1994 Chevrolet Lumina problems
The Chevrolet Lumina is a mid-size car that was produced and marketed by the Chevrolet division of General Motors from 1989 until 2001.
Background
The first generation of the Lumina replaced the Chevrolet Celebrity and Chevrolet Monte Carlo under a single nameplate; the mechanically unrelated Chevrolet Lumina APV minivan served as the successor for the Celebrity station wagon. The model line was based on the front-wheel-drive GM10 platform (later designated the GM W platform), shared with Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac. For 1995, the second-generation Lumina was introduced, serving as a substantial exterior revision of the previous generation (the two-door coupe was renamed the Monte Carlo). For the 2000 model year, the Lumina was replaced by the Chevrolet Impala; the model line would retain the W platform through the 2016 model year.
Throughout its production, both generations of the Lumina were produced by General Motors Canada at Oshawa Car Assembly (Oshawa, Ontario). For markets outside of North America, the Chevrolet Lumina was derived from other large GM sedans. From 1998 to 2013, the Lumina was marketed in the Middle East and South Africa as a Chevrolet-badged version of the Holden Commodore produced in Australia. From 2005 to 2006, GM Philippines sold the Lumina as a Chevrolet-badged version of the Buick Regal (sharing much of its body with its American counterpart).

Is a Chevy Lumina a good car?
With a competent car and a pricing structure that undercuts Ford and Chrysler, Chevy's Lumina offers a fine blend of function, value and performance. This is one GM product that was done right the first time, just like the new Malibu, which should be investigated closely by buyers interested in the Lumina.
How long can a Chevy Lumina last?
Most of the 1995's and up that I know of have well over 200,000 miles on and still very strong. I had 278,000 on mine when I sold it. It still ran perfect and everything still worked on the car. The only issue that I had was an intake gasket at 200,000.
Why did Chevy discontinue the Lumina?
In North America Chevrolet discontinued the Lumina in 2000 due to dwindling sales and the success of the reborn Impala. The Lumina nameplate was still used in some markets, in parts of Asia it was applied to the mid-sized Buick Century/Regal and a badge engineered version of the Holden Commodore sports sedan.

I traded in an '89 S10 Baja for this car and I have to say it was an excellent trade. This is a truly memorable car and if you ever get the chance to purchase another, you should do it. I never had any repairs except a power steering pump which was only 40 bucks. I bought the car shortly after I graduated high school, and I kept it for over 2 years. Then I traded it to a '97 Grand Cherokee limited, but I missed it so much I had to purchase the car back from the dealer. I truly enjoyed this car. It has plenty of horsepower. I highly suggest that if you see one of these for sale, you should buy it. You will not be disappointed.

I'm so glad to hear that you've had this car since new in late '92 and that it has served you so well! With 143K on it now, it sounds like you're taking great care of it and plan on making it another 143K. It's impressive that you can exceed 30 mpg on the highway, and it's great to hear that you've had very few problems. I agree, it's a shame they don't make them anymore. The 3.1L engine sounds like it still has plenty of spunk!

I had my Lumina Euro for 4 years and put 75K miles on it without having to spend much on maintenance. The gas mileage was an impressive 30 mpg and the ride was smooth and dependable. Although the instrument panel for the A/C and radio was far away, I felt very comfortable and safe driving it. While I found the parts to be expensive and the brakes needed to be replaced every year, I would still recommend this car for a first car. It was a great experience and I loved it!

We purchased this car brand new back in '94 and it has been a fantastic vehicle. However, we recently decided to upgrade to a two-door model. Throughout its life, we put 98,000 miles on it and only had to make minor repairs. We did have to replace the water pump, which is a common issue with GM cars, but overall it was a great ride with excellent handling and good gas mileage. Our car was a beautiful torch red and held up incredibly well with no signs of rust. The 3.1 liter engine was fantastic, but we would caution against purchasing a GM 3.4 liter engine as it did not perform well in this car.

I've had my Lumina for about 5 years now and I'm really going to miss it. I bought it with 85,000 miles on it and unfortunately, I'll have to part with it at around 170,000 miles due to a problem with the transmission. It's been a great car with good gas mileage and minimal maintenance.

I got this car a year ago and it hasn't failed me since. The paint job is in excellent condition, the ride is smooth and comfortable, and the acceleration and overall drive are great. Although the brakes are a little weak, everything else checks out great. This was my first car and I love it.
Hershel Greenholt 2024-06-25
Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with the car I bought back in 07/02. It's a really spacious car and I get about 23 mpg, which is great. However, I did notice that the air conditioner and heat aren't very powerful. Also, the brakes could be a bit better and it takes a bit longer to stop the car. But overall, I think it's a pretty good car considering that it's used. Thanks for listening!
Kendrick Wilkinson 2024-04-05
Over the course of 5 years, we drove our car for 225,000 miles and only experienced one major issue - the transmission required an overhaul at 201,000 miles. Unfortunately, the rebuild wasn't as good as the original. If you decide to purchase this car, it's important to note that you may need to replace the alternator every 75,000 miles, the water pump every 100,000 miles, and the heater core every 125,000 miles. The engine has only required valve cover gaskets. As the car approaches 300,000 miles, we plan to replace it due to the body not being as rigid as it once was.
Willis Baumbach 2024-03-09
Typical heavy domestic car ride not bad though. Roomy. Typical Chevy interior, rattles too much cheap plastic. Not solid but competent ride. Good engine (3.1 V6), good acceleration.
Rylan Tillman 2024-01-07
When I bought mine it only had 15k miles. I love the ride , styling and interior comfort and quality. The doors weigh a ton so don't get anything caught when closing them. We had it about a year and enjoyed several trips and I swear that it seemed like the faster I went the better it hugged the road. Now for the bad things....don't get in a situtation where you need to make a 3 point turn like ordinary cars because it will take 5 points. Be VERY careful when accelerating hard at slow speeds because you will get into problems as it has alot of torque steer and it's easy to over compensate. The car was bone stock and around the 20k mile mark the alternator went out. Fortunately I had a friend at a Chevy dealer who took it in and replaced the alt even tho it was out of warranty. Six months later it went out again. Lucky me that Chevy had a warranty policy that said if any part failed within a year that they installed it would be covered. Well it happened 2 more times and each time it was covered. The alternator sits down behind the engine in front of the passenger feet so it doesn't get enough air. The engine has to be dropped out the bottom for access.....what a job!! I talked Chevy into getting a special aftermarket alternator with built in better cooling capabilities. That one went out too. I remembered Pontiac had gas boiling problems on one of their TransAms and made a blower kit to blow air on the carb. Believe it our not a dealer here had one of the last ones in the U.S. so I got it and installed it. I mounted the fan and ran a snorkel to blow on the alternator. I'll be danged if that one failed too. Back to Chevy for the last time then I sold it. Each time the electrical system was checked with no problems. If I had bought it new I would have had a good Lemon Law case. I have never heard if anyone else had this same problem....probably not. I miss my Z but not the frustration.
