2011 Ford Explorer problems
The Ford Explorer is a range of SUVs manufactured by Ford Motor Company since the 1991 model year. As the first four-door SUV produced by Ford, the Explorer was introduced as a replacement for the two-door Bronco II. Within the current Ford SUV range in North America, the Explorer is slotted between the Ford Edge and Ford Expedition. As with the Ford Ranger, the Explorer derives its name from a trim package previously offered on the Ford F-Series pickup trucks.
The Explorer has been offered in multiple chassis and powertrain layouts. The first two generations were directly derived from the Ford Ranger, switching to a model-specific chassis for the third and fourth generations. The fifth generation was repackaged as a crossover SUV, adopting a variant of the Ford Taurus chassis architecture.
Alongside the five-door Explorer wagon, a three-door Explorer wagon was offered from 1991 to 2003, officially referred to as the Explorer Sport after 1999, serving as the direct replacement of the Bronco II; the 2001–2010 Ford Explorer Sport Trac was a crew-cab pickup derived from the model line. For police use, the Ford Police Interceptor Utility has been derived from the fifth and sixth-generation Explorer to replace the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor (and the later Taurus-based Police Interceptor Sedan). Through rebranding, Mazda, Mercury, and Lincoln have sold versions of the Explorer; Lincoln currently markets the sixth-generation model line as the Lincoln Aviator.
For the North American market, the first four generations of the Explorer were produced by Ford at its Louisville Assembly Plant (Louisville, Kentucky) and at its now-closed St. Louis Assembly Plant (Hazelwood, Missouri); the model line is currently produced at Chicago Assembly Plant (Chicago, Illinois).
In 2020, CNBC reported the Ford Explorer range as the best-selling SUV of all time in America.

- VIN: 1FMHK7F84BG
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: The rack and pinion has gone out on my 2011 ford explorer limited. It is available for inspection. My safety was at risk, it went out when I pulled out of a gas station after getting gas causing me to almost crash into another car. Dealerships claim to not be able to replicate the issue even though other 2011 models have a recall for this specific issue. We have attempted multiple times to have it repaired at multiple Ford dealerships. Before it completely went out, the steering would stick for a second sometimes then continue working like normal. After it completely went out a warning light appeared on the dash that states “Power Steering Assist Fault” and now the car will not steer with power steering.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-22
- VIN: 1FMHK8D84BG
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Pursuant to the attached pdf file this relates to component parts of the air bag system. When these connections fail or have an issue it disables all of the safety features in the vehicle related to the air bag system and will prevent airbag deployment or any operation in a crash. This has been an issue since we purchased the car used with around 35,000 miles on it. Multiple repair attempts have failed. At 61,000 mile I was told that they would have to replace the connections but since it was more than 60,000 miles the cost of that repair would be out of my pocket as they would no longer honor any warranty coverage. Ford customer service in Dearborn agreed with that assessment. The cost estimate at that time was given at a minimum of $3000.00 dollars. This issue remains unresolved to this day and time as I have tried to appeal that decision and while I have tried to find an independent repair shop that would do this work. To date no independent shop will do this as it effects a safety system. At a 100,000+ miles now I am transporting my grandchildren in this car without the benefit of an operating airbag system due to Ford's continued failures.

- Summary: I have a recall 24V031 letter dated February 2024. I called and got an appointment for 7 Aug, showed up at the dealership, just to get turnaround and was told that they don’t have the glue to fix the recall. No phone calls or text received to let me know that my appointment was canceled due to this problem. I was told that they will call me back, once glue is received. It’s now 2 Oct, still no calls, so I called them back. I was told that this is still an issue and that they’re still waiting for the glue to come in. They have added my name to a “Wait list”, and we’ll be notified once they’re ready to fix the recall issue. I don’t understand how long are we supposed to wait for this? Is there something I can do to fix this problem? Please advise. Thank you.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-01
- VIN: 1FMHK7D83BG
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: The steering assist warning light came on and I was going 20 miles an hour as I had just pulled out of my driveway. Prior to this no warning labels about steering had happened. Tire sensor fault had been on but all my warning lights have been on since I recently bought the car from a family member. Two months prior to this happening intermittently I would have difficulty with steering working as I was pulling off when I first started the vehicle. But then a month ago it went out completely and was able to finally get it back home. My boyfriend then drove it carefully, as it was super hard to steer, to the nearest Ford dealership. They said that the repair would be $2900 paying out of pocket because Ford would not approve repair under recall 15N01 because the 10 year 150,000 mile stipulation. we spoke to a Ford rep a week ago and my car has 167,000 miles on it but Ford rep at customer care said my vin is pulling up as having this recall but the stipulation of the 10 year or 150,000 mile is keeping them from approving it. I printed out the form from related documents on NHTSA website that states to Ford dealerships that if recall shows up and certain codes are visible then that stipulation of 150,000 mile or ten year extended stipulation doesn't matter. That regardless of that stipulation it is to be replaced or fixed under that recall. So in oasis program dealership sees where my vin is under this recall but due to that stipulation Ford won't fix it. Ford Rep called dealership to have them read that notice I printed about it being fixed and covered under the 14S06 supplement #3. AND MY CAR WAS MANUFACTURED IN CHICAGO IL DATE OF MANUFACTURE WAS MAY 27 2011!! SO IT IS FOR SURE SUPPOSED TO BE FIXED UNDER THAT 14S06 SUPPLEMENT#3! PLEASE GUIDE ME ON WHAT I NEED TO DO. DEALERSHIP STILL HAS CAR IN HOPES THEY CAN GET APPROVED SOMEHOW.

- Summary: For about 1 month when I turned ignition on to pull off my steering would lock then once I started off it would be fine. I was driving from work and the steering completely locked up. And now the steering has completely went out. I am aware of the recall. And when Ford pulls up my vin it is part of the recall however, they won't approve it to be fixed under the recall 14S06 OR 15N01 because they say it's not covered because of the 150,000 mile 10 year extended coverage! I also am very aware of the SUPPLEMENT #3 WHERE FORD SENT ALL FORD DEALERSHIPS A NOTIFICATION STATING THAT THEY ARE TO FIX THE VEHICLE UNDER THOSE RECALLS REGARDLESS OF THE 150,000 MILE 10 YEAR COVERAGE! I have the letter printed out and took to Ford dealership where my car currently is and has been for a month fighting with Ford to fix it under those recalls SUPPLEMENT #3!! AND dealership tried telling ford rep that he had letter in front of him that is the supplement 3 but Ford rep acting like he didn't know what we were talking about! How do I get this fixed. It's a huge safety issue and I cannot drive it under these circumstances. Well it's not drivable at all!
