Chevrolet Lumina problems

The Chevrolet Lumina is a mid-size car that was produced and marketed by the Chevrolet division of General Motors from 1989 until 2001.
Background
The first generation of the Lumina replaced the Chevrolet Celebrity and Chevrolet Monte Carlo under a single nameplate; the mechanically unrelated Chevrolet Lumina APV minivan served as the successor for the Celebrity station wagon. The model line was based on the front-wheel-drive GM10 platform (later designated the GM W platform), shared with Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac. For 1995, the second-generation Lumina was introduced, serving as a substantial exterior revision of the previous generation (the two-door coupe was renamed the Monte Carlo). For the 2000 model year, the Lumina was replaced by the Chevrolet Impala; the model line would retain the W platform through the 2016 model year.
Throughout its production, both generations of the Lumina were produced by General Motors Canada at Oshawa Car Assembly (Oshawa, Ontario). For markets outside of North America, the Chevrolet Lumina was derived from other large GM sedans. From 1998 to 2013, the Lumina was marketed in the Middle East and South Africa as a Chevrolet-badged version of the Holden Commodore produced in Australia. From 2005 to 2006, GM Philippines sold the Lumina as a Chevrolet-badged version of the Buick Regal (sharing much of its body with its American counterpart).

Common Chevrolet Lumina problems
The Chevrolet Lumina, produced from 1989 to 2001, is known for various issues that have affected its performance and reliability. Here are some common problems based on complaints from owners:
- Ignition Control Module: The ignition control module, also known as the coil backplane, can cause starting issues in the Lumina. This problem is often accompanied by a lack of power, idling issues, and the engine stalling. It is recommended to check the ignition control module, crank sensor, knock sensor, and the ECM fuse when facing such issues.
- Theft Lockout System: The theft lockout system in some Lumina models can cause starting issues. This system, designed to prevent theft, can sometimes malfunction and prevent the car from starting. A bypass sequence is available to help start the car in such cases.
- Engine Performance: Some Lumina owners have reported issues with engine performance, such as loss of power, idling problems, and the engine stalling. These issues can be caused by various factors, including faulty coil packs, spark plugs, and wiring.
- Intake Manifold Gaskets: The Lumina's intake manifold gaskets are known to leak, causing coolant loss and potential engine damage. This issue is particularly common in the 1997 model year, and replacing the gaskets is the recommended solution.
- Power Steering Unit: Some Lumina owners have reported issues with the power steering unit, which may require replacement.
- Window Motor: The window motor can fail, causing issues with the window operation.
- Visor Bracket: The visor bracket can fall out of the headliner, requiring repair or replacement.
- Plastic Head Gasket: GM used a plastic head gasket in some Lumina models, which can melt and cause engine damage. Replacing the plastic head gasket with a metal one is recommended to prevent this issue.
- Rust: Some Lumina models are prone to rust, particularly in the front wheel well area. This issue can lead to structural damage and require costly repairs.
These common problems with the Chevrolet Lumina are based on complaints from owners and can help potential buyers or current owners make informed decisions about maintaining and repairing their vehicles.
How long can a Chevy Lumina last?
Most of the 1995's and up that I know of have well over 200,000 miles on and still very strong. I had 278,000 on mine when I sold it. It still ran perfect and everything still worked on the car. The only issue that I had was an intake gasket at 200,000.
Why did Chevy discontinue the Lumina?
In North America Chevrolet discontinued the Lumina in 2000 due to dwindling sales and the success of the reborn Impala. The Lumina nameplate was still used in some markets, in parts of Asia it was applied to the mid-sized Buick Century/Regal and a badge engineered version of the Holden Commodore sports sedan.
What was the last year they made the Chevy Lumina?
2001
The Chevrolet Lumina is a mid-size car that was produced and marketed by the Chevrolet division of General Motors from 1989 until 2001.
What is the other name for the Chevy Lumina?
Since 1998, the Holden Commodore has been sold as the Chevrolet Lumina in the Middle East and South Africa, and previously in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. A coupe version based on the Holden Monaro was also sold in the Middle East as the Chevrolet Lumina Coupe.

- Summary: THIS PROBLEM EXISTS BWHEN THE VEHICLE IS SATIONARY AND IN TRANSIT. IT APPEARS TO BE INTERMITTEN AS WELL. MY BRAKE LIGHTS WORK WHEN I AM BRAKING, BUT THEY SEEM TO INTERMITTENLY BE FAILING WHEN I USE MY DIRECTIONAL SWITCH (4 WAY). I HAVE BEEN ADVISED ON 3 OCCASSIONS, TWICE BY SHERIFF'S DEPUTIES THAT MY BRAKE LIGHTS ARE NOT WORKING. BUT THEY DO WORK EXCEPT WHEN THE DIRECTIONALS ARE ON. AFTER SOME RESEARCH WE HAVE DISCOVERED THAT REPLACING THE 4 WAY SWITCH WILL RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. MAY I NOTE THAT I HAVE NEVER HAD THIS DEVICE FAIL IN ANY OF MY VEHICLES EVER. THAT REGARDLESS OF THE GES AND MAKES OF MY VEHICLCES THE MANUFACTURERS HAVE HAD THE GOOD SENSE TO MAKE CERTAIN THE 4 WAY SWITCH WAS RELIABLE. MIGHT I ADD LINKING BRAKING WITH THE SWITCH MIGHT BE CONSIDER IRRESPONSIBLE OF THE ENGINEERS. HAS THE 1998 CHEVY LUMINA 4WAY SWITCH BEEN RECALLED!?

