The Subaru WRX is an all-wheel drive sport compact car manufactured by the Japanese automaker Subaru, originally based on the Impreza created for the World Rally Championship in 1992. Subaru claimed the name WRX stands for "World Rally eXperimental". Starting with the 2015 models, the WRX lineup has been split from the Impreza, with a different body style that is not offered as an optional hatchback/wagon, being introduced as the separate Levorg model.

Impreza-based models (1992–2014)

The first three generations of the WRX, sold until the 2015 model year, were based on standard Impreza platforms, and replaced the Subaru RX hatchback and sedan.

The initial first-generation WRX models were based on the Impreza sedan (GC chassis code). They were followed by wagons (GF) in 1993 and the first upgraded WRX STi version, introduced in 1994. Several limited edition first-generation coupés were offered in the late 1990s and early 2000s which were never sold in the US and are highly sought after by Subaru enthusiasts.

The second-generation WRX (GD/GG chassis codes for the sedan/wagon, respectively) was brought over to the United States domestic market for model year 2002, with the STI being brought over for model year 2004. The initial "bugeye" front end styling (2000) was superseded by the "blobeye" in 2004 and the "hawkeye" in 2006. Under an agreement between Fuji Heavy Industries and General Motors, Saab sold its own version of the WRX, marketed as the Saab 9-2X, for the 2005 and 2006 model years. The 9-2X was available in both a standard (Linear) and performance (Aero) package, the latter was essentially identical to the second-generation WRX wagon, mechanically.

The third-generation WRX were sold as chassis codes GE (sedan) and GH (hatchback, replacing the earlier wagon version) initially; the third-generation WRX STI was sold with a widened chassis and was available only as a widebody hatch (GR). For the 2011 model year, the third-generation WRX sedan and hatch were moved to the GV and GR wide-body chassis variants, respectively, and a widebody sedan version of the STI (GV) was marketed. The Impreza was redesigned and the fourth-generation was first marketed for model year 2012, making it a distinct model from the WRX, which continued on the third-generation GV/GR chassis until 2014 in most markets.

The fourth-generation WRX were given the VA chassis designation and marketed as a separate model from the Impreza starting in 2015.

Common 2016 Subaru Wrx problems

The 2016 Subaru WRX has been praised for its performance and handling, but like any car, it has its share of common problems reported by owners. One of the most common issues is related to the clutch.

Another problem reported by some owners is related to the engine. The WRX has experienced some internal engine issues, which can be quite serious and costly to repair.

The 2016 WRX also has some issues with the transmission. Some owners have reported problems with the synchronizers, which can cause difficulty shifting gears and grinding noises. This issue can be quite serious and may require a complete transmission rebuild or replacement, which can be quite expensive.

In addition to these mechanical issues, some owners have reported problems with the electrical system. These issues can include malfunctioning sensors, such as the oxygen sensor and mass air flow sensor, which can cause the engine to run poorly or not at all. Other electrical issues include problems with the battery and alternator, which can cause the car to have difficulty starting or running at all.

While these issues can be quite serious and costly to repair, it's important to note that the 2016 Subaru WRX is generally considered to be a reliable car. Consumer Reports gives the WRX an above-average reliability rating, based on extensive survey data and expert technical knowledge. However, like any car, it's important to keep up with regular maintenance and address any issues as soon as they arise to avoid more serious problems down the road.

  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: JF1VA2M6XG9
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The Seconary Air Injection pump stayed on for days. Burnt a hole in the side, relay possibly damaged, and now setting off other components and computers.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-01
  • VIN: JF1VA1N61G8

