1996 Chevrolet Lumina problems
The Chevrolet Lumina is a mid-size car that was produced and marketed by the Chevrolet division of General Motors from 1989 until 2001.
Background
The first generation of the Lumina replaced the Chevrolet Celebrity and Chevrolet Monte Carlo under a single nameplate; the mechanically unrelated Chevrolet Lumina APV minivan served as the successor for the Celebrity station wagon. The model line was based on the front-wheel-drive GM10 platform (later designated the GM W platform), shared with Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac. For 1995, the second-generation Lumina was introduced, serving as a substantial exterior revision of the previous generation (the two-door coupe was renamed the Monte Carlo). For the 2000 model year, the Lumina was replaced by the Chevrolet Impala; the model line would retain the W platform through the 2016 model year.
Throughout its production, both generations of the Lumina were produced by General Motors Canada at Oshawa Car Assembly (Oshawa, Ontario). For markets outside of North America, the Chevrolet Lumina was derived from other large GM sedans. From 1998 to 2013, the Lumina was marketed in the Middle East and South Africa as a Chevrolet-badged version of the Holden Commodore produced in Australia. From 2005 to 2006, GM Philippines sold the Lumina as a Chevrolet-badged version of the Buick Regal (sharing much of its body with its American counterpart).

Common 1996 Chevrolet Lumina problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the Chevrolet Lumina 1996, here are some common problems associated with this car:
- Failed Fuel Pump Can Cause Engine to Stall:
Another common problem reported by owners is a failed fuel pump that can cause the engine to stall. A malfunctioning fuel pump can result in poor engine performance, stalling, and difficulty starting the car. This issue can be disruptive to the vehicle's operation and requires prompt attention.
- Starting Issues and Rough Idling:
Some owners have experienced difficulties starting the car when hot, along with rough idling. This problem can be frustrating and may indicate issues with components like the crankshaft position sensor, intake manifold gasket, or other engine-related issues. It is essential to address these starting and idling problems to ensure the car runs smoothly.

Is a Chevy Lumina a good car?
With a competent car and a pricing structure that undercuts Ford and Chrysler, Chevy's Lumina offers a fine blend of function, value and performance. This is one GM product that was done right the first time, just like the new Malibu, which should be investigated closely by buyers interested in the Lumina.
How long can a Chevy Lumina last?
Most of the 1995's and up that I know of have well over 200,000 miles on and still very strong. I had 278,000 on mine when I sold it. It still ran perfect and everything still worked on the car. The only issue that I had was an intake gasket at 200,000.
Why did Chevy discontinue the Lumina?
In North America Chevrolet discontinued the Lumina in 2000 due to dwindling sales and the success of the reborn Impala. The Lumina nameplate was still used in some markets, in parts of Asia it was applied to the mid-sized Buick Century/Regal and a badge engineered version of the Holden Commodore sports sedan.

This Lumina, which I purchased new, has been an amazing purchase! The car has been incredibly reliable and the 6 cylinder engine and transmission work seamlessly together. The power performance for the weight of the car is excellent! The radio is top notch and I absolutely love the speed/noise sensitive automatic volume control. The AC unit is also fantastic - it gets really cold! Overall, I must say that this is the best car I have ever owned, and it was not a bad price at all!
-
I love the design of this car! The clean lines are so sleek and modern. Plus, there's plenty of room on the inside (even for someone as tall as me at 6'2
-
Hi there! I loved my Lumina so much! It was my first car and it lasted for an amazing 308,000 miles before it finally died. I didn't have to do much maintenance on it, just the usual oil changes and such. Unfortunately, I had to let it go because it needed a costly head gasket repair that would have exceeded the car's value. But I'll always cherish the memories I had with it!
-
Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share that I bought this car not too long ago and it's been great! Now my mom is getting a Lumina too.
-
I had to replace everything under the hood because the last owner didn't take good care of it. But I fixed it, and now it performs great, getting 26 miles per gallon!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 1996 Lumina base sedan that I brought with me to Mexico City. Overall, it's been a great car! While it may feel a bit underpowered at times due to the altitude, the suspension is comfortable and handles bumpy roads with ease. The seats are decent, although the driver's seat could use a bit more lumbar support. Despite this, the car has been incredibly reliable and even made it through a long trip down here without any issues. Plus, it definitely stands out in a sea of European hatchbacks and sedans! Thanks for listening to my story.

I bought my Lumina at an auto auction and I've been very pleased with it. Although I did have to replace the alternator, I still think it was a great deal. I paid less than $6k for a 4-year-old car with under 40k miles!
Russell Turcotte 2024-06-10
I've owned this car for 120,000 miles and have only had to replace a $70.00 transmission sensor, aside from regular maintenance. The car now has 152,000 miles and is still running smoothly. It's amazing how affordable these cars are!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to let you know that I have a midsize sedan that's in great condition and ready to hit the road! It's been well taken care of by its original owner and has low mileage for its age (133,700). Plus, it has good tires and cold A/C to keep you comfortable on your drives. The exterior and interior are both a sleek graphite color, and it even comes with matching original alloy wheels. Let me know if you're interested!

Routine maintenance was fine - nothing major, just brakes, oil changes, and normal service. The car was highway driven and not punished. However, at 85,000 miles, it needed a new head gasket, and at 110,000 miles, it blew two connecting rods at 60 MPH. There was no warning on either occasion - just failure. Although I liked the car, I will never buy another one. In contrast, my 1990 Toyota Camry just went past 225,000 miles, and all it ever requires is routine maintenance, oil changes, an occasional set of brakes, and one clutch replacement at 155,000 miles.
