of this age and mileage. Although the engine can be noisy with some lifter tap, it is still a solid choice for those seeking a dependable car. Overall, I would recommend this car to others.

They're even good enough for the police! This is my second Lumina since '98, and I drive my cars hard. The first Lumina had 75,000 miles on it when it was wrecked, and this one has 91,000 and is still going strong. I haven't had any major maintenance problems with either one, just routine brake maintenance, oil changes, and so on. As a matter of fact, I only had the first tune-up done on this LTZ in June, and the car had 86,000 miles on it then!

I completely agree that the 1998 Lumina is an exceptional car! After driving it for 10 years, I have found it to be the most reliable, comfortable, and safe car I have ever owned. It has features that many 2008 cars still don't have, such as an electronically adjustable driver's seat, daytime running lights, automatic headlights, and a great engine that runs smoothly and quietly without any hesitation. This car has never left me stranded, and it seems to be indestructible. It has always been exceptionally reliable and has plenty of room. Most importantly, I have never experienced any engine or transmission problems in 10 years, even at 132,000 miles. I am confident that it could easily go up to 200,000 miles. I have owned a Corolla, Camry, Altima, and Buick, but the Lumina has been the best by far!

I bought this car with 30K miles 7 years ago and have put 70K miles on it since. It has been an absolute blast to drive, especially on curvy roads where it really shines. While the rearward visibility is not great, I have not experienced any electrical problems. Unfortunately, the transmission recently failed and the repair costs are estimated at $2700. In the past, I have had to spend around $1K to fix an oil seal, a leaky intake, and a bad computer chip, as well as several hundred dollars on hidden rust. Additionally, the timing belts need to be replaced every 50K miles and the alternator has gone out. While it does require about half a quart of oil per month, I have not experienced any leaks. Overall, this car has been one of the most fun vehicles I have ever driven. However, I would not purchase another one and I am now a bit hesitant about Chevy after 20 years of loyalty.

I bought my Lumina for $800 with 150k miles on it. My intention was just to drive it into the ground and buy a better car. However, I have yet to have the opportunity to junk this magical car. I've put about 35k miles on it and have not had to do any work on it, which has saved me thousands of dollars that I didn't have. Although it leaks oil, has terrible shocks that I won't replace, and looks bad, this car has been a lifesaver.

I inherited this car from my mom after I wrecked mine. Although the compressor and condenser went out after only two years of ownership, I have been fortunate enough to not have to do any major mechanical work on it despite the car having almost 140,000 miles on it. However, there have been some minor issues such as the fuel gauge, ash tray, air vents, cup holders, and passenger visor breaking. Additionally, the seats can become uncomfortable after extended periods of time. Before purchasing this car, I would suggest considering what features are most important to you.

We purchased this car brand new and it served us well for many years! The handling was excellent and the ABS worked great when we needed it. Although we did have some issues with the cloth seats wearing quickly and the beverage cup holder breaking often, the dealership was kind enough to sell them to us at cost. The back seat was a bit cramped for anyone over 8 years old and there was some wind noise, but overall it was a reliable car. Unfortunately, we did experience some problems with the brakes and transmission, but we were able to get them repaired. In the end, we decided to upgrade to a brand new 2005 Ford Focus. Thank you for considering our experience with this car!

Typical heavy domestic car ride not bad though. Roomy. Typical Chevy interior, rattles too much cheap plastic. Not solid but competent ride. Good engine (3.1 V6), good acceleration.
