2007 Bmw M6 problems
The BMW M6 is a high-performance version of the 6 Series marketed under the BMW M sub-brand from 1983 to 2018 (with a break from 1990 to 2004).
Introduced in the coupe body style, the M6 was also built in convertible and fastback sedan ('Gran Coupe') body styles for later generations. An M6 model was built for each of the first three generations of the 6 Series. Production of the M6 ended in 2018 and it was replaced by the BMW M8 (F91/F92/F93) in 2019.
E24 M635CSi/M6 (1983–1989)
The M6 lineage began in 1983 with the M635CSi model of the E24 6 Series range, which was powered by the M88/3 DOHC straight-six engine (which was a modified version of the engine used in the BMW M1 supercar). In most countries, the model was badged the M635CSi, however the equivalent model in North America and Japan was simply badged in "M6".
The European-specification M635CSi used the M88/3 engine (without a catalytic converter), which generated 210 kW (286 PS; 282 hp) at 6,500 rpm and 340 N⋅m (251 lb⋅ft) at 4,500 rpm. The M6 version, sold in North America and Japan, used the S38B35 engine (with catalytic converter), which generated 256 hp (191 kW; 260 PS) and 330 N⋅m (243 lb⋅ft) at the same engine speeds. The catalyzed engine was also used in European and other market cars beginning in the summer of 1987, with identical specifications to the federalized engine. The sole transmission for all models was a 5-speed Getrag 280 manual transmission.
Other changes included BBS RS wheels, a rear lip spoiler, a larger front air dam, larger front brakes and revised suspension with a 10 mm (0.4 in) lower ride height.
The E24 series became a "world car" for the 1988 and 1989 model years, sporting the same bumpers and aerodynamic treatments as its high-performance counterparts across all markets.
According to BMW, the car can accelerate from 0–97 km/h (0–60 mph) in 5.8 and 6.8 seconds for the European and North American versions respectively. The curb weights of the 1987 models are 1,515 kg (3,340 lb) for the M635 CSi and 1,619 kg (3,569 lb) for the M6. A top speed of 255 km/h (158 mph) made the European M635CSi the second fastest BMW automobile ever built next to the M1. The quarter mile time for the M635 CSi has been recorded at 14.5 seconds while 161 km/h (100 mph) is achieved in 15 seconds.
A total of 5,855 cars were produced. Of these, 1,677 cars were imported to North America. Due to the elongated front and rear bumpers, the length of the U.S. models is 4,923 mm (193.8 in).
Production of the E24 M635CSi/M6 ended in 1989.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-04-13
- VIN: WBSEH93567B
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: STEERING WHEEL LOCK SYSTEM FAILURE WARNING. SYSTEM WARNS THAT THE ELECTRONIC STEERING WHEEL LOCK HAS FAILED, AND CAN NEITHER LOCK OR UNLOCK. IT ALSO WARNED THAT THE CAR MAY NOT START, BUT THE WARNING HAPPENED AFTER THE CAR WAS RUNNING. THERE WAS A CLICKING COMING FROM THE WHEEL AS I DROVE, BUT THE WHEEL NEVER LOCKED WHILE I WAS DRIVING. I DROVE WITH THE WARNING ON BECAUSE: 1) THE WHEEL WAS NOT LOCKED, AND THE VEHICLE WAS ALREADY RUNNING; 2) I WAS VERY FAR FROM HOME, AT NIGHT, IN AN UNFRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD. WHEN I GOT HOME I LOOKED UP THE ISSUE, AND FOUND THAT IT IS AN EXTREMELY COMMON FAILURE ON BMW VEHICLES.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-12-26
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: AFTER TAKING MY CAR TO A BODY SHOP FOR SOME WORK TO BED DONE (NEW CARBON FIBER HOOD INSTALLED AND CARBON FIBER REAR DEFUSER), THE CAR SAT AT THE SHOP FOR 2 WEEKS BEFORE ANY WORK BEGAN. WHILE SITTING THERE, THE BATTERY DIED. WHEN THE SHOP CHARGED IT, THE RED ELECTRIC STEERING LOCK FAULT CAME IN THE DASH AND IT WILL NOT START. I DID SOME ONLINE RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH MOST BMW 2007 MODELS. SOME CONSUMERS HAVE TAKEN THEIR CARS TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR THE REPAIR AND THE DEALERSHIP WOULD TELL THEM THEY NEED TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN FOR THE CORRECT REPAIR. OTHERS HAVE FOUND THAT THE COMPUTER CAUSES THIS WHEN THE BATTERY IS DRAINED AND THEY ONLY NEED TO CLEAR THE FAULT USING A OBD CABLE AND SOFTWARE. SOME OTHER CONSUMERS HAVE HAD TO BYPASS THE ELECTRIC STEERING LOCK (OR ELV) AND INSTALL AN EMULATOR TO KEEP THE COMPUTER FROM READING THE FAULT. THIS HAS BEEN AN EXTREMELY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS YEAR'S MODELS. BMW NEEDS TO RECALL THIS ISSUE AND REPAIR THE PROBLEM. AS OF NOW, I HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE MY CAR TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP, 45 MINUTES AWAY, AND THEN PAY TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM. BEING A BMW, THIS WILL CERTAINLY BE AN EXPENSIVE REPAIR THAT I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO PAY FOR, JUST BECAUSE THE BATTERY DIED. PLEASE DO THE RIGHT THING, BMW, AND RECALL THIS ISSUE. HOW MANY COMPLAINTS ARE NEEDED BEFORE YOU TAKE RESPONSIBILITY?