FROM 11/9/2018 TO 11/13/2018 I WORKED OVERTIME PLUS MY REGULAR WEEK OF WORK. IT WAS THE FIRST TIME USING THE HEATER IN THIS VEHICLE AND I WAS WORKING LONG HOURS WITH THE HEATER ON BECAUSE THE WEATHER HAD CHANGED. ON 11/11/2018 AT ABOUT 0600, I STARTED HAVING A HEADACHE AND MY THROAT WAS IRRITATED BUT I WENT HOME AT 0800 AND CAME BACK TO WORK OVERTIME PLUS MY REGULAR SHIFT ON THE SAME DAY AT 2000. MY HEADACHE HAD INTENSIFIED AND I TOOK ALEVE FOR IT AND DRANK MILK FOR MY IRRITATED THROAT AND WEN HOME AT THE END OF MY SHIFT AT 0800 ON 11/13/2018. I WORKED THE REST OF THE WEEK BUT MY HEADACHES CONTINUED AND ON 11/19/2018, I ASKED THE MECHANIC TO SMELL THE CABIN OF MY VEHICLE AND AFTER SMELLING IT, HE TOLD ME TO PARK IT AND REPORT IT TO MY MANAGER BECAUSE IT HAD AN EXHAUST LEAK. ON 11/26/2018, I WENT TO THE HOSPITAL AND THE DOCTOR PLACED ME ON MODIFIED DUTY UNLESS I WAS NOT PROVIDED A DIFFERENT VEHICLE TO DRIVE AND THEN I WOULD CONSIDERED TEMPORARILY FULLY DISABLED UNTIL 12/14/2018. ON 11/28/2018, MY MANAGER TOLD ME I WAS GOING TO BE DRIVING THE DIRTY VEHICLE AFTER I HAD ASKED FOR ANOTHER VEHICLE. I HAD MY SUPERVISOR SMELL THE CABIN AND HE GAVE ME HIS TRUCK TO DRIVE AND I DROVE IT FOR 2 DAYS. ON 11/30/2018, MY SUPERVISOR TOLD ME THAT OUR MANAGER HAD CLEARED THE DIRTY VEHICLE AND I HAD TO GO BACK TO DRIVING IT BUT I WENT HOME FULLY DISABLED INSTEAD. ON 12/4/2018, I WAS FORCED BACK INTO WORK AND I DROVE MY MANAGERS TRUCK. ON 12/5/2018, I DROVE THE DIRTY VEHICLE TO THE FIRE STATION AND IT TESTED POSITIVE FOR AN EXHAUST LEAK WITH CARBON MONOXIDE IN THE CABIN. I HAD MY 2 DAYS OFF AND ON 11/8 AND 11/9/2018, I HAVE BEEN STAYING AT THE OFFICE BECAUSE THEY'RE FORCING ME TO DRIVE THE DIRTY VEHICLE AGAIN AND I CAN'T GO OUT TO WORK.

- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: WE BOUGHT THE CAR USED. AT TIME OF PURCHASE BRAKE LIGHTS APPEARED TO WORK. SAME EVENING, THE TWO REAR/SIDE BRAKE LIGHTS DID NOT WORK (THE THIRD/MIDDLE LIGHT WORKS). WE DID SOME TROUBLE SHOOTING, REPLACED BULBS, CHECKED FOR SHORTS. IN OUR RESEARCH WE FOUND THAT THIS IS IN FACT A COMMON PROBLEM AMONG GM SEDANS AND IS CAUSED BY FAILURE OF THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH IN THE STEERING COLUMN. THE SWITCH CONTACTS COMMONLY FAIL WHEN THE SWITCH BEGINS TO LOOSEN/DISINTIGRATE. THIS CAUSES A VARIETY OF ISSUES AMONG THE SYSTEMS THAT PASS THROUGH THAT SWITCH. BRAKE LIGHT FAILURE IS ONE SUCH ISSUE, AND OBVIOUSLY A SAFETY ISSUES. YES, I KNOW IT'S AN OLD CAR AND YES I EXPECT TO HAVE TO MAKE REPAIRS TO IT, BUT I DO NOT EXPECT OUR STUDENT DRIVER TO SUDDENLY BE WITHOUT BRAKE LIGHTS BECAUSE OF THE FAULTY MANUFACTURE OF THIS COMPONENT. A SMALL AMOUNT OF RESEARCH MAKES IT APPARENT THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON, VERY WIDESPREAD PROBLEM. IT'S EXPENSIVE TO FIX AND BEYOND MOST PEOPLE'S DIY ABILITIES, BESIDES WHICH I WOULD NOT BE COMFORTABLE WORKING WITH ANYTHING THAT AFFECTS THE AIRBAG SYSTEM. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO WAY GM HASN'T BEEN AWARE OF THIS ISSUE. I CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY THERE'S NO RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I purchased it a year ago and have driven it for 10,000 miles without any issues. It's been incredibly reliable, quiet, and comfortable, and I've been very pleased with its performance overall.