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-27
  • VIN: JF1VA1E69G9
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: While driving, the clutch became stiff and unusable. Ultimately the car could not be shifted resulting in using a lower gear than normal to limp the car to safety. The car had to be towed to a mechanic. During the repair the mechanic identified that the cause of the failure was the clutch fork pivot ball punched through the stamped steel clutch fork. Looking online this seems to be a common failure since aftermarket re-designed parts are offered. I feel this is a manufacturer defect which resulted in the clutch failure and a 2500.00 repair. This car is only 7 years old with 67K miles on it. The clutch fork should not have failed catastrophically at this point in the car's life.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-14
  • VIN: JF1VA1E61G8
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I PURCHASED A 2016 SUBARU WRX (PREMIUM) USED FROM A SUBARU DEALER IN ALBANY, NY WITH UNDER 26K MILES FOR APPROXIMATELY $25K IN 2018. ON A DRIVE IN DECEMBER 2022 I EXPERIENCED HESITATION AND/OR STUTTERING UNDER LOAD OR WHEN ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE, AND CAR BEGAN GETTING VERY HOT, AND CLOSE TO OVERHEATING, AND THE ENGINE WAS KNOCKING LOUDLY. AFTER TURNING ENGINE OFF AND THEN RESTARTING, THE KNOCKING (INTENSITY) WAS NOT AS NOTICEABLE AS THE INITIAL INCIDENT. INITIALLY I REPLACED ALL COIL OVER PLUGS, AS CYLINDER #4 INITIALLY WAS REPORTING A MISFIRE CODE AFTER THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THIS APPEARED TO RELIEVE THE MISFIRE BRIEFLY, BUT THE ISSUE IMMEDIATELY RETURNED, THIS TIME WITH PISTON #3 REPORTING MISFIRES AND ALSO EXHIBITING SIGNS OF A POSSIBLE FAILED RINGLAND, WITH OIL SEEPING PAST RINGS (ON TO / IN SPARK PLUG) CAUSING THE ENGINE TO RUN VERY POORLY. PRESENTLY UPON STARTUP WHITE SMOKE COMES FROM EXHAUST OUT THE TAILPIPE AND THE ENGINE IS HESITATING AND/OR MISSING, RUNNING POORLY AND I FEEL IT CANNOT BE DRIVEN SAFELY WITH THE DIMINISHED PERMORMANCE OR COMPLETE LACK OF ABILITY TO ACCELERATE NORMALLY LIKE A MOTOR VEHICLE SHOULD. I HAVE ENGAGED A MECHANIC TO INSPECT THE ENGINE, BUT HAVE NOT YET PROCEEDED WITH INSPECTION/REPAIRS DUE TO THE CLASS ACTION LITIGATION. CURRENT MILEAGE IS: 73563. THIS CAR HAS AN FA20 ENGINE.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-10-01
  • VIN: JF1VA1E60G9
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Started having issue with the engine making loud rattle noises and oil pressure was not consistent. Upon further investigating I removed the oil pan and removed the oil pickup. The oil pickup screen was full of RTV sealant causing the oil pickup to struggle with maintaining proper oil pressure and flow to the engine. I ended up having to change my timing belt tensioners because one went bad. Probably because of low oil pressure or RTV was sucked into oil galleys and caused it to malfunction. My car sounds a little better now but I believe I also have a light amount of rod knocking. If I kept driving the car, This could have led to catastrophic engine damage and caused my car to stall while traveling on public roads. I later researched if others have seen this issue and it appear to be a common issue in with Subaru and Toyota vehicles using the FA20DIT engine. These engine already have small enough rods, they don't need to be robbed of oil and cause engine damage because the manufacturer applied too much RTV sealant in assembly. There needs to be a recall on this.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-15
  • VIN: JF1VA2M68G9
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: My power steering one day lost all fluid out of no where. I have this awful sound and go buy new power steering fluid. It’s continuing to leak. I joined a Subaru Wrx/STi group on Facebook and found that this is a reoccurring problem for many Subaru sti owners around the year I have. It sounds faulty and defective and sucks that the customer is stuck paying for these issues instead of Subaru fixing their reoccurring issue with many customers. I baby my car to the highest extent and the power steering should not have just gone out after I parked in my drive way. There is a massive stain now due to the leakage, which is fine. But it’s inconvenient knowing I’ll have to fork up hundreds to over a thousand to get this properly fixed instead of a DIY where it has to do with such an important compartment of the car.

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-02-07

I checked for recalls on Subaru WRXs and noticed a recall was issued for the same problems on 2011-2015 models. My vehicle is a 2016 model and demonstrates all the same failures observed from the recall of the 2011-2015 models.

