The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.

The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."

The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.

As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.

The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

Common 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander phev problems

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV 2022 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. One major issue is the lack of a battery heater, which has caused problems for those living in colder climates. The older model Outlanders had a dedicated battery heater, but the new generation of vehicles, including the 2022 model, does not include this feature. This has led to issues with charging and starting the vehicle in extreme cold temperatures, making it unsuitable for those living in areas with harsh winters.

Another issue reported by owners is the hood problem, where the hood of the vehicle begins lifting and flexing with the wind, causing concern that it might snap off. This issue has been reported by owners in Northern Arizona, where windy conditions are common. The dealerships have not yet issued a recall for this issue, leaving owners concerned about driving the vehicle in windy conditions.

The vehicle has also been reported to have issues with the battery, with some owners experiencing problems starting the vehicle after only three months of ownership. The battery issue has caused the vehicle to not start, and in some cases, it has taken several hours for the tow truck to arrive, leaving owners stranded. The dealerships have not offered any rental or loaner vehicles, leaving owners to deal with the inconvenience of a non-functioning vehicle.

The Outlander PHEV has also been reported to have issues with the fuel pump remote, which can cause problems when trying to refuel the vehicle. The remote can become stuck, making it difficult to refuel the vehicle, and in some cases, the dealerships have not been able to provide a solution.

The vehicle's ride has also been criticized by some owners, who have reported that it is too rolly and lacks body control. This can make the vehicle feel unstable when going around corners, which can be a safety concern for some drivers

In summary, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV 2022 has several common problems, including the lack of a battery heater, hood problems, battery issues, fuel pump remote problems, and ride issues. These problems have caused inconvenience and frustration for some owners, and in some cases, have left them stranded or unable to use the vehicle.

Negative 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander phev car reviews

  1. Tyson Koepp 2024-11-26

Pros: The vehicle boasts quality materials and an enormous cargo space, all at a good price point after incentives. However, it's worth noting that the acceleration may feel sluggish and there may not be enough front leg room for taller individuals. Additionally, the battery range is quite limited.

  2. Davion Heller 2024-10-27

I purchased the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Model 2019 from Surrey Mitsubishi in December 2019. Unfortunately, the vehicle has some manufacturing defects that have caused it to malfunction. Despite taking it to the dealership twice, the issue has not been resolved and I am currently unable to use the PHEV feature due to the vehicle not charging. I have expressed my concerns to both the dealership and the manufacturer, but have yet to receive a satisfactory response or solution. I would greatly appreciate any assistance in resolving this issue.

  3. Hardy Ledner 2024-09-08

The vehicle experienced multiple issues, including problems with the BMU, paint, SDA, trim, rear motor mount, battery, and engine, all within the first 10,000 miles.

If you are in the market for a new vehicle, I would recommend considering other options besides the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. While I was initially drawn to this car for its innovative green technology and the promise of high mpg/gallon and a federal tax incentive, I found that the 100% electronic controls made it difficult to adjust to. However, with time and patience, I was able to adapt to the new driving experience. That being said, there are some safety concerns that potential buyers should be aware of. For example, if you forget to unplug the car from the charger and push the reverse button, the car will go into a pause state and you must push the PARK button before exiting the car. Otherwise, the car may reverse without a driver and cause damage. Additionally, I experienced a fuel system malfunction when trying to fill up at a gas station, which required a software upgrade. While these issues were frustrating, I appreciate that the dealership was concerned for my safety and took care of the repairs promptly. Overall, I believe that the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has potential, but it may not be the best fit for everyone at this time.Let me tell you about the gas mileage. The car can get anywhere from 14-100mpg, with 50-100mpg on the freeway during a long road trip. However, the gas tank is small, so you'll need to fill up frequently. This car may not be the best choice for long commutes or road trips. Additionally, the gasoline engine is not very efficient. If you're considering purchasing a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, keep in mind that it may be an overpriced and poorly tested software package. It's important to live close to a dealership, as not many people know how to work on the car.

  5. Demarcus Glover 2024-02-13

The gas mileage is not the best, as it uses 3/4 tank of gas for about 220 miles, including the 22 miles for the charge.

Positive 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander phev car reviews

  1. Damien Durgan 2024-07-22

This car is packed with features, it even has a steering wheel heater! However, I understand your disappointment with the EV range, which is only 13 miles.

  2. Jalon Bayer 2024-07-21

We bought our Outlander PHEV after our 2018 Outlander Sport had its catalytic converter stolen and we were facing a 2-3 month wait for parts. When we went to the dealership, we originally intended to purchase a 3-row Outlander. However, the dealer suggested that we consider a PHEV instead, which would cost the same as an Outlander. Intrigued, we took it for a test drive and were impressed. After asking the dealer to run some numbers, we ended up getting a brand new 2019 PHEV, which had never been driven off the lot, for way less than what a 2020 Outlander would have cost us (after the federal tax rebate). So far, we are still getting used to driving in EV and figuring out the different modes, but we love all of the bells and whistles that come with it. We were even surprised to find that by pushing the charge button when running on gas, we were able to get an extra 8 miles without burning any gas. Overall, we are very happy with our purchase and the great deal we got on it. However, we have noticed that the Lane Departure Warning can be a bit annoying, especially since it turns on when my knee accidentally hits the on/off button. Despite this, we love the other features such as adaptive cruise, headlight dimming, and the sunroof. We did purchase the extended warranty due to all of the bells and whistles, and while we have noticed that the cruise control doesn't work when driving in EV, we are still very satisfied with our purchase.

Great car!!! I just need something bigger

  4. Judah Johns 2024-05-12

There are certainly some quirks and limitations, but considering the value for money, including tax credits and potential state rebates, it's hard to find a better option. Personally, I really like the car, despite its shortcomings. It's a great choice for the price.

  5. Damien Heller 2024-02-22

I've driven 3800 miles in just 4 months and have only had to fill up my gas tank 5 times! With 84% of my driving being EV, I'm averaging an impressive 84 mpg. I even have a 220 Volt 32 Amp charger in my garage, which only takes 3.5 hours for a full charge. When I'm at my largest customer's office, I can charge in just 2 hours using their charging stations. Although my vehicle runs on gas when towing my 1100 lb trailer, it still gets me where I need to go and I can travel the same distance on 11 gallons of gas that I did with my previous car. With gas prices on the rise, I'm thrilled to be saving so much money. While I'm not entirely satisfied with the battery performance of my vehicle, it's still running well and getting great gas mileage. The car engine runs when it's below 50 degrees until it heats up, which burns gas, but I'm still able to get around just fine. Although I can't use the EV button when it's cold out, I'm confident that my SUV will continue to serve me well.