Congratulations on your amazing purchase! I'm glad to hear that your car has been driving down the road perfectly with very smooth riding, gear changing and steady braking and acceleration. Although the AC/cool air may not be working, it's great to know that it shouldn't be too much of a problem since it's soon to be winter. While the interior may not be the best you've seen, it's definitely not bad at all for what it is. I also love the exterior design! The overall build quality seems to be pretty solid, with just a few minor things like seatbelt buckles that can be a bit difficult at times, but still usable. Overall, I highly recommend this very good car!

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2nd Lumina, which I purchased as a 1-year-old car from Avis Auto Rental. I have a 46-mile commute every day, with about 1/3 of it in the city and the other 2/3 on the freeway. I am so happy to report that I am averaging an incredible 28 MPG! I have had no problems with either vehicle that required dealer service, except for a front brake job at 60K miles on my 2nd car. What's more, I still have the original tires with legal tread on my 1999 Lumina, which now has 73k miles on it! The front-wheel-drive system is fantastic, especially during the winter when I have to drive on snowy roads. I have even taken this car on many mountain dirt roads with no power or traction problems. I think Chevy deserves a GOLD STAR for designing such a well-made, basic sedan.

Hi there! I noticed that you have a 1991 Chevy Lumina Euro with 136,000 miles on it. It's great to see that you're taking care of it and repairing anything it needs. It sounds like you have a lot of history with this car, having bought it new in 1991 when you were 42 years old and now being retired at 62. It's wonderful that you plan to keep it for the long haul. I hope it continues to serve you well!

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that I have a great used car for sale. It's been with me for 7 years and has driven 100,000 miles, but it's still in great condition. Let me know if you're interested!
Ed Schmeler 2025-02-21
Vehicle year: 1995
The Lumina may have had some issues, such as old brakes, a faulty alternator, and a chronic coolant leakage problem, but considering its age and mileage, it is still a reliable and spacious car. The smooth ride and good snow traction make it a great choice for anyone looking for a cheap used car. It's worth noting that the white ones tend to flake paint after a while, but this is not a problem with other colors. Overall, I highly recommend the Lumina as a great option for those in the market for a used car.

Although my experience with the 97 Lumina was not ideal, I believe that foreign vehicles may be a better investment. In my opinion, GM could benefit from prioritizing quality over quantity. During my ownership, I had to replace a head gasket, two ball joints, a wiper engine, and the service engine light remained on due to fuel issues. However, I did appreciate that GM switched to a better paint for the 97 Lumina, which was an improvement from previous models.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with this amazing car that I bought back in the spring of '94 with only 12k miles on it. I've put over 167k miles on it since then and it has taken every bit of abuse I gave it. The body held up for as long as it could, even living in the 'rust belt', and the interior is still fresh and firm. Other than the notorious GM brake problem, this car has been solid. The radiator went at 140k (rust related), the battery went at 150k, and the struts at 90k. Unfortunately, the rear suspension is now officially shot and the bushings are gone (150k), but it still runs like a top! Thanks for listening to my story.

I bought my lumina in October 2008 and unfortunately, I have already had an oil and radiator leak. The gas mileage is not great, and it's a bit loud with not much power. It seems like every time I go and get my oil changed they tell me another thing wrong with it. The interior has seen better days and on a rainy day, it fogs up quite a bit, even with defrost on. However, I'm hopeful that with some maintenance and care, I can improve my experience with the car.

I really like my car overall. It always starts and runs well, and it's very roomy. It handles pretty well too. The only thing I would have liked is a little more power from the engine. When it's cold outside, the engine tends to make a tapping noise. Additionally, the engine has started using about 1 quart of oil in-between 3500 mile oil changes this year. Despite these issues, the car has only 75000 miles on it, as I bought it a year old with 10000 miles in 1997. The interior of the car is wearing out faster than the rest of the car, and the cup holder in the armrest broke about a year ago. Unfortunately, the driver seat mounting bracket just broke this month.