  • VIN: JF1VA1G61G9
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: While driving in below zero temperatures I received a warning "Headlights Disabled" and my headlights were inoperable. I was able to use the high beams otherwise, complete darkness causing an immanent safety concern and potential for financial loss in terms of legality and ticketing. The failure remained in effect for approximately 10 minutes and then the warning disappeared and the light regained full operation. Upon googling, this is a common issue with other owners. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT BEING OPERATED IN ITS OPTIONAL "PADDLE SHIFTER" MODE--IT WAS IN THE STANDARD AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SETTING. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY BEING ASSESSED AT A DEALERSHIP, ALTHOUGH PRELIMINARY DIAGNOSIS FROM A DEALERSHIP REPRESENTATIVE INDICATES THERE IS "NOTHING WRONG." HOWEVER, A SIMPLE GOOGLE SEARCH OF "2015+ SUBARU WRX CVT STALLING" YIELDS A NUMBER OF OTHER VEHICLES THAT HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME ISSUE--THE VEHICLE STALLING WHILE AT LOW SPEEDS. SOME OF THE OTHER OWNERS HAVE INDICATED THEY HAVE PAID FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF OIL CONTROL VALVES FROM THEIR OWN POCKET TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE. SINCE THE VEHICLE IS PRONE TO STALLING, THIS CREATES A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUE FOR WRX OPERATES AS WELL AS OTHER MOTORISTS.

Negative 2016 Subaru Wrx car reviews

  1. Allen Hegmann 2024-06-23

If you enjoy working on your own car, I would highly recommend the 'rex. If you love churning through gears on backroads and don't mind a little turbo lag, again, I would highly recommend the 'rex. However, if you are looking for a stylish daily driver, this may not be the car for you. Although the performance is impressive, the interior design is lackluster and at times gaudy, which detracts from the daily driving experience. Additionally, the infotainment system is not up to par, even on the limited trim model with an 'upgraded' system. The sound system is also abysmal for a vehicle of this price range. Despite these drawbacks, the 'rex performs comparably to an i4 BMW 3 series, while having a much lower MSRP. The ride is stiffer and the cabin is louder, but cornering is a breeze and there's plenty of power here.

  2. Justen VonRueden 2024-01-22

I absolutely love the look of the car! It's such a nice change from my older cars. Although the clutch is a bit stiff, I'm sure it will get better with time. My boyfriend gifted me/us the 2016 Subaru WRX just a couple of weeks ago and we've been driving it every day without any issues. Unfortunately, it didn't start the day before Thanksgiving and it looks like it might need a new alternator. I'm a bit disappointed and frustrated, as I've never had this issue with my old cars. I'll keep you updated in case it turns out to be a different issue.

  3. Triston Rogahn 2024-01-10

I recently traded in my STI for an M2 due to the turbo lag issue. While the STI is powerful for a 4-cylinder, it feels similar to driving a Honda Civic Si with high RPMs. It's disappointing that the Japanese market gets the more powerful S207 version. However, I am not a fan of Japanese products, including cars, as they tend to keep their best products for their domestic market. The M2's dashboard design is not my favorite, but at least there is no more turbo lag.

Positive 2016 Subaru Wrx car reviews

  1. Eli Torphy 2025-04-01

I recently purchased a car after being urban and car-free for 2 years. I had previously owned SAAB turbos and was looking for something fun with a stick shift, which is becoming harder and harder to find in the US. I had always wanted a WRX and was hoping to find a clean STI second-hand, but it turned out to be harder to find than I thought. I ended up buying a new one since the Premium model was within my budget (although I should have ordered the Limited for the lights alone). The best thing about it is that nothing else offers all-wheel drive and this much fun for the price. There are also tons of aftermarket goodies available for tuning. Additionally, it has good fuel economy for a car with nearly 300 horsepower and little turbo lag. It's a beast in the snow when I put snow tires on it. The interior quality is far better than the FisherPrice plastics that Subarus have been known for. However, there are some downsides. The interior is still cheap with a lot of rattles, and the stock ECU tune is not great, falling flat on its face at 4,300 rpm. A COBB tune is a must (or a pro-tune). The headlights on the Premium and base models have poor output, and the interior ergonomics are not great, with a one-touch window for the driver only (in 2016!!!) and no light sensor to adjust dashboard brightness (in 2016!!!!). There is also a lot of engine movement which leads to a sloppy shifter feel. Overall, it's a good car for the money, but you will need to spend a lot of time and money on aftermarket bits to remove/resolve some of the penny-pinching that Subaru did.

