The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.

The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."

The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.

As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.

The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

    I am rating the vehicle 2 stars for the following reasons: Only Mitsubishi dealers can service the vehicle, and there are very limited numbers of dealers in Central and Northern Canada. The gas engine does not properly run at -30° Celsius. The battery and circuits freeze at -20° Celsius and below, which does not allow the vehicle to start properly, if at all (even after being plugged in for one week straight). The catalytic converter already requires a full replacement (although it will be completed at no cost to me under warranty) despite only having 1,750 km of mostly highway driving. The plastic charge port covers are extremely brittle and snapped on the first use, costing $685 for just the part as it only comes in a package, and is not covered under warranty. Fuel economy is generally good, around 7 L/100 km. The technology in the GT model is fantastic, with the only complaint being the lack of wireless charging. The adaptive cruise control is fantastic and cuts out when the system senses loss of traction (in my case, a very deep puddle of water on the passenger side).

Despite the negative reviews from professionals like Consumer Reports, I decided to purchase the vehicle in June 2020 and I'm so glad I did. If you share similar values to me, I think you'll be thrilled with this car. Let me offer a different perspective on the ride and comfort of the Outlander PHEV. During my test drive, I was impressed by how luxurious the car felt. Even the base SEL model comes with handsome leather upholstery, which is a rarity in other brands. The front seats are incredibly comfortable and offer four dimensions of electric adjustment to ensure the perfect driving position. As someone who is 6'2In electric mode, the power is really pleasing and the ride is eerily silent. When I went over a mountain pass in gas mode this morning, I found that the vehicle delivered plenty of power and wasn't loud or whiny to my ears, despite what Edmunds said. I don't understand their complaints about the steering and braking either. Of course, this car isn't a Lamborghini, but you already know that! So, let's set aside Edmunds' complaints about the engine and handling. If you're a normal person like me, you'll find both satisfactory to pleasing. Finally, I come to the three considerations that ultimately inspired me to buy this vehicle: fuel economy, all-wheel drive, and price. Firstly, fuel economy. Who wouldn't love a full-sized SUV that can go 22 miles on electricity and can get impressive mileage on moderate-length trips? Most of my trips are local, so I don't use the gas engine much. But when I need it, it's there to extend the range to about 300 miles, even with the 'small' 11.3-gallon gas tank. On trips of under 50 miles, you can expect an mpg of 40-110 depending on terrain. It then drops off, depending on how often you can recharge. On the 1,000-mile trip I'm just finishing up, I averaged 28-30 mpg with mostly highway driving and no recharging. In my opinion, that's still acceptable for a large SUV, especially if you, like me, rarely take such trips. Secondly, AWD, baby! I mentioned earlier that I owned four Subarus prior to the Outlander PHEV. There was a reason: I live in a hilly area that can have rough winters, and I love the security and confidence that all-wheel drive provides. I have been frustrated with the lack of choices that those of us who care about fuel economy (and who really want an electric vehicle) have when it comes to AWD SUV-type vehicles. Basically, we have a few hybrid options (e.g., RAV4, CRV) and very few PHEV options (the Outlander, the Ford Escape but it's only FWD, and the RAV4 Prime).Hey there! I was considering waiting for the RAV4 Prime, but then I found out that it might take a while to get one and that they're in high demand, which means they'll be sold at MSRP or higher. That's when I started looking at other options. Price was also a factor, and I found that the 2019 Outlander PHEV retails for around $38,000, which is not much less than the 2021 RAV4 Prime. However, I discovered that the Outlander PHEV can be purchased for way below retail. In fact, I got mine in June 2020 for only $27,500 (it was the last 2019 model available). Plus, with the $6850 federal tax rebate, I'll be paying under $22,000 for my Outlander PHEV. That's a real bargain! Although it doesn't have the same EV range as the Prime and it doesn't qualify for the WA State sales tax break (which requires 30 miles of EV range), it's still a great deal. You'd be hard-pressed to find a conventional sedan at this price point, let alone a PHEV SUV. So, what do you think? Could this be the perfect car for you too?

It's a shame that some people choose to make their cars loud and polluting with large mufflers, instead of investing in making them quieter and more environmentally friendly. If you're looking for a car that's both harmonious and efficient, I highly recommend the new 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. I see that the new ones are almost $50K, but I still think it's worth every penny.Battery still good and auto runs great. I just love to drive it.     I compared all the Hybrid & electric SUVs available in 2018 models and found the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV GT to be the best choice financially and in terms of performance. After careful consideration of all the factors, including price, performance, interior & exterior looks and amenities, and car reviews, buying this SUV was a no brainer. I have owned this vehicle for 8 months and I haven’t regretted my decision. I’m so pleased with it and I get a lot of compliments from strangers on it. I live in Hawaii where Toyota & Honda dominate the market, but I love all the perks that come with owning this car, such as free EV parking, driving solely in electric mode, tax rebates, etc. I bought the ruby black pearl color and it shimmers in the sunshine. All my family and friends love the exterior, interior, and driving performance as much as I do. I’ve owned BMWs, Toyotas, Fords, Saturns, and Hondas in the past and I must say, this vehicle comes in 1st place for me. The only downside is I wish it had better electric driving range, but given everything else it does have, I still love it.     This car is an incredible fuel-efficient SUV, but it's important to note that it's not a full electric vehicle. Before purchasing, it's essential to do your research to understand what you're getting. If you have a daily round trip work commute of less than 30 miles, this vehicle is mind-blowing. You'll hardly use any gasoline from Monday to Friday, and you can go 2-3 weeks on just $20 of gas before refueling. At times when you go beyond the EV charge, you still get decent fuel economy for a 3000+ lb vehicle. The gas engine is quiet and has sufficient power, and you'll hardly notice when it comes on. The best thing about this car is the flexibility it offers when driving. You can charge the battery with a push of a button, and on longer trips, my strategy is to use EV mode to get to the interstate, then switch to charge mode on highway miles. This is one of the quietest vehicles I've ever been in, and the handling of the PHEV is very good, more like a large car. The interior is very comfortable with plenty of room, and we did a 6-hour ski trip this winter with 4 people in the car, skis on top, and cargo area fully loaded, with no complaints. I highly recommend getting a class 2 charger, which can fully charge the battery in about 2 hours when it's fully depleted. The charger that comes with it is very slow, taking about 12 hours. You'll need a 240v line for the class 2, but it's not a big deal. I have a 6 kW solar array on my home, so I'm getting free charging from the sun a lot of the time. My only complaint about the car is the limited EV range. If it got 30-50 miles on a full charge, that would be way better. However, after you have one, you realize that most of your daily driving is short trips. Overall, this is a fantastic car that I highly recommend.I highly recommend this vehicle if you have realistic expectations of what it can and can't do. If you want a full EV SUV, you may want to consider buying a Rivian next year, although it will cost you about $40K more than the PHEV.