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-12-16
- VIN: WBSEH935X7B
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: JUST A FEW SHORT MONTHS AFTER BEING PAID-OFF AND THE WARRANTY EXPIRING DUE TO "TIME" OUR PRISTINE M6 WITH JUST OVER 22,000 MILES REQUIRED THE REPLACEMENT OF BOTH THROTTLE BODY ACTUATORS. WE WERE INFORMED OF THIS "NEED" WHILE THE CAR WAS IN FPR A "STEERING" POSITION SENSOR REPAIR. WE HAD NOTICED ZERO PERFORMANCE DEFICIENCY PRIOR TO THIS $7000.00 REPAIR BUT WERE TOLD BY THE SERVICE MANAGER SOUTHBAY BMW OF TORRANCE CA THAT THIS WAS "ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY FOR DRIVER SAFETY" AND OF COURSE NOT COVERED BY ANY RECALL. AFTER THE REPAIR THERE WAS A NOTICEABLE "DECLINE" IN PERFORMANCE AND THROTTLE RESPONSE WHICH I COMPLAINED ABOUT AND THE SERVICE MANAGER STATED "THIS IS DUE TO THE COMPUTERS "RE-LEARNING" OUR DRIVING HABITS. MY RECOMMENDATION IS NEVER EVER BUY A BMW PRODUCT. WE HAVE A DINAN M3 AND THIS M6, HAD THOUGHT ABOUT THE I8 BUT THIS EXPERIENCE CLEARLY INDICATES TO ME THAT COMPONENTS HAVE BEEN "TIME-LIFE" ENGINEERED. BUYER BEWARE.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-11-11
- VIN: WBSEK93597C
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: CAR HAS 50K MILES, AND SUFFERED PREMATURE AIRBAG SEAT MAT SENSOR FAILURE (SAME DESIGN & MANUFACTURER AS OTHER BMW'S WHICH WERE SUBJECT TO RECALL OF 200K UNITS OVER THIS SENSOR). AIRBAG AND SRS FAULT LIGHTS ARE ON, AND AIRBAG IS INOPERATIVE. BMW DECLINED TO COVER REPLACEMENT, STATING THE RECALL DOESN'T COVER THIS VEHICLE. HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE USES THE SAME DEFECTIVE SENSOR AS THE RECALLED MODELS, WHICH PREMATURELY FAILED IN THE SAME MANNER, AND LARGE NUMBERS OF COMPLAINTS AT CAR MEETS AND ON INTERNET FORUMS INDICATE THE 6 SERIES SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED IN THE RECALL, AND SUFFER THE SAME SENSOR FAILURES, RESULTING IN NONFUNCTIONAL PASSENGER AIRBAGS.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-04-01
- VIN: WBSEK93587C
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: ELECTRIC STEERING LOCK INDICATOR LIGHT APPEARS AND STATES THAT IF ENGINE TURNED OFF IT MAY NOT RESTART. SO FAR IT HAS ALWAYS RESTARTED. THE DEALER INDICATED THAT IT MAY BE DUE TO NEEDING A BATTERY REPLACEMENT, WHICH COULD CAUSE MIXED SIGNALS BEING SENT TO COMPUTER. WE REPLACED THE BATTERY, AND THE LIGHT DIDN'T TURN ON FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS, BUT NOW IT IS COMING ON AGAIN. THE CAR HAS ONLY. *TR
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-02-16
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Number Of Deaths: 1
- Crash: 1
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: I HAVE DECIDED TO CONTACT YOU AFTER READING THE ARTICLE ON BMW RECALLING VEHICLES WITH DEFECTS. THE REASON IS THAT ITS BEEN 3 YEARS THAT WE ARE TRYING TO GET ANY REPLY ( IN VAIN) FROM BMW GROUP AND BMW REPRESENTATIVE OFFICE HERE IN GEORGIA/TBILISI RE: THE BMW CAR THAT WE HAVE PURCHASED BACK IN 2007 MODEL 650 CI. IT WAS ADVERTISED AS ONE OF THE MOST SAFEST CARS WORLDWIDE. IN FEBRUARY 2007 WE HAD AN ACCIDENT WHERE THE DRIVER WAS SEVERELY INJURED AND THE PASSENGER PASSED AWAY IMMEDIATELY. AS LATER THE POLICE REPORT AS WELL AS INDEPENDENT EXPERTS REPORT STATED, THE FATAL ACCIDENT COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED IF AIRBAGS OPENED (PLEASE SEE ATTACHED PHOTOS OF THE ACCIDENT AND OF THE PERSON THAT