I'm really enjoying this car! It's a huge improvement from my 2009 WRX in terms of the interior, engine, and suspension. The suspension is stiff and the car turns flat with no roll, making it feel like a true sports car. While there is some room for improvement in terms of tire and wind noise, the interior is a major upgrade from the old WRX models. The materials and design are much better, and even the sound system, though not the best, is a significant improvement from my previous car (which had a terrible sound system). I opted for the short shifter and it's a vast improvement from the long throws of the old 5-speed WRX models. The engine delivers great torque starting from 2300 RPMs, and on the highway in 6th gear, you don't even need to downshift to get the car going. It's clear that the new engine is still in the research and development stage, as one reviewer noted. When you press the gas pedal halfway (or even less) from 2300 RPMs, you feel a nice surge of power that decreases around 4300 RPMs. It feels very fast and responsive without having to use the whole tachometer. However, if you press the gas pedal all the way down, the power delivery isn't as linear. You can feel the turbo easing up and spooling up a few times before reaching redline, but it's all part of the car's personality. The car feels solid and has great grip, giving you a secure feeling while driving. I wasn't a fan of my old WRX, which got flooded 5 years ago and cost me 7k, but after reading reviews of the 2015 model year, I decided to give it a shot. After test driving it and putting 2k miles on it, I find myself wanting to drive it to work and back home again. It's not perfect, but I've learned to appreciate just how good it is!

I've owned this car for a few weeks now and I must say, there are some great things about it. Firstly, the engine is amazing! It provides plenty of power down low in the rev band, making it very easy to get the car up to speed. Additionally, there is plenty of torque, so passing someone on the highway in 6th gear is a breeze once the boost kicks in. The 0-60 times are very close to the STi because you can get to 60 mph in 2nd gear. If you're into modifying your car, the FA20DIT engine takes mods very well. If you look online, you can see people with Stage 2 WRX's making very similar power to Stage 2 STi's. ETS has over a 400 whp WRX with a stock block, fuel pump, and injectors (try that with the EJ257). Another great feature is the AWD system, which is amazing for all four seasons. You get the excellent traction you would expect out of a Subaru during the winter months, but also get excellent traction on dry pavement as well. Once you know how to launch an AWD car properly, this thing takes off like a rocket ship with barely any wheel spin like a FWD/RWD car would have. The MPG is very good if you stay out of the turbo; you can easily get 30mpg+ just cruising on the highway. Subaru has definitely stepped up their game in terms of interior material quality. The interior has many more soft touch points than in previous iterations of the WRX. The Premium model comes with nice features such as fog lights, cold weather package (heated seats, side mirrors and windshield wiper de-icer), and sunroof. However, there are some cons to consider. I am not a huge fan of the stock 6-speed transmission. I didn't get the STi short throw shifter, so I can't speak on that, but the stock shifter has pretty long throws and it's very notchy. I've also sometimes had difficulty going from 2nd to 3rd gear when driving the car quickly. I've grinded the gear before as well as sometimes accidentally gone into 5th gear. Subaru has never been known for having great transmissions, but I wish they made this one a bit better.Another con of the car is the stock sound system, which is not very good. The speakers are quiet and lack bass. However, this is not a huge issue and can be easily upgraded. Additionally, the stock center armrest could be a bit higher, but there are options available to extend it. Overall, the car is a perfect daily driver for someone who enjoys a bit of fun during their commute. It is quick, practical, safe, and reliable, making it tough to beat. Whether you choose to leave it stock or modify it, you are sure to have a great time driving it. I personally look forward to going to work each day because I get to drive this car!

I noticed that you mentioned owning or leasing a 2017 WRX. I just wanted to say that I completely agree with you about the performance of this car. Despite some reviews that suggest otherwise, I have found that it doesn't ride harshly at all. The steering is awesome and the car is as tight as a drum. If you're considering getting one, I think you'll love it!

The base audio may not be the most exciting, but with a few upgrades, it can really come to life. I would recommend skipping the HK-Nav package and instead upgrading the tweeters, speakers, and adding a subwoofer. By doing so, you can get a sound system that rivals those of much more expensive cars, all at a fraction of the cost.
