It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.
As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.
The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

I've now driven 138,000 miles on my daily work commute and I still love my 2018 Outlander PHEV GT! I do have two minor complaints though. Firstly, the acceleration could be better, but I think the new 2.4L engine might improve this. Secondly, the fuel tank is a bit small at only 11 gallons. Other than that, I have no complaints. This Outlander PHEV wasn't originally on my shopping list, but I'm so glad I bought it. I was considering the MDX Hybrid, RX450, and Volvo XC60 Hybrid, but this car is a great deal at only $40K out the door. Plus, I'll get another $6k in tax credits (federal and California), which is fantastic. And did I mention the 10-year warranty? To me, luxury car prices are way overpriced - you're just paying for the logo and the feeling of superiority over others. The only thing I don't love about this car is the driver's seat, which isn't as comfortable as my old RX400H or my wife's BMW230i, but I'm sure I'll get used to it over time. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase after commuting in it for a week.

We bought our Outlander PHEV after our 2018 Outlander Sport had its catalytic converter stolen and we were facing a 2-3 month wait for parts. When we went to the dealership, we originally intended to purchase a 3-row Outlander. However, the dealer suggested that we consider a PHEV instead, which would cost the same as an Outlander. Intrigued, we took it for a test drive and were impressed. After asking the dealer to run some numbers, we ended up getting a brand new 2019 PHEV, which had never been driven off the lot, for way less than what a 2020 Outlander would have cost us (after the federal tax rebate). So far, we are still getting used to driving in EV and figuring out the different modes, but we love all of the bells and whistles that come with it. We were even surprised to find that by pushing the charge button when running on gas, we were able to get an extra 8 miles without burning any gas. Overall, we are very happy with our purchase and the great deal we got on it. However, we have noticed that the Lane Departure Warning can be a bit annoying, especially since it turns on when my knee accidentally hits the on/off button. Despite this, we love the other features such as adaptive cruise, headlight dimming, and the sunroof. We did purchase the extended warranty due to all of the bells and whistles, and while we have noticed that the cruise control doesn't work when driving in EV, we are still very satisfied with our purchase.

I am rating the vehicle 2 stars for the following reasons: Only Mitsubishi dealers can service the vehicle, and there are very limited numbers of dealers in Central and Northern Canada. The gas engine does not properly run at -30° Celsius. The battery and circuits freeze at -20° Celsius and below, which does not allow the vehicle to start properly, if at all (even after being plugged in for one week straight). The catalytic converter already requires a full replacement (although it will be completed at no cost to me under warranty) despite only having 1,750 km of mostly highway driving. The plastic charge port covers are extremely brittle and snapped on the first use, costing $685 for just the part as it only comes in a package, and is not covered under warranty. Fuel economy is generally good, around 7 L/100 km. The technology in the GT model is fantastic, with the only complaint being the lack of wireless charging. The adaptive cruise control is fantastic and cuts out when the system senses loss of traction (in my case, a very deep puddle of water on the passenger side).

I purchased the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Model 2019 from Surrey Mitsubishi in December 2019. Unfortunately, the vehicle has some manufacturing defects that have caused it to malfunction. Despite taking it to the dealership twice, the issue has not been resolved and I am currently unable to use the PHEV feature due to the vehicle not charging. I have expressed my concerns to both the dealership and the manufacturer, but have yet to receive a satisfactory response or solution. I would greatly appreciate any assistance in resolving this issue.

If you are in the market for a new vehicle, I would recommend considering other options besides the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. While I was initially drawn to this car for its innovative green technology and the promise of high mpg/gallon and a federal tax incentive, I found that the 100% electronic controls made it difficult to adjust to. However, with time and patience, I was able to adapt to the new driving experience. That being said, there are some safety concerns that potential buyers should be aware of. For example, if you forget to unplug the car from the charger and push the reverse button, the car will go into a pause state and you must push the PARK button before exiting the car. Otherwise, the car may reverse without a driver and cause damage. Additionally, I experienced a fuel system malfunction when trying to fill up at a gas station, which required a software upgrade. While these issues were frustrating, I appreciate that the dealership was concerned for my safety and took care of the repairs promptly. Overall, I believe that the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has potential, but it may not be the best fit for everyone at this time.Let me tell you about the gas mileage. The car can get anywhere from 14-100mpg, with 50-100mpg on the freeway during a long road trip. However, the gas tank is small, so you'll need to fill up frequently. This car may not be the best choice for long commutes or road trips. Additionally, the gasoline engine is not very efficient. If you're considering purchasing a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, keep in mind that it may be an overpriced and poorly tested software package. It's important to live close to a dealership, as not many people know how to work on the car.