PASSED AWAY). AS SHOWN BY THE EXPERTISE, THE VEHICLE HAD A FACTORY DEFECT, DUE TO WHICH THE AIRBAGS DID NOT FUNCTION WHEN THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED. WE HAVE LEARNED LATER THAT THIS WAS NOT THE SINGLE CASE, WHEN THE AIRBAGS OF THIS PARTICULAR CARS DID NOT OPEN DURING THE ACCIDENTS. OUR LAWYERS HAVE ADDRESSED BMW REPRESENTATIVE OFFICE HERE IN GEORGIA AS WELL AS BMW GROUP FOR FURTHER INVESTIGATIONS, BUT BMW HAS SIMPLY IGNORED US. THEY DO NOT REPLY TO OUR QUERIES AND IGNORE OUR CALLS. WE HAVE BEEN DESPERATE IN THE PAST FEW YEARS SEARCHING FOR JUSTICE, THE COMPANY SILENTLY DENIES ITS FAULT, WHICH CASED THE DEATH OF A PERSON - A FATHER OF 2 LITTLE GIRLS OF 2 AND 4 YEARS OLD.... I DO HOPE THAT YOU WILL TRANSFER THIS INFORMATION TO THE RELEVANT AUTHORITIES OR INFORM THE LARGER PUBLIC, SO THAT PEOPLE ARE AWARE OF THE "LUXURY DANGEROUS FOR LIFE BMW M650 CI MODEL CARS". *TR
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-03-03
- VIN: WBSEK93507C
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: THIS IS A 2007 BMW M6 CONVERTIBLE. THE DOOR WINDOWS DROP 1/2" WHEN THE DOORS ARE OPENED AND THEY RAISE UP 1/2" WHEN THE DOORS ARE CLOSED IN ORDER TO KEEP NOISE DOWN. I LIVE IN NEW YORK. WHEN THE CAR IS DAMP OR WET FROM RAIN OR SNOW AND THE TEMPERATURE DROPS BELOW FREEZING, THE WINDOWS DO NOT DROP WHEN THE DOOR IS OPENED. HENCE, WHEN YOU GO TO CLOSE THE DOOR, THE WINDOW HITS THE ROOF AND DOESN'T ALLOW THE DOOR TO FULLY CLOSE. THE PARTIALLY CLOSED DOOR IS VERY DANGEROUS. ONLY WHEN YOU WARM UP THE CAR & THEN DEFROST THE SIDE WINDOWS DOES THE WINDOW DROP TO ALLOW THE DOOR TO FULLY CLOSE & LOCK. THIS IS DEEMED AN ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEM BY BMW NA IN NEW JERSEY. THIS IS THE SECOND BMW 6 SERIES I HAVE OWNED AND BOTH HAVE SAME PROBLEM. *TR

I have owned several BMWs, but the M6 is truly amazing. It is impossible to drive it without a smile on your face! The car has great power, more than I could ever use, but it is still fun to push it to the limit. Despite this, it feels very solid and reliable. I was considering a Porsche Turbo, but the M6 is much less jumpy and more comfortable. Additionally, I appreciate the extra room. If you are a BMW enthusiast, you will absolutely adore this car!
-
This car is truly awesome! It has great stability in turns at high speed and comes with a nice base package that includes most of the toys you could want. Plus, it's a fun car to drive with the top up or down.
-
This car is incredibly fun to drive and the handling is second to none.

Amazing in every way!
-
This car is truly an amazing engineering feat! It's meant to be driven hard, not tamely, and the entire vehicle responds incredibly well when pushed to its limits. And let's not forget, it's the ultimate eye-catcher, so get ready to turn heads! So go ahead and enjoy!

My M6 had a tendency to consume oil at a very early stage, at just 1,800 kilometres, and used an average of 1 litre of oil per 1,000 kilometres until BMW agreed to replace the engine. Unfortunately, I also experienced a faulty tyre pressure indicator which, combined with the need to top up the oil every 1,000 kilometres, made BMW's fastest convertible slower on trips than my daughter's Smart ForTwo. Additionally, I found it difficult to source parts and tyres for the car in Australia. Overall, my experience with the car was not ideal, but I hope that BMW can improve on these issues in the future.
